Khalid Al-ZayaniChairman

Dear Members,

Welcome to the Summer edition of the BBBF magazine. A number of you will shortly be taking a well earned opportunity to visit the United Kingdom and cooler climates on your summer holidays. No doubt you will have time to refl ect on the challenging year so far. Despite the recent uncertainty, we strongly believe that we have in place the economic fundamentals and entrepreneurial spirit to build a solid path to achieving Vision 2030. No visionary objective is without challenge and I urge each and every one of you and your businesses to step up to the plate. This is supported by recent independent data predicts that the Bahrain GDP is likely to post a 3-4% increase during 2012.

The Spring period is always an exciting and high octane period of the year for the business community. We were delighted to see the return of the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the huge number of delegates attending various international and regional sector conferences. The Forum was also blessed to welcome H.E. Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf, Minister of Works and H.E. Dr. Abdul Hussain Bin Ali Mirza, Minister of Energy to address. Both Ministries are hugely important to the continued economic prosperity and development of Bahrain. Both Ministers highlighted the enduring historic friendships and fantastic business opportunities that exist between our two islands. Record attendances at both events fi rmly register that our members really appreciate hearing from our leaders. Accordingly, we will continue to welcome Ministries to the Forum in the coming months.

A special mention also to Gulf Air and HSBC, our 2012 corporate sponsors, and to Standard Chartered

Bank who sponsor our Special Interest Group (SIG) initiatives. They continue to be a great source of fi nancial support and generous encouragement and their unwavering support allows us the fi nancial security to increase the number of initiatives and enhances the quality and number of events that we organise for the benefit of our members.

We hope that you enjoy this Forum edition and the Committee is looking forward to seeing you, and your guests, at forthcoming BBBF functions and hearing more about how we can serve you better. Despite the traditionally slower summer vacation period, the BBBF will continue to run events throughout the warmer months and I do sincerely hope that if you are in town, then you and your guests will be able to join us. I wish those of you travelling - safe and relaxing journeys. Please see Page 5 for details of our events.

With kind regards

Khalid Al-ZayaniChairman

the board, and we are providing encouragement and practical support to that end. But, overall, this long-standing and close relationship between friends and allies is in good shape.

I hope that BBBF members have a pleasant summer and that some of you will be able to get to the ‘greatest show on earth’, namely the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It promises to be a wonderful event and a tremendous showcase for the best of British.

Ramadan kareem.

Iain Lindsay OBEBritish Ambassador

With the Queen’s Diamond With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend just days away, I’ve just been reminded by a TV interviewer of the global appeal of Her Majesty, our Royal Family and all the trappings of the British monarchy. And that also applies here in Bahrain, where we’re not only seeing the British community and the Embassy arranging celebratory events but also genuine warmth from Bahraini’s as Her Majesty celebrates 60 years as our Head of State. I met His Majesty King Hamad shortly before he left for the lunch hosted by the Queen at Windsor Castle on 18 May for monarchs from around the world. He was looking forward hugely to seeing Her Majesty. A photograph of him with Her Majesty at the event will greet BBBF members when they next visit my residence.

We kicked off local celebrations on 25 April with the Queen’s Birthday Party, the Embassy’s showcase event of the year, which was making a welcome reappearance after a gap of two years. Feedback from guests suggests it was one of the best they had been to, which is great to hear. I was delighted that we were able to celebrate so enjoyably the Queen’s Birthday and kick off the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in the company of His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, representing King Hamad.

One of the themes of the event was the GREAT Campaign, launched by Prime Minister David Cameron last September and designed to showcase the breadth of Britain’s strengths, from the creative industries to sport, from technology to entrepreneurialism. It was therefore most appropriate that the evening was supported so generously by British Airways, HSBC and Rolls Royce motor cars - all great British brands, for which I am most grateful.

April also saw the return of the F1 Grand Prix. I was delighted that it went ahead. I hope BBBF members noted Prime Minister Cameron’s words of encouragement for Bahrain ahead of the event. It was disappointing that McLaren didn’t win. Let’s hope they can cure their sticky wheel-nut problem by next year! McLaren’s link with Bahrain is a great example of successful inward investment into the UK which I would be delighted to see Bahraini entrepreneurs emulate. There are many good reasons to invest in the UK beyond property. In early May I attended the FCO’s annual Ambassador’s Conference. Both the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer underlined to us the national importance of the FCO’s Prosperity Agenda, including the role played by embassies in increasing UK exports and foreign direct investment into the UK, and opening markets. Our goals are ambitious: by 2020, to double UK exports and to get another 100,000 UK companies exporting. A

key part of our strategy is focussing on High Value Opportunities. Here in Bahrain that means for us looking at, among other projects, airport expansion, LNG regasification, downstream aluminium processing, and sanitary and water engineering infrastructure. If any BBBF members are interested in working with us on any of these or other major opportunities please speak to Bill Scarth, the new Head of the UKTI team at the Embassy.

As ever, I look at the political and security situation and refl ect that it is still having a serious impact on some sectors of the economy. But recent visits to BAPCO and Alba show that there are still major opportunities and huge ambition in Bahrain. What I can assure BBBF members is that the UK is committed to helping Bahrain build a stable future, both in political and economic terms. We want to see more and quicker reform across

It is now 100 Days since I took over from Rebecca as Head of UK Trade and Investment in Bahrain; a good time to reflect on where we are and where we are going. It’s been a busy 3 months as my arrival coincided with a strategic change at UKTI HQ as well as personnel changes in my own Section. This has presented both challenges and opportunities, which I believe mirrors the commercial position facing us in Bahrain today. Clearly you, the business community, have faced and will continue to face challenges. But there are also opportunities and it’s the UKTI Team’s job to help relevant businesses to overcome the challenges and realise the benefi ts of the opportunities.

