Register for Extended LearningFollow these steps to succesfully register for classes.Bates’ Extending Learning courses are short-term educational opportunities that can help you build your career skills, gain professional certification or explore a personal interest. STEP 4Schedule an appointment with a Career Specialist A career specialist can help you learn about certificate and degree requirements, support services, college policies and procedures and work with you to develop your educational plan. Your career specialist will also talk with you about general education or basic studies requirements. During this appointment, students will complete an application form and pay the non-refundable $62.70 application fee. To speak with a career specialist, call 253.680.7002. STEP 5Complete the registration and enrollment form You will complete the registration and enrollment form with your career specialist. Remember, tuition and fees are due at this time. You may pay in the registration office, M210, at Downtown Campus or in A115 at South Campus.

STEP 6Attend a new student orientation The New Student Orientation provides helpful information that will prepare you for your career education program. The orientation is usually the week before the start of a new quarter. If you cannot attend the orientation, visit www.bates.ctc.edu/MyBates and click on New Student Orientation for the online orientation. If you have questions or need further assistance at any time during this process, please call Student Services at 253.680.7002 or 253.680.7403.

Register for Career Education STEP 1Attend an Information SessionLearn how to get started at Bates Technical College! Bring your questions, your career choices and any test scores you may have. The information session begins promptly, so please arrive on time to avoid missing important information. You can also set up a follow-up appointment for educational planning.

STEP 2Apply for Financial AidFinancial aid is available for qualified students. Apply early to receive full funding. Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and sign the free application using your Personal Identification Number (PIN). If you don’t have a PIN, apply online www.pin.ed.gov and receive your PIN within 2-3 days.

After you submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) within four to five days. FAFSA worksheets are available at both the Downtown and South Campus financial aid offices. If you have any questions about your FAFSA, visit www.studentaid.gov or call 1.800.4.FED.AID.

STEP 3Complete Entrance Testing The COMPASS test provides placement information for general education courses, which some career education programs may require. Get a testing schedule for both Downtown and South Campus at the Downtown Assessment Center, M216, or call 253.680.7030. The fee for this test is $25.25. To request accommodations, contact the Disability Support Services (DSS) office at 253.680.7013, (TTY) 253.680.7045.

Carlson Potts - Making Connections What does welding and glass blowing

have in common? That’s a connection

Carlson Potts wanted to explore. A sculptor

who has drawn on welding in his artwork

for a number of years, he originally moved

to Tacoma for a job in the Hot Shop at the

Museum of Glass in 2007.

But the economic downturn motivated

him to enhance his skills in the industrial

side of welding. Now he’s on target to

graduate this summer with an Associates of

Technology degree.

Even though he already holds a Bachelor’s

in business and a Master’s in glassblowing

from Temple University in Philadelphia, Bates

fills a void in his career training. “If it weren’t

for programs like this, the industry wouldn’t

turn out the quality work that it currently

does,” says Carlson.

Although Carlson plans to continue with

his artwork, he looks forward to having a

higher position on the union list after he

finishes the program at Bates and gets

certified for structural welding for pipes.

“Because of Bates, I will be able to get a

job with a prevailing wage and premium

benefits.”

Paying for college Tuition for Bates’ 53 Career Education programs varies by program and programs vary in duration. Quarterly tuition ranges from $1,079.28 to $1,946.41. To get tu-ition information on the specific program that interests you, see http://www.bates.ctc.edu/eo/CareerTraining/pdf/tuition.pdf or call 253.680.7019. Financial AidFinancial aid is available for eligible students. Students and their families do not necessarily need to be considered low-income to qualify for some kinds of financial aid, but students must demonstrate financial need to be eligible for federal assistance. Even if you’re receiving financial assistance from agency sources (L&I, VA, DVR, WorkSource, WorkFirst), you may be eligible for additional grant aid from state and federal financial aid sources. We determine eligibility by comparing the difference between the cost of attending school and what you and your family can afford to pay. Apply EarlyStudents are encouraged to apply for financial aid as early as possible since pre-qualification may take up to eight weeks from your application submission date. Award of financial aid notification is by mail and begins in the month of July. Financial aid is intended to supplement, not replace, a person’s resources. If your combined resources aren’t sufficient to cover expenses, you may be eligible for financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships, low-interest loans, or work study employment. Information submitted on the financial aid form determines your eligibility for grants, scholarships, work study and low-interest loans. Students should plan to use personal resources to buy books and supplies prior to their first financial aid disbursement.

