Page 5: BAYSTAGES | 2012.10 - October

There’s a line from Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker that I often paraphrase as: “If you’re gonna live from hand to mouth, you’d better be ambidextrous!” That very much applies to people in the arts who are, sometimes by necessity, sometimes by desire, creatively ambidextrous, and it can be wonderful to experience someone’s previously unknown - to you at least - multi-hyphenate talents.

Eric Inman was first known to me as Artistic Director of Willows Theatre in Concord; I first saw Michelle Ianiro on stage acting in Clue at Boxcar Theatre in San Francisco; and I first met Sally Hogarty as a writer when I joined the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle. This month they are mixing it up.

In Bound By Blood, opening this month at Boxcar Theatre, Eric and Sally are part of the acting ensemble shown below, and Michelle steps out of the frame - literally! - to direct. Did I mention Eric is the playwright? I’m eager to see what these talented folks can do in different roles on and off stage!

Other folks with intriguing new dimensions this month include Helen Reddy, who is making a return to performing after a decade-long hiatus during which she became a practicing hypnotherapist, and Taye Diggs, that handsome leading man of all mediums who has a ready answer to the question: “So you think you can dance?”

Here at BAYSTAGES we’re sticking with our main role - bringing you information about the best theatre, music, dance and more throughout the Bay Area. October brings some of our best weather. We hope it will inspire you to get out to more live performance and expand your role as an audience member. We’re here to help you do that.

ROBERT SOKOL, editor

Meryn MacDougall, Eric Inman, CC Sheldon, Jeremy Parkin, Sally Hogarty and Abigail Edber are part of the cast of Inman’s family drama Bound By Blood, running October 5 - 27 at Boxcar Playhouse .

OCTOBER 2012 I I 7

In Topdog/underdog, the only Pulitzer Prize-winning play to date by an African-American woman, two brothers sort out their lives. The older is a three-card-monte street legend who is working toward a more stable existence. The younger would like to take up his brother’s hustle as a means to income and esteem.

The 2002 play by Suzan-Lori Parks gets a rare local production at Marin Theatre Company this month with Timothy Douglas directing. In the cast are Bowman Wright and Bay Area native Biko Eisen-Martin, who after some time and training away, is making something of a homecoming bow as a newly-minted Actors’ Equity Association union member.

The young actor knows the playwright’s work well. “This will be my second time doing this show and this will be the fourth Suzan-Lori Parks play that I’ve been in,” he says on a break from rehearsal. “Her language is so rich. I love her work. She’s kind of been a beacon for me.”

A poet and former Youth Speaks spoken word artist, Eisen-Martin is pleased with the chance to revisit this role. He feels his approach to the role has “gotten a lot more specific. My understanding of what’s going on has increased. My overall understanding of myself and my journey in the show

has increased. I think this time around Booth is going to be more grounded in me as opposed to being a character. The first time I did it I think I used some of the language kind of in a Shakespearean way. I kind of used the language to create the character. Whereas now I’m trying to let the language just inform me, you know?”

Eisen-Martin calls the relationship between the brothers “very interesting” and suggests “the audience is gonna have a lot to think about in terms of the kind of things that they experience together and the things they put each other through. These guys are very unique. There’s not many monte card throwers and talented kleptomaniacs living together in the same roof.”

THE VENETIAN ROOMat

The on-screen image of Taye Diggs in How Stella Got Her Groove Back or the hit series Private Practice is so cool, so smooth, that you’d naturally expect him to have some great moves. What most people don’t know is that Diggs is actually an accomplished choreographer and a founder of a dre.dance company. He’s making a rare visit to the Bay Area for one night as a song and dance man with a renewed emphasis on dance.

“I’m not getting any younger,” he jokes, “and I’m trying to kind of face my fears. You know, you spend so much time in front of a camera, it’s easy to lose track of how it all began. So I wanted to kind of go back to my roots and kind of challenge myself.”

He’ll definitely be utilizing the voice that won him raves - and perhaps, future wife Idina Menzel - in Rent, but he’s also stepping up with some fancy footwork. “I’ve never danced my own choreography in front of people before. So with this show the main challenge is integrating my own choreography with some of the music that I like to sing. It’s kind of an experiment. I’m hoping that it’s successful.”

Disney’s beloved characters are back in the Bay Area, resplendent in fanciful costumes and singing favorite songs in disney on ice. But what makes this show particularly special is the ice choreography by two-time Emmy-winning Canadian figure skater Sarah Kawahara. A seven-year veteran of the Ice Capades, Kawahara went on to choreograph for television, film and touring shows, working with a who’s-who of great figure skaters like Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, Nancy Kerrigan, Dorothy Hamill and Oksana Baiul to name a few.

