BCU NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO. I 2015 In this issue: Message from the Principals BCU Activities & Events Calendar 2015 Note from our Chairperson Activities in Brief Financial Report 31 December 2014 Scholarship & Donations MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALS In June 2015 BCU School will come of age reaching the 10year milestone. A decade ago it was a clear intention of the BCU founders to make an Indonesian school rather than an international school, so that the school would be best able to contribute toward the positive development of the province of Kalimantan Tengah by providing human centered education to local children. BCU School is indeed a “social project”, a project that provides and promotes positive social development. The UN and NGOs like YUM do it by saving lives through clean water, malaria, and mercury projects. BCU does it by educating and nurturing children, tomorrow’s adults, to have a social conscience, noble aspirations and ambitions and the desire and ability to improve their society.

MESSAGE  FROM  THE  PRINCIPALS

In  June  2015  BCU  School  will  come  of  age  reaching  the  10-‐‑year  milestone.

  2

Like  planting  a   forest,   this  was  a   long-‐‑term  project.  Now  however,  10  years  along   the  trees  are  starting  to  blossom.  Our  first  graduates  are  now  young  adults  most  of  the  way  through   their   university   studies.   They   return   often   to   Palangka  Raya   and   to   their   old  school  with  the  intention  of  not  just  visiting,  but  with  the  desire  to  be  useful.  They  spend  their  holidays  doing  all  manner  of  community  work.  Some  work  with  orphans.  Others  organize  community  and  sports  events   for  young  people   in  Palangka  Raya  and  others  give  their  time  as  motivational  speakers   in  local  high  schools,  giving  advice  on  how  to  get   into  overseas  universities.  The  positive  social   impact  of  our  graduates  on  Palangka  Raya  is  already  evident  and  undoubtedly  will  continue  to  grow.  We  are  very  proud  of  our  young  graduates.

A   school   is   a   place   of   learning   for   everyone,   not   just   students.   Over   the   years   our  teachers   too   have   developed   to   be   the   best   in   the   province   and   have   provided  many  hours  of  valuable   teacher   training   to   teachers   from  local  schools.  Recently  during   joint  assessment   by   the   Education   Department   and   the   University   of   Palangka   Raya,   630  teachers   from  the  province  were  assessed  and  ranked  1st  and  3rd   respectively  were  our  very  own  Ibu  Elis  and  Ibu  Rida.

Another  achievement  of  note  began  in  October  when  BCU  entered  an  online  Olympiad  in  Math,  Science,  Social  Studies  and  Languages.  The  Olympiad  was  an  initiative  of   the  National   Education   Department.   Our   students   won   at   the   local   level   and   then   at   the  provincial   level  and  went  on  to  compete  in  the  national  competition  in  December.  Our  Primary   School   students   came   in   7th   place!   Competing   in   the   world’s   fourth   largest  education   system,   comprised   of   236,000   schools,   7th   place   was   not   too   shabby   at   all!  Congratulations   to   the   teachers,   Bachtiar,   Rida,   Yoga,   Tetti   and   Yeni   and   to   all   the  students  who  participated.

BCU  School   always   has   been   nonprofit.  During   the   early   years  we   relied   heavily   on  donations.   Our   volunteer   program,   scholarship   program   and   our   academic   program  continue   to   be   strengthened   by   donations.   All   donations   received   by   the   school  contribute   directly   to   the   practice   of   nurturing/educating   children   to   have   good  character  and  to  be  of  future  benefit  to  their  communities  and  the  world.  A  worthwhile  cause  indeed!

On  behalf  of   everyone  at   the   school  we  would   like   to   thank  all  of  our  friends  and  sponsors  all  around  the  world  for  their  support  over  the  last  decade.  Karsten  Karim  MacDonald,  Gunarjo  S.Budi

BCU  SCHOOL  IN  ITS  10TH  YEAR

by  Utami  Geiger  /  Chairperson

Sekolah  Bina  Cita  Utama  is  in  its  10th  year  this  year.    To  mark  this  event,  BCU  School  has  prepared  several  events,  partly  as  an  outreach  program  to  make   ourselves   more   known   and   visible   in   the   wider   community   of

Palangka   Raya,   partly   as   community   service   and   not   to   forget   to   celebrate   the   10th  anniversary   of   our   school   and   give   thanks   to   Almighty   God   for   the   blessings   we  experienced   in  our  endeavor   to  create  a  school   that  will  bring  change   for   the   future  of  Kalimantan.

