INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Bath Theatre Matters Conference 2013

“Our creative industries are a real success story. They are worth more than £36 billion a year; they generate £70,000 every minute for the UK economy; and they employ 1.5 million people in the UK. According to industry figures, the creative industries account for around £1

in every £10 of the UK’s exports. With the right support, they have the potential to bring even more benefits to our culture and economy.”- Department for Culture, Media & Sport, February 2013.

The future of the arts as we know it is set to change. With budgets getting tighter and with cuts to Local Authority and Arts Council funding, not to mention the current planned education reforms what does the future hold for the arts?At this time it looks like creative subjects will hold less weight on the National Curriculum in our schools and with little money being put into artistic subjects, and for example, Dance and Drama being rated as a single GCSE mark what incentive is there for schools to plough money into or promote arts related subjects? You simply need to answer this one question – What would life be like without the arts?

The Bath Theatre Matters Conference is a chance to begin these conversations. To look at how we work as artists. To find new ways of working and collaborating together and forging stronger links both regionally and nationally. United we stand strong and the My Theatre Matters Campaign can act as a collective voice for all of us and become a catalyst for change.

I do not know what the future holds but I do believe that Theatre Matters and that together we are strong and can keep theatre alive. We must learn to adapt to whatever challenges we are faced if we are to survive the storms that are on the horizon.Thank you all for attending and supporting this conference. I hope you find it interesting, useful and relevant. It has taken a year in the planning and I would like to thank everyone who has given up their own free time to make this conference happen.

Keynote Speakers:WestEndProducerWestEndProducer, or WEP, is thrilled to be speaking at the Theatre Matters – Bath Theatre Conference, indeed he loves nothing more than talking about theatre. Although he is not a fan of people talking during his theatre shows, unless of course they are the actors, in which case it should be expected that they talk when delivering their lines. Unless they are particularly bad. In which case they should just be quiet and jump up and down for a bit. WestEndProducer has been involved in theatre and entertainment all his life. His work has

taken him all over the world, and he has been lucky enough to work with, and learn from many of today’s top actors, entertainers, and creatives – including both of The Krankies. Recently he ran the first ever online talent contest – ‘search for a twitter star’ – which had it’s live final at the Lyric Theatre. Following from this he ran ‘search for a twitter composer’ at the Soho Theatre – which aimed to find and help develop new composer’s work. He is a big supporter of emerging artists and believes that new talent needs a new audience, and new audiences need the new talent.WEP will be discussing, amongst other things, west end musicals, and the state of the west end in general, producing shows in today’s climate, and how collaboration could be a key factor in the future of theatre.

Jon MonieJon Monie is a hugely experienced and versatile Presenter, Actor and Writer. Not only a familiar face on ITV West for more than a decade, Jon has also worked extensively in most genres of television – and across most networks. Religion for BBC1, live light-entertainment for BBC3, quiz shows for Endemol, pseudo-sports programmes for Sky… Throw in some radio, voice overs and emceeing too… It’s a diverse CV. The one constant is Jon’s unique brand of banter and quick-witted humour. As a result of his projects, Jon has grappled with a

multitude of activities including tank-driving and fire-walking, and has interviewed celebrities ranging from Shirley McClaine to Miss Piggy, Gene Wilder to the Spice Girls and Dame Edna Everage to Lord Richard Attenborough. On the acting front, over the past 15 years Jon has won great acclaim for his regular performances as the comic lead in Bath’s Theatre Royal’s highly regarded pantomimes, alongside panto legend Chris Harris. His typically varied roles include Wishee Washee in Aladdin, Simple Simon in Jack and the Beanstalk and Ugly Sister in Cinderella. Jon also performs as one half of the comedy double-act ‘Avent & Monie’ (playing at many comedy festivals and venues throughout the country including London’s Hackney Empire) and is a regular performer with comedy improv troupe Instant Wit.