I was asked to present the new UKTI strategy at last month’s AGM. To briefl y recap, UKTI will focus on 4 new ‘pathways’ – doubling the number of UK SMEs that export, targeting High Value Opportunities (HVOs), developing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in UK and

Embassy News managing our key strategic relationships. The coincidence of 4 pathways and 4 UKTI Bahrain Team members, along with the 100% changeover of our people between February and August was too good an opportunity to miss.

Heather Hopper has taken over from Sanya Cooper as the Infrastructure Sector lead and will also be our SME Pathway Champion. Sadly, Myrna Al Mehaiza has decided to move on, we wish her all the best for her new position at the US Embassy. Her successor, Imane Al Alaiwat, joins us in June. A big welcome to Imane and we look forward to your work in the Financial and Professional Services sector and as our FDI Pathway Champion.

After 17 years of un-stinting effort, Eileen Al Saie will be retiring this summer. Eileen is our Education and Healthcare Sector specialist, the HVO Pathway Champion and also carries all our corporate knowledge! It is impossible to express adequately our thanks and appreciation for her years of excellent service; we wish her a long and happy retirement here in Bahrain.

That just leaves me, as Head of the Team, taking on the role of Strategic Relationships Pathway champion. As we learn our new jobs, work through the changes and, hopefully, continue to deliver business as usual we look

to our BBBF colleagues and friends both for your advice and assistance. We welcome any of your ideas on how best to support you and UK businesses, what we need to do to ‘get it right’ and of course our doors are always open for a chat.

Finally, the UK Government has re-iterated its policy on Bribery, you may remember that the Embassy/BBBF ran a SIG event on the subject last year. Feedback from business around the globe shows there is a continuing demand for clarification over issues such as facilitation payments. Payment of these by UK fi rms and individuals is illegal under UK law. The Government has provided a letter making clear that facilitation payments are illegal which you can use with local authorities, I can provide copies. I also have access to an FCO Bribery toolkit. This contains helpful guidance and advice including cases studies, Q&A’s and standing instructions on reporting suspected cases involving British fi rms to the Serious Fraud Offi ce. Again I can provide details.

That just leaves me to say Ramadan Kareem, Eid Mubarak and have a great summer.

Try to cast your mind back four years to the summer 2008. If you can remember what you were doing then – living in another country perhaps, renewing the latest of your many rolling contracts in Bahrain, or recently settled here - it will probably seem like a strange combination of a long time ago, yet only yesterday. As I come to the end of my four years at the Embassy I can still remember stepping off the plane for the fi rst time into the thick heat, the invaluable contact-heavy Blackberry passed to me by my predecessor Steve Harrison, entering my offi ce and wondering how I’d manage, then returning to Juffair to see my wife Juliette and the kids looking so at home that I knew all would be fi ne.

So much has happened since then - visits by the Foreign Secretary, FCO Minister Alistair Burt, TRHs The Duke of York and Earl of Wessex, The Lord

Mayor; numerous trade missions, talks and business leads; a new government in the UK; and of course the events of 2011. Throughout this time though, a consistent theme has been the open and friendly energy of the BBBF, an energy that mirrors the welcome I have received from Bahraini’s in all walks of life. Chairman Khalid Al Zayani and Vice Chair Austin Rudman, the Committee and the Executive Offi ce, and of course the members (particularly those in the Security SIG with whom I have spent the most time) - all have made my time here

more fun, and I believe more effective. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone.

But when the old goes out then the new comes in. So I have great pleasure in introducing my successor, as of mid-June, Russ Dixon. Russ will be coming to Bahrain with his wife Debbie, having been Minister Burt’s Private Secretary. He also has a wealth of press, management and other experience behind him, and as importantly, is a friendly bright and energetic colleague. I am sure he will fi t right in, and that the BBBF will make him feel incredibly welcome. I wish Russ, and all the BBBF members, a successful and prosperous next four years (although I hope they don’t pass quite as quickly as the last four).

SIG - Update

As we plan and think a b o u t

both speakers for lunches and our groups we have been mindful of feedback from the survey and you will have noticed that we have had speakers from Ministries as you requested - and I think that these lunches have been well received. We have been focusing the hosting of these through the relevant SIG head so we can open up relationships with the Minsters’ teams in order that we can use BBBF SIG heads as a conduit for member ideas and concerns. We will be formalising this more in the next quarter and will let you know how you can help and get involved.

Another focus we have as a group is to explore how we can support young Bahrainis to get work experience through our membership. Tom Reynolds from Trowers is spearheading this and we will outline this in more detail soon.

We plan to form a BBBF young business group - this will be headed by Reem Al Mahroos, Myrna Al Mehaiza and Cate Barbour who will send out a communication soon - again this will outline who they want to attract as members and how you can help to support their work.

Both of these initiative are in parallel to the work we are planning with the Bahrain Polytechnic team who look after the business masters programme. Students who do this need a real project to complete their studies - their work is excellent and I will be talking to Faisal Hassan and Alison Reynolds at the Polytechnic about getting two students to help me get BBBF SIG better resourced in terms of social media, PR and a rolling programme of events - more to come and exciting to get young people involved.

On a related matter we will be supporting Abdulellah Al Qassimi in his work for the 2012 Career Expo - over the three days that this is held in November this attracts over 12,000 young people - I will come back to you with details about how we are going to support this great event.

We are delighted to have Standard Chartered supporting our work - this will give us a more solid base from which to do our programme of events and will help us to be more active. There is more detail about this opposite so I won’t dwell on this here. Thanks very much to Daren Warner, Nimmi Kamal and Hassan Jarrar for their support so far.

