DEAR CAMPER:

Summer Camp—that long anticipated stretch of days free of responsibility and rife with possibility. It’s a time to hunt for insects, master handstands, practice swimming strokes, explore from the treetops to the bay, and make new friends.

At YMCA Camp Letts, we believe that each summer is a gift, and only you can decide how you use it! Since the end of our 2015 camp season, we’ve been researching, surveying and creating an amazing experience for you this summer. I can’t wait to show how we’ve made camp even more fun!

All of your favorite people and programs are here, along with brand new activities that you’ll discover as you journey through our gates. Whether you’re an alumni camper or new to the Camp Letts family, you’ll have the time of your life! To give you a sneak peek, you can sail off into the sunrise, fly down our zip line, hit a bull’s eye in our archery course, gallop around the riding ring and jump the wake on your wake board. All in time for lunch! Chef Sharon promises to cook up some tasty treats that will delight even the pickiest eater.

Are you ready for an adventure? Visit Camp Letts this summer for a week, 2 weeks or all summer long to meet your new best friend and explore what it feels like to be part of the crew!

Thanks for checking out YMCA Camp Letts for your summer to remember.

See you this summer,

Andrew MasonExecutive DirectorYMCA Camp Letts

DEAR PARENT/GUARDIAN:

There is something magical about the firsts you experience at overnight camp: being away from home, sitting around a campfire, sleeping under the stars, hiking and canoeing. No child leaves the same and every summer thereafter is filled with sweet memories. When your child stays

at the YMCA, they become part of a nationwide

alumni network that will help them reach higher even when camp is done. Whether you’ve felt that

experience or always wished you

had, Camp Letts will connect your family to the

bigger picture: the power of adventure and friendship.

In Health & Happiness,

Angie Reese-HawkinsPresident & CEOYMCA of Metropolitan Washington

FOR OVER 100 YEARS, CAMP LETTS HAS BEEN THE SUMMER PLAYGROUND FOR CAMPERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.EACH DAY AT CAMP YOU WILL EXPERIENCE SOMETHING NEW: A NEW ACTIVITY, A NEW FRIEND, A NEW CHALLENGE. WHATEVER IT IS, WE KNOW THAT EACH NEW THING YOU DISCOVER WILL BE MORE EXCITING THAN YESTERDAY’S. HOW DO WE KNOW? BECAUSE EVERY YEAR HUNDREDS OF CAMPERS TELL US THAT THEY DISCOVERED SOMETHING NEW AND CREATED GREAT MEMORIES AT CAMP LETTS.

Both our girls enjoyed their first year at sleep away camp. It is more than 10 days after the fact, and I am still hearing stories, listening to camp songs, and so on. My husband and I have kindly been informed that next year they want to stay for two sessions. YMCA Camp Letts helped us to help them create memories that will last a lifetime.” — S. Evans, Edgewater, MD

NDSHIPAGES 6–16At Camp Letts we have 3 goals for every camper: try something new, make a new friend, and have fun! We believe if a camper can do the first two, having fun is guaranteed.

ACTIVITIES FAIR Overnight Camp starts on Sunday between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. During your first evening, you will attend the Activities Fair. Here, you will choose the activities that will become your morning schedule for the rest of the week. See page 16 for a full list of activities and the daily schedule.

MEALSHave you seen anyone join The Order of the Oar? Have you ever eaten hands free cake on Super Hero Monday? Or nearly forgotten to eat* because lunch time suddenly became an impromptu dance party? It’s almost impossible to describe the noise and fun of meal times. Three times a day, your cabin will shout and sing as you try to outperform your rival cabins, all of whom are competing for extra points towards the Crew Cup, all while eating food that seems too good to be “camp food.” Many meals have themes so make sure you pack something pink, a pair of knee high socks, and a tie-dye t-shirt.*Don’t worry, our staff will make sure you don’t forget to eat!

TRY OUT OVERNIGHT CAMPAGES 6-8

Specially designed for first time campers, this two night, three day stay at camp is a great way to explore all of the fun we have to offer.

Let your counselors take you and your bunk-mates on a tour of just about everything we do. Canoe, kayak or sail the Rhode River, try a pony ride, learn a new sport and design a masterpiece in Arts and Crafts. We’ll take you sea-sledding, for a polar bear plunge at the pool, teach you campfire songs, reveal the secret of making the perfect s’more; all this while you make great new friends!

