The strength of a school lies not in its size but in The qualitative combination of its educational programs The talent of its educators and The motivation of its students

Jacques J. Gendarme MBA – CHA Chairman Founder of BBI

Dear Student, Thank you for the interest you have shown in our institution.

In order to carve out a place in the world of work – a highly competitive world – it is vital to have excellent academic references. These references do not just help open doors to the best jobs, but also help students adapt to the rapid and constant developments in the sector.

As an educational establishment that focuses on higher education, our programs are based on the progressive acquisition of the necessary management skills. They open up the way for our students to follow diverse career paths and enable them to quickly adapt to the new economic, cultural and social challenges of globalisation.

Aware of the great changes globalisation causes in the professional world, our educative duty is to encourage a return to humanism and to make our students realise the importance of sustainable development and its prime importance in the hotel and tourism industry. That is why our programs, always highly innovative, include specific courses on Sustainable Hospitality Management, since it is both a factor of progress as well as a creator of employments. BBI is first and foremost a “School of Hospitality Business” with international dimension. Our strategy is based on being dynamic, open and involved in the "Knowledge Society" - the European vision of the future. Indeed, thanks to that vision, higher education is also benefiting from fantastic growth.

However, we have to recognize that it is increasingly difficult for students to make a choice from the wide range of programs on offer. Yet this is a crucial decision and a good starting point when taking it is to compare course content and results.

Our institution is particularly reputed for its educational innovation and, putting modesty on one side for a moment, our teaching stands out due to our constant search for excellence. Our results, in terms of student satisfaction, real professional openings and relations with the hospitality and tourist industry, prove that we are one of the top academic institutions for management studies. You are now about to make a choice that will affect the rest of your life.

By choosing BBI, you will be adopting our motto “Educatio Praemium Vitae Est” and you will begin an enjoyable program which will bring you great satisfaction, both professionally, socially and also on a personal level.

The World is waiting for Qualified Hospitality Managers

The hospitality industry is closely linked with the development of tourism worldwide. The sectors are similar in the sense that jobs in them are constantly changing in our market economy. Thanks to the constant development of the major international chains, the hospitality industry plays a particularly active role in this worldwide development and therefore offers (more than ever before) numerous employment opportunities.

In spite of this expansion, there is a serious lack of qualified managers. Managers, who are capable of responding to the new challenges, are needed for this high-growth economic sector.

The hospitality industry is subject not only to the changing requirements of an increasingly cosmopolitan clientele, but also to the major changes in consumer lifestyles and the constant progression of technology. During the past decade, jobs have undergone considerable changes, in line with the previously quoted developments, and this is even more the case in the field of management.

Jobs now encompass highly sophisticated tasks, and managers in charge of these companies are now required to have a very advanced level of studies. In order to progress down this path, men and women must be prepared, trained and introduced to increasingly complex roles, and the inclusion of economics and social sciences in academic programs has become an absolute must.

The professionals of tomorrow must show not only their aptitude for managing individuals and teams, mastering all the management techniques and setting out objective sales criteria. They must also resolve problems as and when they occur, acquire sound financial analysis capacity, strategic leadership and also understand the meaning of customer service.

Combining European hospitality traditions and innovative management techniques from the English-speaking world, BBI offers a new study concept to students who wish to begin their careers in international hospitality.

We have a two-pronged teaching philosophy: on the one hand, we develop the operational expertise that students need to be successful and on the other we enable our students to develop the necessary strategic and management skills which will enable them to become talented, effective and successful managers.

You will gain great satisfaction if you take the decision to make your career in this exciting international industry. You will not only have an enjoyable lifestyle but you will also experience, through travel, new cultural and social horizons; something which few other professions can offer.

Your success will be our success!

Welcome to the World of BBI Hospitality Management Innovation

Pr. James. Gendarme MA – CHE Director Executive Board

Dear Student,

In Belgium, BBI is currently the only higher education management school with teaching carried out in English, specialising in the training and development of international hospitality managers.

We attach great importance to our tradition of pluralism and tolerance. Our policy is to actively support the concept of equal opportunities for each student. No application will be rejected on the basis of discrimination which is legally prohibited by human rights law such as discrimination based on race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, beliefs, sex or disabilities.

