Basic Facts about the Great Depression

Basic Facts about the Great Depression How it all StartedThe Day the stock market crashed and the Great Depression officially started was called Black Tuesday. It was October 29, 1929. Many people tried to rapidly sell their stocks, but nobody was buying them. This lead to the path of bankruptcy for many Americans.

How it affected jobsIn the great depression, many people lost their jobs because many of the companies they worked for went bankrupt. BY 1932 the unemployment rate had soared past 20%. Many people would go looking for jobs, only to not find one and come home and find that their house had been evicted. Millions were homeless, and searched the trash for food.

How if affected FamiliesThe great depression affect families in many ways. Many women tried to find jobs to earn money, even though women working was not common. Many fathers left the family to find work, so children were taken out of school to help with siblings and to help lower the costs of even going to school. Some teenagers left their homes to find work as well.

Soup KitchensSoup Kitchens were created to feed those who had no food for free. This food was paid for by the government.

The End of the Great DepressionWith Franklin Roosevelt president at the time, Pearl Harbor was bombed, bringing the US into World War 2. This war effort effectively ended the great depression, and the US could breath a sigh of relief.
