SUMMER COURSES 2018 Orff Schulwerk Certification Program

Introduction to Orff, Levels I & II with Cathy Bayley, Pam Hetrick, Joe Berarducci and Susie Green

Certified Levels Courses are the primary way to receive in-depth training in Orff Schulwerk in Canada and are recognized internationally and endorsed by Carl Orff Canada.

* Clinician Biographies available online at bcorff.ca

Introduction to Orff Schulwerk provides a foundation in Orff Schulwerk and offers insights into bringing music and movement into the daily life of children. It is designed to give music specialists and those who can read and write music an introduction to the many elements which comprise the Orff philosophy of music education. Participants will explore a creative approach that integrates speech, singing, movement, improvisation and instrumental technique on pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments as well as recorder. Introduction to Orff runs Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm, August 20th– 24th. Orff Levels 1 & 2 enhance and challenge personal musicianship as well as teaching skills. Levels 1 & 2 run Monday through Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Each course includes daily: 3 hours of Basic Orff instruction, 1.5 hours of movement, 1 hour of recorder and 1 hour of special topics.

2, 4, 8, 16...an Orff Circle August 20-24, 2018 9:00-4:30 Masterclass with Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney In this masterclass, participants will Sing, Move, and Play the Orff way, through sequenced musical experiences with one of Canada's leading Orff magicians! Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney will model masterful teaching, while sharing new ways to integrate music across the curriculum, in ways that will engage students in exploration, creation, reasoning and

reflection. Drawing on her vast experience with ELL students and those with special needs, she will share approaches to differentiation that are needed in every classroom. Participants will be expected to have musical training and teaching experience, however, no Levels courses are required to register. 2018-2019 WORKSHOPS Orff and the New Curriculum

The new BC Curriculum challenges Music teachers to connect students with "history, heritage, culture, and community, fostering an understanding of the diverse values and perspectives of global, Aboriginal, and Canadian societies."* While the freedom to explore music from many directions, including an Aboriginal perspective, and the opportunity to use our creativity as teachers, is very welcome, it can also be a daunting task. Many are left asking themselves, "But what should I teach the kids on Monday?" Join us for two workshops that will help to answer that, and many more questions. In the tradition of Orff workshops, we will be learning through doing and will come away with a wide range of materials that can be used the following week! *From BC's new Arts Curriculum

Essential Learning In Music . . . clarifying the Curriculum!

with Joe Berarducci September 22, 2018 9:30am - 3:00pm

Queen Elizabeth Elementary, 921 Salter Street, New Westminster

Join master Orff teacher, Joe Berarducci, as he helps us clarify the scope and sequence of elementary music education. Joe will help us to see the bones of the curricular content we need to share with our students through the wonderful and engaging materials we have grown to love from his fantastical mind! He will take us on a thoughtful journey from musical infancy to conscious musicianship. Approaches to evaluation will be shared along the way. Participants will come away feeling more prepared to lead their own students on this magical journey into the World of Music.

First Peoples Principles of Learning in the Music Room

January 19, 2019 9:30am - 3:00pm Queen Elizabeth Elementary, 921 Salter Street,

New Westminster

As we dive into applying the nine First Peoples Principles of Learning across the curriculum in BC, many Music teachers struggle more than most, as they try to respect the ninth principle - "Learning involves recognizing that some knowledge is sacred and only shared with permission and/or in certain situations." During this workshop we will explore the many ways in which we naturally apply the principles of learning when we engage in the Orff approach to music education. We will use materials that respect and address the nine principles, including authentic First Nations music and activities that can be used by music teachers. Participants will come away with a greater understanding of the interconnectedness of good Orff teaching and the First Peoples Principles of Learning. They will also have materials that they can use to deepen their students' experience with local First Nations' music that honours the ninth principle.

Spring Special - Orff Festival plus Dance, Drum and Drama!

COC members should keep an eye out for invitations to our Orff Festival in the Spring of 2019. Four Orff ensembles, led by our members, will be invited to bring their students to York House School, where they will participate in dance, percussion ensemble and improv drama workshops. They will also get to rehearse and perform for each other in YHS's beautiful theatre. The day will end with a group dance and social time. There will be a limited number of spots, so watch out for details! All COC members will be welcome to attend as observers.