Classes reflect our desire to infuse real expertise into the field of hospitality management, and to adapt to the requirements of the industry. They focus on theoretical and practical learning, acquiring methodologies and languages, an introduction to basic and operational research, and, thanks to our partnerships with companies, real-life case studies.

That is precisely because hospitality management is changing so quickly, that in addition to teaching this discipline; we help each student to develop their own sense of initiative, which in turns generates innovation and creativity, while refining their skills as a true leader who is capable of facing up to varied situations.

In order to do this, we ensure that our classes are in line with what is happening in the industry. Every year, professional placements are included in the training program, enabling our students to develop in an atmosphere as close as possible to the daily reality of life in a company and the world of business.

One of BBI’s main characteristics is the team spirit which reflects daily life in the service industry. The organization, teaching philosophy and the relationship between teachers and students are all built on dialogue. This favours open discussions and contributes to and strengthens the strong cohesion needed for team working.

Besides, the hospitality background of its former students has become more and more valued in other areas of economic life, and BBI graduates can be found not only in management positions in the greater hotels all over the world, but also in management consultancies, and in marketing, sales or HR positions in companies which are not directly linked to hospitality.

Finally, BBI’s close relationship with the national and international hotel chains enables our students to begin their professional careers very quickly. Many of our students have already found employment before they obtain their degrees.

PREVIOUS STUDIES IN THE FIELD OF HOSPITALITY

All prospective students studying at another institute, having completed one or several years of higher education, may request study dispensations or study credits in advance of their studies at BBI. Such requests may be made with

respect to one or several courses or even for one complete year of study and must be formalised in a letter addressed to the pedagogic board, prior to the student’s enrolment at the institute.

Page 8: BBI - BROCHURE 2011

PREVIOUS STUDIES IN OTHER FIELDS

All prospective students, having completed one or several years of higher education, may request to be exempted from one or several specific courses. This request must be put in writing and addressed to the pedagogic board prior to the

student’s enrolment at the institute. The candidate must attach to the letter all documents attesting to his/her success in the subject matter or courses from which he has requested to be exempted.

THE TEACHING STAFF

BBI’s teaching is carried out by professors, certified hospitality educators, qualified lecturers and instructors, who are recruited for their professional skills and teaching ability. The objective for the teaching staff is to simplify and as much as possible give concrete expression to complicated theoretical notions, to adjust teaching to the level of understanding of all the students and above all to encourage students to think outside the box by developing their own way of thinking. This is why each class is given by subject specialists. As members of different professional organizations and university faculties, our teaching staffs follow continuous professional training

programs in order to keep them up to standard, both theoretically and practically, and this guarantees their seriousness, effectiveness and professionalism as regards new technologies and the latest work techniques. Their skills are periodically examined by the accreditation body. Their teaching qualification (CHE – Certified Hospitality Educator) is renewed every five years, following examinations. In addition, with the aim of supplementing and diversifying its teaching, BBI calls on numerous well-known professionals and foreign lecturers to share their experiences with the students in the form of talks or case studies which add to the theoretical classes.

One of BBI’s main characteristics is

the team spirit which reflects daily

life in the service industry.

The organization, teaching

philosophy and the relationship

between teachers and students are all

built on dialogue.

This favours open discussions and

contributes to and strengthens the

strong cohesion needed for team

working.

Dedicated Faculty!

INTERACTIVE TEACHING METHODS

BBI requires students to participate in the learning process-to think, to contribute, and to grow. Interactive classroom methods are our tools toward this end. When students participate, the professor enhances their interest and improves their retention. Interactive activities involve interaction among students and the use of available resources and activities to enhance the learning process.

The professor's role includes identifying the performance desired and the conditions for completing the activity. Once the activity begins, the activity becomes student driven. The professor then assumes the role of coach and monitor. At the end of the activity, the professor's role becomes that of debriefing and identifying the relevance of the exercise.

