GIppSLAnD LAkES Stretching out over 400 square km is the Southern Hemispheres’ largest and most beautiful network of inland waterways, the Gippsland Lakes. Boating, sailing and general enjoyment for all makes this the ultimate paradise playground. Smaller hamlets of Eagle Point, Wattle Point, Nungurner dotted around the lakes are all worth visiting.

METUNG 312kms east of Melbourne Picture a perfect waterside village in your mind, with boats bobbing up and down in the azure blue water taut fishing lines being reeled in with fish that dance in the afternoon sun and people relaxing and having fun. This perfect and peaceful scene epitomises Metung, a tranquil waterfront village set on the Gippsland Lakes. The village sits on Bancroft Bay, sheltered from the open waters of the lakes on one side, but with far expanses of Lake on the other. From the time of the indigenous Gunai people to now, most have visited or made their home here because of the water and the seclusion. Today nothing has changed. Tourists love the laid back coastal charm of this small village and stay in a choice of stylish up market accommodation right on the water through to budget offerings. You can even hire a boat or yacht here and live on the water for a few days. Local artisans have made nearby Nungurner their home also, injecting a cultural and artistic flair into the lifestyle. Stay within this tranquil setting and your cares and worries just float away.

LAKES ENTRANCE 319kms east of Melbourne Most of Victoria’s population can remember a holiday or stop over in Lakes Entrance in their life; it is one of those traditional Victorian coastal holiday resorts. That first glimpse of the ocean at Kalimna Lookout on

the peak of the hill and the winding road down into the waterside locale is stunning. With a rich diversity on offer, Lakes Entrance is a premier holiday spot. The ocean is a walk away over the historic footbridge leading you to the glorious 90 Mile Beach. Stretching out like a snake, this famous coastline seems to disappear into the wonderful, salty sea spray in the distance. The fishing industry love Lakes Entrance. Not only is it home to a large commercial fleet, but it is a haven for the weekend or holiday fishing enthusiast also. At the end of the day if you did not hook the big one, just visit the Fishing Co-operative to choose which fish you should have caught and buy it instead! The lakes span out in two directions from the entrance. North Arm is perfect to explore with a hire boat or jump on board one of the many boat tours. Just out of town, Lake Tyers is a great place to chill out. The beach is fun to explore, with the lake occasionally breaking through to the sea. Nowa Nowa offers alternative lake experiences, with natural habitats and pristine waters to explore and a small group of local artists displaying their works. Lakes Entrance has developed an extensive range of accommodation alternatives over the last few years, so every style is available. You will also find one of the 3 regional accredited Visitor Information Centres located in Lakes Entrance.

PAYNESVILLE 300kms east of Melbourne Surrounded by the Gippsland Lakes, the water theme is continued through the village itself, with a series of canals that replicate roads. Boats, boats and more boats is certainly what strikes most tourists when they visit. The climate and the boating culture here have likened Paynesville to the Rivera. Quietly sophisticated but also family friendly, staying is an experience. With most accommodation from B&B to motel, apartments to self-contained houses and units located on the water, most of these also have private jetty berths, so all ages can experience life on the water. Situated in the middle of the Lakes, Paynesville makes a great base to explore from. With a terrific shopping & dining culture, you do not have to travel far to get your supplies. Just 2 minutes off the shoreline is Raymond Island, a natural lake island, inhabited by a small population of people and Koalas. The island can be reached by a car ferry that regularly departs every 15 minutes on either side. Take your car over and drive down many roads or bush tracks to find Koalas in their natural habitat. It is one of the few places in Australia where you will truly experience an up close and personal encounter with this furry native. Nearby at Eagle Point, the Mitchell River Silt Jetties are a noted geographical highlight.

BAIRNSDALE 285kms east of Melbourne Not only the gateway to everything our region has to offer, but a thriving provincial town. With a backdrop of the High Country and situated at the start of the Great Alpine Road, it is the perfect spot for a lunch in one of the many cafes, restaurants or hotels or to picnic by the Mitchell River. Using the town as a base to explore the region, you will also enjoy country hospitality. Shop in a variety of local businesses within Bairnsdale and meet friendly shopkeepers and locals, who are all happy to provide advice about this beautiful region.

With a cattle and farming history and gold found in the outlying areas in the 1850’s, the town thrived as a diversity of cultures and nationalities passed through. Even now, as a major commercial hub for the region, wonderful insights into centuries past can still be glimpsed via heritage walks including historical highlights like the Rotunda, St. Mary’s Church and the Courthouse, noted for its late 19th century architecture.

The Mitchell River, where steamers from the Lakes once traded, meanders through Bairnsdale flowing down from the High Country, traversing lush farming & vegetable growing flats at Lindenow and then Wy Yung.

A Visitor Information Centre for the region is based here, with material available on all the points of interest for the East Gippsland region, including the exciting Rail Trail that begins in Bairnsdale or the Macleod Morass Boardwalk, which winds through an eco-habitat steeped with local bird and wildlife. An excellent range of accommodation choices & great food and wine will delight you.

A day trip or overnight stay in Dargo from Bairnsdale makes an interesting detour. Dargo is blessed with a stand of 100 year old walnut trees, supplying Victoria with 10% of its walnuts. The township is surrounded by National Parks, historical sites and spectacular scenery. A small selection of quality accommodation choices is available.