“I love how all the arts come together - the dance, music, acting. Different styles constantly marry into my choreography, a real fusion. I continue to choreograph because it is like creating moving sculpture for me.” Kawahara happily accepted the challenges of bringing the Disney characters to life, which is different from the athletic programming she had previously created. “I always loved storytelling,” she says, and is thrilled to be able to work with “so many more characters to add, with so many more layers.”

Kawahara delivers the familiar Disney characters but adds her own creative sensibilities. “The Disney characters do have their expected vocabulary of

movement that their fans expect them to see,” she says. Her creativity applies in different touches, “like the soldiers in Toy Story. I created a drill team routine with actual rifle drill maneuvers.”

For this show Kawahara must work with many moving elements including cumbersome costumes. “I work very closely with the scenic department and with Jerry Bilik, the director,” she says, noting there’s “lots of experimentation and repetition. The character costumes are a real challenge to move in. When you think about how effortless the animated character moves, trying to skate the movement adding jumps and spins and footwork can be tricky.”

DEATHTRAPOctober 19 to November 4Hillbarn Theatre I Poster City$19 -$38 I 650.349.6411hillbarntheatre.org

One of the longest running Broadway thrillers in history, this beautifully constructed play offers a rare and skillful blending of gasp-inducing thrills and spontaneous laughter! Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a pattern of failures and a shortage of funds. A change of fortune occurs when he receives a script by a student which Sidney recognizes immediately as a future Broadway hit.

HALLOWEEN! THE BALLAD OF MICHELE MYERSOctober 19 to 31CounterPULSE I SF$20 I 415.626.2060counterpulse.org

A musical parody of America’s obsession with slasher films. Mrs. Skerritt chaperones four school ‘girls’ up at the lake for a fun-filled Halloween dance over at the boys’ camp. But someone also invited crazed tranny killer Michele Myers to crash the party! Watch her slash through her victims to a disco beat! Shriek in horror at her unmasking! NOTE: Coarse language, simulated sex, bloody mayhem are guaranteed.

SPOTLIGHT

‘Tis the season for ghosties and ghoulies and long legged beasties and things that go bump in the night! Halloween (Samhain, if you’re a Wiccan!) will be here at the end of the month and what better way to celebrate than with some theatrical tricks and treats?

Leading the pack is Producing Artistic Director Russell Blackwood and his pack of Thrillpeddlers, serving up shocktoberfest 13: The Bride of death for their annual evening of classic and premiering macabre one-act dramas and black comedies, monster mashed with musical performances and a lights-out spook show finale.

This year’s line-up of Grand Guignol glory includes: coals of fire, a “banned in Britain” two-hander from 1922 directed by Flynn DeMarco; the original work The Bride of death by Bay Area actor and playwright Michael Phillis, where Sunset Boulevard meets Edgar Allen Poe and Dorian Gray; The Twisted Pair by frequent contributor Rob Keefe, entwining the lust for fame and the discovery of DNA; tuneful terror in Those Beautiful ghouls composed by Scrumbly Koldewyn and performed by Leigh Crow; and more.

Put away that Thriller video and sink your teeth into Peninsula Ballet Theatre and their production of Bruce Steivel’s dracula. Set to haunting music based on eastern European melodies intertwined with Strauss waltzes, the opulent ballet plays out the struggle of love over death. In a clever bit of cause marketing, PBT is granting a certificate for a 30% discount on tickets to anyone who donates a pint to Blood Centers of the Pacific on October 8 and 14. love in the Time of zombies, written by Kirk Shimano and directed by Claire Rice,

a new rom-zom-com from San Francisco Theatre Pub presents four friends - a neurotic

gay boy, his roommate, and their accidental dates - trapped in a zombie-surrounded cabin with

a mysterious woman who may be a mad scientist looking to use the survivors as lab experiments. It’s “a

journey to the edge of undeath that challenges the core of what makes us human and what makes us a zombie.” Romantic,

comedic and sexy, this play may in fact be the only queer feel-good zombie Armageddon play in the world...which could be ending soon, so see it while you can!

On that bright day, the color of the world will be Armageddon, dripping with sex and romance and passion and one perfect little black dress. Written by John Byrd and directed by Robert Lundy-Paine, the show styles itself as a campy, hilarious pop/rock musical reminiscent of The Rocky Horror Show and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom. Beware! OCTOBER 2012 I I 19

After a decade of retirement from public performing, Grammy winner Helen Reddy is back in the spotlight and feeling fine. “I thought maybe my voice would be lower,” she jokes, “but no, it’s all totally there just exactly as it was. It was just lying in wait.”

Some private crooning for her sister Toni Lamond’s birthday got the ball rolling last year. “I didn’t really intend to get back into show business, but I do love to sing, and I’m back on my own terms,” she says. “It’s not a question of having to sing the same 13 hits over and over again. I can do the songs that I love and new stuff to explore. I was more of a jazz singer in the beginning, it was never intended that I would be a pop singer, but that is how I put the kids through college.”