Eligibility for Financial AidA student is eligible for financial aid if he or she is:• Attending Bates to obtain a degree or certificate• A U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen• Making satisfactory progress in a

program of study, as defined by the institution’s satisfactory progress criteria• Not in default on any previous student loans or owing a refund on any grant• Registered for the draft with Selective Service if required by law• A high school graduate, a GED completer, or earn passing scores on the COMPASS exam

The college does not have a preferred lender list nor does it restrict students to any particular lender. We encourage each student and/or parent borrower to research and make an informed lender choice. Bates Technical College does not participate in revenue sharing with any lender nor does it have an agreement for referrals with any lending institution.

Foundation FAQs

Who can apply for Foundation scholarships? All Bates students registered in degree and certificate programs are eligible to apply for scholarships. Some scholarships are open to all students while others are limited to specific programs. Please read each scholarship announcement to determine eligibility.

Can I apply for a scholarship if I receive financial aid? Yes. We encourage you to apply for scholarships even if you are receiving financial aid. But any funds you receive as a scholarship are deducted from your financial aid budget.

I already have a degree. May I still apply for a scholarship? Yes. Previous educational experience does not disqualify you from applying for scholarships through the Foundation.

Can I apply for a scholarship even if I received one in a previous quarter? Yes. We encourage you to apply for scholarships each quarter.

I already receive funding for tuition. Why should I apply for a scholarship? Some scholarships provide funding for tuition as well as books and supplies. If an outside agency covers your tuition and supplies, you are not eligible to apply for scholarships. If an agency pays tuition only, you may apply for scholarships to help pay for books and supplies.

How do I use my scholarship for books and supplies? If a scholarship provides for books and supplies, students have two options:

• The Bates Bookstore will establish an account for you to charge books and supplies. You submit all receipts to the Foundation Office, M332, downtown campus.

• If you want to purchase books and supplies elsewhere, seek Foundation approval before you make your purchase. Submit your signed receipts along with documentation signed by your instructor verifying that the books and supplies are relevant to the training. The Bates Foundation then reimburses you by check.

David Cubean - Bates Foundation Believer “The Bates Foundation showed they believed in me, and

this helped me to believe in myself,” says David Cubean.

The Legal Office Assistant student received three

scholarships in a year.

David didn’t have a male role model

growing up, and his mother passed away before he was

18. He later enlisted in the Army. Then, during a field

exercise, he had an accident that left him in a

wheelchair for nearly a year.

Soon after that, David met his future wife

who kept him on the straight and narrow.

“Although the road has been long and

hard, it has been more than worth the

effort it took to get me here,” says David.

Through the process of applying for

scholarships, David found they weren’t just for the

people who earned straight A’s. “I didn’t realize the

variety of scholarships Bates offers. The selection

criteria vary with each scholarship,” he says.

“When I talk with new students about my

experience with scholarships, they rush to apply

when the Foundation announces them.”

Winning scholarships served as a catalyst

for David to get involved in student activities. “I

attended leadership seminars, conferences and

became active in class,” he says. “Last year, I was

president of the Legal Club. Receiving scholarships

set the tone for me to volunteer for college activities—

to give back to the college and other students,

especially new students.”

David’s passion for learning has given him a sense

of direction. “Receiving scholarships motivated me

to work hard and get involved in school. I am

committed to doing my best and excelling, thanks

to the Bates Foundation.”

