Please read this manual carefullybefore using this software. If thesoftware is to be used by youngchildren, the manual should be readand explained to them by an adult.

2 Introduction

There are three different versions ofnintendogs + cats. Regardless ofwhich version you own, it is possibleto unlock all the dog and cat breedsby playing with your pets often, andby using StreetPass™.

nintendogs + cats makes use ofthe Nintendo 3DS system clock.Changing the system's date andtime settings may mean that youare temporarily unable toprogress through the game asnormal.

The puppies and kittens innintendogs + cats never growold or pass away. Real dogs andcats are different, and owningthem as pets is a hugeresponsibility. If you are thinkingof getting a real pet, pleaseconsult with your family andconsider carefully whether youhave sufficient time and energyto devote to caring for a pet.

3 Your First Puppy

The Kennels

♦ The game only begins at thekennels the first time you play.After that, whenever you start the

game, you'll be taken straight to

Touch thenintendogs + catsicon on the HOMEMenu, then touchOPEN to start thegame. When youplay the game for the first time,you'll begin at the kennels. You'llfind many different breeds of dogsand cats here, but initially only ninepuppy breeds will be available foryou to choose from. Try to find theperfect puppy to take home withyou!

Acquiring a puppy or kitten is likegaining a new member of the family.You have to look after it, be kind toit, take it out and generally give itlots of attention. Most of all, youhave to love and cherish it as one ofyour closest friends. Of course, it'snot just about giving your petaffection. Every pet is different, somake sure you get to know eachone's individual personality andquirks. Each dog or cat breed hasits own unique traits, so no twodogs or cats are ever alike. Showeryour pet with love, train it properly,and you’ll have a friend for life!

♦ When you next visit the kennels,you'll find that kittens are alsoavailable.

Choosing a puppyOnce you've stroked a puppy for alittle while, you'll be given aselection of dogs currently availableat the kennels. Choose a breed andtype of coat to get a closer look atthat kind of dog. Once you've founda puppy you like, touch CHOOSETHIS DOG.

When your puppy has settled down,you'll be able to name it. Onceyou've chosen a name, you'll needto teach it to your puppy by sayingit out loud, and then make a note ofit.

♦ In this software, the system'sinner camera is only used forrecognising your face. Imagescaptured by the camera are notused by this software for anyother purpose.

Your puppy willtake a little timeto get used toits new home.Touch onthe lowerscreen to callyour puppyover to you,and spendsome timestroking it. If you give your puppylots of love, it'll settle down beforelong.

♦ The name you write here will bemade public to other StreetPassusers (p. 12). You should not useany information which could beused to identify you personally,nor any language that otherpeople may find offensive.

Call out the nameFace yourpuppy and callout its nameseveral times,following theon-screeninstructions. Your puppy will learn itsname the way you say it the firsttime.

A keyboard will beshown on the lowerscreen once yourpuppy has learnt itsname. Touch theletters to enter thepuppy's name andtouch OK when you're finished.

Make a note of the name

If your puppy has heard thename properly, will appear,and if it hasn't heard it properly,

will appear. After your puppyhas heard the name correctly afew times, it will remember itsown name! Remember to use thesame volume and tone of voicewhen you repeat the name. Ifyou're not having much successafter a few tries, it may bebecause you're too close to themicrophone, speaking too loudlyor changing your tone of voice.Please try again, bearing in mindthe points below.● Hold the system about 15 cm

Once you've taught your puppy itsname and stroked it a lot so you'recomfortable together, it's time toteach your dog its first trick.Teaching your dog how to followyour commands is important ifyou're going to get along welltogether.

When yourpuppy's readyto learn tricks,the explanationfor how toteach yourpuppy to "sit"will be shownon screen.Follow theinstructions andkeep repeatingthe process until your puppy hasremembered the trick. Touch TIPSto see the explanation whenever youlike.

5 Saving

In order to saveyour progress,including the statusof your pets, youritems and thelayout of yourroom, you need totouch SAVE while in your room.Make sure you save before quittingnintendogs + cats, so that you donot lose any progress.

To delete all save data relatedto your progress in the game,press and hold + + + simultaneously when thenintendogs + cats logo isdisplayed after starting thegame.Deleted save data cannot berecovered, so please be careful.

Deleting All Save Data

● Do not turn the power off, resetthe system or remove GameCards/SD Cards while saving.Make sure not to get dirt in theterminals. These actions couldresult in permanent data loss.

● Do not use external accessoriesor software to modify your savedata, as this can lead to aninability to progress or loss ofsave data. Any modification ispermanent, so be careful.

6 At Home

Your pet will get hungry and thirsty,so make sure you give it enoughfood and drink. Find out if your petis hungry or thirsty by checking itsInfo Screen (p. 8).

Food & Drink

Play with your pet using toys, orjust enjoy dressing it up withvarious accessories. Throw a toyand call your puppy's name, and itwill fetch the toy.

Your pet's coat will get dirty, soyou'll need to look after it. You canbrush your pet when it's in front ofyou, or select a type of shampoo togive it a bath.

