GOLD DisCOvErED!

The discovery of gold in the region in 1851 turned the quiet settlement of Bathurst into a boomtown. Miners flocked to purchase supplies or to sell their find. At its peak the village of Hill End sported 52 pubs and the main street of Sofala was 6km long.

thE WiraDJuri

Prior to white settlement the Wiradjuri tribe had over 40,000 years association with the land and developed a language and a culture closely linked to it. The first meetings between the early settlers and the indigenous population were amicable but the situation changed and minor skirmishes took place escalating into major attacks by both sides. Peace was regained but at a high cost to the native population.

thE First rOaD

A year after Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson crossed the Blue Mountains in 1813, Government Surveyor George Evans discovered the Bathurst Plains. In 1815 William Cox completed construction of a road from Emu Plains to Bathurst - a remarkable achievement. As the Sydney settlement verged on starvation Bathurst became the colony’s breadbowl and so began our agricultural history.

MiLLiONs OF YEars

ago, dinosaurs roamed the earth and diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds and other gems were forming. Thanks to the generous donation of Professor Warren Somerville, Bathurst is home to the world renowned Australian Fossil & Mineral Museum, a stunningly beautiful building that houses a complete T.rex skeleton and Australia’s largest collection of fossils in amber among many other treasures.

thE raiLWaY arrivEs

The Great Western Railway Line opened to Bathurst in April 1876 contributing to the expansion of agriculture in the region, particularly wheat growing.Mills sprang up in the southern part of town and the area developed a unique character and identity becoming known as Milltown. It had its own shops, pubs, police station, school and churches. Bathurst Railway Station was built in 1876 and the nearby Station Master’s residence in 1880.

thE COurthOusE

Bathurst Courthouse is one of the most significant public buildings in country NSW. It was designed by colonial architect James Barnett and opened in 1880. Rumours that the original plans were meant for Bathurst in Africa were greatly exaggerated as were those that the iron fence was designed to stop rampaging elephants. Makes for a good story though!

FEDEratiON CENtraL

Bathurst played an important role in the Federation of Australia. Should Australia become one country or remain six separate British colonies? In 1896 that was the question that faced 220 delegates from all over Australia as they converged on Bathurst for the People’s Federal Convention, a week long meeting to discuss the draft constitution.

Bathurst CariLLON

Built with funds raised by local citizens, the Carillon commemorates the lives of people from the region who died in World War I. Building commenced in 1927 and it was completed in time for Armistice Day in 1933.The Carillon represents those who have lost their lives in all wars and conflicts since. There are 35 bells in the tower ranging in weight from 8kgs to 1,575kgs!

Bathurst BECOMEs thE hEaDquartErs FOr COBB & CO

In 1862 Bathurst became the main headquarters for Cobb & Co which greatly improved transport to the region. By 1870 the network expanded to cover vast areas of the state as far as Bourke. An original coach has been fully restored and is on display at BVIC. There are a number of old buildings in the area that were originally Cobb & Co stops.

Many of Australia’s early bushrangers were escaped convicts. Back in 1830, the Ribbon Gang bushrangers numbered about 130 and used Abercrombie Caves as a safe place to hide. This was long before the more well known bushranger Ben Hall was active in the region. Ben Hall’s gang raided Bathurst in October 1863, shots were fired and the gang made off on stolen racehorses which (true to their word) were returned some days later.

As early as 1911 motorcycle racing was held on the roads around Bathurst but it wasn’t until 1938 that the circuit, as we know it today, was officially opened. In 1973 the first 1000km race, the Hardie-Ferodo 1000 took place. Subsequent events have taken the name of the major sponsor but to many the race is simply the Bathurst 1000. Even if you’re not into racing, take a lap around the Mount for the best view of Bathurst.

Army infantry divisions were trained at the Bathurst Army Camp which was built in 1940 on the outskirts of Bathurst.Eight years later the camp became one of the country’s major migrant centres housing many of Europe’s displaced population. It is believed that during the four years it operated, the camp housed a total of 80,000 people which helps explains why Bathurst has quite a diverse population now.