Page 9: BBI - BROCHURE 2011

QUALITY ASSURANCE The institute gives utmost importance to quality rather quantity and has structured its operations with the spirit of total quality management (TQM) based on the EFQM Excellence Model and its eight fundamental concepts. Mainly, BBI has adopted as a general concept the eight fundamental principles of “EXCELLENCE” as defined by EFQM in its operations and management, such as; results orientation, customer focus, leadership and constancy of purpose, management by processes and facts, people development and involvement, continuous improvement, innovation and

learning, partnership development, and corporate social responsibility. BBI has implemented a formal, structured and documented an internal quality assurance system, named QUALITY CARE. In the understanding of TQM in BBI, quality assurance (QA) means the implementation of procedures, processes and systems used to manage and improve the quality of its education and all other activities. The purpose of BBI’s Quality Assurance System (QAS) is to ensure the relevance, goal-orientation, quality, and continuous assessment and improvement of the activities.

Page 10: BBI - BROCHURE 2011

QUALITY MODEL

BBI has chosen to organize its management and operational structures as well as its educational programs of study on a European Total Quality Model. This approach is based on the “EUROPEAN FOUNDATION OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT” (EFQM) concept, of which the

European platform for educational quality has developed a system applicable to the higher educational sector. This system is a quality method of self-evaluation, as continuous process, of the institution and its programs of education.

EDUCATIONAL LICENCE

The Educational Institute Foundation of The AH&LA (USA)

BBI has been awarded by the prestigious TEDQUAL accreditation from the United Nations World Tourism Organization and its THEMIS Foundation, which is the international hallmark of excellence in tourism and hospitality management education.

It represents the highest standard of achievement for tourism & hospitality schools worldwide. The World Tourism Organisation and its WTO-THEMIS Foundation have developed the “TedQual Certification System” (Tourism Education Quality) with the aim of contributing quality and efficiency to the application of the rules of the game in the Hospitality and Tourism Education.

The “TedQual” is a Quality Assurance for higher education available to all teaching institutions, from any country in the world. By establishing “TedQual” WTO aims to set a quality assurance system so that gradually, standardization is obtained in terms of management, structure and organization.

The “TedQual” takes into account that the Institution should seek competitiveness within a frame of reference through the same market criteria which would be applied to any private entity, and which is perfectly compatible with the objectives of a public nature.

The methodological framework of the “TedQual” is based on Total Quality which provides the means to detect gaps between the needs/expectations of professionals and output of the education programmes and systems. It also facilitates the subsequent adjustment of methods and contents to the real demand for human resources.

BBI has an exclusive educational licence for Belgium and G.D. of Luxemburg. BBI’s overall teaching programs are accredited by “The Educational Institute of The American Hotel and Lodging Association USA” (EI).

This foundation is recognized worldwide as being the principal leader in the field of teaching and professional training for international hotel management. “The Educational Institute” is recognised by the “Department of Education” and accredited by “The American Council of Education ACE” of the “US Department of Education”.

In partnership with several universities, including “Michigan State University”, E.I. is an educational research powerhouse and provides a crucial link between hospitality management university teaching and the professional world of international hospitality management.

The EI is present in more than 120 countries and in more than 1.000 teaching establishments. With a view to responding to the highly specific needs of the international hotel sector, the institute has integrated into its programs modules edited by “The Educational Institute”.

The EI modules determine, in part, the attribution of the BBI degree. They correspond directly to the USA study credits for hospitality studies. A certificate for passing a module is given nominally to each student. This entitles students to continue their studies at American or European universities which are in partnership with BBI.

Page 13: BBI - BROCHURE 2011

DOUBLE DIPLOMA & COLLABORATION AGREEMENTS

For the benefit of its students BBI has entered into various types of collaboration agreements:

SAVONIA UNIVERSITY (SAVONIA UAS) of Applied Sciences - Finland

“Tourism and Hospitality Department”

DD Core modules: The program of each institution offers a high number of similarities which facilitates their equivalence. In order to offer to the students a qualitative adequacy of the programs, the pedagogic board of each institution selected in common a number of CORE SUBJECTS in each programs. The methodology of the CORE SUBJECTS is based on the existing syllabi and will be teach in each institution by the professor titular of the module.

COOVI - CVO - ELISHOUT Brussels

Since 2008 BBI has signed an exclusive collaboration and synergy agreement with the ELISHOUT which is a public vocational school of the “Flemish Community”. This collaboration intends to give BBI’s students the opportunity to follow a special program of Culinary Art and Food Production, which is part of BBI’s second year curriculum of the undergraduate program. The course has 60 hours of practice and is delivered at ELISHOUT Brussels campus, using their kitchen facilities under the authority of a “Chef de Cuisine”. Students having successfully passed the examination obtain an official certificate from ELISHOUT.

