• Lloyd Stone was “the” man at Pioneer Bowl. He could put together more junior leagues than anyone in Bowl Biz. Always a positive thinker. He brightened many centers in his career.

• Mike Aulby shot a 300 game on the way to a P.B.A. win in Wichita.• Sunset Lanes opened in Green Valley on August 3. 7 million $$$.• Gene Stus tried for a threepeat at Cal Bowl. The P.B.A. Senior Tour was coming back

to town! Pro-Ams and live T.V. The best show in town.• Surprise...Donna Adamek joined the staff at AMF Rocket Bowl. She had a lot of tal-

ents: ball drilling, ball speed, lane dressing, etc. Plus, being female she wanted the ball CLEAN!

• What was the name of the “Bowling Pin” used for Grand Openings? Jimmy Da Pin was 8 feet 13 inches. (That's what he said!)

• Handegard stunned Stus at Cal Bowl. Stus was going for 3 but Handegard collected $18,000 and hit the road.

• Westbrook Bowling Center opened in Garden Grove on August 14th. A beautiful cen-ter. Blue and white on the inside. One BIG Neisi league was dressed in white pants and blue shirts. What a sight. Rudy Hinojosa was a great host. Opening day...they provided valet parking!

• The Michael J. Fox film- “Greedy” was partly filmed inside South Bay Bowl. Manager Blake Usilton offered his services. Mark Roth, Brian Voss and George Branham III added the “Pro” touch.

• Daniel Cashew (Aka Cash Money) opened a Pro Shop inside Southwest Bowl with his American Dream Classic Winnings.

• San Gabriel Lanes “guaranteed” a great time if you bowled there! Not great scores.• Gold Strike Lanes in Apple Valley advertised! Roy Rogers did most of his bowling

there because his museum was close by.• Local Robert Smith was crowned the Team USA 1993 National Amateur Champion. He

went on to bowl the Pro Tour for a while. Where is Robert now???• Pinkys closed and re-opened as Fun Bowl of Moreno Valley. The 1959 Pink Cadillac

in the bar stayed. They were part of a small chain, Fun Bowl San Diego and Fun Bowl Orange County.

• New face on the “300” board at Bowl-O-Drome was Sai Itula.• Alex Cheesman won the CBA at Cal Bowl.• ESPN-TV was airing PBA events on Thursdays at 4:30pm.• S.E.D. Junior Travel reported 2 players owned the strike pocket at Friendly Hills; Ja-

son Milligan 290 and Ramon Torres 300.• The 32 team Whitlock League at Del Rio Lanes paid the winning team $32,000. The

“best in the west” bowled it then and bowl it now. (A generation apart.)• Short story....Doug Svela bought Gage Bowl. He was looking through hidden storage

areas and found a 2 fingered ball. It belonged to Walt Rosnick. Walt told our reporter “I used this ball to roll my 6th 300 game and haven’t seen it for 25 years!” At 90 years it was a happy memory. The ball? It was a Black Beauty!

• Tish Johnson won her 16th WWPB at Mission Hills.• Deanne Barraco was all smiles when she received the award for 769 San Gabriel Assn.

High series award.• The winning team? World Team Challenge at Fountain Bowl...Mike McGroth, Damon

Did you ever get up to bowl, pick up your ball, set your feet and a member of the opposing team says, “Do you know what you do with your left hand on your approach?”????Dirty doings! Let’s get on to the good 1993 stuff.

by Carol Mancini

Cardwell, Tom Underwood, Ricky Corona, and Tim Schwerdtfeger.• "Lottery Retailer of the Month" was Westbrook Bowl. What an award! Rudy Hinojosa

and Gary Ford would smile for the camera anytime!• Vince Rodriguez, Fountain Bowl manager was named “Manager of the Year” by the

Orance Co. A.B.C.• The ABC certified 7,250 centers in 1993, that was down by 145. ABC certified lanes in

the U.S, Canada, Puerto Rico and military bases. Old centers were closing, but the new ones were BIGGER and had the latest scoring equipment and lanes.

• For $300, men over 55 could purchase an ABC lifetime membership. $400 for younger guys.

• According to tests...bowling artifacts found in Egypt date back to 3200 B.C. Artifacts were also found in Norfolk, England. All similiar, a ball and wood sticks. Note: All bowl-ers should visit the USBC Hall of Fame and Museum in Texas.