BRUTHEN 310kms east of Melbourne 25kms north of Bairnsdale If the walls could talk, Bruthen would have a lot to say. Once an overnight rest spot on the Great Alpine Road for weary fortune hunters headed for the gold diggings, it still represents a great spot to stop and break a journey. Local shops and eateries offer an alternative flavour and the local market on the second Saturday each month should not be missed.

The Tambo River winding through this vast valley makes a picturesque setting, a photographers’ paradise. Walks and the Rail Trail cut through the quaint village, a favourite for both locals and tourists.

OMEO 405kms east of Melbourne 120kms north of Bairnsdale Sitting on top of the world, the view is spectacular from Omeo. The Great Alpine Road that leads you here from Bairnsdale, follows the Tambo River valley, wild and beautiful as it twists and turns. Omeo seems a lifetime away from the coast and lakes which you have left below, but typifies the high plains and bush landscape of the Victorian Alps. The activities available are numerous. Fish for trout, snow ski, 4WD, cycle, ride horses, canoe, white water raft, play tennis or golf; enjoy this wonderful landscape in every season. Omeo is also steeped in history. The gold rush is still evident with sites like the Oriental Claims, Log Gaol and even the old Court House. The surrounding rivers and mountains are great panoramic spots for a picnic, but a leisurely stopover for all travelers is a must, with unique accommodation choices in Omeo on offer. High country hospitality will greet you in Omeo and you will remember it forever.

Dinner Plain is only a short drive from Omeo. Experience special winter lodgings and food, but also in the warmer months be treated to wildflowers in bloom whilst hiking or walking the many highland tracks.

SnOwy RIVER COUnTRy The legend of the Snowy River is renowned. Here you can experience the Snowy flowing down into the sea. Majestic stands of remnant and whole coastal rainforests surround the area, bringing new meaning to the word green.

BUCHAN 360kms east of Melbourne What lies beneath is spectacular and awe inspiring, the Buchan Caves are renowned throughout Australia. This limestone-rich area which produced the main caves has also made the surrounding countryside a wild cavers’ paradise, with tours available. Nestled in the valley, vast wilderness areas neighboring the village are now preserved and protected as the Alpine & Snowy River National Parks. Buchan is the perfect base for real Far East Gippsland touring. An ideal day trip is McKillops Bridge, spanning 250m over the Snowy River or Little River Gorge - the deepest gorge in Victoria, plus other spectacular waterfall sites. Enjoy picnics, walking, 4WD tracks and camp spots.

MARLO 390kms east of Melbourne Here the Snowy meets the sea and is also the starting point to a wonderful coastal touring route. Marlo itself is a sleepy hamlet which comes alive as fishing boats are launched into the big river; pelicans perform for morsels of fish discarded by contented fishers and tourists take in the spectacular scenery. The town hotel has historic

origins and a magnificent location. Continue on the coastal road that hugs the ocean through Cape Conran Coastal Park and be rewarded. Rugged beaches, boardwalks and camp grounds are available so you can experience this unique coastline up close. Swimming, boating and fishing are allowed in certain areas, but the lure of the wild is what brings most to this incredible place.

ORBOST 375kms east of Melbourne History of riverboats and steamers, farmers, gold and timber mills still haunt the township of Orbost. This rich history has built a friendly and picturesque community, nestled on the banks of the Snowy River. Well kept parks and amenities invite you to break your journey and sample some country hospitality. In the town centre a relic of the past is the Slab Hut which revisits tales of timber and transport from days gone by. With such beautiful river flats surrounding the area, it is little wonder that grazing and agriculture are prevalent; truly an interesting stop for the traveller. Surrounded by the coastal rainforests and hinterlands, Orbost is also the gateway to the high plateaus and old growth forests of the Errinundra Plateau. The local community is especially attuned to the tourist’s needs and the many shops, dining, hotel and accommodation choices in the town reflect this. Home of the annual Australian Wood Design Awards within the state of the art Exhibition Centre, it is worth visiting for other exhibitions. Country towns like this are gems to be explored and treasured.

JOHNSONVILLE 303kms east of Melbourne The hamlet on the highway with a big heart. The Tambo River is accessible just off the highway, where a double boat ramp and floating pontoon make fishing and boating a pleasure. After all they are the most popular pastime. Life revolves around the water, but Johnsonville is also a great starting point for the Twin Rivers Food and Wine Trail, with a fruit farm of excellent repute located here.

NICHOLSON 295kms east of Melbourne With the majestic Nicholson River flowing through it, many refer to Nicholson as a fishing paradise. Delight in the beautiful vista of boats moored in the river with the magnificent old railway bridge in the background. Photographers are especially enamoured here. The

bridge has another purpose today as part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail, a spectacular way to view the river and the town on a journey to Bruthen, Nowa Nowa or beyond. Find great spots for a picnic by the river, or start the Food Trail here.

SWAN REACH 303kms east of Melbourne Here in Swan Reach the Tambo River takes pride of place in the centre of town. The river and the bridge make this a particularly picturesque spot. Giant gums line the river, making it the perfect location for a picnic, fishing break or perhaps just a snooze in the sun. Bream is the fish of the day, and many try their hardest to catch this elusive fish. All tourists who stop off here will be delighted with the friendliness of the people and the great places to stay.

