Bowling news

This area survey form (circa 1983), along with a competitive pricing survey, were invalu-able tools for me in determining the potential of a property.

When I began a quest to find any remaining bowling newspapers during the month of Sep-tember, I was saddened to see that only a hand-ful of journals were still providing actual printed papers for distribution.

After I approached the International Bowl-ing Media Association (IBMA) about any re-maining members that might still be printing newspapers, the result was even more depress-ing than expected. Brian Hirsch, IBMA Operations Manager (and prede-cessor Jackie Wyckoff), suggested that the Des-ert Bowler (Arizona) and the Detroit Bowler might be the only other pub-lications that provide a printed paper, in addition to an online edition.

My initial investigation found only four publica-tions that are still print-ing a bowling newspa-per: California Bowling News, Sports Reporter (New Jersey), The Bowl-ing News (Dallas), and the Metro Bowler (Min-neapolis). As of this date, I still have not confirmed that either the Desert Bowler or Detroit Bowler are printing hard copies, but I have located a version of the Desert Bowler on line (desertbowler.com).

As I reviewed the pages of the Desert Bowler, I spotted a map that showed all of the bowling centers in the greater Phoenix area… a total of 30. Compared to Los Angeles, or Northern New Jersey, the number of operating locations seemed a bit high, piquing my interest to investigate further.

Of the 30 locations, a surprising total of 17 centers are operated by Bowlero (AMF-7; Bowlero-9; and Bowlmor-1). Phoenix was one of the few areas that I never investigated while working for AMF, because it was dominated by two other integers in bowling - Fairlanes, which was acquired by AMF Bowling Centers in 1995; and Brunswick Recreation Centers, also acquired by Bowlmor-AMF (now known as Bowlero) in 2014.

If my recollection is correct, the Bowlmor and AMF locations in Phoenix appear to represent the old Fair-lanes sites, while the Bowlero locations are the old Brunswick centers. With a 2017 estimated population of 4,737,270 in the greater Phoenix Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA), the population per bowling center equates to 157,909. Carrying that a step further and applying an average of 30 lanes for each of the 30 locations, that places an average of 5,263 people per lane bed.

Back in the heyday of bowling, the Phoenix number of people per lane bed would represent an opportunity for another location. The average in the 1970’s and 1980’s was 2,000 people per lane bed, and anything ap-proaching 5,000 was a “no-brainer” for construction of another bowling center.

Now let’s consider the population to lane ratio in greater Los Angeles. Using the same metrics that we applied above, the Los Angeles SMSA represents a 2017 estimate of 18,790,000 residents. In an area from Camarillo to Riverside, and Apple Valley to Lake Forest, my estimate of 40 bowling centers, of which 12 are operated by Bowlero, equates to 469,750 per bowling center, or 15,658 per lane bed. If not for business regulations and state taxes, the opportunity for additional bowling centers in Los Angeles would be… unbe-lievable!

How about Northern New Jersey? With approximately 40 bowling centers and over 8,000,000 residents in the local SMSA, the number of bowlers per center is 222,050. Only 8 of the 40 locations are operated by Bowlero in Northern New Jersey, with approximately 7,400 residents per lane bed. Once again, the opportu-nity for a new bowling center in this area, while not as dramatic as Los Angeles, is evident.

As I was wrapping up this article, I received a call from Herb Grassl, Editor of the Desert Bowler. During the course of a conversation that lasted a couple of hours we agreed on just about everything in life, including the information provided above. Herb also indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic has eliminated the printed hard copies for now, but a very colorful edition is provided twice a month online.

What about the Detroit Bowler, or any other bowling newspaper that you’re aware of in your area? Let us know of any printed or online publications and we will include them in an upcoming article. To be continued…

it. He had to be nervous, because I know I was. I kind of thought he might have missed it outside on the 12th ball, but he hit it flush.”

Dawson Kohl put 10 in the pit on almost every shot during the perfect game. The closest call came in the fifth frame, when he shot a little high and tripped the 4-pin for-ward.

“That was really the only lucky break,” Heath Kohl said. “Otherwise, they were all pretty good. He made a lot of good shots.”

“I’ve never experienced anything like it, especially coming from a 10-year-old,” Heath Kohl said. “You don’t expect it. You see so many of them in men’s league, you kind of expect it there. But it’s kind of surreal when it’s a 10-year-old.

“It was more nerve-wracking for me to watch him throw it than it was for me to throw one myself. It was awesome.”

Dawson Kohl has a way to go to catch his dad for 300 games. Heath Kohl has 51 perfect games in his career. But Saturday could be the first of many.

“I don’t think I’ll be as nervous as I was for the first one,” Dawson Kohl said. “Knowing I already have one, I think I’ll be a little more relaxed.”

The California Bowling Writers has adopted Operation Freedom Paws! Operation Freedom Paws nonprofit organization was founded by “California Bowler and Veteran” Mary Cortani in 2010 that has provided service dogs and training support to veterans and others who suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, complex PTSD, traumatic brain injury and other physical, neurological, psychological and mobility needs. According to experts, service dogs help empower people with disabilities to live quality lives. Operation Freedom Paws carefully matches cli-ents with their specially chosen four-legged com-panions, most of which come from rescue shel-ters. The partners then begin a 48-week program which trains the clients to train their own dogs. At the end of the program, they’re certified together as service dog teams. Thanks for supporting our veterans! Join us in making a difference in the lives of those who have served in our armed forces.

Chad Murphy continued from page 1

For now, it appears that no help will be forthcoming from on high. Therefore, I appeal to our Bowling leaders for help. Maybe our leaders here on earth can help us? May-be our leaders here on earth can save us?

Chad Murphy is the Executive Director of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). The USBC is the gov-erning body for the sport of Bowling in the United States. Chad Murphy is the most important leader in the sport of Bowling. If anyone on earth can help us, it’s Chad Mur-phy.

Chad Murphy help us. Chad Murphy save us. Chad Murphy save Bowling in CALIFORNIA. Please send a USBC envoy or ambassador to Sacramento. Some say our governor is a wise man, someone who is willing to listen. Some say our governor is reasonable and will lift the shut-down on bowling centers if someone explains to him the dire consequences if the shutdown continues.

Chad Murphy please send someone to the wisest gov-ernor in America and explain the efficacy of reopening our bowling centers. Please send someone to explain the reasons why reopening our bowling centers is good for our state. Please send someone to the wisest governor in America to explain why reopening bowling centers is good for the economy, for the mental and physical well-being of the people of California. Please explain to the wisest governor in America why bowling is completely safe if done properly.

BOWLING CAN BE COMPETED SAFELY DUR-ING A PANDEMIC WHEN BOWLERS WEAR MASKS, SOCIAL DISTANCE AND PROPER SANITATION IS PRACTICED.

Chad Murphy come to our rescue. Chad Murphy save us. Chad Murphy save bowling in California. Now is the time to act. California may have the wisest governor in the land. He is the leading conservationist in America and the number one advocate for saving our planet. He can be made to see and understand that bowling is good for the mental and physical wellbeing of the people of CALI-FORNIA. He can be shown that bowling can be competed safely.

Some say the governor of California is a wise man. He will understand that reopening the bowling industry in California will be good for all Californians. He will understand that BOWLING IS NOT AN “EXISTENTIAL THREAT” to survival of our state’s inhabitants.

Chad Murphy save us. Chad Murphy save the sport of Bowling in California.
