Simulation is a technology that enables the accurate analysis of complex business

processes. Through a simple software interface, the user creates a computerized

version of a business process, called a "model." ProcessModel uses a flow-chart

design format which is easy to learn and is already familiar to many managers.

Simple click and drag functions will be comfortable to anyone familiar with standard

    Windows applications.

Simulation -- The computerized model allows you to operate and view the process

operation from your desk. On the computer, you can run a process in seconds that

may take weeks or months to run in the real world. The key benefit is that all of the

analysis and testing takes place in a simulated computer environment, and is

    therefore risk free.

    Discuss case studies

Flow charting A visualization tool primarily good for documenting processes and identifying changes insimple systems

Value Stream Mapping(VSM) is avisualization tooloriented to the Toyota version ofLean Manufacturing. It helps to understand and streamline work processes using the tools and techniques of Lean Manufacturing. The goal of VSM is to identify, demonstrate and decrease wastein the process. VSM can serve as astarting point to help recognize waste and identify its causes. Value Stream Mapping is primarily a

communication tool(a simple, back of the envelope method) applicable specifically when working inprocesses that exhibit the following characteristics:

    1. A clear definition of the process

    2. Low variability in the processing times

    3. Low variability in the routing

    4. Low variability in product mix.

Simulation An analysis tool used identify problems and test changes on systems. Simulation can be used onall types of systems, but have particular value on systems that exhibit the following characteristics:

    1. Complexity involving many steps or resources or many possible routes

    2. Product mix that changes3. Variability in processing time

    4. Variability in routing of entities through the process

    5. Resources that may be used by several value streams

Simulation allows more than viewing of these complex systems. It also allows thetesting of new concepts to see how changes will perform before making the change

Layout The drawing space for your model. The layout continues to expand as

objects are moved against the right and bottom edge of the layout.

Toolbar The main tools used in the creation and documentation of a model.

Double-click on any object to lock into that tools operation.

    Selector tool

    Swim-lanes tool create departments

    Shape tool

Line Draw Tool Five line styles are available

Text Tool Place text on the layout or in an object

    Object numbering tool

    Zooming tool

Gallery The formatting control center. This only changes the graphic

characteristics of the shapes and lines. It does not effect the operating

characteristics of a model. You can modify color, line style, line ends, shadows, etc.

You should experiment with different options. The key -- Less is More. Only add

enphasis to those things that you want to standout. If everything has color and

shape changes then nothing will have emphasis.

Palette The shapes used in building a model. There are many shaper palettes

included. You can create custom shape palettes and import graphics to be used as

    shapes.

Dialog The entry point for the operating characteristics of the element or shape.Double-click on a shape or element to change the focus of the dialog.

This slide is to teach fast and effective methods for building a model. Although the

interface is intuitive, there are capabilities that are not apparent at first. Learning

each will help you to develop working model in a fraction of the time without these

    methods

output routings. Entities do not move to the next activity or storage until there is

available capacity and the condition or rule for routing the entity has been satisfied.

Resource connections Define the use of resources in performing activities or

    moving entities.

Order signals Define the trigger for ordering of entities on an arrival or route.

Run lengthwill usually be set in increments of 24 hours or 168 hr to represent a full

    24 hour time period

Warm-up lengthis the amount of time that a model runs before collecting statistics.

It allows you to fill the simulation entities so that the model will behave normallyrather than in an excelerated manner. A bank (opens empty and idle each day)

model does not require warm-up (and indeed should not have warm-up). Common

examples of situations requiring warm-up are manufacturing in general, hospital

emergency rooms, 24-hour telephone exchanges, etc. Sometimes it is possible to

shorten the amount of warm-up required by initializing storages (buffers) in the

simulation model to half-full (versus default of empty), thus starting the model closer

    to average conditions.

Replicationsis the number of times you will run the model with a different random

number starting point. Each replication will provide a different view of what couldhappen in the model. Looking at the combination of the replications provides more

complete picture of the system under study.

Show Animation allows the animation to be turned off when experiments are being

run. With the animation off, the simulation will run 100 times faster.

Speed Control Bar-- The speed of the simulation can be controlled by moving the

Speed Control Bar left for slower, right for faster.

Pan To pan the layout during simulation, click, hold and drag the mouse in the

direction you want it to move

Input queue capacity The number above and to the left of a capacity show the

current contents of the that activities input queue.

Capacity If an activity has a capacity of only one then entities will appear on top

of the activity. If the capacity is greater than one the number below the activity will

show the contents in the capacity.

Resource Status Lights Resources have status lights associated with themindicating when they are in operation. The status light is green when the resource is

being utilized, blue when it is idle, and red when it is not available.

understanding the behavior of a model:

    Output Detail

    Activity report

    Entity Summary report

    Resource state graphs

    Time series graphs

    Output Summary

    Cost reports

The simulation doesnt need to be rerun in order to see the output statistics. If the

statistics have been previously collected, simply click on the view menu and then

select the output Detail of Summary.