Reddy spent the last decade in her native Australia as a licensed clinical hypnotherapist. “I practice a form of spiritual hypnotherapy, specifically, past life regressions, reuniting people with loved ones who have passed over. I deal with the other side a lot.”

Rekindling her performing career is reuniting her more often with her own family as both her children live in the U.S. “They don’t see me as Helen Reddy, they see me as Mum, and if performing again means I can spend more time in the United States, then they like that.”

STRINDBERG CYCLEOctober 12 to November 18Cutting Ball Theater I SF$10-$50 I 415.525.1205cuttingball.com

August Strindberg was a pioneer of naturalism, expressionism, and the theater of dreams. His five chamber plays, in new translations by Paul Walsh, are being performed together in repertory for the first time in any language. The plays are The ghost sonata, The Pelican, The Black glove, storm, and Burned house. They can be seen over three separate performance days or in a one-day marathon on November 10.

SPACEHOLDER FESTIVALOctober 5 to 7ODC Theater I SF$25-$45 I 415.863.9834odctheater.org

Morgan Thorson has choreographed an evening-length performance for five dancers that investigates the power of patterns in human behavior and in dance-making. The performers engage in an analogous ritual of appraisal governed by the rhythms of auctioneering. Sound designer and composer Sxip Shirey developed an original score for the performance incorporating not only auctioneer chants but also the sounds of burial, excavation, and other found sounds.

OCTOBER 2012 I I 21

Balancing the right notes for The sound of Music is the challenge for Elizabeth McKoy, Artistic Director of Berkeley Playhouse, and her team of family-friendly theatre makers.

McKoy eschews the term “children’s theatre” and its implications of simplistic, one-dimensional presentations meant only to entertain. “The thing for us in multi-generational theatre, and it’s super important that we get this out, is we really see the parents or the adult who’s bringing the young person, as the most important person in being able to guide this conversation.”

“Our goal is to really create multiple access points,“ she says, “so that parents feel confident that they can go to whatever level of depth they want to in explaining the Nazis, while ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience this great work of art and let it touch them at whatever level of prior experience they bring, all the while allowing flexibility in terms of how in-depth the adults want to get in explaining the bigger context. I think it’s what art does the best: it opens the conversation.”

Another challenge is preparing for audiences who only know the Oscar-winning film version. “The movie does what the movie does super well, which is to really focus on the romantic relationship,” says McKoy. “In the play I think the context of the war - the different ways in which the Austrian people experienced it, and the ways in which they justified their actions or felt helpless and went into the war - is expressed through some of the songs that people don’t know as well because they are not in the movie.”

BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW jACKSONOctober 9 to November 24SF Playhouse I SF$30-$70 I 415.677.9596sfplayhouse.org

SF Playhouse launches its second decade with the rock-and-roll blast of Bloody Bloody andrew Jackson. It marks the first production for the company in their new location at 450 Post Street.

Be careful what you wish for,” offers Producing Director Susi Damilano about what she and Artistic Director Bill English created ten years ago. “Bill and I dream big. We started this theatre with a goal of becoming the San Francisco version of Steppenwolf, or Donmar. We wanted to have a mid-size theatre in the heart of San Francisco and bring our own brand of off-Broadway style to San Franciscans. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to remember this is not a dream anymore.”

English chose this play to launch their new space because it felt like the perfect fit for an opening that just happened to coincide with the election cycle. “It is going to be an extravaganza,” says Damilano. “Nina Ball designed an incredible set that resembles the dome on the capital building...as it’s being built. We’ll have a rock band, and Ashkon Davaran will dazzle us with his version of Andrew Jackson.”

The musical presents the seventh U.S. president as a rock star and focuses on his early family losses due to Indian attacks, his support of the Indian Removal Act, and his relationship with his wife Rachel and the conflicts of public and private life for elected officials.

Margaret Jenkins Dance Company celebrates their 39th season with a preview of the new work Times Bones, created by Jenkins in collaboration with her company of eight dancers, poet Michael Palmer, composer Paul Dresher and set/lighting designer Alexander Nichols. Times Bones examines the “bones” of four decades of creating dance to see which themes continue to resonate. “We want to show that this past has accumulated into something that the company is now. The accumulation of our history generated a lot of visual ideas,” says Nichols.

Jenkins and Nichols will utilize Kanbar Hall’s theater and atrium - a sweeping, light-filled space spanning three floors. “The piece is a journey through history, in a metaphoric sense,” says Nichols. “We looked at this piece in segments. There is a progression of movement as the dancers work their way into the theater, with a series of platforms they use to make their way to the stage.”

Once inside the theater, Nichol’s stunning scenic installation incorporates abstracted video segments as a backdrop for layers of dancers. As always, the work bears the spirit of all who were involved in the creative process. “Margaret Jenkins comes from a school of choreography that believes in extensive collaboration,” says Nichols. “All of us are inspirational in what the piece finally looks like. There are so many years of history that we lean on each other in good ways.”
