Top class performances Marvellous entertainment Terrific value

The start of a New Year is traditionally the time to review and refresh routines and make resolutions. I do hope that one New Year resolution you will feel able to make is to visit The Mission Theatre in the weeks ahead and enjoy the variety of first class entertainment on offer. Whilst some resolutions can be tedious to maintain, I am sure that becoming a regular visitor to The Mission will not prove onerous. This Spring season we have cracking comedies, magical musicals, supreme songsters and family fun. There really is something for everyone in the months ahead and this ‘diet’ of entertainment is one you will find easy to follow.

Happy New Year!

Ann Garner Artistic Director The Mission Theatre

2014 is a significant year in the life of The Mission Theatre’s resident company: Next Stage. In May, Next Stage celebrates 20 years of bringing first class, cutting-edge drama to Bath audiences. I find it hard to grasp the fact that it really is 20 years since Andrew Ellison and I set up the fledgling Next Stage Theatre Company and I directed Educating Rita which opened on May 18th 1994. Our aim then, as now, was that Next Stage would produce in Bath some of the best 20th and 21st Century drama, delivered to a professional standard and frequently in-the-round. Amazing to think that since 1994 Next Stage has brought nearly 150 productions to the city and toured some of the most memorable shows to Bristol, Scarborough, New York, London and The Minack Theatre in Cornwall. On top of this, nine years ago, Next Stage Theatre Company opened The Mission Theatre in the heart of Bath, breathing new life into a derelict building and bringing first class entertainment to the new venue.

Our thriving Youth Theatre is also celebrating 20 years of existence in 2014 and we hope, throughout the year, both adult and youth casts will bring yet more fine drama and ground-breaking productions to Bath audiences. Our birthday year begins with a revival of The Norman Conquests, one of the finest comedies written by Next Stage’s patron Sir Alan Ayckbourn. The trilogy will be staged in-the-round and promises to get our birthday year going with a swing! Do come along and join in the celebrations. Ann Garner

Covering one night in the lives of two strangers, this warm, compassionate and darkly humorous new play explores how people deal with the most difficult human situations.A mesmerising account of how beautiful relationships can develop between different people, no matter how bad their shared experiences might be.‘Ellie Lawrence’s portrayal of a seventeen year old who has nothing left to live for is close to perfect... Matt Fox’s script was very tight: effortlessly switching between humour and tragedy.’ Showtime‘A powerful production of tragedy, trauma, regret, life and friendship. Next Stage Theatre Company presents

Betrayalby Harold Pinter

The very capacity for love itself is sometimes based on betraying not only other loved ones, but even ourselves. (Robert Egbert – from a review of Betrayal)

Betrayal explores a seven-year affair involving a married couple, Emma and Robert, and Robert’s “close friend” Jerry, who is also married. Pinter’s compelling play uses reverse chronology to explore the levels of betrayal between the couples: the first scene takes place after the affair has ended, the final scene ends when the affair begins.

As a fine example of the kind of production for which Next Stage has a deservedly high reputation, Betrayal is an eagerly awaited addition to the outstanding programme of plays planned for the company’s 20th birthday year.

Staged in-the-round and directed by Next Stage’s Artistic Director Ann Garner, this masterful dissection of love and betrayal should prove a compulsive evening’s entertainment within the intimate setting of The Mission Theatre. Don’t miss it!

Bath University Student Theatre presents

A Woman Of No Importanceby Oscar Wilde

TICKETS£8 (£5 concs)

ICIA box office at the University of Bath 01225 386777

https://www.bath.ac.uk/icia/ events/student.php

Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy, glitters with wit and charm - swinging from heartbreak to hilarity. When the respectable Mrs Arbuthnot and her naïve son Gerald spend a weekend in the company of the dissolute Lord Illingworth and his patrician friends, long-buried secrets – from illegitimacy to infidelity - rise to the surface with explosive force. From the young and idealistic Hester, to the cynical Mrs Allonby, all of the characters have secrets of their own to disguise – the question is not ‘whodunnit’, but ‘who will get away with it’.

Dragged screaming into the 20th century by Bath University Student Theatre, who are setting it in 1935, the show drips with sexual tension, supressed emotion and social unease – all expressed with the biting and incisive humour for which Wilde is so famous.

House and Garden by Alan Ayckbourn

GD Seventy Eight Music Inc. presents

Julyo: Mandolin Italiano + special guestsAgency: Kammamuri Inc

House in The Theatre Upstairs

Garden in The Main Auditorium

To celebrate the company’s 20th Birthday on May 18th, Next Stage’s Artistic Director Ann Garner is presenting possibly her most ambitious project yet! In House & Garden Next Stage patron Sir Alan Ayckbourn came up with a devilish theatrical conceit whereby the chaotic home life of Teddy and Trish Platt would unfold in two auditoria simultaneously with actors leaving one set to travel to the next, hopefully arriving on the other stage at the correct time! With The Theatre Upstairs playing host to 50 audience members and the Main Auditorium accommodating another 50, plus an entire garden fête, these are two productions you will not want to miss.

Giulio “Julyo” D’agostino is an Italian guitarist, mandolin player, songwriter, producer and bass player of Italian origin who has several International Awards for his film scoring work. His music has been featured on numerous TV and radio commercials worldwide including Coca Cola and Calvin Klein.

Come along to a show that will be utterly fascinating, as Julyo’s innovative and charming mandolin and guitar playing relaxes you into a reverie. www.julyo.net