Tuition Refund PolicyA student who has paid tuition before the quarter starts but is unable to attend the class may receive a full tuition refund. After the first day of class, Bates grant refunds as follows:

• Within the first five days of class - 80%

• After the 5th & prior to the 20th calendar day - 40%

• After the 20th calendar day - None

The General Refund policy applies to all students in state-supported programs. The student or the funding program administrator must request the refunds in writing. For students enrolled in special programs, we will make refunds only to the funding program administrator. Students who complete their programs and withdraw from the college before the end of the quarter are entitled to a prorated refund of the quarter fee upon instructor certification.

General EducationTo satisfy degree and certificate requirements, students need to complete certain general education (GE) classes. Career specialists and faculty can help you create an education plan that will keep you on track for your goals. Contact a career specialist or visit www.bates.ctc.edu/academics for more information on course descriptions and pre-requisites.

General education courses are open to career education students, high school students and others pursuing college credit or preparatory goals and include college-level and college-preparatory courses. COMPASS scores and the course work help determine pre-requisites you need to complete. Some students may need to build basic skills in mathematics, reading or writing before taking a general education course.

Associate degrees and certificates of competency require completion of a specific number and distribution of pre-college and college-level GE courses. Requirements vary depending on the career education program, the credential, and the track a student chooses to pursue. Students should plan to take at least one GE or basic studies course each quarter until they meet the GE requirement for their intended credential.

Bates Technical College has implemented Common Course Numbering to make course transfer among the state’s 34 community and technical colleges as easy as possible for students, advisors and receiving institutions.

Adult Basic EducationIf you need to satisfy some basic education requirements to continue on your career path, Bates can help.

Our Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED) preparation classes help those who may or may not have a high school diploma improve mathematics, reading and writing skills. ABE provides a strong general education foundation to adults so they can benefit from technical education and gain job-specific skills. In many cases, students can start career education programs while also taking ABE classes. GED preparation classes help students planning to take the required five tests. Bates offers ABE and GED day and evening classes with twice quarterly start dates at Bates and our affiliated Tacoma locations.

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes help adults learn to use the English language in their education, work and daily activities. Bates offers day and evening ESL classes in speaking, listening, reading and writing. In some cases, students can start career education programs while also taking ESL classes. Twice quarterly start dates are available.

William Luk - International Culinarian An international student from

Taiwan, William Luk didn’t want a

high school diploma.

“I wasn’t doing well in high

school,” he says. “I wanted to learn

a trade and get a job.

”He and his father began a

search to find the perfect school.

They found Bates through an

agency called Oh! America, and

William was drawn to the culinary

arts program.

“I like working in the kitchen and

with people, and Bates’ culinary

arts was the perfect fit for me. I’m

getting as much education as I

can, doing what I enjoy the

most - cooking.”

He will graduate next year

with an Associate of Technology

Beverly Morris - A Precise Fit “Nothing stops me,” says Beverly

Morris, a single mother determined

to make a better life for her family.

Originally from Washington, she

moved to Utah and worked as a

truck driver until she became a

mother. “I realized truck driving

wasn’t the right profession for me,”

she says.

She knew she wanted to enter

the machinist field and began to

research colleges in Washington.

“Bates has been terrific. From the

moment I first called the child care

center, I knew I found the perfect

place for my daughter and me,” she

says.

“My career specialist walked

me step-by-step through the

enrollment process and financial

aid was a tremendous help. The

network of resources in student

services was invaluable,” says

Bevery.

Beverly is on target to graduate

in the spring with her Associate of

Technology degree. She hopes to

land a union job in Skagit County.

high school, so he withdrew and enrolled

in Bates Technical High School.

“I found the perfect program with

apparel/fashion design, and now I’m

graduating with a certificate and a

high school diploma next year with no

student loans,” he says.

Devon enjoys the hands-on

Devon Pace enrolled in Sheet

Metal Technology as a high school

student but didn’t have success the

first time around.

Four years later, he ran into a

friend and former Bates student

who was making a good living in

the sheet metal industry.

“I knew I needed to re-enroll,” says

Devon. “The first time didn’t work

because I wasn’t dedicated. This

time, I’m learning a lot and excelling

faster than before. I never have to

worry about falling behind because

my instructor, Steve MacKay, is

there to help me.”