MORNING ACTIVITIESYour three morning activities are your chance to acquire and master a new skill. So try not to choose something you do every day; pick something different and you might discover a talent you never knew you had.

Programs are instructed by our diverse staff. Selected from all over the world for their experience and expertise, they will help you learn, grow and have the time of your life. In fact our great staff is the reason many campers come back year after year.

EVENING ACTIVITYWhen the sun starts to set, Camp comes alive. We hold a camp-wide activity or game each night, which ties in to the weekly theme. It also uses as many parts of camp as we can, so you really get a chance to explore. Evening games help your crew earn points towards the Crew Cup.

AFTERNOON CABIN AND CREW ACTIVITIESThe afternoons are your chance to explore all that camp has to offer. After Siesta, you will go to activity period 4. Every day you will be able to do something different.

The rest of the afternoon is spent in Cabin and Crew activities. You will meet back up with your cabin and catch up on your morning activities before doing activities together as a group.

Only time and imagination limit what you and your bunk mates can achieve. It might be jewelry making in arts and crafts, kayaking on the river, building shelters in the woods or exploring “Monster Island.”

The afternoon’s activities at Camp are designed to be fun and recreational, and an opportunity to get to know your bunk mates.

Want to have a summer that will be the envy of all your friends? Then we are the place for you! This summer, we will be running ten one-week sessions, each with a different theme.

Each day you may choose up to four different activities: Archery, Basketball, Canoeing, Lacrosse, Soccer, Drama, High Ropes (ages 11–16), Zip Lining and much more! You could participate in twenty different activities in one week and still need to come back to experience them all.

Want to spend time in the water? At Day Camp, you get to swim every day, try out the canoes and kayaks, and take a ride in our paddle boats. Every camper gets to take a ride on our twelve person Sea Sled.*

Still unsure what you want to do? Are you curious about Cricket or Gaelic Football? Then why not ask one of our staff! Camp Letts staff come from all over the world. Some are from as far away as New Zealand and Australia, as far north as Finland and as far south as Zimbabwe; others are from right here in Edgewater. Ask them and they might teach you games that you have only seen on television or may have never even heard of.

Each week is packed with fun and adventure, but if you need more, you could sign up for one of our specialty horseback riding, wake boarding and water skiing, or paintball add-ons.

Each Thursday night, we have an optional Day Camp sleep over. Campers who participate join the Overnight Campers for dinner, evening activity, closing campfire, and breakfast before joining Day Camp for their final day of activities. Staying over is great practice for a whole week of Overnight Camp in the future!

Parents are welcome to join us on Fridays at 3:00pm for the weekly campfire.

*Parents please read waterfront activity restrictions on page 11.

Fees are listed on page 17.

EQUESTRIANAGES 8–16

HORSE MASTERS* The Horse Masters program is designed for all ages and skill levels. On the first day, we will evaluate your skills before separating into groups. As your skills progress, you will learn jump and two point position, cantering on the lead, and moving on to jumping. Riders also participate in a weekly trail ride. Camp Letts CHA certified instructors will give you individual attention so that you can bring the best out of your horse and the rider bond.

TRAIL RIDES* Enjoy a scenic trail ride with our CHA certified instructors through our extensive wooded trails overlooking the Rhode River.

If you are curious about horses, then this is a great introduction to riding. Trail rides take place in the afternoons and are limited to one trail ride per camper.

*Horse Masters and Trail Rides are paid add-ons. Spaces in both programs are limited and often sell out before the start of summer. Early registration for both of these programs is recommended.

Horse riding requires participants to wear footwear with raised heels.

SESSION 9

After its introduction in the summer of 2013, the Annual Color War has become Camp Letts’ closing event. Set in the final session of August, it begins by announcing the two captains before splitting the entire camp into two tribes. From there, the Red Tribe and the Blue Tribe battle through a series of contests that embody sportsmanship and teamwork. Each day the competition is different, but through the course of the week, we will use all of the program areas that Camp Letts has to offer.

The week’s events take us from the waterfront to the barn and back, with tests of athleticism, general knowledge, dance, art and creativity. Each day’s competition will test the staff and the campers to their fullest as they compete to become the Color War Champions.

No extra cost: The cost of Introduction to Sailing is included in the registration price for Overnight and Day Camp.