TwIn RIVERS Rivers are the source of life and these two are no exception. The Nicholson River and the Tambo River start a long journey in the High Country. Flowing down into the Gippsland Lakes, both rivers are the central point to these Villages Beyond the Lakes, nurturing the communities who focus on fishing pursuits, tourism and hospitality. Accommodation choices in and around these small townships cater for all visitors.

Savour regional specialties, local produce and delight in the flavours of East Gippsland.

Regionally diverse, comprising mountains, rivers, lakes, pristine sandy beaches, rocky headlands and lush undulating pastures dotted with cattle or market gardens; no wonder the tastes that you will encounter here are of (g)astronomic proportions.

Grape picking (EGS)

THE BEST TABLE IN THE HOUSE MIGHT NOT BE WHAT YOU EXPECTImagine a freshly cooked piece of ‘just caught’ flathead and tasty, thick cut chips being enjoyed on a secluded beach - just you, the sand dunes and an ocean that goes on forever. Or what about ‘just picked’ fruit or berries with a dollop of cream, enjoyed roadside with a vista of the Gippsland Lakes stretching in front of you? This is the best fast food around; available direct from the producer to you.

If you have time, be spoilt for choice at a restaurant or café in the region. And what choices there are! Perhaps breakfast right on the water in Paynesville, whilst you are watched by pods of dolphins or hungry sailors vying for positions on surrounding jetties. Lunch in the beautiful hamlet of Bruthen at any of the quaint cafes or

gather some bakery goodies and head up into the hills for a riverside picnic.

Settle back in the evening for a seafood experience on board floating pontoon restaurants in Lakes Entrance or dine in casual elegance in Metung by the water or at the golf course surrounded by countryside vistas.

Bairnsdale offers an incredible selection of tastes, with chefs drawing inspiration from a multitude of homeland traditions and relaxed country styles.

EAST GIPPSLAND FOOD HAS HEART AND SOULIt is easy to lose yourself in a gourmet induced whirl, as you tour along back roads and find producers tucked away in obscure country lanes or down salty sand tracks. Watch out for blackboards brandishing today’s harvest. From red, flavoursome tomatoes to giant orange pumpkins that remind you of last nights sunset or wild local honey coupled with the best walnuts you’ll ever taste. Experience meeting a grower; sometimes just experience their trust as you to leave the money in a box at a roadside produce stall. This is what regional food is all about. The Twin Rivers Farm Trail is a great place to start and not only showcases delicious food and wine, but also the picturesque and idyllic scenery that lies in the hinterland of the lakes.

It may be something to do with the natural beauty, energy and spirit of the region - along with a great climate - but East Gippsland is increasingly developing its own menu of flavours - delicious and fresh.

Behind the wonderful backdrop of picturesque scenery there are culinary gems emerging. A range of growers and producers are building on their enthusiasm for local produce and are developing productive links with local restaurants, cafes and each other. This is good news for the visitor to our region, who can now sample the best of our bountiful produce through local eateries. The temperate climate ensures that olives, grapes, apples and even asparagus are nurtured superbly to produce perfection. Transforming the grapes for instance into award winning wines is what a handful of small wine producers strive for and are proud of, but seeing you enjoying these wines is what they live for.

BERRY SWEET Ripe, juicy berries require nothing more than a shower of sugar and a dollop of thick cream, but some just prefer them natural. Every berry season in East Gippsland is a good one, with some of the best produce in the country being grown. Check out the food trails for the best farms to visit. Blueberries, raspberries strawberries and even the elusive boysenberry, succulent, fragrant and delicious summer harvests to savour.

UPPER CRUST From Omeo along the Great Alpine Road and down into the hinterland and coast areas of East Gippsland, you will find small bakeries with their own specialties. Not only wonderful bread hot out of the wood fire or bakery oven, ready to make the perfect holiday sandwich, but traditional pies and delectable sweet treats should be sampled and relished. Oh, and don’t forget a delicious Devonshire tea!

THE GOOD CATCH The taste of fish only hours out of the water is memorable. Over eighty varieties of seafood caught from the south eastern seaboard, lakes and rivers, are plentiful and of superb quality. Regional restaurants delight in preparing and serving the freshest they can find and with the respect they deserve. These include two local fish varieties. Duck Fish and Flathead will be found on many menus, so take the opportunity to sample them. Lake prawns are a delicacy when in season and each year are available direct from local trawlers, village fish & chip shops or why not try your hand catching them yourself. Up in the High Country, you will experience rainbow trout at its finest. There is always a cosy country hotel that will have it on the menu, especially at the aptly named Anglers Rest on the Mitta Mitta, or other spots on the Great Alpine Road.

TO MARKET TO MARKET Showcasing the regions best local growers and producers, a network of Farmers Markets and local town markets are popular spots to sample and buy local food. From organic asparagus grown on salty, fertile river flats to delectable pickles, chutneys and jams all made from local produce, your taste buds will be working overtime. Selling meat, fish, fruit and vegetables that glisten in the sun, the memories of yesteryear markets flood back. The colour and chaos is a delight. Pilgrimages to these markets are justified, every Saturday morning in different locations each week in a seasonal rotation. Take a page out of the locals’ book and come early.

