"Food is not just eating energy. It's an experience." - Guy Fieri

Want an easy snack that’s quick, healthy, and simple? I’ve got one foryou. One day I was craving cheese (Itend to do this I lot; I’m a cheesefanatic) and didn’t know what to eat.Our family is on a diet to help withcertain allergies, and we weren’tallowed bread, so a grilled cheese wasnot an option. My solution? A brie-and-apple mix! Absolutely amazing,my mom and sister love it (Dad doesn’tcount, he doesn’t like cheese)! So hereis the recipe:

Ingredients:Serves 3• One apple for each person (in my

case, 3)• 3 wedges of brie• Butter/coconut oil/olive oil for pan

1. Dice brie into little cubes. It’s okay ifthey stick to each other. Just to spreadthe cheese around.

2. Cut apples into bite-sized cubes/wedges.

3. Heat up pan.

4. When pan is hot, put on 1 teaspoonof butter/oil.

*NOTE: Watch the pan, thebutter/oil can spit, and, if ittouches your skin, canhurt. **NOTE: I use a cast-iron pan… they have nobad chemicals in thecoating, but make sure youwash and dry it right awayafter you use it, or else itwill rust. ***NOTE: I useHoney Crisp apples. Theytaste just like their name!

“If you want the answer—ask thequestion.” ― Lorii Myers

Dear Madam,

Your article on Scout was so funny andfactual. I like that. Since I have readyou magazine, I have showed it tofamily, friends, and my fish. After myparents and grandparents read it, theyare considering getting a dog. So, I amwriting to ask you this question: Whattype of dog should they get?

My family is quite large, the oldestbeing 37 and NOT married (yeah, Iknow, weird right?) and the youngestbeing 4. We would prefer a quiet dog,but friendly to people, (and preferablywith a curly tail).Would a Yorkie or Chihuahua work?

Yours truly, Anima Seeson

Miss Seeson,Your family sounds a lot like minewhen we wanted a dog!Make sure you look into the dog breedbefore you decide to get it. Cute andfluffy does not necessarily meanfriendly. We didn't think our dog would have acurly tail, but it ended up having oneanyways! I HIGHLY recommend theMini Golden Doodle. Great family dogand doesn't shed.Little dogs need a lot of exercise. Get amellow dog unless you want all of thatexercise. We love getting letters from people likeyou, thank you!

Sincerly,Esther Lawe

Golden Doodles

“A dog is the only thing on earththat loves you more than he loveshimself.” —Josh Billings

A yelping and yowling came from thelittle room. You can hear claws clickingon the floor and hisses. “It’s fine…”Papa shouts over the racket. Ava’s notso sure.Let’s go back seven years to the NineMile Falls in the United States ofAmerica, as Ava Goeden and herfamily go to get their puppy. “I hadbeen begging for a dog for a LONGtime!” Ava had told me, “We werelooking at pictures of dogs that weregetting sold one day, knowing wewould probably never get them. But itwas love at first sight and we camehome with an 8-week-old English-Cream Golden Retriever that wenamed Scout. It was a dream cometrue!!!”

Five years after the Goedens got Scout,Ava asked for a cat. The Goedens gotone from the SPCA and named itStormy. “Papa said that Scout andStormy would get used to each other ifthey got put in the same room with noone around. But all Scout knew aboutcats was that you could chase them. There was a ton of racket, but Papasaid it was fine. Now Scout and Stormytolerate each other but are by nomeans friends. I’m disappointedbecause I tried to tell Papa that planwouldn’t work, but he didn’t listen tome. I could have created a really cuterelationship with them…”

Q & A with Ava:

Q: How do you like livingwith Scout?A: Hairy, fun, cute, andsnuggly. When I cry, hecomes to comfort me; it’slike he knows I need helpand comfort.

Q: Would you recommendan English-Cream GoldenRetriever?A: YES! Scout is so friendlyand playful, and soloveable as well!

Q: How are Scout and Stormy togethernow?A: Stormy was TRAUMATIZED byScout but he is healing and wants toplay with Scout. Because of the sizedifference between them they do notknow what to do about each other.Stormy is to small for Scout to wrestlewith and Scout is too big for Stormy towrestle with. Scout shows no interestin Stormy unless he smells funny butStormy sometimes gets frisky and triesto play with Scout. Stormy then usuallyremembers how much bigger Scout isand gets scared. I am still so mad atmy dad for not introducing them in thecorrect way. It would have been so cuteseeing the two snuggling together, butthat dream was ruined. Now we musttrain the two to snuggle by forceinstead of them cuddling each other bythemselves, which I have no time onmy hands to do and would not be verynice for them.