7 Out and About

When going for a walk, touch thelead and slide it in the direction youwant to walk. There are lots ofplaces to visit, including parks,shops, a café and a gym. You canalso use the pedometer to walk yourdog: just close the system and carryit around with you, and the stepsyou take in real life will be reflectedin the game.

Walking Your Puppy

Each discipline is divided intodifferent levels of competition(cups). Once you've won acompetition, you can proceed to thenext cup. You can only take part inthe same competition twice per day.If you change your system's timesetting, you may be temporarilyunable to enter a competition.

9 Interacting With Your Pet

Slide the stylus on the silhouette onthe lower screen to stroke thepuppy or kitten displayed on theupper screen. When the brush andtreat icons appear, touch the brushicon to use the brush to groom yourpet, or touch the treat icon to giveyour pet a treat.

10 Owning a Kitten

Owning a kitten is somewhatdifferent from owning a puppy.

Choosing a Kitten

The kennelsalso have catsavailable. Onceyou've gotused to takingcare of yourpuppy, you can go back to thekennels to choose a kitten.

Kitten Behaviour

Unlike puppies,kittens don'tpay peoplemuch attention.They also won'tlearn any tricks,so it's best to leave them to theirown devices. From time to time,kittens will go out and bring back apresent for their owner.

Taking Care of Kittens

When they gethungry, kittensneed to be fedcat food ratherthan dog food.They also likeclimbing up to high places, sogetting some tall furniture for yourroom will keep them happy.

11 Using the Diary

The Diary is used to interact withother owners that you have comeinto contact with via StreetPass(p. 12).

The first time you open the Diary,extra data for the Diary will becreated on the SD Card andnintendogs + cats will be registeredfor use with StreetPass on yoursystem. Without this extra data onthe SD Card, you will not be able touse the Diary or StreetPass.

The screen below is displayed whenyou open the Diary. Use the stylusto write notes in your Diary.

Touch stickers in the Diary to viewdetails of other players and petsyou've met via StreetPass. You caninvite another player's pet to playwith one of your pets in the park.

♦ Unless you've already created aMii using Mii Maker™ (found onthe HOME Menu), your nicknamewill not be displayed in yourowner info. To make yournickname appear, create a Mii andset it in your owner info.

12 StreetPass

Register nintendogs + cats for usewith StreetPass and you will be ableto interact with other players andtheir pets when you take yourNintendo 3DS system out with you.

Here is what will happen if yousuccessfully communicate withanother player via StreetPass.

StreetPass Features

To communicate using this feature,all players must activate StreetPassfor this software on theirNintendo 3DS systems.

● Various thingsare sent to theother player,including yourowner and petinfo, andwhatever photo or present you'veset.

● You can viewthe details ofother playersyou've metand thepresentsyou've received from them in theDiary.

● Touch MEET

UP AT THEPARK in theDiary to goto the parkto play withanother player's Mii and one oftheir pets.

● As you meetnew players,more dogbreeds willbecomeavailable atthe kennels.

♦ After meeting a player viaStreetPass, you will not be ableto meet them via StreetPass againfor a while.

Activating StreetPass

Please follow the steps below inorder to activate StreetPass.

Open the Diary and registernintendogs + cats for use withStreetPass on your system.

Set your Mii, photo, message andpresent. You can only set photosyou've taken while playing thegame.

Meeting People ThroughStreetPass

♦ For StreetPass to functioncorrectly, the system must be onand wireless communication mustbe enabled.

You can restrict StreetPassfunctionality via Parental Controls.

Each time youmeet a playervia StreetPass,a sticker will beplaced in yourDiary. Touch asticker to see information aboutanother owner.

Deactivating StreetPass

To deactivateStreetPass, openthe SystemSettings and selectDATAMANAGEMENT,then STREETPASS MANAGEMENT.Touch the icon for this software title,then select DEACTIVATESTREETPASS.

Close the system and carry it aroundwith you to automatically exchangeinfo with other players ofnintendogs + cats who are usingStreetPass.

❸ Carry your system around withyou

♦ If you want to reactivateStreetPass, simply go back to theDiary and registernintendogs + cats for use withStreetPass on your system again.

13 Other Features

Select the AR Camera itemfrom your Supplies andcapture an AR Card onscreen with the outercameras. You can get yourpuppy to do tricks andeven take 3D photos of your pet.

Using AR Cards

To use SpotPass, you must first:- Accept the Nintendo 3DS Service

User Agreement and Privacy Policy

- Set up an internet connection

If you register nintendogs + cats foruse with SpotPass, your system willautomatically connect to wirelessnetworks with internet access andyou will receive special items, whichappear as stickers in the Diary.

SpotPass is active only when thesystem is in Sleep Mode and withinrange of a compatible internetaccess point.

The AR Cards come includedwith the Nintendo 3DS system.For more information on how touse AR Cards, please refer tothe Nintendo 3DS OperationsManual.