SAILING ONE*ALL AGESAhoy Mate! Sailing 1 is a weeklong beginner’s course that will teach you the basics of sailing and build your confidence on the water. You will learn how to make your boat glide through the water with just the wind as your motor. Discover the different parts of the boat and how they work together, how to rig and de-rig, points of sail, steering, tacking and jibing. This program is all about having fun while learning to sail.

SAILING TWO*ALL AGESFor those of you ready to get serious about sailing, Sailing 2 is your step to becoming the next Jimmy Spithill. Our sailing instructors will guide you as you progress towards single-handed sailing in our Opti and Laser fleets. Campers should have basic knowledge of rigging, boat handling and points of sail to enroll in Sailing 2. You will learn wind awareness, effects of tides and currents and the finer points of sail trim while having fun with your camp mates.

Campers who are unable to demonstrate the swimming skills required to achieve a yellow band will not be able to participate in waterfront activities during their stay. YMCA Camp Letts recommends that Campers wishing to participate in waterfront activities be taken to a swimming pool to build confidence in the water prior arriving at Camp Letts. Refunds cannot be given to campers that are unable to participate in paid waterfront activities due to swimming ability.

Race across the water on one of our giant sea sleds. Each cabin will get the opportunity to experience the thrill of being pulled by one of our ski boats.

No matter what your level of paintballing experience, our classes are thrilling and guaranteed to help you push your limits.

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (CiT) PROGRAM AGE 17 OR ON COMPLETION OF HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR YEAR

Our Counselor in Training (CiT) program just keeps getting better. Spend 4 weeks with the CiT team and see how this experience of a lifetime results in friendships you’ll treasure forever!

During your time with us, you’ll become part of the camper-centered community that is Camp Letts, learning just how we make the experience special for each kid. Through regular training sessions, we will assist with the development of practical skills that will transfer to a host of future roles, from daily life through college to positions of employment.

Under the guidance of our dedicated Training Director, CiTs will be exposed to a range of scenarios that will prepare them to take a

supervised assistant counselor role in a cabin during their camp stay. Specific areas of attention include skill building sessions on positive first impressions, the cultivation of friendships and the role of the counselor in assisting campers in their development of independence, all in the supportive setting that camp provides.

Please note that while many of our CiTs are former campers, this is not a prerequisite for enrollment. Successful participants

in this program are actively encouraged to apply as staff the following summer.

LEADERS IN TRAINING (LiT) PROGRAM AGE 16 OR ON COMPLETION OF HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE YEAR

Are you ready to become a camp leader? Join our Training Director for 2 weeks of leadership development with all the fun of Camp. Through progressive lessons that center on leadership, you will use activities such as group discussion, role-playing, and practical exercises to explore and practice your new skills. Complete tasks on problem-solving, communication, program planning, public speaking, and conflict resolution, all while still enjoying a full camper experience.

During this time you will have additional opportunities to participate in fun and challenging team building activities which facilitate the development of a strong, cohesive group of lifelong friends.

OVERNIGHT CAMP ACTIVITIES AND SCHEDULE During the Activities Fair on Sunday evening, you will choose your weekly activities.

The mornings at Camp Letts are devoted to acquisition of new skills and the mastery of old ones. You will choose up to three activities (some activities like the ropes course and canoeing are double periods) which you will participate in all week. Under instruction from our staff, you will be able to learn everything about your chosen activities and go home an expert.

For Activity period four, you will be able to choose five different activities, a different one each day. This is your opportunity to try something new and exciting that you may never have before.

During Cabin and Crew Activity periods, you will stay with your bunk mates and engage in a wide variety of activities chosen by you and your counselors.

Our Add On activities occur during the morning sessions. Campers that are enrolled in Horse Masters, Paintball, Sailing 1, Sailing 2, or Water Skiing & Wake Boarding will be limited to making an afternoon activity selection only. Sailing 3 occurs in the afternoon.

