Gift from the heart was founded in 2009 by Bev Woods, an Independent Registered Dental Hygienist in Trenton Ontario. Her idea was simple, to set aside one day a year to give back to the community and to not only offer no cost dental hygiene care, but to bring public awareness to the large number of Ontarians unable to afford basic preventive oral health care. Little did she know that Registered Dental Hygienists from across the country would want to join in, and so this event takes place on the Saturday before Valentine’s Day every year with a growing number of registrants from every province where Registered Dental Hygienists are able to practice independently. In Ontario, legislation changed back in 2007 allowing Registered Dental Hygienists to practice their services outside the traditional dental office. Due to this change, there have been many independent dental hygiene practices, both stand alone and mobile, opened across the province. The Gift From The Heart event has become an integral part of spreading the word regarding this change and increasing awareness regarding the public’s right to choose their health care provider. Some hygienists will rent a chair or volunteer their time on this day, and many Independent practices will open their doors to the public. Dental Hygienists are very passionate people who enjoy sharing their knowledge and skills, especially with those in need, this day offers the perfect forum to do just that. Why we are participatingAt Beach Dental Hygiene Studio, we are proud not only to be one of the few Independent Dental Hygiene Practices listed in the Wasaga Beach area, but we are also proud to be a member of this community and feel excited to have the opportunity to show we care. This event is not simply about “free cleanings” it is more importantly about helping those in need beyond the immediate results that a professional cleaning will provide. We plan to not only provide our services at no cost, but we will also be offering education regarding such things as, the link between oral and systemic disease, caring for infants teeth, dietary considerations, oral side effects of medications, and proper brushing and flossing techniques. Many of us take for granted the value of some of the most basic information that is learned through regular preventive oral care appointments. For the segment of the population that cannot afford these services, much of this information goes unlearned, and may lead to many oral and general health problems. This will be the 6th consecutive year for the event, but 2015 marks the first year that we will be participating. It will take place on Saturday, February 7th at our Wasaga Beach Clinic, 1383 Mosley Street, Unit#1 and is open to those who could not otherwise afford basic dental hygiene care by appointment only. Are you a candidate? This event is open to adults as well as children.Your response to some simple questions will determine your eligibility. Space is limited and is based on a first come first serve basis so don’t delay!Beach Dental Hygiene StudioSharon Brooks-Wallace 705-429-9224Registered Independent Dental Hygienist

The Fence

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily, gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said “you have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one.” You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there. Make sure you control your temper the next time you are tempted to say something you will regret later.

This one dish entree combines chicken thighs, potatoes and peas to produce a healthy and satisfying main dish. Unlike chicken breasts, which can dry out if over cooked, the thighs stay juicy and moist. I like to serve cheesy buttermilk drop biscuits with it or a nice tossed salad. 6 boneless skinless chicken thighs½ tsp salt1/8 tsp pepper1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil1 tbsp cumin1 1/2 tsp paprika2 onins halved then each half quartered3 cloves of garlic minced6 oz mushrooms1 1/2 cups chicken broth2 carrots cut into slices2 cups mini potatoes2 cups frozen peas2 oz chopped cilantro1 tbsp lemon juiceCut chicken thighs in half and sprinkle with 1/4 tsp of the salt and pepper. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium high heat. Cook the chicken for about 4 minutes or until browned. Sprinkle cumin and paprika over the chicken. Stir in onions, mushrooms and garlic and cook for about a minute or two and pour in the chicken broth. Add the potatoes and carrots and simmer covered for about 20 minutes or until the chicken is cooked and the potatoes are tender. Stir in the peas and cook for 5 more minutes or until tender. Stir in the cilantro and lemon juice and serve. Makes about 8 servings

4 cups all purpose flour4 teaspoons baking powder1 teaspoon baking soda2 teaspoons sugar1 1/2 teaspoon salt1 cup (8 ounces) unsalted butter, chilled and cut into 1/2 inch cubes2 cups buttermilk, plus more for brushing1 cup cheddar cheese1 tsp chopped garlic2 tbsp chopped parsleyFreshly ground black pepperProcedurePreheat oven to 400°F. In bowl of a stand mixer, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Turn mixer on to low speed, then add butter and mix until butter is in pea-sized or smaller chunks. Add cheddar, garlic and parsley. Drizzle in buttermilk. Once buttermilk is mostly absorbed, turn off mixer and carefully fold any stray flour or buttermilk into the dough with a rubber spatula.

Line a baking sheet with parchment or a silicone mat. Scoop biscuits into 1/2 cup mounds, leaving about 2 inches between each biscuit on all sides. Brush with buttermilk and sprinkle with pepper. Bake for about 20 minutes, until brown.