Q: Would you recommend puppies, orgrownups…?A: Puppies. Puppies are so cute, andyou can train to act in the ways thatyou want.

Dear Ms. Payne,

One of the most unusual and rarestdog breeds is the NorwegianLundehund. They were originally bredand used for puffin hunting, becausethey are very flexible and have a widerange of motion in their joints. Theyalso have 6 toes on each foot. All thesethings help the Lundehund to climb upcliffs and retrieve the nesting puffins. Now there are only about 4400Lundehunds left, as puffin hunting isillegal in most places.

Yours truly,

Esther Lawe

II pelted like a bullet out of thebarn. And for good reason.

“YOU FILTHY DOG!!!” My masteremerged, his face red. “GET OUT, IFYOU KNOW WHAT’S GOOD FORYOU!!!”I ran through the curves in the road. Mypaws skidded on the red dust of thecountry. I went straight for the nearest“big” town. There was no way I was goingback there again.

"I ate my 9 year old's art project. Ithad marshmellows on it. I couldn'tresist." - A Hungry Dog

Hi, I’m the Dog with No Name. Youmay be wondering why my master is soangry, and rightly you should. I wastrying to find a few mice in the barn, asI hadn’t eaten for days on end (youknow a dog is hungry when he huntsfor food by descending to the level ofthe cat.). The family I live with is verypoor. Anyway, I accidently knocked ajug from the table. It was already wornand cracked, and no one uses it foreverything, but my master gets mad atme all the time, even for the littlestthings. That was the last straw. The town got closer and closer. Finally,my energy all spent, I slowed to a trot, then giving in to a grudging walk.

I wanted to get away from those peopleas fast as I could. Maybe a morewelcoming family would take me in attown!A loaf of bread!!!I quickly saunter to snatch a fresh, warm loaf off a windowsill where it iscooling. I grab it in my teeth and settledown on my bed of trash, warm withrotting compost. I devour half thebread when I hear a sound. Patter,patter.Uh-oh.

I guard my loaf. 5 dogs come aroundthe corner, apparently smelling thefreshly-baked goodness I had betweenmy dirty forepaws. I growl and bearmy teeth. They pay no attention. Iwatch as they come closer.

Suddenly they lunge at me.Such a flurry of paws, legs, and teeth you will havenever seen. I stood nochance. Severely scratchedand bleeding from severalwounds, I limped away, without my meal. I heardthe growling behind me asI drudged away as theother dogs fought over thefood.

5 days later and I wasn’t any better. Mywounds hadn’t healed, I supposebecause of the garbage heap I slept on,and my leg was still in a lot of pain. Iwandered around the city, looking fora kind human or some food.As I rounded a bed, a veterinarian wasout to bring his sign in. He saw me andshouted into the shop. “Ida! Comehere!”A grumpy voice answered from within.“What now Hubert?!”“A poor little hurt dog!” He picked meup gently and carried me into the shop.He placed me on a cushion andpricked a needle in my back.“You’re in a pretty bad state little fella.Let’s see what I can do.”

“I took my dog to the groomer...I'm not sure I got the right dogback." - An owner

I woke up in a cage. I saw otheranimals around me. There were cats, birds, mice, rats, and oh horror! Otherdogs! I started to claw at my cage. Onlythen did I realize I had a large, white, heavy thing wrapped around my leg. Itried to chew it off, but it was too hard.I started to whimper. A man camearound the corner and saw me. “Heylittle guy!” He whispered and came myway. It wasn’t the vet. He unlocked mycage and wrapped me in his arms. Hetook me to the front desk and put meon a poofy seat. Just then I realizedwhere I was. The Adoption Centre.

Just then the little bell on the doorrang. A woman and little girl.“Look at that cute little puppy!!!” Thelittle girl is screaming from across theaisle of the pet shop.Cute?!“Oh mommy, can I pet him?!” The girlis still yelling.“May I pet him.” Her mother iscorrecting her. “Yes, go ahead. Thestorekeeper says he is friendly.”She’s coming towards me. Why?Should I run?! I am starting to panic. She’s getting closer. I cower in mycage.“It’s okay…”Closer…A hand?! I see a plump, small, whitehand reached out towards me, almostimploringly.

What I am supposed to do?I sniff cautiously. Shesmiles. “Good puppy.”She starts to pet me on thehead. It feels good. Shescratches behind my ears. Ilike this human!I nuzzle in. If this is takingrisks, like mama said, I likerisks! I wag my tail. Shelaughs. “Mommy! Look! He’s smiling at me!!!”Her mother comes over.“Aww!”