SWEET MEAT Eating some of the best beef and lamb you will ever taste is a memory you will take home from East Gippsland. Restaurants and eateries are now adding the ‘home grown’ meats to menus, with chefs appreciating the quality. It is not just restaurants that are privy to these delectable cuts; butchers are also proudly selling these meats, enabling many holidaymakers to purchase and cook for themselves, turning the traditional holiday BBQ into a gourmet feast. Local business success, Patties Pies, uses meats sourced locally in their production of pies not only for Victorian, but Australian and export markets.

THE GOOD OIL Up in the High Country they are growing them, down in the valley they are too. Once the best olives and oil were only found in Mediterranean climes, but East Gippsland has stepped up to the plate. Local olive oils and olives are now available in all good cafes ‘cum’ provenders’, so you can take the produce of the region home with you. Local chefs are keen to promote these oils, rich with flavours that are unique to our growing conditions

A VINE IDEA Whilst olives may be recent arrivals on the land, grapevines, with their beautiful green, red and ruby coloured jewels, have been a part of the landscape for many years here. Smaller, more intimate wineries exist in East Gippsland, so the chance to really meet the winemaker and relate to the grape is possible. Some cellar doors need a phone call before you arrive. Imagine walking down russet hued corridors of leaves, just you the winemaker and a glass of the last vintage, discussing the intricacies and joys of their daily life. Local bottle shops and restaurants are in

agreement that East Gippsland is a hidden secret when it comes to wine, so they are zealous in their own arenas to promote it. So don’t wait till it’s a secret no more, sample and enjoy now. Some varietals that are much awarded in our region are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and are readily available. Sparkling varieties and even berry wines in the High Country are specialties too. Food and Wine trails include many wineries, most are sign posted.

LIFE’S A PEACH With the gold rush being the catalyst for population growth in the region, the love of planting fruit trees for sustenance started here. Throughout the region every temperate and cold climate fruit you could imagine grows with relative ease and many orchards open their doors to sell direct. So, you not only get delicious, ripe peaches, nectarines or apples from the grower, but also delight in the picture postcard surroundings. Most farms are on the Food and Wine Trail, but are also well signed throughout the region.

SAY CHEESE Lush green pastures and a great climate factor in the production of cheese in Gippsland. These creamy cheeses are now unequalled in some quarters and feature as top billing on gourmet foodie lists. Australian and international award winning cheeses come from wonderful dairy herds who dine on tasty Gippsland grass. But it is not only the cows that have it so good. We are also home to fresh and organic Goats Cheese with the emergence of a new maker in East Gippsland. Look out for these cheeses in local provenders, gourmet shops and at the regular Farmers Markets in the region.

journeys in paradise

Barely 3 hours from Melbourne the journey begins to unfold. So far you have toured through rolling hills, small villages and provincial towns on excellent major highways, to arrive in the eastern corner of Victoria; what lies ahead for you is a holiday in paradise.

Beautifully unassuming, yet complex in the same breath, East Gippsland will sate the wanderlust in any traveller. Because there is so much to see and do on such a grand scale, every journey you take within this region is an opportunity to experience new delights.

Whether you get here touring by car, boat, motorbike, rail, bike or coach take the time to divert off the highway along the way.

MOTORInG AnD TOURInGGREAT ALPINE ROADThe height of excitement. This has been called one of the greatest touring experiences in Australia and what better way to see it than at the beginning. If you start in Bairnsdale it is an easy drive to Omeo, Dinner Plain or even Mt Hotham in a day and back, with opportunity to visit many points of interest on the way. Wherever you are based, there is always a round trip able to be planned.

Touring by car on this road will avail you of magnificent scenery, changing on every corner of the road. From the trickle of mountain streams to surging river rapids, towering gums to cool green fern glades, this road never disappoints. Stay over and enjoy the High Country.

MELBOURNE TO SYDNEY - SYDNEY TO MELBOURNEThe Princes Highway runs the length of the East Gippsland region on its journey around the coastline of Australia. With the indifference that comes with familiarity, many tourists zoom along without seeing much more than the bumper bar on the car in front of them. One travel writer once wrote “embrace the detours” and if you do you will be rewarded. Turn off the major road and embark on an exploration of salty lake & beach side hot spots, hinterland havens or High Country escapes, perfect for urban refugees.

The Sydney to Melbourne coastal drive allows you to deviate along the way within the region and take as much or as little time to explore. It might just be a food experience or maybe an adventure; these are the elements of the journey you will decide.

Your trip to or from Sydney will be all the more enjoyable & relaxing.

DAY TOURINGWhy not do a bit of day touring? Suggested tours are just snapshots of many trips that can be extended; but for travellers on limited time these ideas are perfect.

Begin in the back streets of Bairnsdale with heritage highlights and Mitchell River beauty. Head to Paynesville, on a road that snakes its way in tandem with the Mitchell River. Visit the Silt Jetties on the way and arrive at this village with Lakes King and Victoria, bookends on either side of this peninsula and Raymond Island, the jewel at the end of the road. Picnic and enjoy the water, koalas and tranquility.

A picturesque drive through the hinterland discovering bygone towns will unveil ghostly reminders of the gold rush on the roads through to Bruthen and Omeo or deviate to Buchan with the magnificent Caves to view.