• The ABC recognized 395,637 high scores with awards. 29.7 percent over 1992. The awards? 100 pins over average, 300 games, 299 and 298, 800, 11 in a row, and watch-es for the first time.

• Roger Dalkin was the ABC Assistant Executive Director of the ABC in Greendale, Wis-consin.

• The big debate at ABC headquarters and the convention? Should women be allowed to join the ABC and bowl in ABC certified events and leagues? Since ABC membership was down, the women were welcome. You know the rest of the story.

• The nations top club for bowlers over 50 was California PWSBT. President P.J. Car-roll, V.P’s included Art Goddard, Lee Taylor, Terry Fowler, Leon Dent, and Earl Guy. Handegard was a regular winner! Forget the under 50 guys, they had lots to learn. The PWSBT members had put in their years on the lanes, shared their knowledge, and paid their dues. Every one should be in the Hall of Fame!

• NABI had 6 clubs in So. California. CBA had 12 clubs, ABTA and Donkee were inde-pendent. Some bowlers would roll in 2 or 3 clubs every week-end. “Work to Bowl” was the true saying for many t-shirts.

• Harry Grants 41st “Grant Classic” was running from July thru December at Granada Lanes. Prize fund was based on 1850 bowlers! Imagine signing up bowlers every week-end for 41 years! Yikes!

• Remember when tournaments had dress codes. No shorts! No enter! All balls were tested for hardness. No drinks or food on the lanes. Bowling was a sport enjoyed by anyone walking in the door. (Or rolling in the door.) Respect for bowlers and the centers was a given. And taken.

• Al Hoffman stepped down as Calif. State President. Wayne Ross took over.• No smoking leagues were the “in” thing. Smoking rooms found space in most centers.• Women were being certified and joined lane certification teams. Crawling on the lanes,

into the pits. Oh Joy!• Donna Adamek held down the fort at AMF Rocket Bowl.• Why is a Halloween event on the lanes called a “bash”? 20 lanes said the same.• Milt Galik was top gun at Java Lanes.• Pete Weber won his 21st PBA Title.

We will finish up 1993 next time. More facts, features, faces and a little fiction to have fun with.

With a little Hall-of-Fame help from Pete Weber, 2019 PBA Rookie of the Year Mykel Holliman of Collierville, Tenn., won his first PBA title Sunday in the PBA/PBA50 Hous-ton Emerald Bowl Doubles in Houston, Texas.

Holliman, PBA’s top rookie in 2019, finished second in the USBC Masters but had

yet to capture his first PBA title. Weber, on the other hand, is one of two players in PBA history to win 100 titles at all levels of PBA competition. He has won 37 PBA Tour titles (including 10 majors); 11 PBA50 Tour titles, 47 standard PBA Regionals and six PBA50 Regionals, including his win at Emerald Bowl in Houston, for a total of 101 – 14 behind all-time leader Walter Ray Williams Jr. The duo split a $7,000 first prize.

The winning duo finished the eight-game qualifying portion of the event in third place.

After winning only four of their first nine matches in the 10-game round robin finals, they were still stalking the leaders in third place going into the final position round match. The father-son duo of Deo Benard from Henderson, Nev., and Rick Benard, now living in Keller, Texas, had just assumed a slim lead over WRW and his PBA Tour champion partner Dick Allen from Lexington, S.C. With only 73 pins separating the top three teams, Williams and Allen combined for a 420 team game to top the Benards’ final game of 404, while Weber and Holliman handily defeated the team of Paul McCordic of Sugar Land, Texas, and Justin Bui from Terrytown, La., 468-422. Earning 50 match bonus pins, We-ber and Holliman overtook Williams and Allen by 11 pins, 8,539-8,528, in 18-game total pinfall to claim the title.

HALL OF FAMER PETE WEBER HELPS ROOKIE MYKEL HOLLIMAN WIN FIRST TITLE

Mega Vegas league at Del Rio Lanes in Downey. Daniel also bowls the Men’s 975 Manu-facturing league at Keystone.

Daniel and Kristian met while bowling at Keystone and have been together since. All three of their daughter’s bowl in the junior program at Keystone.

Angel has recently started bowling this season in the JAT Sport Junior Gold program, a preparatory league that readies the bowlers for sport competition, including a possible collegiate bowling career, and the challenge of the league has really paid off.