Exciting times for us all - please let me know if you want to help me to organise our work - and if you want to help with the organisational effectiveness group, which is the group I run in addition to managing the SIG group.

Group Updates

Organisational Effectiveness The organisational effectiveness group held a meeting with the legal sig and with the Bahrain HR Forum - and this format worked well. This was about the labour law and had a very impressive attendance of members and potential members. The next meeting will focus on marketing - this was an area that you have asked for more information about, in particular marketing strategy - so we will find a panel and run a workshop with this topic.

Upcoming for Construction - Construction SIG are organising a hotel and leisure focused event for July looking to br ing together various special ists to give a panel based overview of this important sector. They wil l explore issues from a construction and development perspective as well as from a Bahrain tourism, cultural and business development perspect ive. Construct ion SIG hope this event will reach to other members other than those focusing on the construction sector.

and Security - After a busy start to the year the pace continues with the next scheduled meeting taking place at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa on Wednesday 20th June with a scheduled start of 15:00hrs. Security related companies are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to display their products at no cost at this event as all we ask is for a donation to our adopted charities which are the Royal Society of St George and the American Women’s Association. By way of a look forward our bi-annual Social Networking Gathering will be taking place at the British Club on Wednesday 8th August with a scheduled start of 19:00hrs. For a more in depth briefi ng with regards to both events please contact Tony Palys. [email protected]

and SIG ICT (Information & Communications Technology). - The ICT group is planning a meeting to discuss Internet Security. This was the topic of the speaker, Ahmed Al-Doseri of the TRA at a recent BBBF lunch. The subject then raised its head again when some ministry websites where hacked into. We will invite members and guests to a meeting and will have presentations of solutions to this very important problem.

and Legal - The Legal SIG has recently sent an email to members and contacts in relation to its proposed events for 2012 as well as requesting those interested in speaking opportunities to get in touch.

and Finance - A Financial Services SIG was held on May 30 in the Sheraton Hotel Awaki Ballroom. The speaker Simon Williams, HSBC’s Chief Economist for the Gulf gave his views of the GCC economies, present and future, with particular emphasis on Bahrain. and Youth - The Youth SIG is preparing to host a ’launch event’ to introduce members and contacts to the group’s role and objectives within the BBBF and the business community in Bahrain.

The Bahrain Brit ish Business Forum (BBBF) and Standard Chartered Bank today announced their three year partnership in promoting the BBBF’s Special Interest Groups, which focus on the fi elds of Legal, Organisational Effectiveness, Construction and Financial Services, Security & ICT. Standard Chartered’s affi liation with the BBBF will enable the SIGs to continue developing channels of communication for members helping them identify opportunities for business development in their specialised fi elds.

Mr. Hassan Jarrar, Chief Executive Officer for Standard Chartered Bahrain, presented the cheque to Mr. Khalid Al Zayani, BBBF Chairman, and commented: "Standard Chartered Bank is proud to be associated with the Bahrain British Business Forum (BBBF) in sponsoring the Special Interest Group platform. As the oldest bank in Bahrain, we are committed to supporting the economies success and societies in which we operate. This partnership is

one of the ways the Bank facil i tates global trade and investment corridors because as the world’s leading trade bank, with a footprint in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Standard Chartered is ideally placed to play a shaping role in this fast-moving environment."

Mr. Al Zayani commented: "As a UK bank and the first bank in Bahrain, Standard Chartered has demonstrated its commitment since 1920 to the development of business and local community here in Bahrain, and this partnership will help further facilitate trade between the Kingdom and the UK. The BBBF could not continue its valuable work without such support, and we are grateful to Mr. Jarrar and his team for recognising the contribution BBBF makes to Bahrain’s economy. We look forward to a long and mutually benefi cial relationship."

Each of the six BBBF’s Special Interest Groups hold four meetings per year focused on a speclialised topic, in addition to key

Do you remember these words of twelve months ago "Call it what you like but the "Arab Spring" is impacting on the Globe as government’s reaffi rm, or as we are still seeing in some cases, re-aligning their strategies and alliances in the Region and beyond". On the back of this Corporates were scrambling to consultants to review their business & security plans for the future as security concerns hit staff retention and recruitment to this very day.

If so my question to you, the reader, is did your company actually complete the review & update of their corporate and business continuity plans whilst at the same time look at their staff welfare and awareness by ensuring that there was a tried and tested Security Plan in place? Has the appropriate information cascaded down from the top to the bottom and then back to the top so as to ensure "buy in" and "duty of care" for one and all?

Maybe I should not hold my breath for those hopefully positive answers!! Of course the most important question is how it has affected you, & your quality of life….. Remember that we are here to advise where possible.

Region:The Region is as awash with deep emotions, instability, anger, misinformation & broken promises whilst at the same time aspirations, enlightenment, courage and hope prevails in the most strangest of places. Unfortunately the continued turmoil, so prevalent now on the streets of so many countries within the Region and beyond, is impacting on all economies with growth faltering, unemployment rising, and continued fi scal and external pressures compounding the present issues.

There is a very real risk that these developments could derail the change that is under way in these countries, and managing this risk from both a Security and Business perspective will need to be shared by the international community. Assistance

with elections and reforms has still some way to go resulting in economies such as tourism being particularly hard hit. So with that in mind always check you respective Embassies & Consulates travel advice including travel to Europe and the US.

KSA – Driving:Not much to say really but thanks to our colleagues for passing on the stats slides below.