Twin Rivers region has cellar doors and produce so bountiful you might need an extra bag or two to carry it home, or throw in a line and catch your own bounty. Don’t miss Metung’s idyllic setting on Bancroft Bay and the exploration of roads around it, delivering artists, galleries and historical Nyerimilang showcasing heritage gardens and cultural exhibitions, a perfect spot for a picnic.

Back along the main highway into Lakes Entrance, view the ocean and lakes unfolding before your eyes, and then drive down into the seaside town.

Another touring day will ensure you don’t miss the scenic drives into coastal rainforests or isolated, beautiful beaches and river locations.

Start in Orbost exploring this beautiful town and picking up some goodies for the trip. Taking the scenic Snowy River road to Marlo will lead you to this iconic river’s mouth, out into Bass Strait. The road then follows the coast along to Cape Conran. Stop off at many spots here and enjoy a beach side picnic, or hike to interesting spots like Cabbage Tree Creek Flora Reserve. Marvel at the remnant coastal rainforests back on the main highway, like the Lind National Park with ferns as large as trees, green and lush. Roadside stops for honey, free range eggs, fruit and vegetables might slow you down a bit, but will be worth it. Along this part of the road you must turn off to experience amazing sights and meet some locals. Bemm River with its beautiful setting and fishing culture, Tamboon and Thurra River accessed from Cann River, or visit incredible areas like Point Hicks Lighthouse or Wingan Inlet.

If you continue on you will reach Mallacoota. Here you can discover pristine lakes, bush and ocean beaches, one day is not enough. Stay over in Gipsy Point, with its beautiful and peaceful location you will feel like the rest of the world has disappeared, or finish your tour in Mallacoota, with a huge range of accommodation options.

One thing is for sure, your travels through East Gippsland will uncover many different journeys.

wD HEAVEnFor the lovers of wild country and bumpy tracks, our region will not disappoint. With so much vast area to explore, the 4WD enthusiast has a multitude of choices with roads through national parks, logging country and bush areas all within reach. Some trails are only accessible in the drier months and it is always wise to check with local authorities before venturing out. National Parks and Local Visitor Information Centres can always assist. BOATInGA journey on water in East Gippsland can mean hiring a yacht or cruiser and embarking on a waterlogged dreamscape. Or why not BYO boat and explore the incredible expanse of waterways from one end of the region to the other. The Gippsland Lakes are an enormous network of peaceful lakes and quiet rivers and canals, whilst the expansive Mallacoota lakes system offer some of the most tranquil and isolated water you will ever experience. Tidal movements are minimal, so safe and enjoyable cruising is likely.

With locals avid boaties also, you will always be able to get some friendly advice on the best place to visit or direction to one of the many fuel or pump out stations on the lakes.

BEARFOOT ON A BAREBOATThe freedom of sailing your own yacht on the Gippsland Lakes or Rivers is a lifetime high. Cruise the water at your own pace, enjoying a new destination every few hours and discover this incredible, vast paradise. Metung and Paynesville offer the most comprehensive range of hire boats, providing a safe boating haven for family holidays. Sailing needs some experience, cruising does not, but neither require a boating license. The 90 Mile Beach, The Lakes National Park and Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park are only accessible by water

as are many locations around the Mallacoota Lakes, which form part of the Croajingolong National Park right to the border of NSW. You are predestined to view pristine and spectacular sights and spot wildlife at play.

GUIDED JOURNEYSOf course if you want to be guided around the lakes, why not let one of the many boating tour operators in the area take charge for you.

From every lake and river location in the region there are suitably qualified local operators waiting to show you their stretch of water.

When you take a tour, a new world will open up to you. With in depth local knowledge and skill, experience the wonders of Lake Tyers on an electric powered boat cruising through still, tranquil waters and getting up close with local bird life. Or perhaps out on the Gippsland Lakes from Paynesville, Metung, Lakes Entrance to Mallacoota sail around on converted fishing boats or historic ketches with pelicans ever watchful and dolphins just a few feet below the bow. Larger, more modern motorised craft seating from 20 to 100 passengers can take you on fast journeys.

Slow and steady, fast and furious; the water is a fundamental part of the region, and your journey is not complete without experiencing it.

On yOUR BIkEThe opportunity to explore the region by bike is one that is attracting more attention. And when we say bike, we mean kinds, motor and non-motor.

Avid cyclists are flocking to the region with the advent of the Rail Trail, which starts in Bairnsdale and continues through small villages and gorgeous countryside to Orbost. Plans for the trail to go further continue, but presently it represents approximately 100kms of cycling pleasure. Whether it is a couple of relaxing hours or perhaps a long weekend of cycling, enjoying the true delights of the East Gippsland region. You will discover local flora and fauna, forest and farmland on your journey. The trail is not just for cycling, it can be enjoyed by walkers also.

However, some want to experience the ride a little faster, and motor cycle fanatics love what the region has to offer. From the great twists and turns of the Great Alpine Road, to the cool coastal drives, there is a great road trip ahead for any motor cycle enthusiast who visits East Gippsland. With the wind in your face and fantastic scenery around, plus great places to stop off and enjoy a drink or meal at every turn, what better place to be on two wheels.

jOURnEyS OF THE ART AnD SOULTake a journey to view what the artist sees and is inspired from in East Gippsland.

Or... why not experience one of the many festivals that take place throughout the year.