She sank in Sydney in 1950. In 2006 a new HMAS Bathurst, a patrol boat, was officially commissioned in Darwin. The HMAS Bathurst crest design includes a prospector’s arm, hand and pick rising out of a gold laced river.

The Bathurst-Orange Development Corporation was established in 1974 to encourage business and economic development opportunities in the region. Economically it was a major turning point for Bathurst with the Central Mapping Authority (now the Department of Lands) and Masterfoods establishing large operations here.

BEN ChiFLEY PM

Ben Chifley became a railway worker at the age of 15 and went on to become Australia’s 16th Prime Minister, leading the country from 1945-1949. He and his wife Elizabeth lived in a humble home in Busby Street Bathurst, not far from the railway. Chifley Home is open to the public and is a remarkable time capsule of the era. Chifley’s grave is located in the Roman Catholic section of the Bathurst Cemetery.

hiLL END artists

In 1947 Donald Friend and Russell Drysdale went for a drive to escape the Sydney art scene and ended up at Hill End, the once prosperous gold-rush town. Friend was captivated by the landscape and bought a little cottage where he lived for a number of years. Many of Australia’s best known artists visited and followed his lead including Margaret Olley, Jean Bellette, Jeffrey Smart, Brett Whiteley, John Olsen and Tim Storrier.

WiNE & FOOD

Bathurst is gaining a reputation as a cool climate wine growing region where quality whites and reds are being produced. Each October the region’s vignerons host the National Cool Climate Wine Show which is recognised as one of the premier wine shows for these types of wines. Apart from wine Bathurst is home to a boutique distillery that produces a range of spirits from gin and vodka to schnapps. For the foodies fresh local produce is a feature on many menus and can be purchased at the monthly Farmers’ Markets held each 4th Saturday.

thEatrE iN Bathurst

Bathurst is fortunate to have one of the finest regional performing arts centres in the country. The Memorial Entertainment Centre was opened in 1999 after extensions and renovations were carried out to the 30 year old City Hall. The Centre now hosts amateur and professional performances throughout the year as well as providing a venue for groups like Cabaret Kite and the Catapult Festival to develop local talent. Kelso High School’s Cirkus Surreal continues to showcase the circus skills and physical theatre of their students.

sistEr CitY

Bathurst’s sister city relationship with Ohkuma in Japan began in 1991 providing an opportunity for residents from both communities to learn about the other’s culture. Visits were exchanged regularly and Bathurst has many tangible reminders of this experience. Tragically the 2011 earthquake that rocked Japan caused severe damage to the Fukushima Nuclear Power plant near Ohkuma. The residents were relocated and it may be at least 20 years before they can return.

Bathurst has had a strong focus on education ever since the Bathurst Experiment Farm, offering vocational agricultural education, was established in 1895. In 1989 Bathurst became the headquarters of Charles Sturt University. We also have a Western Institute of TAFE campus and many high quality schools. Education is a major industry in Bathurst.

WatEr suPPLY

The wall at Chifley Dam was raised in 2001 by five metres, in effect doubling its capacity from 16.6ML to 30.8ML and giving Bathurst a sustainable water supply until at least the end of the 21st century. It has also created a fabulous recreational zone 17kms south of the city that is perfect for fishing, sailing and water skiing. Stay and play at the Chifley Dam Cabins.

BiCENtENNiaL 2015

Australia’s oldest inland settlement celebrates 200 years since the town was first declared. No doubt it will be a big year of festivities and events so watch this space! Australia’s Oldest Inland Settlement

As you can see from the timeline we have lived through the adrenalin and high times of the gold rush. We have played host to

some of Australia’s best known artists. We have watched with pride as Ben Chifley, a simple railway worker, became Prime Minister of

Australia. We have built one of the most exciting motor racing circuits in the world.