BBBF Special Interest Group (Security)As you read this article we will have already entered the sixth month of 2012 where we continue at a pace that leaves us breathless. Since our last meeting at the Crowne Plaza on the 1st of February, which was mentioned in the spring edition, we have continued our assistance to events

such as the F1 Gulf Air Grand Prix, attendance at conferences such as the 3rd ASIS Middle East Conference in Dubai and orientation briefi ngs to both financial institutions and business’s alike.

We were also fortunate to attend various briefi ngs & events at the British & US Embassies which facilitated discussion on the current climate and how we can do better with our duty of care to the community and friends whilst at the same time enhancing our objectives in encouraging investment back into the country that we call home.

Formal Networking Gatherings continue. We had the April event at the Gulf Hotel by kind permission of the Deputy CEO & GM Garfi eld Jones ably assisted by his team. Our collective appreciation to one and all, especially Paul Donnell the Chief of Security & Safety & Louise Doyle.

Our Hotel Security Working Group (HWSG), headed by Edwin Guerzon, the Director of Loss Prevention at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Spa, continues to be an active group with training programs & workshops being prepared in readiness for the continued challenges of the

second half of 2012. Hotel Managers are encouraged to contact Edwin (pictured above centre) for further details and support at [email protected]

The next formal gathering is scheduled for the 20th

June 2012 which will take place at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Spa & Residence. Further details will be published closer to the event.

Finally the partnership with OSAC & ASIS continues to go from strength to strength which offers member’s access to expertise in all types and manners of Security & Risk from Corporate to Manned Guarding, whilst opening the door to Membership and Educational opportunities that may not have been available in the past; here in Bahrain. Links with IISS and AmCham continue to be developed.

As well as the activities mentioned above members

were also involved in the fi rst ever "America Week" which was launched on Sunday the 6th May by the U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain Thomas Krajeski.

He explained that the idea of "America Week" is to celebrate the longstanding friendship between the United States and Kingdom of Bahrain, and to highlight our strong cultural and economic ties. We also view "America Week" as an opportunity to explore new possibilities for collaboration in business, trade, the arts and other areas: w w w . A m e r i c a W e e kBahrain.com.

Events also included a reception to celebrate the 236th anniversary of the US Independence and the handover of command of NAVCENT/C5F/CMF from Vice Adm. Mark Fox to Vice Adm. John Miller who we hope to have as a guest speaker in the very near future.

ASIS Bahrain Chapter 276

The Annual General Meeting of the ASIS International Bahrain Chapter took place on Thursday lunch time at Bahay Kubo Restaurant in Manama and was attended by an enthusiastic crowd of 12 members and 2 guests. After the welcome, thanks, apologies and elections of the Chapter officers took place the election process begun. Since no nomination had reached the Committee by the 8th of February, the four outgoing offi cers were re-elected and will hold offi ce until the end of the year (31st

December 2012) so as to be in line with other chapters worldwide. The elected Offi cers for 2012 are:

§ Jean Perois, CPP,PSP, Chairperson

§ Devlin Zents, Vice Chairman

§ Andrew Deamer, CPP, Secretary

§ Rajinder Singh, Treasurer

The appointed Committee Offi cers who have wished to keep their positions are:

§ Adam Radicic,Membership and LawEnforcement Liaison

§ Glenn Harwood, ICT and Webmaster

§ Arvind Sharma, CPP, Newsletter Editor

§ Rajinder Singh, Legislative Rep

This election to the local chapter of a 37,000 security professionals worldwide organisation is the fi rst since the chapter was granted its

charter in February last year. This young chapter with 32 members is growing tremendously and has already organised a review for the major certification offered by ASIS, the CPP (Certified Protection Professional), the most sought after certification in the field of industrial security.

ASIS International welcomes all those who have a task to protect industrial and commercial assets, and all those who have a vested interest in security in general. Members from OSAC and the BBBF are of course welcome to join ASIS International in general and our Bahrain chapter in particular. There is obviously shared interest and preoccupations between these three organisations and a ‘rapprochement’ is on course. Thanks to the ubiquitous Tony Palys, MBE, ASIS International, the BBBF and OSAC will cooperate and develop closer ties in 2012. To that end we already have some of our members interacting with OSAC and BBBF on events and meetings. This trend will certainly grow with goodwill and commitment and a better understanding of the opportunities and value that these three entities can bring to the table. As presentations and workshops are on Chapter 276 programme for 2012, this means in practical terms that the BBBF and OSAC members will be able to attend ASIS Chapter 276 events, when feasible.

The Chapter 276 website will be on line within a few weeks. BBBF and OSAC

14 Fo rum 15Fo rum

members will be invited by email to discover it at the same time as the members of the 276 chapter. For those interested (as you do not need to be an ASIS member to sit for the CPP exam) we are thinking about starting a CPP review around mid-March depending on the interest manifested by prospective students. It will be a weekly meeting – on Wednesday evening most probably - during 12 weeks, with a lot of reading in between.

Interested? Please drop a line to Andy Deamer, our Secretary, [email protected] at the earliest.

Olympic Games

The Olympic Games in London take place between 27 July and 12 August 2012 and the Paralympics occur between 29 August and 9 September 2012. A useful website for details of the impact that the 2012 games will have in regards to transport and travel go towww.getaheadofthegames.com

The number of police offi cers & the various UK police forces that will contribute to the Olympic Games during the summer has been revealed by the Metropolitan Police Service. The 105-day operation begins with venues being searched before the games themselves are policed - followed by a reduced operation for the Paralympic Games.

Twelve forces in total are hosting sporting venues during the operation, with football and other sports being held outside the capital. On peak days 12,500 officers will police the games nationally with 9,500 in London alone.

Olympic Games – London 2012: Security & Safety

The government and police are working to deliver a safe and secure Games that London, the UK and the world can enjoy.