Frozen Meals on Wheels

The Highway Traffic Act of Ontario and its Regulations have hundreds of sections that outline the lawful use of motor vehicles on our roads, streets and highways. Below I hope to clarify some of the more popular misunderstood sections of this Act and regulations.

First my favourite; “I have to the end of the month, in the month of my birthday to get my new validation permit. Right?”. Wrong, your current validation sticker expires on your birthday at midnight. So if you have not renewed your validation sticker on or before your birthday then you could be stopped and charged. Under section 7(1)(a) of the HTA states; “No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless, there exists a currently validated permit for the vehicle” and the fine for this offence is $110.

Next we all know how important it is this time of year to properly snow and ice from our motor vehicle windows prior to heading out on our roadways, but did you realize that when cleaning off your motor vehicle windows it is also important to clean snow and dirt away from your 2 Ontario Licence Plates? Yes, section 13(2) of the HTA states; “Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried.” Yes if your Ontario Licence Plates are obstructed by snow you could be stopped and charged with a fine of $110.

We all can appreciate, when you move and change your primary residence it can be a busy time, with packing and unpacking, getting basic services such as telephone and possibly cable hooked up, but one important item that is sometimes overlooked is to notify the Ministry of Transportation your change of address. Section 33(1) of the HTA Ontario Regulation #340/94 states; “The holder of a driver's licence who changes his or her address shall, within six days after the change, send by registered mail or have filed with the Ministry a notice in writing, or electronically in a format designated by the Ministry, of the change giving the former address, the present address and the number of his or her driver's licence.” The fine for not notifying the Ministry of Transportation of your change of address within the prescribed time again would be $110.

Ÿ I would like to share an experience with you about drinking and driving. As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd social session over the years. A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends and had a few too many beers. Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before - I took a bus home. I arrived back safely and without incident which was a real surprise since I had never driven a bus before and I’m not sure where I got this one.

It's been four years since WBSFF has been instilling the vision of “Bringing the World to Wasaga Beach Through a Shared Passion for Film and the Power of Storytelling” and the past two days lots of stories were told to our audience from international and local filmmakers. The film festival culminated at the Red Carpet Gala Awards at RecPlex in Hall 1A and B with an all-star studded evening including a gorgeous Hollywood vintage set design created by Garry Sawatsky from Skull Island, succulent food platters served by our very own Taste Of Paradise. It was a magical night with entertainment such as Aisha, Aerialist from Aerial Silks Collingwood, Sydney Boyle accompanied by Damian Spaulding, featured artist, Austin McCarthy, sent a video as he couldn't attend he is currently in Montreal studying at Concordia University, Pat Lucknow, Elvis Tribute Artist, who added that Elvis flare to the gala, two Ballroom Dancers exuded their dance moves to the audience: Jone Lam/Briia Camilang presented by Dance By Design and Jennifer Campbell/Lou Sennivelle from The DanceRoom,Awards were presented by John Van Driel, On-Air Host for the New Classical 96.3 FM in Toronto, Dale Goldhawk, Goldhawk Fights Back from Zoomer Radio, KC Colby from CTV News Barrie, Rosemarie O'Brien, General Manager of Collingwood Elvis Festival, Mel Pockaj, Host of Georgian Bay Life on Rogers TV and Khaleel Gandhi, Executive Manager for Community Arts Celebration. Also included in the show were Red Carpet Greetings sent from Brent Butt – Corner Gas, Marilyn Lightstone, Gino Vannelli and Moses Znaimer. Most of the hardware went to Matt Tipold for “Severed Ties” where Tipold received the WBSFF Regional Action, Comedy, Drama Platinum Award sponsored by Re/Max of Wasaga Beach Brokerage and WBSFF Master Regional Award sponsored by Canadian Wet Basement Solutions along with WBSFF Regional Music Video Gold Award for “Holdin' My Breath” featuring Austin McCarthy. Sturgeon FallsApprox. 6,700. In Springer Township, Nipissing District, on the Sturgeon River, 5 km. upstream from Lake Nipissing, on Hwys. 17 & 64. A Hudson’s Bay Company post had been established at the mouth of the Sturgeon River before 1880, but the present townsite was not settled until 1883, when the Canadian Pacific Railway line came through the region. The townsite then was called Barries Falls. With the railway came many French-Canadians settlers; much of today’s population has French as its mother tongue. For years Sturgeon Falls was known for its excellent caviar, taken from the sturgeon of Lake Nipissing. Overfishing has ended the commercial viability of the industry.

Lick's Homeburgers & Ice Cream (corporate name: Lick's Concepts, Inc.) is a privately

owned Canadian restaurant chain founded in 1980 with a $5,000 loan by Denise Meehan,

the president and sole shareholder. It is known for its burgers, which are called

"homeburgers".