ART FOR ARTS SAKEAttracted by the natural beauty and inspirational qualities of the region, East Gippsland has become somewhat of an arts and cultural enclave.

For the visitor this has indeed been a bonus, as looking for that individual or unusual piece has been made easier with local galleries showcasing works.

Some of the artisans also open their studios for viewing of ‘in progress’ pieces or simply to showcase completed works.

Internationally renowned, these artists have taken residence in the small hamlet of Nungurner, near Metung, and made it their home. Local Visitor Information Centres can advise opening times.

Other artists are content to enjoy their privacy in hideaway locations, but make their works available through small private galleries dotted throughout the region. Works include prints, jewellery, ceramics, sculpture and watercolors.

Artists of local repute include Victor Greenaway, Tricia Allen, Hendrik Forster, Kerryn Kirkby, Max Nicholson, Owen & Lyn Piggott and Daniel Jenkins, names that are known not only Australia wide but also world wide.

Galleries of repute are located in Paynesville, Nicholson, Nungurner, Nowa Nowa and Metung.

There is also an impressive gallery for Koori Artists in Bairnsdale. Indigenous artists such as Ray Thomas, Vicki Couzens, Jenny Mullett and Lee Darrock are all part of the creative workshop that nurtures the artistic aspirations of south eastern Australian Indigenous art. The gallery is within the Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place in Bairnsdale.

The East Gippsland Gallery in Bairnsdale provides a space for local, regional, Victorian and Australian exhibitions to be viewed and local works for sale.

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMESIf you are looking for a journey that allows you to experience local, regional, indigenous and just pure good fun, then look no further.

Throughout the year many festivals and events take place to inspire and recharge your senses. Festivals and events celebrate everything from nudes to horses, jazz to fine food and wine. With the whole year covered, you could certainly come any month and find something happening.

Here is a small selection...

WILD SIDE National Parks, State Forests and Reserves in East Gippsland

East Gippsland has some of the most remote and spectacular national parks in Victoria, but the variety and diversity of National Parks is second to none.

From high up in the Alpine National Park to the Buchan Caves below ground, or water based like The Lakes National Park or Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, your experiences are limitless.

Parks Victoria has an extensive range of material available from their website or the Parks Victoria Regional Office located in Bairnsdale, to assist you.

Here is some information to get your adventure started.

Alfred and Lind National Park Two small parks on the Princes Highway, first reserved in 1925 and located in Snowy River Country. Both protect wet eucalypt forest and stands of warm-temperate rainforest. Access to both is limited, though the 5km self-guided Euchre Valley Nature Drive takes you through the heart of Lind. Activities include self-guided driving and nature observation

Alpine National Park, Covering 6,460sq km of Victoria’s High Country this park incorporates a major slice of East Gippsland through to the NSW border. This is Victoria’s largest National Park, providing unlimited adventure opportunities like walking, snow skiing, horse riding, fishing, canoeing and 4WD. Roads provide easy access in the late spring and summer months, perfect for scenic drives and viewing the wildflowers and lookouts . Stay or camp in nearby towns and explore daily.

Buchan Caves Reserve Nestled amongst rolling green foothills of the Victorian Alps lies the Buchan Caves. Professionally guided show cave tours available every day except Christmas Day. The Royal and Fairy Caves are incredibly detailed, featuring outstanding displays of stalactites, stalagmites and shimmering calcite pools. Picturesque campgrounds and cabin accommodation, picnic and BBQ areas offer great facilities. Walking tracks provide abundant native flora and fauna experiences.

Cabbage Tree Creek Flora Reserve Found in Snowy River Country, just off the highway, is a stand of the unusual and spectacular Cabbage Tree Palms. Commonly found further north in coastal Australia, they provide an exciting and rewarding gift at the end of a great walk.

Cape Conran National Park Located 19km east of Marlo on Cape Conran Road. This coastal park comprises wild ocean beaches and banksia woodlands brimming with nectar feeding birds. Heath lands burst into colorful bloom each spring with ideal places for bird watching.

Seals and occasionally whales can be spotted by careful observers. The temperate waters hide a wealth of colorful marine plant and animal life. Activities include swimming, diving, camping and cabins, nature study, boating, fishing and walking via many tracks and self guided trails.

Coopracambra National Park One of the most remote areas of Victoria remaining largely undisturbed. The red sandstone gorge of the Genoa River and the surrounding granite peaks are a spectacular sight. The 35,000 ha. Park protects high conservation values with undisturbed ecosystems, a heritage river, rare flora and fauna and diverse landscape values.

Colquhoun Regional Park Located in the Gippsland Lakes region representing 3600 hectares of open forest and providing a haven for wildlife. Watch out for goannas at the Log Crossing Picnic Area. A walking trail from the picnic area tracks a tramline which once transported granite, used for the breakwaters at Lakes Entrance. Activities include scenic driving, walking, picnic facilities and horse riding.

Mt Raymond Regional Park Just out of Orbost, drive to the top of Mt Raymond for magnificent views of the Snowy and Brodribb River Flats, Bass Strait and the Errinundra Plateau. Spectacular scenery, walks and picnics.