LYCEE TECHNIQUE HOTELIER « Alexis HECK » DIEKIRCH - LUXEMBURG

LTH and BBI are both members of the AEHT Association and intend since 1996 to collaborate in synergy with the objectives to build on the internationalization of hospitality education; increase educational opportunities for students; preparing them for further education; new networks and stimulating interactions between educational members; enlarged their respective networks and stimulating interactions with other educational members of AEHT.

The European Commission drew attention to joint programs and degrees and expressly calls upon the higher education sector to increase the development of modules, courses and curricula at all levels with “European” content, orientation or organisation. This concerns particularly modules, courses and curricula offered in partnership by institutions from different countries and leading to a recognised “DOUBLE DEGREE”. This commitment had already been highlighted in the “Bologna Declaration” which explicitly set as an objective the promotion of the necessary European dimension in higher education. Double Degrees are an important part of international cooperation in higher education. It means a degree program which is developed and provided by two institutions in cooperation and which awards two degrees.

SAVONIA UAS & BBI decided to collaborate further on since the successful existing “bilateral agreement” established in 2005, based on students and professors exchange. With the objective to develop further international opportunities for their students and to strengthen the international ties between the two institutions, BBI and SAVONIA UAS, have decided to enter into an agreement for the establishment of a DOUBLE DEGREE for the Bachelor program. The term DD refers to an arrangement agreed on by both institutions in which the student completes the studies agreed in SAVONIA’s degree program as well as in BBI’s degree program. This combination leads to a degree at both higher education institutions. This agreement permits BBI students, upon the successful fulfilment of the requested conditions the opportunity of receiving by a DD, both the academic degree of SAVONIA UAS and the legal effects of the corresponding academic degree at the partner institution (BBI) by equivalence.

Applying for the DD registration is facultative; it’s of the student choice. Students registered as degree candidate in the BBI and SAVONIA UAS shall have access to the DD specific program. The selection of students embarking on a DD is made at the home institution. Students shall register at the partner institution only for the parts of the study program which will be carried out under the responsibility of the partner institution (one semester at the host institution – 60 ECTS).

Page 14: BBI - BROCHURE 2011

TESTING KNOWLEDGE THROUGH CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

In order to enable both the students, lecturers and instructors to regularly evaluate how well students have assimilated the different subjects, numerous knowledge tests, practical evaluations (Case Study

Analysis), individual and group assignments are spread out throughout the year. This requires participation from students in class, as well as sustained study outside of class.

ADDITIONAL EVENTS

During both courses, BBI organises short study visits, lectures, visits to different hotels and businesses which are of particular interest, as well

as the European institutions, in order to develop students’ general knowledge.

GRADUATE PROGRAM CHART MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL SUSTAINABLE HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

Globalisation and the required adaptation of our society to the new environment that it creates remains a serious and complex challenge. What can one say about the new challenges that are already part of our daily life: climate change caused by our indiscriminate overconsumption, the social and economic crisis caused by a lack of ethics and good governance in the management of large companies. These elements contribute without doubt to the global unrest that we are experiencing.

Conscience of the big changes that this causes, both in our daily lives and also in the professional world, our educative duty is to encourage a return to humanism and to make our students aware of the prime importance of sustainable development in the hospitality industry. That is why our master degree, “Sowing the Seeds of Change”, develop all aspects on environmental and sustainable management systems, since it is both a factor of progress as well as a creator of employment.

Bachelor First Year 1620 hours of study including 12 weeks Basic Operational Internship (3x60=180 Credits) Second Year 1620 hours of study including 12 weeks Advanced Operational Internship Third Year 1620 hours of study including 12 weeks Management Internship

Master Two Years 2980 hours of study including 12 months Advanced Management Internship (2x60=120 Credits)

The number of hours per year is based on the ECTS criteria in the form of a numerical value allocated to each course unit (for a total of 60). They reflect the quantity of work each course unit requires in relation to the total quantity of work necessary to complete a full year of academic study at the institution, that is,

lectures, practical work, seminars, tutorials, fieldwork (internships), private study – in the library or at home – and examinations or other assessment activities. The grading system is based on the adequacy of the institutional grading system and the ECTS promoted by the European Community (Bologna Process).

