BBC Children in Need brings out the best in us. It’s our chance to shine, to step up, to do whatever we can to help change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people all across the UK.

It’s easy to think ‘my little bit won’t help’. The fact is, no contribution is too small, and true heroes know that if enough of us heed the call and work together, we can achieve truly great things.

So if you’ve always wanted to Be a Hero, now is your chance to shine. To join people up and down the country and do your bit by raising money and helping change children’s lives.

Meet Amy. She’s only nine, but she’s old beyond her years. That’s because she’s had to grow up fast to cope with the bullying she’s experienced. It’s been continuous, and it hasn’t been easy for her to stay positive.

Because of the bullying, Amy couldn’t play outside, so she used to spend a lot of time indoors and on her own. To stop this happening, a local befriending project stepped in.

The project matches children with positive role models. Amy was quickly paired with a befriender, also called Amy. Once a fortnight, they meet up and spend time together.

They’re a perfect team. Amy’s always wanted to learn to swim, and as her befriender Amy is a swimming teacher, she’s been able to learn. Amy gets to choose exactly what they do in these sessions, so she’s always trying out new things. Your fundraising has helped Amy to enjoy the outside world again.