Below is a list of some of the activities from which your camper can choose:

STAFFING AND CAMPER SUPERVISIONYMCA Camp Letts recruits highly skilled individuals whose warmth, maturity and leadership have made them stand out. Our diverse staff consists of counselors from many different states and countries. All staff go through an extensive screening process including interviews, multiple character references and fingerprinting by the state police and the FBI. All international staff are interviewed and vetted by the State Department as part of their visa application process. All staff have passed background checks in their country of origin that meet MD State, Federal and Interpol standards. Staff are selected based on their command of the English language and child care experience. The administrative staff of YMCA Camp Letts is available to assist campers and their families year-round. Our goal for the summer is that every camper leaves Camp Letts with an experience that will have them counting down the days until next year. Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility are the YMCA’s core values, and are modeled by all of our staff.

LODGING Campers live in gender and age-appropriate groups with their counselors. A minimum of one counselor is assigned to every eight campers. Cabins are not air conditioned. All cabins have indoor plumbing, except for the oldest boys. These campers live in our Rustic Cabins and use the bathrooms in our nearby pool-house and shower block. We allow for one bunk mate request per camper and both campers must make the matching request. Please make bunk mate requests

on the registration form. Bunk mates must be within one year of each other in age and the older camper will always move to a younger cabin if necessary. While we do our best to accommodate campers’ wishes, bunk mate requests cannot be guaranteed.

MEALSA healthy diet is an important factor in a successful camp experience. We serve three healthy, well-balanced meals daily in our clean, spacious dining hall. Our nutritious menus include daily fresh fruits and low fat milk, a salad bar, and a variety of vegetarian options. Most dietary requirements can be met. Call us in advance if you have any questions or would like to discuss the needs of your camper.

SAFETYCampers are allowed every possible freedom within the limits of safety. However, as YMCA Camp Letts sits on a peninsula, aquatic safety is of the utmost importance. Each camper’s swimming skills are evaluated on the first day of camp to determine their abilities. Eligibility to sail, water-ski and/or participate in waterfront activities is determined by each camper’s swimming abilities. All resident campers who receive our beginner swim band color (RED) will be encouraged to participate in our Swim Safety Program. The goal of the Swim Safety Program is to encourage each camper to increase their level of comfort in and around water and to help them advance to the next swim band level. There is no additional charge for participating in the Swim Safety Program. We encourage all campers to swim prior to coming to camp so that they are able to swim approximately 50 yards (150 feet) without assistance or stopping.

CAMP STORE We do not allow campers to carry cash. Please add the camp store money into your camper’s account at the time of registration. The minimum amount to add is $5; this can be used to purchase snacks and souvenirs from the Camp Store during the week. This account is used to purchase items from the Camp Store only. Money is automatically carried over if your camper is staying with us for multiple weeks. Any remaining money at the end of each camp session is donated to our 2016 Caring for Community fund. This fund enables children, who otherwise could not afford it, to attend YMCA Camp Letts through our scholarship program.

CHANGEOVER WEEKEND Campers staying for multiple, consecutive sessions may choose to stay at camp for the weekend rather than check out. The cost of this change over weekend is $100 per weekend. Campers will participate in special games and activities. Laundry service will only be provided for campers staying for more than 2 consecutive sessions.

TRANSPORTATION Bus service for Overnight Campers is available between Camp Letts and the YMCA branches at Bethesda, Arlington, Silver Spring and Calomiris. Transportation is $40 one-way, $80 roundtrip. Transportation should be selected at the time of registration and must be confirmed 10 days prior to your camper’s departure to camp. Sunday transportation leaves the Bethesda branch at 12:00pm, Silver Spring at 12:30pm, Arlington at 12:00pm, and Calomiris at 12:00pm.

Camp is unable to schedule transportation for flights that arrive before 7:00am and after 7:00pm. No transportation is available for day campers. These fees are non-refundable.

CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES It is our desire to keep camp an electronics free zone. We want campers to enjoy the moment and make new friends at camp without the distractions of social media and the intrusions of digital technology. Camp Letts will always arrange for campers to make necessary phone calls. Electronic devices are not permitted at camp and will be confiscated and returned to campers upon checkout. Campers using a cell phone or electronic devices at camp may be grounds for dismissal!

PHONE CALLS Use of the telephone by campers is discouraged. Special arrangements are always made for emergencies.

REGISTRATION AND CAMP FEESA non-refundable registration fee is required for each camp session to reserve a space. Overnight Camp: $150, Day Camp and Try-Out Camp: $50. The balance of the camp session fee, including camp store money and costs of all add-on activities must be paid in full no later than two weeks prior to the start of the camp session.