Our city and our villages are living reminders of this rich and colourful history and it is part of the great charm of Bathurst that you can enjoy all the benefits of a modern city but then turn

a corner and be surrounded by some of the most beautiful buildings in the country.

A great way to explore the many beautiful historic buildings and interesting sites that reflect the rich history of Bathurst is to take a Bathurst Heritage tour.

Get started at the Visitor Information Centre where two of the older methods of transport from the early days are on display – a fully restored Cobb & Co Coach and a 1909 Brush Car.

Wander along the banks of the Macquarie River and discover the site where Bathurst was proclaimed a townsite in 1815 at the Foundation Cairn. A great place to discover family roots is on our Heritage Wall in the Bicentennial River Park. There you’ll find plaques that remember early settlers and people who have contributed to the establishment of the town and region.

The centre of Bathurst has some superb heritage listed architecture. The Courthouse is a stunning reminder of how impressive government buildings and workmanship were in the late 1800s. In its eastern wing you’ll find the Bathurst District Historical Museum and directly opposite in Kings Parade you’ll see the War Memorial Carillon, Boer War Memorial and Evans Memorial.

Make sure you call in to BVIC on the way into town to collect a copy of any one of the many tour sheets we have on hand to help you plan your visit. These include self guided walking and driving tours.

A walk through Machattie Park is like taking a step back to the days of band performances in the Rotunda, meeting friends for a picnic on the lawns and feeding the

ducks. While today the park is full of fountains, gates and other structures that have been erected in memory of past citizens, you might be surprised to learn that it was once the site of the old Bathurst Gaol where public floggings and hangings took place. There are a number of sites in Bathurst that celebrate Bathurst’s favourite son and one of Australia’s most respected prime ministers, Ben Chifley. The home that he shared with his wife Elizabeth is a perfect time capsule of life in the 1940s.

A Milltown walking tour of the streets around the Railway Station where Chifley began his career on the railways is an education in itself. See how a community emerged to cater for the needs of those who lived in the area.

Don’t forget that Bathurst has fabulous museums like the Australian Fossil & Mineral Museum where T. rex stands supreme and the National Motor Racing Museum where motor racing history takes the front seat.

In the early 1800s if you wanted to be an explorer Bathurst was apparently the place to be. See the plaque near the bowling club that commemorates the amazing explorers who used Bathurst as a base...George Evans, John Oxley, Allan Cunningham, Charles Sturt and Sir Thomas Mitchell.

For Some It’s a RushFor Others It’s a Pilgrimage

Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit is one of the most exciting race tracks in

the world and a visit to Bathurst would be incomplete without doing a lap – even if it’s

just to take in the beautiful view.

The history of motor racing in Bathurst goes back to 1911 with the Old Vale Circuit and

whether it’s bikes or cars that you’re interested in, you should set aside some time to visit the National Motor Racing Museum at the base

of the Mount.

Bring your camera, imagine for a moment it’s you sitting in pole position on the starting

grid, but please take care on the circuit – it’s a public road and speed limits apply.

For motor racing enthusiasts just the word ‘Bathurst’ can send pulses into overdrive.

The city has a history of racing that goes back to the gravel roads of 1911 when motor cycles sped around the district through Sunny Corner, Limekilns and Palmers Oakey.

Originally constructed as a scenic drive in the 1930s it was officially opened in 1938 when the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix took place before a crowd of over 20,000 spectators. Two days later cars raced for the first time reaching average speeds of 60 miles an hour – very different to those of our time.

In 1963 endurance racing began on Mount Panorama when the Armstrong 500 was transferred from Phillip Island. When the metric system was introduced the distance changed from 500 miles to 1000 kilometres. Each year the event is named for the major sponsor but no matter what it’s called the Bathurst 1000 is widely known around Australia and overseas. The Mount itself attracts thousands of visitors annually who simply want to drive around the circuit.

Last stop should be the Victors’ Walk in front of the Civic Centre in Russell Street, where the winners of all the endurance races since 1963 are recorded on brass plaques.