If you are attending, please bring as little as possible with you to Olympic and Paralympic events. You’ll need to go through airport-style security when you arrive at your venue, so the more you bring with you, the longer it will take you to pass through security.

There are strict rules on what can be brought into venues.

For example: You can take one soft-sided bag into venues – it should fi t under your seat or in your lap. However, for football venues there is a strict limit on bags so only very small bags are allowed into these venues.

The full list of prohibited and restricted items varies between venues, so make sure you check the requirements for your venue before you head to your Olympic or Paralympic event. These lists are currently being fi nalised and will be made available in the coming months. Refer to:www.london2012.com

Olympic Games – London 2012: Travel

Along with plenty of excitement and an incredible atmosphere, the Olympic Games will bring thousands of visitors to London and the UK. This means the transport system will be extremely busy – so if you’re going to a London 2012 sports event or ceremony, it’s important to plan and book your journey well in advance.

Summer Holiday Travel:

The heat of summer is upon us early this year and with that our thoughts focuses on the great "heat" escape but at least this "early warning" gives us more time to prepare. As Security at airports and hotels are cranked up around the world here are some travel safety tips that you may fi nd useful.

Travel Tips:

• Make sure you have a signed, valid passport and visas, if required.

• Ensure your passport has at least six months’ validity from your planned date of return. Some countries will refuse entry on arrival and some airlines will not allow passengers to board fl ights if their passport does not meet this requirement.

• Check the latest travel advice for your destination on your Embassy websites

• Familiarize yourself with the local laws and customs of the countries to which you are traveling.

• Make 2 photocopies of your passport identifi cation page. This will facilitate replacement if your passport is lost or stolen. Leave one copy at home. Carry the other with you in a separate place from your passport.

• Leave a copy of your itinerary with your family or friends at home so that you can be contacted in case of an emergency.

• Notify by phone or register in person with your embassy (UK on Locate) or consulate upon your arrival. Know their location and contact details and program them into your mobiles.

• Don’t leave luggage unattended in public areas.

• Don’t accept packages from strangers.

• Don’t be a target! avoid conspicuous clothing and expensive jewellery and don’t carry excessive amounts of money or unnecessary credit cards.

• In order to avoid violating local laws, deal only with authorized agents when you exchange money or purchase art or antiques.

• If you do get in some sort of trouble contact your respective consulate

Farewell

A fond farewell to two stalwarts of the BBBF SIG (S) and OSAC Partnership who were always at the forefrront of events, presentations and meetings alike. They are folks that we could always rely on and who brought professionalisim, value and good old fashioned common sense to any situation with a touch of humour that could be, and in most cases was, infectious. This was particuarily apprecaited especially in such situations that we have sadly seen

here in Bahrain in the past twleve to fi fteen months.

Our collective best wishes to you both and to your families for a wonderful adventure in your new posts and beyond. There will also be a few other farewells from the group of which I will report on in the Autumn edition.

The Group reported a strong revenue growth of almost 12% over the quarter, with most business units performing at or above expectations. Gross Profi t for the period crossed BD6m which was 19% above 2011. Despite a challenging environment, the group achieved a remarkable 61% growth in Net Profi t for the quarter, almost BD1 million ahead of the same period in 2011. This success can be attributed to operational changes during 2011 which have enabled the group to perform more efficiently, coupled with effective management of overheads which have resulted in

improved margins across the group.

The group’s continued conservative financial policies have positively infl uenced its available for sale investments over this period. Investment Income and Gain on Investments carried at fair value through Income Statement amounted to BD 0.32m compared to BD 0.19m recorded in 2011. Ms. Annie Rafferty, Travel Sales Manager within RCSI-Bahrain welcomed the Bizladies with a brief introduction about the RCSI-Bahrain Travel Department.

The second event in March, sponsored by the Movenpick Hotel, consisted of a workshop delivered in a coaching style, where participants were invited to experiment with their networking skills and knowledge through practical activities.

Entitled ‘Networking Know How’, the event discussed the essential elements of networking being agility, reciprocity and strategy. Attendees learned how to network, align networking activities with personal/organisational values and design a powerful introduction.

Dr. Clare, the facilitator, explained that "Effective networking is all about connection that’s authentic, reciprocal and strategic. Good networkers are agile and forward-thinking. They also ensure they keep their promises! This workshop was based upon a full day Coach Me Networking Know How course aimed at personal, professional and organisational development."

During the presentation, Amy Morgan said, "Bravery pays off. Whether we are speaking to clients, or to the general public. And bravery is not always going against the grain, but rather, being a ’rebel with a cause’. Being true to what you stand for is at the heart of happiness and success."

More than eighty years after the discovery of oil, the adventure continues with new ambitions in exploration, new initiatives in oil & gas fi eld development, and new global markets opening up with the completion of a number of key projects which fulfi ll most stringent environmental standards worldwide. With a track record of strong fi nancial performance & operational excellence, it is now entrusted with a series of major strategic investments worth billions of dollars which will, in coming years transform the Refi nery from merely world player to global leader with an expanded processing capacity and higher value product slate.

WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT PROJECT (WWTPP)Bapco, as part of its commitment to environment conservation, is implementing the construction of a new Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) at a total cost of US$120MM. This project is being executed under Bapco’s Environmental Strategic Plan and as a requirement of the General Directorate of Environment and Wildlife Protectorate (EWP). The syndicate funding Bapco’s Strategic Investment Program (SIP) required implementation of this environmental project. The new plant will provide secondary treatment to the Refi nery waste water that is received from the existing primary treatment facility. Currently the effl uent from primary treatment facilities meets EWP requirements after dilution with large cooling water streams of the Refi nery. With the new EWP regulations in place, Bapco would like to meet treated effl uent discharge standards

at the source itself. The new WWTP is based on a state-of-the-art 4-stage membrane bioreactor technology and for its size, it will be a fi rst of its kind in any Refi nery waste water treatment plant worldwide. WWTP will hopefully be completed in the 4th quarter of 2012.