LANGUAGE TEACHING

The institution having an international orientation, the courses are fully taught in English, while some seminars may be given in other languages depending of the visiting lecturer’s nationality (always translated in English when necessary). English language is the undisputed “Lingua Franca” of the world. It is the mean of communication within and between

international corporations, and it is the language of choice in most publications devoted to the art of management, economics and business administration. As our teaching programs are carried out in English, students should have good understanding of the language to start their studies. That’s why each candidate has to undergo a language assessment.

For those students whose mother tongue is not English, the level of English (as a second language) acquired during their high school education is generally sufficient for the beginning of the undergraduate program. The program is structured so as to ensure that fluency in English is reached progressively by participating in all the courses. This is why our students master written and spoken English by the end of their studies.

OTHER LANGUAGES

In accordance with the principles laid out in the Bologna Process, studying languages is part of “Transversal skills and knowledge development”. As the institute prepares the students to join the international business world, and recognizing the importance of communication, with future customers and colleagues from many parts of the world, BBI places a strong emphasis on language

skills within the programs offered. There are no prerequisites for taking language courses. Classes are streamed and put the emphasis on oral and then written communication. Depending of the number and the language abilities of the candidates, the following options are offered: Dutch, French, Spanish, German, Chinese and Japanese.

STUDENT EVALUATION OF TEACHING QUALITY

Our institution systematically runs evaluations of teaching and teaching staff quality. At the end of each academic year, all students are invited to fill in an evaluation questionnaire. In this way, the teaching staff and academic board obtain feedback and can make the appropriate improvements.

FOCUSING ON QUALITATIVE STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

BBI’s main objective is not just to train the students in excellence in the field of hospitality management, but also to enhance their personal development by offering them the opportunity to

evolve and work in an international environment. With a student body of 35 nationalities, our students are one of our institution’s key strengths. Coming from different backgrounds and cultures and with diverse experiences, they are all highly motivated

and have a real calling to work in hospitality industry. Students are immediately immersed into an international environment as they rub shoulders with many different nationalities from the beginning of their studies. Thanks to this extraordinary cultural diversity, our students learn to know, understand, respect and live

alongside others. Based on this multicultural environment, BBI facilitates the blossoming and personal development of its students, in three main areas: THE INDIVIDUAL Developing the individual’s capacity to communicate, to welcome guests with enthusiasm, to lead, motivate and train a team as well as to manage their responsibilities with a spirit of professional excellence. TECHNIQUES Enabling students to fully master management methods and practices and enabling them to concretely apply this knowledge in all company job areas. A SPIRIT OF CREATIVITY Developing students’ ability to be open to the world, to take initiatives and to detect, accept and manage change, qualities which are vital for both future managers and company directors.

Students will study strategic leadership in detail, while consolidating their knowledge of the direct aspects of company management. This strategic leadership training will prepare each student for the numerous professionals challenges with which they will be faced and for which concerns about short-term profitability, market share and long-term planning, are key factors for success.

Managing daily operations, comparing marketing strategies, managing property and assets, and international development, are just a few examples of subjects that they can choose to study in depth as options, with teaching provided by subject specialists. Thanks to case studies and different real life on-the-ground projects, they will learn to analyse the macro and micro-economic environments. This will enable them to consider different situations with the eye of a professional decision maker, who is capable of resolving problems, while harnessing the human and financial resources available in order to achieve the company’s objectives. Students will also study the effects of globalisation as well as how to manage change and will discover the specific challenges they pose for businesses. They will be able to develop their knowledge of foreign languages. In addition, our “successful communication” classes – both oral and written – will polish their skills as true leaders who are capable of facing up to varied situations in different cultural contexts. Finally, based on a subject of interest and linked with your chosen professional sector, students will also have the opportunity to demonstrate their research, analysis and presentation skills by writing a dissertation in the master program.

STUDENT SERVICES HELPING STUDENTS TO BUILD THEIR CAREERS

Our careers service aims to help each student to look for jobs and to select companies, as well as advising our students on what they need to do to achieve their objectives. BBI helps students

prepare for their future careers by organizing careers events every year in partnership with leading international companies.