BCU  School  in  collaboration  with  Borneo  Productions  International  (BPI)  and  the  City  of  Palangka  as  well  as  Multi  Stakeholder  Forum  is  organizing  a   short   film   festival   for   the   students   of   Palangka   Raya.     In   cooperation  with   the   Department   of   Education   and   Culture   and   the   Department   of  Tourism  and  Creative  Economies,  we  invited  a  total  of  300  schools  in  and  around  Palangka  Raya,  from  Primary  to  High  school.  This  festival  is  also  is  the   first  of   its  kind   in   this   city,   and  we  have  plans   to  make   this   a  yearly  event.  For  this  year  the  theme  of  the  Film  Festival  is  on  environment  and  culture.  There  were  49  participating  schools  that  attended  the  workshop  and  training  by

the   BPI   team.   Highlight   of   the   event   will   be   the   13th   June,   were   the  winners  will  be  awarded  the  FFP  Trophy.

We   have   started   also   an   awareness   campaign   on   keeping   the  environment  clean  from  plastic  waste.    This  event  is  planned  for  April,  coinciding  with  Earth  Day  and  collaborated  with  WWF.    Primary  school  children  from  the  area  of  Bukit  Batu,   where   we   are   located   will   participate   in   the   event   where   they   will   compete   in  writing  letters  to  the  local  authorities  about  their  views  on  environment  and  in  painting  posters  to  promote  environmental  awareness.

Another  event  planned  for  later  this  year  is  a  fun  bike  quest  around  the  city  of  Palangka  Raya   –   again   in   collaboration  with   the  Government   of   the  City   of   Palangka  Raya   and  Multi  Stakeholder  Forum  and  this  time  together  with  the  Bike  Community  of  the  City.  To  mark  BCU’s  10th  Anniversary  the  route  will  be  10  KM  long  through  10  historical  and  cultural  sites  of  the  city.

On   education,   the   school   signed   an  MOU   earlier   this   year  with   Lewes  New   School   and   GHFP   with   the   purpose   to   build   on   human   centered   education  training.  This  is  also  part  of  the  school’s  effort  to  comply  with  the  latest  requirements  of  the   Department   of   Education   for   National   Plus   schools   to   change   status   into   a

Cooperation  Education  Unit.  Our  high  school  recently  passed  the  accreditation  process  performed  by  the  National  Accreditation  Body  for  Education.

Ten  years  have  gone  by,  and  yet  when  we  look  back  it  seems  it  was  just  yesterday,  and  if  we   look   closer  we   have   achieved  many   things,  what   is   clear   to  me   is   that   the   non-‐‑material   things   outweighs   more   the   material   things.   One   thing   is   for   sure,   we   were  pioneers   in   creating   a   school   in   Central   Kalimantan   with   modern   teaching  methodologies   and   bi-‐‑lingual   education,   and   education   not   just   in   terms   of   academic  development  but  in  emphasizing  the  human  qualities  in  each  student.

We  have  passed   those   ten  years   just   like   children  going   through   their  growing  pains,  and  understand   that   in   every   challenge  presented   to  us   there  are  ways   for  us   to   learn  and  to  grow.  Undoubtedly  there  will  be  more  challenges  ahead,  and  we  will  approach  them   just   like   our   students   when   they   have   to   face   examinations,   knowing   that   each  passing  challenge  will  get  us  more  closer  to  fulfilling  our  dreams  and  vision.

ACTIVITIES  IN  BRIEF

BCU  Choir  and  More  …      March  was  a  busy  month  for  the  students  of  BCU.  Apart   from   the   exams   that   currently   the   Grade   9  and  12  had  to  take,  the  choir  made  up  of  the  other  students  performed  at   the   local  TV  station,  and   in  front   of   the   Mayor’s   office   in   Palangka   Raya,  Central   Kalimantan.   We   were   grateful   to   have  Kristina  Bischoff  ..  once  again..  conducting  the  BCU  choir..   perform   enchanting   songs   including   the

SCHOLARHIP  &  DONATIONS    Thank   You   for   your   continuous   support   to   our   Scholarship   Pool   of   Funds.   Last  year  we  received  a  total  of  $16.000.  Since  January  till  date  we  have  received    $9.000.  Currently  we  have  18  students  both  from  Subud  and  non-‐‑Subud  families  who  are  on  full  or  partial  scholarship.    It  is  very  much  rewarding  to  see  how  the  students  grow  and  develop  for  a  better  future  in  Central  Kalimantan  …  Yet  we  need  more  funding  to   sponsor   these   students   who   are   children   of   Subud   members   and   local   Dayak  families.    Each  penny  counts  –  and  its  never  to  late  to  share  …

KARMILA  BOYIMIN  –  Grade  2   is  one   of   the   students   receiving   full  scholarship   from   the   BCU  scholarship  fund.  Mila  is  a  talented  student   who   was   granted   a  scholarship   for   grade   one.   Both   of  her   parents   are   Subud   members.  Her  mother  works  as  a  housemaid  and  her  father  is  one  of  the  security  guards   in   Rungan   Sari.   Without  the   scholarship   funds  Mila   would  not   have   the   opportunity   to   be   at  BCU   School   where   her   talents
