    > 4000 people die from choking each year

    Adults > 65 are twice as likely to die as

    younger people from choking

    Most cases can be prevented

    Trying to swallow large pieces of food that

    havent been chewed sufficiently

    Eating too quickly

    Eating while engaged in other activities

    Alcohol or drugs

    Dentures

    Preventing Choking

    Do not leave small objects within reach ofinfant

    Feed infants soft foods

    Have child sit while eating Teach children not to eat too fast or to talk or

    laugh while eating

    Cut up foods a child could choke on intosmall pieces

    Supervise children while they eat

    Obstruction

    Food or other foreign bodies in mouth

    Tongue (unresponsive victim)

    Teeth or other body tissues (injury)

    Vomit

    Wheezing or high pitched sounds with breath

    Do not interrupt coughing or attempts to

    expel object

    Victim may look frantic and be clutching at

    throat

    Victim may have pale or bluish coloring

    around mouth and nail beds

    Victim may be coughing weakly andsilently or not at all

    Victim cannot speak

    Ask victim if he or she is

    choking

    If victim cant answer

    begin choking care

    If victim not breathing, open

    airway and give 2 rescue

    breaths

    If first breath doesnt go in

    try again

    If second breath doesnt go

    in give care for choking

    who is coughing:

    Encourage coughing to clear object

    Call 9-1-1 if object not immediately expelled

    Give abdominal thrusts