Meehan, a native of Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, grew up in a tourist resort operated by her parents.Meehan opened her first Lick's location store on Queen Street East in Toronto in 1980. The second store opened at 2383 Kingston Rd in Scarborough several years later. (Both these locations are now defunct.) From 1984 through 2009, the business expanded to numerous cities in the province of Ontario as the Lick's name and menu became available for franchise. At its zenith, there were 30 Lick's locations throughout southern Ontario. In 2002, Meehan was named to the Sales Hall of Fame by the Canadian Professional Sales Association. Meehan has also been profiled by Hilary magazine.Lick's began to encounter difficulty in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, partly because of its effect on consumer habits. As well, the proliferation of gourmet burger chains in recent years eroded Lick's market share. In 2012, two Toronto-area Lick's franchises closed due to arrears in rent, the fourth and fifth Lick's outlet to close in a short period of time. The Barrie and Oakville Trafalgar Road locations were foreclosed by landlords in September 2013. The Guelph location was seized by its landlord on November 21, 2013. Mississauga's last location was seized by its landlord on November 27, 2013. By the fall of 2013, the chain had 10 stores, down from 30 in 2012. As of June 2014 there are 8 Lick's locations remaining. New stores are expected to open/ reopen in Hamilton, Burlington and Toronto - though no timeline has been released.

thYes, I’m talking about the 4 Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. You know…. “Bringing the World to Wasaga Beach through a shared passion for film and the power of storytelling.” The event that rocked Wasaga Beach Saturday night on January 24, 2015.You know you are on the right track when attendance surpasses your expectations and more seating and tables have to be set up to accommodate an enthusiastic crowd that came for a great time and to see great local entertainment and awards for international, national and regional film makers. It warms the heart when you are told in person by a Toronto film maker at the Red Carpet Awards Gala that this town is a very nice town, the people are so friendly and he’s really happy to be here and to be part of our film festival. It’s a great feeling to get countless congratulatory emails telling you people had a great time and can’t wait to come back next year. It’s rewarding to hear a Cannes Film Festival winner with roots in Wasaga Beach that wants to be part of the organizing committee next year. You can get a real sense of achievement when so many people approach you and talk about how this festival has reached greater heights each and every year.

You know you have the RecPlex ambience right, yes I said ambience, when people want to know more about the great stage display Garry Sawatzky, Skull Island, volunteered to design build and set up and they want to use it at their functions. (Materials courtesy of Castle Building Centre, Wasaga Beach)Just think what it means to have all the Gala attendants want to have their picture taken in front of the film festival banner along the Red Carpet Walk. And, oh by the way, when you get 86 likes on one picture alone among countless likes for other pictures on your film festival Facebook page, I really think that says you have hit the tipping point for greater things to come.It makes you feel really good when you hear your Town Mayor, Brian Smith, give such great compliments to all involved to make this happen and encouraging remarks about how we are on to something for the great benefit of Wasaga Beach. The two pages of sponsor logos beaming off the page from our film festival program brochure tells you our local businesses are in on the build towards making this a weeklong festival in January in perhaps a brand new Cultural Centre to be built in Wasaga Beach to feature our great local talent and welcome the World 365 days a year. Most important for me was to have my beautiful sweetheart Eva beside me as I was savoring the moments at the Gala to see all this hard work and effort come to fruition. Thank you to all volunteers, supporters, entrants, partners and everyone who did their part to

thmake this 4 annual film festival a raving success. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at [email protected]. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, work and play.Gary is president of Critel Professional Services, chairs the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival and lives and works in Wasaga Beach.

do not sweat as much as someone moving through an 8 station circuit with little to no rest in between each exercise. Both types of workouts are challenging, but the amount of sweat you produce will be very different. Your environmental surroundings can also influence how much you’ll sweat. Cooler temperatures or working out in an air conditioned room will result in less sweating, while a warmer room, such as a hot yoga studio, will result in the opposite. Keep in mind that sweating is your body’s way of cooling itself. Some people are simply more efficient at this than others, thus more sweat! Instead of measuring your sweat to see if you’re working hard enough, try using the ‘talk test’ (if you’re working hard it should be tough to talk), a heart rate monitor (an indicator of how hard your heart is working) or measure your workload (wattage, mileage, Mets). Question: Since retirement, I have more time on my hands and want to devote a few days a week to working out. But, I’ve never worked out before. Can you give me some advice to help me get started so I do not injure myself?Answer: One of the easiest ways to avoid injury when beginning a fitness program is to, first, get clearance from your physician. It’s important, especially if you have been sedentary, to know what you can do based on your current health, age, and overall physical condition. Next, once you find an activity that you enjoy, make sure to take time to warm up properly to help lubricate joints and slowly
