Assistant Principal's Message

Dear Students and Parents,

What an interesting start to the term. It has been so great to

see you all engaging with learning from home and trying your

best in these challenging times.

Students, from what I have observed, you are trying very hard

during this time and we know that you are missing your classmates and teachers. Keep up the great effort! The

teachers are working on ways to connect you in class meetings over video chat – more to come on this.

Parents, I would like to extend my gratitude towards your efforts and perseverance during the move to learning

from home. My own experiences with my Son (Grade 1) and Daughter (3 Year-Old Kinder) have taught me that

there are good days and bad days when it comes to attempting learning tasks. Again, we applaud your efforts!

I’d also like to thank you for marking the attendance during this time – it will assist us in our record keeping whilst

we are learning from home.

Teachers, this has been a time of steep learning curves, but also an affirmation of your talents and innovative

spirit. Below is some evidence of this! If you haven’t had the privilege of viewing this video yet, I can highly

recommend it.

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge our new Principal Bret Mottrom and the Leadership Team for their guidance and

expertise during this time. These people have worked in overdrive over the past 3 weeks to ensure our transition

into flexible learning from home has been a smooth one.

Chatterboxes and Favourite Family Events

The students in year 3 made chatterboxes. They surveyed their family about their favourite food, events and sport. They used the information to include in their chatterboxes. They were asked to check how much their family knew about each other. The children also wrote about their favourite

family event.

Jess Koch Blaich Desiree – Wellbeing Leaders

April 2020

Dear families and friends,

We launched our wellbeing theme of KINDNESS at the beginning of 2020 not knowing

how fitting it would be even during this pandemic.

KINDNESS is ‘the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate’.

How are you showing kindness at home? If you have stories or photos to share for our

next newsletter please email:

[email protected]

*Please include your child’s first name and class.

ANZAC DAY:

Usually we would come together as a school community for our ANZAC Day Assembly.

We hope you take them time to remember on Saturday 25 April 2020. Lest we forget.

Here are some extra wellbeing resources where the whole family can join in!

Below are four research-supported strategies that may help support you

and the people in your life, whether younger or older:

Notice what’s good.

It’s easy for us to join the outrage and panic, but our students and

children swim in that same water. If we want them to be calm and

optimistic, we need to role model this. We know humans are innately

good, with a deep desire to help each other. We also understand the

power of descriptive norms; if we describe our world as pro-social

(helpful, kind, community-focused) then we inspire that behaviour.

If we describe our world as anti-social (hoarding, greedy, selfish) then of course we inspire that behaviour.

**Action: create pro-social ripples**

Send a daily gratitude text, email or letter to someone.

Look for and celebrate the helpers in your world, such as the wonderful community groups, which are springing up online.

Ask young people to identify a way in which they could help their family. This might be as simple as

maintaining good personal hygiene or setting the table for dinner.

Be present.

Practice mindfulness, and schedule mindful breaks for your students or children. Resisting the urge to

‘mentally time travel (ruminating “if only we…” or worrying “I should…”) – we are here and now, and the

more time our mind spends with us the calmer we will feel. Just ten minutes of quiet, present-centered

reflection can be enough to significantly reduce stress levels. Our body is always anchored in the present,

which is why our mindfulness practices often start by focusing on our body or breath.

**Action: be mindful**

Limit time spent scrolling through newsfeeds or consider a media-fast for 48 hours (don’t worry – you’ll hear about any significant events from others around you).

Create routines for anyone spending long periods at home. Structure and stability cannot be underestimated in their capacity to support mental health.

Investigate some of the great free practices, which are available online such as Mindfulness Meditation for kids, Body Scan Meditations, Cosmic Kids Yoga, GoNoodle or go to Headspace:

Bayswater South Primary School Issue: 9 May 1 2020

Acknowledge negative emotions.

Feeling scared, uneasy, worried or anxious about the current state

of the world is understandable. If we try to ignore these emotions,

studies show we will only feel them more strongly.

**Action: name the feeling or emotion**

Understand that the emotion may pass quickly or slowly, but it will eventually pass.

Curiously examine the emotion. What is creating this?

Consider: is there a way to ‘reframe’ the experience? Is

there anything positive which can be drawn from the current situation?

Go outside & be active.

It would be easy for us all to bunker down and lock ourselves away indoors. We know the importance of

physical activity for both mental and physical health, and we also know how impactful being in nature is.

**Action: create healthy habits**

Spend some time outside each day; reading a book, drawing something in nature, walking a dog, planting vegetables, taking photos, getting creative with craft projects…

Move your body (there are many free You Tube sessions and movement sessions already available online)

Try counting your steps – use a FitBit or download a free app and start measuring the number of steps

you take each day. Start small, track your progress and be easy on yourself!

Page 21: Bayswater South Primary School Issue: 9 May 1 2020 THE …€¦ · 01/05/2020  · PC -Shree Schmaal PD -Isabella Maresca. Bayswater South Primary School Issue: 9 May 1 2020 1/2A

Bayswater South Primary School Issue: 9 May 1 2020

Get up regularly and move, especially when you are sitting for long periods of time. Walk around the room, drink water or get some fresh air.

Start early – just 20 minutes of moderate activity could significantly improve your mood! Exercising at the beginning of the day kick starts your metabolism, so start your day with a brisk walk, go to the gym, go for a walk or jog with the kids or do yoga together as a family.

Below are 30 ways/actions you can do to look after yourselves and others.