She has grown so much this season as a bowler. Angel is the fourth Keystone Junior to bowl a perfect game in 2019. Her 10th shot was

light in the pocket, but she got the carry. She tugged the 11th shot, but it carried. Those in attendance could see how nervous she was, yet how excited at the same time. Her 12th shot was laid down perfectly and flush in the pocket. The entire junior program erupted with cheers! It was amazing to see her run to her

dad at the end. Her one goal is to someday beat her dad scratch while bowling. I think that day is not

too far away. Angel is the youngest female bowler to bowl a 300 in our center at least in the last 25 years.

Congratulations Angel! Everyone at Keystone is so proud of you! We can’t wait to see you continue to develop into a great bowler!

REDLANDS – Happy Holidays from Santa’s play-ground, EMPIRE BOWL. In the photo Desiree Buell and Lordan Ferguson have a good laugh between frames as they celebrate the season. It is the season for fun, good times and good bowling. That’s why Lordan was at Empire Bowl, competing in the Christmas version of the weekly Wednesday No-Tap Tournament. It is a weekly event that provides friendly competition and fun for all.

Desiree is Empire Bowl’s top Desk Manager. That’s because she has “PERSONALITY”. When Bobby Rydell composed and sang his hit song titled “Personality” some 50 years ago, he must have had someone like Desiree in mind. She is the personification of what the word “Person-ality” means and is all about. Desiree is always in a good mood, flashing a big smile and speaking an encouraging word for all.

Lordan is a great guy and fun to be around. On the con-course he is all smiles and full of cheer. However, on the lanes he is a serious competitor. He doesn’t let up or give an inch because it’s Christmas. The photo shows Lordan on the concourse where he is all smiles and wearing one of his favorite bowling hats. He and Desiree are spread-ing Christmas Cheer. Lordan loves to wear a hat while bowling. He has several favorites. If you look closely at the photo you will see his choice chapeau for this Holiday Season. It’s a blue Canadian Mounty Cap. I bet he has a red Santa Clause hat in his bowling bag as well. Great look Lordan. Great personality Desiree. MERRY CHRIST-MAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS everyone.

DIAMOND BAR — We at Oak Tree Lanes hope everyone had a Great Christmas and are looking forward to a Happy New Year. If you have no plans yet we will be having a New Years Eve event, starting at 10 pm until 1 pm. Cost is $130 a lane for up to 6 people. You will get unlimited bowling. This will also include the rental shoes and a large 1 topping pizza along with a pitcher of soda. Then throughout the night we will be giving away prizes and having Thunder Alley and music playing for your enjoyment. It will be family orientated so the children can come and join the fun with you.

The Turtlebowl Youth Bowling Program will be starting their Spring Season next week. They have 3 different days to choice from or you can bowl all of them. It’s your choice.

They participate in the local City Tournament, State Tournament in July & Pepsi Tournament. They will keep you informed about all other tournaments that you can participate in. Earn more scholarships to help pay for your schooling when you go onto college.

They have a Tuesday night Jr/Adult sport shot league that will start up on Jan. 7th, that bowls at 7pm. Practice starts at 6:50 pm and the pattern changes every 4 weeks. They will have a meeting at 6:30 pm the first night.

Then on Thursday Jan. 9th at 4:30 pm is a regular Youth league with 2 on a team ages 17 and below. Practice starts at 4:20 pm and they will have a meeting at 4 pm the first night.

Their main program is Saturday morning. That will start up on Jan. 11th, bowls at 10 am with practice at 9:50 am. There are 3 leagues. The 8 year olds & under who bowl 2 games and we do not use bumpers. They learn the proper way of bowling and participate in the tournaments. They have 2 & 3 year olds that bowl in this program that carry 40 & 50 averages.

Then the 8 to 12 year olds with 2 on a team bowling 3 games and the final group is our Jr/Adult 12 year olds and up. That is 3 on a team and can have all youth on a team but can not have all adults on a team. The adults at the end can either get a trophy or donate their award as scholarship to a youth bowler.

The final league is the Jr. Gold league that bowls Satur-day at 1:30 pm starting Jan 11th and practice starts at 1:20 pm. Bowling 4 games a week trying to earn a spot into the Jr. Gold Tournament that will be taking place in Las Vegas 2020.