STEAM TURBO GENERATORS STGA $106 million project to replace fi ve steam turbo generators in the No.2 Power Plant with two condensing/extraction type steam turbines is another key initiative of Bapco. This project marks a signifi cant step towards improving the reliability & operability of the power generation system in the Refi nery and other facilities. It will result in signifi cant maintainability improvement and hence cost savings, and most importantly will further enhance the

safety within the power plant. The project replaces vintage numbers 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 turbo-generators and associated auxiliaries with 2x10 megawatt steam turbo-generators with new housing and a new substation. The successful implementation of the STG project ushers into open new opportunities for further cooperation, particularly as Bapco moves forward with its plans beyond its current Strategic Investment Programme which addresses projects being developed under the Refi nery Master Plan and in its joint search with Nogaholding for new business and investment opportunities anywhere in the world, that will bring the highest return on investment for Bahrain.

REFINERY MASTER PLAN RMPBapco will complete its refi nery modernization master plan by 2018. The ambitious expansion plan would mean the refi nery's capacity going up from the present 260,000 to 450,000 barrels per day. The project involves upgrading several units which will convert black oil products to more valuable ones and improve energy effi ciency. Bapco will become one of the most competitive & sophisticated refi neries worldwide. Bapco has been the backbone of Bahrain's economy for the past 80 years. With this new investment Bapco will be much more stronger & competitive and continue to contribute to Bahrain's economy for many more decades to come. Bapco spent two years in preparing the master plan for the modernization of the $8 billion refi nery project. "This being the most crucial project, needs a peer review, which is seen as vital tool to assess the feasibility of the entire project and get a second opinion from a group of experts on the all vital aspect of each stage," the Chief Executive, Mr. Gordon Smith said. "Accomplishing gigantic tasks like modernization of the refi nery by implementing the master plan through 2018 will serve as a top priority. The refi nery project will be not an easy job but with the support of the team it will happen in time as conceived in the master plan of the refi nery modernization", Mr. Smith

Well summer is here along with the relentless heat that comes with it and I am sure you are all looking forward to your well earned summer breaks. I assume some will be heading to UK to attend the Olympic Games and others to Eastern Europe for the European Championship – wherever you are heading have a great time.

The Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen is now upon us with celebrations

planned all over the UK and abroad. Congratulations to Her Majesty on her long and successful reign and long may it continue.

Sadly, we have said farewell to HMA Sir Tom Phillips and Lady Anne and we all wish them well in their retirement. Our 40th AGM was held on 30 April and we are pleased to welcome Alexandra Robak and Al Jones to the committee. Zane Thirlwall decided not to stand for re-election after serving on the committee for several years – thanks to Zane for his contribution to the BBA.

It was good to see the F1 go ahead in Bahrain and hopefully it will prove to be a turning point for the economy which has suffered during the recent troubles. In contrast, Eastern Province continues to be busy with

Jubail 2, Ras Al-Khair and infrastructure projects moving forward at pace – the province is starting to look like one huge building site! Progress on Jubail, Ras Al-Khair and related projects was the subject of an interesting presentation at one of our recent monthly business dinners and left us staggered at the scale of the developments.

HMS Daring, one of UK’s new Type 45 destroyers, took a short break from Gulf patrol duties, made a visit to Jubail in May. Thanks to the Captain and crew for hosting a very pleasant reception on the fl ight deck for local dignitaries and

expatriate community.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we recently had to changes our ISP and as a consequence modify our web address slightly. Please note the new address below. If you have any ideas or suggestions for the BBA or need to contact us then feel free to call me directly, send an e-mail to our Secretary at [email protected] or at our website, www.bbaep.org

Think Local, the CSR driven initiative that was launched at Alosra late last year has been gaining momentum over the past few months. Those of you who are unfamiliar with Think Local, it is a concept that encourages people to opt for local products whenever they can and in turn support the economy. It can be considered a platform to showcase what the island has to offer as well as provide shoppers with fresher and healthier food options which have a lower impact on the environment.

The Alosra Facebook and Twitter accounts have received many messages from customers thrilled with this initiative that promotes

local Bahraini products. (If you haven’t already, go ahead and ‘like’ the Alosra Supermarket facebook page or follow them on twitter @Alosra_Bahrain)

Once Alosra perfected the Think Local product offering in store, they began to look at ways to externally push the programme. Not wanting to jump on the traditional advertising bandwagon of signboards, lamppost hoardings, mupis and print advertisements, the team tried to think of alternative forms of promoting Think Local, something that would set them apart from the crowd.

“After some serious brainstorming with the Alosra team and our design

Think Local – on the move!

agency we had a stroke of genius. Why not cover two of our six-wheeled trucks with the Think Local branding?” explains Yasmin Hussain, Corporate Social Responsibility Executive. “Our BLS trucks are like big empty canvases that travel the streets of Bahrain 365 days a year. By covering them in our unique and easily identifiable Think Local colours, we managed to create a winning mobile advertising solution for Alosra and the campaign. With traffic in Bahrain increasing on an almost daily basis, each truck gives us a greater chance of getting noticed. No matter what way you look at it, or even if you’re far away and can’t read it, you still know it’s a Think Local truck!”