Point Hicks Marine National Park Granite cliffs stand guard over this pristine water wonderland. Incredible sea life, spectacular sub tidal reefs, kelps and a variety of reef fish make this their home. Point Hicks is forever etched in Australian history as being the first East Coast view of the Australia mainland spotted by Zachary Hicks from aboard Captain James Cook’s Endeavour in 1770. Lighthouse accommodation and camping make this spot popular. Walking, canoeing, bush camping, picnics, nature study and 4x4 touring. (Always check weather conditions)

Snowy River National Park Via Buchan or Orbost and famous for its mighty gorge, the 98,700 hectare Snowy River National Park is also popular as it varies from tall wet eucalypt forest to dry rain-shadow woodland and sub-alpine woodland. Nearly half the park has been designated wilderness to recognize its unspoilt and remote nature. The main access to the river is at McKillops Bridge, where there is a picnic and camping ground, a good canoe launching site, (check conditions). A 15km self-guided walking track and numerous other short and overnight walks exist throughout the park. Vehicle access should be checked via Parks Victoria. Short walks, overnight bush walking, scenic driving (check road conditions), 4WD, canoeing/rafting (check river conditions & permit), nature, camping, picnics. The Park can be reached via Buchan and Orbost.

Victoria Falls Historic Area On the Great Alpine Road just out from Omeo, this 100 hectare area includes the site of Victoria’s first major hydro-electric station, built in 1908 to supply water to the goldfields at Cassilis. The park is set in snow gum and mountain gum woodland above the Victoria and Cougar Rivers. Activities include walks, picnics and fishing.

SPLASH OUTWith so much water around in this region, it would be hard not to have some kind of adventure where you can get up close and personal with H2O. Wet or dry, wild or tame, the choice is yours.

Boating From hiring motorised boats to holiday on, fishing boats to fish from, yachts to sail, or canoes and kayaks to paddle, you will be able to find every type of boating experience in East Gippsland. Even the kids will be able to experience water with paddle boats and cruise boats a safe and easy option.

Pumping the adrenalin is easy with white water rafting on the Snowy River, or waterskiing at high speed on the Gippsland Lakes or Mallacoota Inlet; adventures of this kind are life altering.

Swimming and Surfing A daily ritual in East Gippsland. Surfing from Lakes Entrance to the NSW border are renowned, whilst you can swim in rivers in the High Country, Lakes and Ocean, truly refreshing experiences. Imagine finding your own waterhole in the High Country or special coastal location, surrounded by nothing but peace and serenity.

Croajingolong National Park Stretching for more than 100km along Victoria’s East Coast. This is some of the most remote coastline and spectacular country in Victoria. As well as miles of pristine beaches, there are woodlands, tranquil waterways and colorful heath lands. Wildlife, especially bird life thrives here and includes rare and endangered species. Activities include short walks, overnight coast

and bush walking, camping, nature observation, scenic driving, boating and fishing. Bookings required for campgrounds during holidays.

Errinundra National Park is Located high on the uplands of East Gippsland. The park protects tall old-growth eucalypt forests of shining gum, including some giants hundreds of years old. Also, Victoria’s most extensive stands of cool temperate rainforest can be explored via self-guided walks in ancient forest at Errinundra Saddle. Keep a lookout for lyrebirds and swamp wallabies. Because the land is mostly above 1000 metres, the park is generally inaccessible during winter when rain and snow set in. Activities are scenic driving, walking, nature observation, camping and picnics.

Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park & The Lakes National Park Reach this fastest by boat from Paynesville, about 10 minutes by water. Bordering the picturesque Gippsland Lakes and Ninety Mile Beach, these two parks protect lakes, wetlands, marine and land environments. Rotamah Island is a haven for birds all year round. No car access is available, making this a most interesting location to visit by water. Activities include picnics, walking, swimming, fishing, boating, camping and nature observation,

Lake Tyers Forest Park Situated between Lakes Entrance and Nowa Nowa with tall eucalypt forests surrounding the northern shores of the lake. The Lake Tyers Forest Park is a great area for canoeing along the tranquil waters. On land, a self-guided walk through a warm-temperate rainforest gully at the Silvertop picnic area plus nature observation will delight.

McLeods Morass Wildlife Reserve Just two kilometres south of Bairnsdale a 300m boardwalk leads to a bird hide overlooking a deep, freshwater marsh with many species of water birds. Activities include walking and bird watching

Mitchell River National Park Surrounds the spectacular Mitchell River, just out of Bairnsdale on the road to Dargo. Passing between high cliffs there are several gorges including the Den of Nargun which makes for a great walk. Remnants of temperate rainforest line some of the gorges. The river is good for canoeing (check conditions) and a walking track follows the river downstream. Activities include walking, canoeing, rafting, bush camping, picnics, nature study and 4x4 touring.

Mitchell River Silt Jetties Close to Paynesville on the Gippsland Lakes, is an interesting phenomena. The Mitchell River, fed from the Wonnangatta and Dargo High Plains flows down to a spectacular exit into Lake King. An environmental wonder, the Mitchell River Silt Jetties formed by silt deposits during flood times and are 8kms long. Forming a delta known as ‘digitate’ or ‘finger-delta’ it is one of the finest examples of this kind in the world, second in size only to the silt jetties of the Mississippi River. The Mitchell River, so small in comparison, is quite unique to have such fine silt jetties at it’s mouth. Be sure to bring your fishing rod and camera.

