The Mission Theatre, 32 Corn Street, Bath BA1 1UF 01225 428600

Nearly 10 years ago, on January 24th 2005 a lady walked through the doors of The Mission Theatre. She had a ticket to see the opening night of our inaugural show Comic Potential, by company patron Sir Alan Ayckbourn. I don’t know who the lady was, but she might read this and remember that she was greeted by someone who kept shaking her hand, ushering her in and saying over and over again “Welcome, welcome to The Mission Theatre. You are our very first audience member!” Yes, I was the nervous Artistic Director shaking that hand and pinching myself in disbelief. Had Next Stage Theatre Company really managed to open an independent theatre in the heart of Bath in just 6 weeks?

I had received the keys to the building on November 7th 2004 and immediately had 13 contractors on site, a cement mixer churning in the auditorium, and drilling, carpentry and painting going on throughout the building. The entire space had to be re-wired, there was no heating through the bitterly cold weeks before and after Christmas, full stage curtaining had to be measured and hung in both auditoria and at every window. The aisle between the raised flooring areas that used to hold the wooden pews had to be filled in to create a theatre in the round performance space in our Main Auditorium and the stage in The Theatre Upstairs had to be re-boarded and turned through 70 degrees. The small upstairs kitchen had to be kitted out, toilets, including one with disabled access, had to be built, a technical room created for sound and light, a heating/cooling system installed in the theatre and an entire lighting rig designed and imported so as not to impact on the fabric of this lovely Grade 2 listed building. Auditorium chairs had to be chosen and ordered whilst everything necessary to acquire a Public Entertainment Licence was put in place.

Cleaning, painting and decorating were carried out by a team of Next Stage volunteers. Publicity, tickets, programmes and refreshments all had to be procured and stored, whilst for two weeks over Christmas all work stopped for the festive break.

Then, with just 3 days to go until opening night, our Public Entertainment Licence was awarded and we received the following from Sir Alan Ayckbourn:

How wonderful that Bath has its very own Theatre-in-the-Round! Congratulations Next Stage and welcome to a distinguished club! I’m delighted, too, that your inaugaural production is to be ‘Comic Potential’. A play concerned very much with the “3 L’s” - ‘Life, Laughter and Love’. Every success with the show - and long live The Mission Theatre. Best regards as ever, Alan A.

And Life, Laughter and Love are, I hope, what we have brought to many of you who have supported our venture and been to the myriad happy and memorable events held here in the last 10 years.

Happy Birthday! Happy decade and, as Alan says, “Long live The Mission Theatre.”

Next Stage Theatre Company presents

Noises Offby Michael Frayn

The Mission Theatre’s resident company Next Stage is delighted to announce a revival of its highly-acclaimed 1999 production of Michael Frayn’s hilarious play Noises Off, timed to celebrate the theatre’s 10th Birthday in January 2015.

Frayn’s classic is a side-splitting take on the highs and lows of life in a repertory touring company. Opening in Weston-Super-Mare, Otstar Productions Ltd are presenting Nothing On, a standard farce. Unfortunately, Dotty Otley, the star of the show, is slightly past her prime and trying to keep track of endless plates of sardines leads to a near nervous breakdown for her, the director and the stage manager.

As tempers flare, backstage passions are also alight with clandestine affairs, jealousies and thwarted ambitions all melting in a crucible of exhaustion and first-night nerves. Things have not improved when the touring production reaches Goole, and by the time the shattered company reach Stockton-on-Tees, it is not only the sardines that are disintegrating.

Noises Off has been hailed as the ‘funniest farce of modern theatre’. Why not come along in January to join in the fun and see The Mission Theatre’s Main Auditorium transformed into the interior of a 16th Century posset-mill for this very special 10th Birthday celebration? TICKETS

For one day only, The Mission Theatre will be transformed into a vintage cinema as we screen the classic 1929 silent horror film Phantom of the Opera. Regarded by many as the first great ‘scary movie’, and certainly the most successful of its kind in the silent era, Phantom of the Opera, directed by Rupert Julian, stars Hollywood greats Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin.

What makes this an unmissable event is the fact that the film will be accompanied by an original musical soundtrack, played live by composer Mark Willets and the Black Country Guitar Quartet. Many of you will have seen and heard Mark here at The Mission Theatre last September when his virtuoso playing delighted audiences during The Jane Austen Festival.