Devon is on track to graduate

with an Associate of Technology

degree in 2011.

He plans to join the sheet metal

apprenticeship program after

graduation.

Tsehaincsh McKonnen - A Nurturing Nurse A native of Ethiopia, Tsehaincsh

McKonnen loves to care for elderly

people.

Her home country lacks centers like

the one where she works in Shoreline,

she says. “It is a poor country, and I

wish there were these facilities,” says

Tsehaincsh.

Her employer encouraged her to

continue her education. “So I came to

Bates,” she says.

“I was out of school for a long time,

and now that I’m older, attending

college is very challenging.” To help

overcome that challenge, Tsehaincsh

rents an apartment near Bates so she

can study, then travels north on the

weekend to spend time with family.

Tsehaincsh wants to continue her

service to the elderly. “After I complete

toward becoming a Registered Nurse.

“With the support of her close-knit

group of fellow students and the

encouragement of her family and

coworkers, she’s on track to do just

that. “If I can make it, anybody can

Marcus Ortega - An Electric Fix “I left high school when I was 16 and

worked several jobs, but I always felt I never

found the right fit,” says Marcus Ortega.

“Something was missing. I realized I needed

to find my passion.”

To find it, he looked to his youth. That’s

when he enjoyed learning about how things

worked around the house and fixing them

when they didn’t.

“I decided my calling was in electrical

construction, so I did some research and

found Bates’ program,” says Marcus. “I’m the

only one in my family to attend college,

so my mother was extremely proud of my

decision.”

Marcus is on target to graduate with his

Associates of Technology degree. He credits

his instructors for helping him succeed.

Tahonishi Bell - Raising Success When Tahonishi Bell learned she

was pregnant, she turned to Bates.

“Enrolling in Early Childhood

Education as a 16-year-old, and

a new mother was life changing,”

says Tahonishi. “I didn’t know

much about parenting, and this

program was a perfect fit.”

Through Bates Technical High

School, Tahonishi trained for a

career while earning both college

and high school credit. After her

first quarter, she saw a dramatic

change in her parenting style.

“I was naïve and needed to

adjust the way I parent,” she says.

“Now, as a mother of two, I feel

like I’ve improved 100 percent. My

instructor Laurie O’Neill has been

a tremendous teacher and mentor

to me, and for that I’m grateful.”

Now 21, Tahonishi plans to

enroll in City University to earn

her Bachelor’s Degree in early

childhood education. She wants

to become a child psychologist.

Ben Olson - Expert Parenting “When I came to Bates as a first-

time parent five-and-a-half years

ago, I was looking for classes on

early education,” says Ben Olson. “I

found the answer with Bates’ Home

and Family Life classes.”

Ben enjoyed the courses so

much that he continued to enroll

and became active in his local co-

operative preschool in Wapato. This

year, he’s president of the co-op.

“During the past few years, I have

been helping other parents with

their kids. I feel like a mentor to

them,” says Ben. “I understand what

new parents are going through

because I’ve been there. Bates gave

my wife and me information and a

safe place to talk with others who

are going through similar issues,”

he says.

From green parenting classes

to courses on fathering, Ben is a

believer that education is the key to

success.

“Sometimes it’s nice to know

you’re not alone and can bounce

ideas off of others. Bates is a great

place to not just learn about

parenting, but to grow as a person

and a parent,” he says.

Bates helps light up your holiday seasonThis winter, Bates Technical College students will help turn on the holiday cheer at two of South Sound’s largest holiday light displays.

Thanks to David Ellis, an Electrical Power and Process Automation student, The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s 21st annual Zoolights

will use several updated controllers that supply the stop-action animation in displays.

Across town at the 14th annual Fantasy Lights at Spanaway Park, a group of Bates students have created two long-necked sauropods that will transport spectators back to prehistoric times. The dinosaurs reach 15 feet into the night sky and will greet cars as they travel through the sparkling displays.

This shining example of teamwork represents the 13th consecutive year that Bates students in the welding, electronic equipment service, biomedical equipment repair and commercial truck driving career education programs have added fun, colorful and unique displays.
