Do you think you are creative? No? What if we tell you, that

everyone is creative! Creativity is hidden inside of every one of us,

we just have to know how to bring it out.

EVERYTHING ABOUT CREATIVITY

WHAT IS CREATIVITY?

Unlike many phenomena in science, there is no singe,

authoritative perspective or definition of creativity.

There are as many definitions of creativity as there are people!

SOME OF THE DEFINITIONS:

A “process of developing new, uncommon, or

unique ideas“.

“The production of ideas and objects that are both

novel or original and worthwhile or appropriate,

that is, useful, attractive, meaningful or correct”.

The ability to challenge assumptions, break

boundaries, recognize patterns, see in new ways,

make new connections, take risks, and seize upon

chance when dealing with a problem.

Those imaginative processes that seek to bring

about novel solutions in the real world.

Process of developing and expressing novel ideas

that are likely to be useful.

Webster’s Dictionary: “CREATIVITY IS THE ABILITY

TO BRING SOMETHING INTO EXISTENCE THAT WAS

NOT THERE BEFORE.”

Page 8: be creactive! YiA TC

8

BARRIERS TO CREATIVITY

Three most common blocks of creativity:

ENVIRONMENTAL BLOCKS

Some blocks occur in our environment.

If you want to be creative, it can be a good idea to go

offsite.

Environments can also be supportive - and you can build

an environment that is full of creative stimuli, or maybe

just very relaxing.

Effective creative environments can vary with people and

moods.

PEOPLE BLOCKS

Because many blocks come from other people we need:

Psychological safety - accepting the person, empathizing

and not evaluating them.

Psychological freedom - think, feel and contribute fully.

Group creativity is particularly tricky and one of the basic

brainstorming rules is no judgment.

Page 9: be creactive! YiA TC

9

INTERNAL BLOCKS

The final creative block is – ourselves; our subconscious

and that little voice that warns us of the dangers of

unconventional thought.

Many of these blocks come from our past and are

programmed in from an early age.

We are taught to follow the rules, be logical and not rock

the boat.

Our parents, teachers and peers have all helped us put

some powerful psychological blocks in place to keep us on

the straight and narrow socially-acceptable road.

Most of the time this is perfectly useful, but when we

want to be creative, it is just a darned nuisance.

'BLOCK-BUSTING'

Is a term that is used to describe actions that are used to

overcome our creative blocks.

Many of the creative tools are specifically designed to get past

your internal blocks and let out your creative self.

For example, a creative skill that children use is play. As adults we

worry that others will judge us if we “stoop to childlike behavior”.

If we can overcome this irrational fear and take on a playful

frame of mind, we can re-open this valuable avenue of

exploration.

Page 10: be creactive! YiA TC

10

WHY CREATIVITY?

Creativity is needed in everyday life, but especially people that

are working with children or with youngsters have to use new

and fresh ideas all the time, to gain attention and to make

workshops interesting. So we decided to collect our knowledge,

all useful informations about creativity and tools that are needed

to bring it out. Because of existence of Youth in Action

programme it was possible for us to share knowledge and

informations with youth workers from other EU youth

organizations.

YOUTH IN ACTION PROGRAM

Youth in Action is the EU programme for young people aged 15-

28 (in some cases 13-30). It aims to inspire a sense of active

citizenship, solidarity and tolerance among young Europeans and

to involve them in shaping the Union's future. Programme

promotes mobility within and beyond the EU borders, non-

formal learning and intercultural dialogue, and encourages the

inclusion of all young people, regardless of their educational,

social and cultural background. Duration of YiA programme is

from year 2007 to 2013, for those seven years budget is 885

million Euros, and programme include EU Member States,

Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey, the EU neighbors

Page 11: be creactive! YiA TC

11

(Eastern Europe and Caucasus, the Mediterranean region, South-

East Europe) and other partner countries in the world.

5 ACTIONS

Action 1 - Youth for Europe. This action encourages young

people's active citizenship, participation and creativity through

youth exchanges, youth initiatives and youth democracy

projects.

