Rock climbing is a fun way to get exercise and stay in shape. Perhaps the best way for a beginner to start out is at an indoor climbing gym, which offers a safe and controlled environment that is perfect for practice and can be accessed year-round. Most gyms also allow climbers to rent the necessary basic equipment and provide additional necessities such as rope.

Basic EquipmentThe first thing climbers need is a harness.
When picking out a harness, ensure that the waist belt fits securely over the hips and there are loops for both legs. Climbers should also wear climbing shoes that fit comfortably and provide the friction needed to grip footholds. Finally, a belay device is necessary in order to control the rope and secure the climber.