Alosra, the fresh and friendly retail subsidiary of BMMI has signed a contract with Riffa Palms to be the anchor store at the multiuse retail center in Riffa Views. Set to open in early 2013, the new Alosra outlet will feature a wide selection of fresh produce, meat, fish and poultry, delicatessen, baked treats, and household goods. In addition, for those

days when convenience is what you need, the store will stock a line of ready-to-eat salads and sandwiches. With an eclectic mix of local and global brands, Alosra will ensure that a little taste of home is never too far away for its expat customers.

"This is part of Alosra’s wider strategy to expand its

business in Bahrain and the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia," said Jaffar Al Asfoor, General Manager, Alosra. “It is also a great opportunity for us to enter the Central Governorate of Bahrain; operating a branch within the Riffa Views community will also allow us to broaden our client base and cater to a greater mix of customers."

Business Monitor International’s (BMI) Q112 Bahrain Retail Report forecasts that the country’s retail sales will rise from an expected BHD0.46bn (US$1.22bn) in 2011 to BHD0.57bn (US$1.52bn) by 2015, boosted by a growing interest in Western styles of retailing and a steady rise in disposable incomes.

Bahrain’s nominal GDP in 2011 is forecast to be US$22.01bn, rising to US$27.96bn in 2015. Real GDP growth is expected to be 1.4% in 2012 as political and economic diffi culties persist. Average annual GDP growth of 2.8% is predicted by BMI between 2011 and 2015.

Statistics from the Ministry of Culture and Information’s tourism affairs division show that tourist arrivals rose by an average of 10-15% a year over the past three years.

In 2007, Bahrain attracted 5.5mn tourists, 4.9mn of them from other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries.

The annual Formula One (F1) Grand Prix in Sakhir has generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue since it became a fi xture on the racing calendar in 2004, and its reinstatement on the 2012 F1 calendar is good news for the retail sector.

Efforts to broaden Bahrain’s range of youth programmes and initiatives should be instrumental in preparing the younger generation for greater participation in the Kingdom’s economic development, according to the Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) HH Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Sheikh Nasser told Oxford Business Group (OBG) that the programmes, which include educational, youth empowerment and sporting initiatives, form a key component of Bahrain’s long-term economic development plan, the Economic Vision 2030.

His Highness, who is also a member of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) recognised

the importance of steering young people towards a more active role in society.

“Every project we pursue has some link, as young people form the cornerstone of any ongoing development,” he said. “The aim is to equip them with the sort of skills that will help

them succeed in the future and meet the demands of the local market in line with Vision 2030.”

He voiced his commitment to putting into practice key recommendations laid out in a report drafted for the King which highlighted concerns raised by young people during discussions held after the unrest in early 2011. “It is my responsibility to implement the solutions that we came up with,” he said. “We also received approval to create a youth fund to help with implementing these recommendations.”

The interview with Sheikh Nasser will appear in The Report: Bahrain 2012, OBG’s forthcoming guide on the country’s economic activity and investment opportunities. The Group’s report will include a detailed, sector-by-sector guide for foreign investors, together with a wide range of interviews with the most prominent political, economic and business leaders, including HE Dr. Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani, the Secretary General of the GCC and HRH Princess Sabeeka

bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) and Wife of HM The King.

Sheikh Nasser said Bahrain was keen to cement its reputation as a host destination for high-profi le sporting events which, he added, could be a key factor in driving growth in tourism. “Bahrain had the pleasure of hosting the fi rst ever 2011 GCC Games, which proved to be a great success. We are also very pleased to have hosted the 2012 Bahrain Formula One and look forward to hosting the 2013 Gulf Cup of Nations,” he said. “The economic impact of hosting such large-scale events is benefi cial for the Kingdom and creates additional job opportunities for young people.”

The Report: Bahrain 2012 will mark the culmination of more than eight months of on-the-ground research by a team of analysts from the Group, which will be published in the summer of 2012. The Report: Bahrain 2012 will be available complimentary to all BBBF members as an added benefi t of membership.

CCMI Services have announced that their highly effective pocket media product, which the company have operated for the past eight years in Bahrain under the name Castaway, will in future be branded as MegaCards. The company’s distinctive display stands in around 150 prime locations over

Megacards - The Free Information pocket media company

the island are now a familiar sight.

MegaCards is the sole operator in this niche direct advertising market – providing information free for residents, newcomers and visitors alike in pocket-sized cards which include a MiniMap along with various guides and mini-brochures

advertising local businesses and services. All cards are also featured in our website.

The sales team Kingsley Dodwell from New Zealand – but raised in Bahrain - and Susan Cook, from the UK, but now 27 years in the Middle East will be very pleased to speak to anyone interested in the service provided.

The company has built its reputation on personal service coupled with quality products and locations, and can promote your business either independently or as part of a bouquet including other advertisers.

The Manager of Megacards, Kingsley Dodwell said:

“MegaCards have some significant benefits over competing advertising media notably; that the cards are of high quality and designed to fit into pockets, purses and wallets so potential customers can retain them to refer to later; each card is able to carry a significant amount of information; they are retained in the displays round the country for a minimum of three months; individual company cards are all “Front-Page” as they have equal status in the displays and, oh yes, they are very competitively priced”.

East Innovations was recently selected to participate as an approved service provider in the Marketing Assistance Scheme Tasweeq which forms part of Tamkeen’s Enterprise Development Support Programme (EDSP). Through the provision of various business support services, the EDSP seeks to improve the performance of private sector businesses in the Kingdom in accordance with the goals of the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030.

Focussed on providing support in the development and implementation of effective marketing and communications strategies, Tasweeq is an invaluable resource available to small, medium and large enterprises across all industry sectors.

"We’re really pleased to

be a part of this exciting initiative which is not only great for the individual businesses involved but for Bahrain as a whole," said East Innovations Managing Director Mark Warman.

