Why the Battle of Yorktown happened

The reason the war started is when Cornwallis’ tried to escape. In order to stop this, George Washington sent Marquis de Lafayette and the army of 5,000 Americans to prevent the escape from happening. On September 28, Washington had Cornwallis surrounded with the mixture of all the Continental and French troops. After three weeks of non-stop fighting, Cornwallis and all of his troops finally surrendered. After the Siege of Yorktown, also known as the Battle of Yorktown, it Declared the end for the War of Independence. The battle ended on October 17, 1781. Cornwallis got sick at the end of the war, and did not attend the ceremony for the end of the war. The second in command, General Charles O’Hara, carried Cornwallis’s sword to the ceremony since the First in Command General Cornwallis could not attend.

After the battle

Even though the battle of Yorktown ended the War of Independence, there was still more battles overseas with other theaters. Although there were still other battles overseas, the Patriots had won the battle and America has become it’s own country. The Peace contracts and negotiations began in 1782, and the Treaty of Paris began.

How this affects us today

The battle of Yorktown is the reason we are here today. If the battle of Yorktown never happened then we would be under control Great Britain and most likely still be fighting today. The battle of Yorktown was the last battle of the Revolutionary War. The Treaty of Paris then resolved the conflicts and made America a free, independent country.