Completed financial assistance applications must be received before April 20, 2016. Financial assistance is made possible by the YMCA’s Caring for Community fund.

If your child does not have a current membership with a branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, the non-member fee will apply automatically. Any changes made from the original application must be in writing and accompanied by a $25 change fee.

REFUNDS Refunds are NOT available for the following reasons; dismissal, homesickness, late arrival or voluntary withdrawal. If it is deemed advisable by our medical staff to send a camper home due to medical reasons, a parent can request a pro-rated refund. A camper is expected to enter camp at the beginning of a session and to remain until the end of that session. No reduction in fees can be made for late arrivals or early departures. There will be no refunds for “no shows” or cancellations made within 10 days of the session start date unless accompanied by Physicians note. No refunds can be given for activities canceled due to weather conditions. The YMCA reserves the right to refuse any applicant and to cancel any registration.

Campers are to cooperate with staff and behave in a manner outlined in the parent handbook. Behavior deemed inappropriate may result in dismissal from camp.

HEALTH CAREOur Health Center staff are certified medical personnel with a registered nurse on call at all times. All staff members are trained in emergency procedures and certified in First Aid and CPR. Additional medical facilities and emergency services are only minutes away in nearby Annapolis.

It is assumed that your camper is a healthy child in good physical condition and mentally able to participate fully in the program unless otherwise stated in writing to the Camp Director. Campers must be examined by a physician within 24 months prior to their arrival at camp and the results will be recorded on the form provided by YMCA Camp Letts. Maryland State Law (COMAR) requires that all campers attending YMCA CAMP LETTS have a completed health form. Campers are not allowed to attend camp without a completed health form. The health form and copy of your insurance card must be included with your confirmation packet. If a camper needs special medical treatment, medication, hospital care, or physician’s service during their camp session, his/her parents or legal guardian will be responsible for these payments.

INSECT PREVENTION PROGRAM At YMCA Camp Letts, we care deeply about each campers safety and comfort during their visit to our camp. Among other safety procedures, we have implemented and invested in a very proactive insect prevention system. Each residential building undergoes a regularly scheduled and rigorous inspection combined with heat treatments and environmentally safe chemical treatments by a professional extermination company. Most insects (including bed bugs) cannot withstand temperatures of more than 130 degrees Fahrenheit. This combination of environmentally safe chemical and heat treatments creates a very comprehensive and aggressive prevention system that underscores the fact that we are taking the business of insect eradication very seriously. One thing parents can do to help Camp Letts remain insect-free is to place all belongings, including sleeping bags and bedding that your child will be bringing to camp, in the clothes dryer for 40 minutes on high heat.

If you are interested in more information regarding our insect prevention program or any safety programs related to our camp, contact Andrew Mason, YMCA Camp Letts’ Executive Director at [email protected].

WAIVER FORM Any camper may have his or her photograph taken during the course of activities and it is understood that YMCA Camp Letts has permission to use such photos for promotion and various publications unless otherwise indicated on the participant waiver.

LOST ARTICLES All camper personal items left at camp at the end of each session are bagged and stored until the Friday after your camper’s session has ended. Please label all of your camper’s belongings. We recommend not sending new and/or valuable items to camp due the possibility of being lost or left behind.

CAMPER EMAILS AND CARE PACKAGESMail and care packages can be sent to PO Box 208, Edgewater, MD 21037. Please write your camper’s name in full with the session number above the address. Mail and packages should be mailed by the Thursday before your Camper arrives. Alternatively, you can bring mail and packages with you to registration and deposit them at the store. These will be given to your camper during the week. You can email your camper at [email protected]. Campers do not have the ability to respond to emails.

YMCA CAMP LETTS ENDOWMENT FUNDThe YMCA Camp Letts Endowment Fund was established to continue the legacy of the YMCA summer camping programs for generations to come. Charitable donations to the YMCA Camp Letts Endowment (including planned giving) support the camp’s enduring traditions. Gifts provide much needed revenue to enhance camp programs, grant scholarships, and maintain or improve facilities.

For additional information or to make a gift please contact: Andrew Mason, 410-919-1411, or [email protected].

PROGRAM CHAMPIONSYMCA Camp Letts would like to thank Annapolis Subaru for being YMCA Program Champions. Their generous support allows us to continue to provide services and programs that nurture the potential of kids and teens.