FINANCING STUDIES

Students wishing to finance their studies themselves, by means of a bank loan, are able to make inquiries concerning the procedure to be followed via the institute. The conditions for such financing are the competencies of the bank alone, with which the student deals directly, without the intervention of BBI.

BBI is collaborating with “ING Bank – VIP EXPAT Financial Services”, and advice on study loan of general baking matters can be obtained by contacting [email protected].

General information can or EXPAT services can be found at www.ing.be/expat

LODGING NEAR THE CAMPUS

Students wishing to find accommodation in the vicinity of the institute can enquire as to the procedure to be followed via the institute. The lodging of students is managed by an independent organisation and an annual contract

between the student and this organisation is drawn up.

The financial conditions depend on the type of accommodation.

WORKING IN BELGIUM

By Belgian law, all registered students for a full academic year are allowed to have a “Student Job” to support part of their living cost and creates the opportunity to introduce the student to the working life in Belgium. Students have the choice between 2 types of “Student Jobs”:

1. A maximum of 46 days/year without working permit and no income taxes to pay.

2. Above that limit the student needs a “Work Permit C” and will pay income taxes

In two cases the work is only allowed during the student’s free time, meaning outside normal school hours (During weekends, school holidays and evenings only).

To facilitate student’s researches to find a job, BBI has entered into an agreement with an employment agency for temporary staff.

This latest will select the best possible job for the student in accordance with his/her free time possibilities; and support him/her with the legal and administrative documents requested.

Hospitality as Global World Is BBI’s philosophy!

COMPUTER RESOURCES

Students have full access to the computer-room during the class open days and even during holiday periods (schedule on the student board). Hands-on experience is important in understanding computer software and hardware requirements. Students can get this experience in the computer-room where they can create all documents needed for their class assignments, or test the programs they write to solve different business problems and/or personal documents. Computers offer full access to internet and own e mail account and each student received upon request a login giving high-speed access to BBI web page. Application programs are accessible

through a Microsoft Windows-based menu. Any technical problem occurring with computers should be immediately reported to the General Administrator in charge of IT. Personal Computer Students having their own laptop have internet and e mail free access through WIFI technology almost anywhere on campus. Computer Fidelio Laboratory A separate laboratory equipped with specific laptop program is at the student’s disposal for the course BA 1134 related to “Fidelio Property Management System”. This system simulates a true hotel environment from front desk to night audit.

LIBRARY RESOURCES

Library holds more than 2200 volumes, books, journals and periodicals in English and various other languages to serve the student’s research needs; and the number is increasing all the time. Students have full access to books and other materials available, during the class open hours and even during holidays period (schedule on the student board), provided they abide by the

regulations. For the magazines and newspapers they are shelved in open stacks in the cafeteria. Users may obtain assistance from any faculty member, who can provide guidance and specialist advice on individual subjects of study, or by computer (intranet) to consult the library directory available by references: titles, authors, categories, etc

PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIPS

Internships are a vital supplement to teaching and are an integral part of the study programs. They are compulsory and are mainly carried out in major international hotel chains, depending on national and international availability. The internship also serves as a valuable international experience for a student seeking global hospitality career. Over 80% of BBI students carry out their internships abroad. Each year, they take this opportunity to enrich their professional and personal experience. The length of the internships (worldwide) is as follow:

Bachelor 3 years = 3x12 weeks

Master 2 years = 12 months

The internships are structured around a progress and supervision plan established by the institute, the details of which are to be found in the student’s internship notebook entitled “TRAINEE

MANUAL”. This contains a progress-guide program, allowing an objective evaluation of the work carried out by the student during his/her internship. In this way, students remain in constant contact with BBI and inform it throughout their “Trainee Manual”, on the results of their work plan and progression. At the end of the training period the students establish also a report to show how they have developed. BBI helps each student to select the most appropriate internship by organizing several hotel visits as well as “Career Days”. The internship agreement, signed by the student, the hotel and BBI is established in accordance with the European Training Student Charter as drawn up by HOTREC; this body represents professionals from the different national federations.

INTERNSHIP ALOWANCE

During the student’s internship period, the hotel company will grant the same working conditions to the Trainee such as applied to the staff of his establishment; in particular the supply of warm

drinks and meals during the working hours. The enterprise may also grant an allowance to the Trainee, and if it is the case the refund of local transportation expenses.