Phantom of the Opera promises to be a unique experience… do not miss it!

Fall from GraceAn original South West Dance Theatre production

Bath University Student Theatre presents

Much Ado About Nothingby William Shakespeare

Grace meets grime in this dance theatre epic - South West Dance Theatre have teamed up with street artists Angus Art and DIFF to create a production that will soothe you, groove you and move you to tears.

To a potent sound track mixing jazz, pop, hip hop, rock and classical, the show spins the tale of dreams cherished and trashed in a seedy urban underworld, where all that glitters is not gold...

The dancing builds on our archetypal mongrel blend mixing ballet, jazz, contemporary, Fosse, Latin, Charleston and street - a classic choreographic cocktail with a fruity kick.

Messina Solutions offers its clients the best products to satisfy their corporate needs. At the height of the recession CEO Leonato turns to his old friend Don Pedro, offering him a partnership within the company in return for help in running the business. Much to the dismay of Beatrice, the current head of human resources, Don Pedro, in a bid to turn the company’s fortunes around, brings with him his own corporate entourage. To her displeasure, Beatrice discovers she is to be reunited with ex-lover and colleague Benedick. It soon becomes apparent that mixing business with pleasure is a tricky affair.

The talented actors from BUST make a welcome return to The Mission Theatre with a contemporary interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays.

The Foreign Blokeby Doc Watson

Two men sit in a public house – or do they? One of them is a foreign bloke – but which one of them is it? Or perhaps neither of them is foreign. And what are they talking about?

Based on Rex Whistler’s enigmatic painting in Bath’s Victoria Art Gallery, Doc Watson, writer, director and performer, and his actor colleague, Peter Smart, have tried to answer these questions in a series of sketches and scenes entitled The Foreign Bloke, exploring the painting’s mysterious characters with humorous and sometimes dark results.

The play is preceded by The Comforts of Bath, a witty and satirical view of 18th century Bath seen through the eyes of the hapless and helpless Blunderhead family. Based on Thomas Rowlandson’s saucy cartoons and Christopher Anstey’s hilarious New Bath Guide.

Dick and Daisy(Dramatized from the book, Alias Richard Lee: Pictures of a Chaplin Actor)by Nanette Ackerman

Enjoy a meal before the show: The Green Room is open from 6pm with a full range of delicious vegetarian dishes and desserts. Please call 01225 428600 in advance to book your table.

When young Annie finds an old scrapbook and secret memoirs belonging to her Grandmother, Marguerite, she can scarcely imagine the colourful story hidden within...

As aged Marguerite (Daisy) writes and reads her memoirs, we learn that she was a gentleman’s daughter who married the young actor, Dick, against her family’s wishes in 1906. Following the marriage, Daisy was unprepared for the years of drama that would follow when Dick, after an incident with a gun, fled the country, only to appear later in early Chaplin films. Dick’s unmasking by his grown-up son in San Francisco during the Roaring Twenties, adds a colourful and dramatic twist to the story.

‘Extremely well written by someone who has an excellent knowledge of Edwardian manners.’ (Artistic Director, Barons Court)

‘Lines worthy of Oscar Wilde’ (Redcliffe Press)

Next Stage Theatre Company presents

The Weirby Conor McPhersonIn a remote Irish pub, four local men gather for an evening of drinking. But tonight there is a newcomer, a young Dublin woman. The men seek to entertain and impress the young woman with ghost stories. But she caps all their tales with one of her own, reminding us that truth can be far more distressing than fiction.

All five of McPherson’s engaging characters are leading ‘ordinary’ lives, but each is coping with a different tragedy which, in the course of an evening of story-telling, comes bubbling to the surface, turbulently, like water going over a weir.

Combining humour and suspense with masterful craftsmanship, The Weir delights and confounds audiences. The play was widely praised on its debut in 1997 and won The Evening Standard, Olivier and Critics Circle awards. Since then it has gone on to achieve success all over the world and was voted one of the 100 most significant plays of the 20th Century in a poll conducted by the Royal National Theatre.

The Weir features an experienced Next Stage cast and the intimate staging lends itself perfectly to the claustrophobic interior of Brendan’s bar. This promises to be a night in the pub unlike any other!
