Activity Ideas:

Activity Ideas:

Personal Info match: Copy the fields and answers on two colors of paper and make enough sets for students to complete in pairs. Review all of the fields as a class prior to passing out the matching exercise. Fast finishers can write in their notebooks.

Vote with your feet: Teacher posts Yes/No signs on two sides of the room. Ask “Are” questions (Are you from Somalia? Are you living in the USA?” Students vote by going to one side or the other.

City/Country/State: Ss get three different colored pieces of paper. Ss write the three words on each different paper. T says place, they vote by holding up a sign what it’s classified as.

Activity Ideas:

US Map: Look at the map together on the ELMO. Label some key US places (New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Minnesota, California, Florida, Texas, etc). Pass out the maps to the students and colored pencils. Give them commands to color states different colors (Minnesota, California, New York, Florida, Illinois, and like 3-4 more). Label the four directions

Bad Sentences: Project the sentences on the ELMO. As a class, work though the sentences one at a time, correcting errors.

CASAS Listening: Have students number 1 to 7 in their notebooks (do not pass out the sheet; it is just a script for the teacher). Read one questions aloud at a time with the four answers. Students should write A, B, C or D in their notebooks. Repeat questions as needed. This activity is designed to prepare students for the CASAS listening test. Correct together as a class.

Story cloze: Model filling in the missing words prior to passing out the worksheet. High level students should try to do it from memory; low-level can copy from their story.

I live in the USA now. Students write a similar piece filling in information for themselves. Fast finishers can write more about what they like/don’t like similar to Abdi’s Story.