Editorial May 2010 – THE BULLETIN Brussels

The most common questions asked by candidates Pr. Georges UBBELOHDE MA.CHE - Director of Education

Q. Concerned about unemployment, more and more young people are leaving behind their secondary school desks to receive training in order to have a guaranteed path to a job and career opportunities. “We do not have the statistics for Belgium, but as a reference, we can use an interesting study carried out in France in May 2009 on 500 secondary school students: 40% of them listed employment opportunities and job perspectives at the top of their criteria for choosing vocational training. These students have a very clear idea of their future. We are struck by the detail of their career plans when we ask them where they see themselves in five years. Many mention the deluxe hotel industry and large hotel conglomerates, because they have an international presence.”

Q. Does the international hotel industry really have a future? “The constant development of the international hotel industry, in line with our increasingly globalised world is, in fact, unemployment-proof. Our young graduates, who are vocal about their goals, contribute significantly to changing the outlook on this promising sector. Hotel management schools compete more and more with business schools in terms of general subjects while also providing a background in the culture of the profession. For the start of the 2010 school year, our institute has seen a growing number of candidates coming from humanities backgrounds, as well as young university graduates looking for additional training (MASTER). Finally, thanks to our professional network, 10 to 12% of our students sign employment contracts before they even receive their diplomas. In fact, there is an apparent serious lack of qualified managers who are capable of responding to the new challenges of this fast-growing sector of the economy.”

Q. We have seen that in terms of career opportunities, a growing number of young people seek an environment in which travel and cultural experiences take on increasing importance. Training that favours travel and experiencing new cultures is our cornerstone and is the crux of everything we offer. In a world with profound lifestyle changes, the incentive to choose an international career makes international training a necessary step. In this regard, BBI includes students of 32 different nationalities who are part of a cosmopolitan environment that promotes an international ambiance. We also develop student exchange programs through a network made up of colleges and universities in Europe, America, Asia, and Australia. Each year, paid and unpaid internships around the world are included in our programs. After graduating and acquiring the necessary international skills, each student’s own personal preference will determine whether to choose a managerial position in one country over another. Their career progresses naturally with promotions and changes in large international hotel chains. Hence our attempts to keep this international field from

being confused with the HORECA sector in Belgium.

Q. Your institute offers specialized training. Doesn’t that limit students’ nights out? “Schools that specialize in hotel management, such as BBI, today are business schools in their own right. We train our students in the latest operational management techniques, but with an orientation geared towards marketing, finance, and human resources in order for them to develop as talented managers for the large hotel groups that are always looking for top candidates, as well as for the service industry and commercial sectors. We help students develop a sense of initiative, all while honing their skills as true leaders capable of handling a variety of situations

Q. Compared with traditional hotel schools, what type of higher training do you offer? “Founded in 1990, BBI is above all a dynamic “Business School” of international acclaim, with an open spirit and committed to the European vision of the future: “the society of knowledge.” Our programs are geared towards the progressive acquisition of the necessary skills of management science and they facilitate fast adaptation to the new economic, cultural, and social challenges of globalization. BBI is currently the only institute of management training in Belgium specialized in the training of international hotel management executives in which both the BACHELOR and MASTER programs are in English. Our programs have received the prestigious certification awarded by the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations. This distinction was made possible by a higher institution of hotel management training that boasts the highest quality for an institution of its kind in the entire world.

Q. Why has BBI chosen to teach its courses in English? Our courses are taught in English in order to put into practice one of the principles of the “Bologna Process”, the enhancement of transferrable skills and knowledge through the study of languages, as promoted by the European Union. English is the undisputed lingua franca in the business world. Through our educational plan, our instruction is designed to ensure improvement in the language through our materials, which first prioritise comprehension, then oral and written communication. This is why our students are able to perfectly master written and spoken English at the end of their studies, considering that the foundation of knowledge acquired in secondary school (in terms of a second language) is generally sufficient to begin the first year of study.”

In conclusion Our educational philosophy includes two axes of development: First, the operational expertise necessary for success and second, the necessary skills in strategy and management for students to develop into effective, high-performing, and talented managers.