SUITE DREAMSChoosing a mini-break or long stay in this region will be complimented by the range of facilities and services available throughout. The provincial centres and hamlets, villages, coastal and high country towns can provide everything you require. It is safe to say that all your needs will be taken care of.

That way you can sleep easy. Visitor Information Centres are located throughout the region to assist you during your stay, or if you are planning a break, so call them to assist with your holiday plans. Always check for current information at time of visiting.

STAYING AFLOATFancy a stay on a yacht sailing on the sparkling blue waters of the lakes?

Or is a cruiser more your style, motoring on pristine rivers or inlets?

Whatever you choose, an on water stay is well catered for in East Gippsland. In Metung and Paynesville it is easy to hire all kinds of boats to introduce you to life on the lake. Imagine waking up to the sound of softly lapping water on the boat, or dropping anchor each evening after finding a deserted cove, sharing it only with the locals - the bird and marine life!

Spots like Chinaman’s Creek, Nungurner, Barrier Landing, Raymond Island, Steamer Landing or Sperm Whale Head will all become known to you as you explore this wonderful waterway.

Boats are totally fitted out as you would expect and you can have everything provided on board, from coffee to champagne. Provisioning, linen and even your own personal skipper can all be supplied if you truly want to relax.

The Lakes are a safe boating haven, and provide relaxing on water holidays for the novice and the experienced boatie.

BAY WATCHWith all this water around it is no wonder that most of the holiday accommodation in and around the lakes systems is on water or has incredible views of it. In East Gippsland, from the Gippsland Lakes to Mallacoota, there are incredible choices of accommodation located on or near the water. Resorts in Lakes Entrance, Metung and Paynesville have absolute water frontages, some with their own private jetties. These resorts offer the highest quality in waterfront accommodation, ranging from motel to apartment style.

Metung and Paynesville offer stylish and private waterfront apartments and holiday houses with private jetties or boating berths. Your own private oasis with luxury and location can be experienced without the Rivera price tag.

So the idea is to bring your own boat and experience a lifestyle where you step out of your door onto the water and away you go.

SECLUSION ZONEIf you are craving something unique and different when it comes to accommodation, then we can help you. Apart from staying on the water in boats or waterfront properties, you can also enjoy some special experiences that you might not have known existed.

A Lighthouse on the edge of Victoria’s East Coast, looking out to Bass Strait and surrounded by Marine National Park; Luxury guest houses in unique locations like Mallacoota, Gipsy Point, Waterholes or Fraser Island.; Individual cabins or houses in retreat locations like Cape Conran, Wattle Point, Flaggy Creek, Bruthen, Buchan, and many other locations.

Get an insight into the people, the countryside, the food and the sheer

relaxing nature of being somewhere special. Through the eyes of these special hosts and locations you will begin to understand why this region is so different.

Eco and pet-friendly accommodation is also available, so that you can enjoy your East Gippsland break in the style you prefer. If you want a break away from it all, hide away here.

HIDE & CHICWhen you just want to get away and forget about everything. Relaxing, exploring, gourmet gathering or wine tasting, then our region has some of the most beautiful B&B’s and private accommodation choices for you. You could stay in a Gallery, an old School House or Loft. Cottages set up in traditional style or contemporary, cutting edge designs will help even the most stressed out city folk unwind.

You can expect just that extra little bit of pampering and the hint of real pleasure felt by the hosts who are here to please you.

Locations across the region all reflect their own unique character, be it on the lake, in the forest or high country.

BASIC INSTINCTGet back to nature and enjoy some fun with the family. With more National Parks within our region and a range of other wilderness locations, you can camp and experience nature at its finest.

There are many Shire run Camp Grounds that offer some of the most scenic and incredible sites that you will come across, with Mallacoota, Omeo, Buchan and Cape Conran just a few of the locations that will interest the camping fraternity. Parks Victoria have a range of sites and areas set aside for camping with information provided at the end of this section.

TOW-AWAY TERRITORYThere is no doubt that the caravan and camper trailer is the new way to getaway and holiday. Within our region the caravan enthusiast is well catered for, with an amazing choice of caravan parks throughout the whole region. Some parks are run by the local Shire whilst others are privately owned, but all offer a range of facilities from budget to luxury including facilities for couples and families.

With roads in the region being maintained to a high standard, you can be assured of safe touring with many passing lanes. The Great Alpine Road is now accessible for caravans from beginning to end and is a great opportunity to experience the High Country to the Sea. All the other stopovers from one end of the region to the border have fantastic facilities with friendly faces ready to greet you.

THE BIG CHILLWhen the weather gets cold, East Gippsland still stays a little warmer on the coast. However, up in the High Country a wintry wonderland of white powder coats the upper regions from Dinner Plain onwards. The Great Alpine Road is the perfect way in to the snowfields. Omeo, Dinner Plain and Mt Hotham are renowned for having the best Snow facilities in Victoria.

All 3 locations offer varying styles of accommodation from hotel and B&B accommodation in Omeo, specialist style wood and stone Lodges & chalets in Dinner Plain Village and Resort and Chalet style accommodation in Mt Hotham.

Sometimes the weather is so unusual, that you could be skiing in the snow in the morning in Dinner Plain and by afternoon drive down to the Lakes to get behind a boat and water-ski, in still temperate conditions. Paradise is like that!