"Tasweeq provides a fantastic opportunity for business owners to make a signifi cant investment in the growth of their businesses without having to carry the financial burden on their own. The structure of the scheme means that businesses have the potential to realise great returns from a comparatively minimal outlay," he added.

Under the scheme, the Enterprise Development Support Agency (EDSA) will subsidise 80% of the total cost up to a maximum of BHD 15,000 for small enterprises and BHD 20,000 for medium and large enterprises for services

received from an approved service provider.

In addition, businesses can also benefit from the other four schemes under the EDSP namely I s t i s h a r a ( B u s i n e s s Development Scheme), Techania (Technica l Assistance Scheme), J a w d a ( Q u a l i t y Management Systems Scheme) and Tarweej (Growth Assistance Scheme).

"Having built my own business from the ground up I am well aware that it can be an expensive and overwhelming task at times. This scheme enables business owners to share the load with experienced professionals who can help them develop meaningful goals and then formulate marketing strategies to help them attain those goals," said Warman.

Warman also encourages business owners to check whether they qualify for the scheme. "There seems to be a common misconception about which companies are eligible to receive support from the EDSA and those in doubt should contact Tamkeen as the eligibility criteria is actually very broad."

Since its inception, Tamkeen’s Enterprise Development Support Programme has served over 1,500 business owners and contributed nearly BD 8 million, with 2,500 enterprises targeted to benefi t from the programme over the next 3 years.

Atkins’ former chief executive Keith Clarke delivered his Brunel International Lecture in Bahrain on behalf of the UK’s Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in March this year. His lecture was under the patronage of the Minister of Energy, Dr. Abdul-Hussain bin Ali Mirza and supported by the Bahrain Society of Engineers. The lecture, entitled “Beyond rhetoric – delivering a low carbon society”, set out Keith Clarke’s views on the challenges of tackling climate change from the point of view of the engineering design sector.

Keith Clarke is an environmental champion and was responsible for overseeing the development of Carbon Critical Design as part of Atkins’ response to climate change. His contribution to the engineering and construction industry was formally recognised with his inclusion in the UK New Year’s Honours List 2011, when he was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

During his lecture Keith said: "It’s imperative that we move beyond the rhetoric and into

a new results-driven era with urgency. Combating climate change requires a massive transformation of our infrastructure networks, in particular the urgent decarbonisation of energy generation, and if we don’t act now we risk seriously jeopardising our future quality of life.

Engineers have been devising theories and planning for the shift to a low-carbon society for several years now, but the time is up – we must now put the theory into practice. We have to shift the focus from intellectualisation and hypothesising to action and delivering results, and this must be driven from within industry."

The Brunel Lecture Series was established by the ICE in 1999 in memory of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of the world’s most respected pioneering engineers. Keith Clarke began his two-year term as the Brunel lecturer in May 2010.

The event raised more than BD26,000 to be donated to charities fi ghting sickle cell disease. The raft race was fi rst introduced during the

late 1970s and since then it has raised more than BD2 million and has helped numerous charities across the Kingdom.

our General Manager, Isabel Carter and Morad Khatiblou our Consultants, Paula Schroder, Yasmine Shakib, Mohammed Hasan and Ammar Al Sairafi the fabulous engine room of the business the Researchers! All of which had spent much time training for the event with the help of other organisations from across the Island, such as BAS and ALBA. In Talent2s two racing round, they were up against Kempinski Hotel and Trowers and Hamlin. Despite having an unfortunate start to the second heat where Reem, Morad and Mo almost didn’t get onto the raft, they gained their footing to work their magic in powering through the waters of Al Bander!! ‘We pulled it back though, through sheer

determination, great team work, focused mind and brute strength got us back in the driving seat!’ Reem commented.

Talent2 were praised on our fighting spirit coming in with very respectable times of 3.36mins on our first heat and 3.40mins on our second heat. A great day was had by all; unfortunately Talent2 did not come fi rst but enjoyed their participation and support of such an incredible, long standing, charity initiative. We hope to support many more events to come in Bahrain, as we believe in supporting our community and more importantly for showing Bahrain what it is really like to be "People to the power of 2"!!’

And Finally

Marking 60 years of The Queen’s reign, the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in the UK centred around an extended weekend on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.

The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. The only other monarch in British history to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897.

In the UK, highlights of the weekend included the lighting of over 4000 beacons around the country and the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant when over 1000 boats made their way up the Thames from Battersea to Tower Bridge.

The fl otilla’s jewel in the crown was the Royal Barge - Spirit of Chartwell - which was decorated with over 10,000 blooms, and carried The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh,

Wow -What a weekend

the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Millions of people lined the banks of the Thames in some typically atrocious British weather to watch the fl otilla pass.

Around the country an estimated 10,000 street parties brought friends and neighbours together for celebrations despite the rain. One commentator noted “There’s nothing we British like better than

an opportunity to display our “mustn’t grumble” hardiness.

On the Monday evening an incredible assembly of artists performed outside Buckingham Palace. Helping to make the whole thing possible was Gary Barlow whose anthem “Sing” is already heading towards the top of the music charts.

Pop veteran Sir Tom Jones joined other Knights of the Realm; Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Elton John & Dame Shirley Bassey to

serenade a crowd which fi lled the Mall and took over televison sets all around the country.

Star of the show however was HRH Prince Charles who closed the evening with a speech which he began with the phrase “Your Majesty... mummy”

As well as praising all the performers and artists he made special mention of over 600 technicians working behind the scenes as well as refering to Prince Phillip who had been taken to hospital earlier that day.

“Thank you” he said addressing the Queen, “For making us Proud to be British.”