Action 2 - European Voluntary Service this action helps young

people to develop their sense of solidarity by participating, either

individually or in group, in non-profit, unpaid voluntary activities

abroad.

Action 3 - Youth in the World promotes partnerships and

exchanges among young people and youth organizations across

the world.

Action 4 - Youth Support Systems includes various measures to

support youth workers and youth organizations and improve the

quality of their activities.

Action 5 – Support for European Cooperation on youth field

supports youth policy co-operation at European level, in

particular by facilitating dialogue between young people and

policy makers.

Page 12: be creactive! YiA TC

12

ACTION 4.3

Through Youth in Action programme we organized training

course, we invited 30 youth workers from 9 different countries

and we spend 6 days in Slovenia, where we learned, shared

experience and had fun on really creative and active way - So

title of training course was “BE CREACTIVE!”

In front of you is one of results of “Be creactive!” training course.

It is e – brochure, which contains some tips and tools that can be

used to bring out some creative ideas, collection of games which

could be played during sessions or meetings, to increase

productivity, and some ideas for project, that could be realized

some day.

Page 13: be creactive! YiA TC

13

TOOLS FOR CREATING NEW IDEAS

BRAINSTORMING

What is it?

The best-known creative tool;

to brainstorm is to use a set of specific rules and techniques

which encourage and spark off new ideas which would never

have happened under normal circumstances;

best done using an independent facilitator who manages the

process (so the group can focus on the creative task);

can be shorter or longer, depending on the difficulty of the

problem and the motivation of the group.

Rules:

No criticism,

go for quantity,

crazy ideas are welcome,

built on others ideas.

How to use it?

PREPARE THE GROUP

Page 14: be creactive! YiA TC

14

DEFINE THE PROBLEM: Describe the problem for which ideas

are wanted and ensure everyone understands it. Write it

down on a flipchart and tape it to the wall.

GENERATE IDEAS: Create and collect ideas. People are calling

out ideas and the facilitator writes them down on a flipchart

(keep ideas visible to help trigger further ideas).

REDUCE IDEAS: Best done another time, another day or even

by another group. Usually, however, it is done immediately

after the idea creation session. There are number of ways of

reducing ideas such as everyone voting for favorites or just

discussing and seeing what comes to the surface.

Why is it good?

You find a solution.

You can get some good ideas for next project.

You increase you creativity.

More pleasant working environment.

Better group relations.

What can go wrong?

Participants are not prepared to cooperate,

participants are not comfortable,

one participant tries to be in charge.

Page 15: be creactive! YiA TC

15

POST UP

How to use it?

DEFINE THE PROBLEM IN THE NORMAL WAY AND MAKE

SURE IT IS VISIBLE TO ALL OF THE TEAM.

PRIME THE TIME: Tape or pin up paper on the wall. Two or

three flip-chart pages together, side-by-side give a good

working area. Give everyone Post-It Note pads plus fiber-tip

pens. Tell them to always write one idea per Post-It Note.

SILENT WRITING OF IDEAS: Start with everyone silently

writing down ideas, one per Post-It Note. They should not at

this time stick their Post-It Notes up on the wall (the focus is

on capturing ideas).

POST UP THE IDEAS: The team then posts up their ideas on

the wall. A good way of doing this is to have each person take

turns to post one idea. The person posting up the idea reads

it out and everyone else listens. If any posted idea triggers

other ideas for anyone in the team, they can write them on

more Post-It Notes and add them to their pile. When all ideas

are posted, then you can also use other creative methods to

generate even more ideas.

SHUFFLING AND EXPLORATION: When you run out of ideas,

you can move the Post-It Notes around to group to gather

ideas into themes or otherwise explore further.

Page 16: be creactive! YiA TC

16

Beware when combining ideas of ending up with a vague

'generalized' idea that loses the essence of some its more original

constituents.

How it works?

The Post-Up works in several ways:

First, it allows people to work in parallel, thus speeding the

session and getting everyone engaged at once;

it also gets people emotionally engaged as they are writing

their own ideas rather than have other people write or

interpret them;

posting up one idea at a time by person ensures equality

through the team and also allows that each idea is considered

by all team members.

When to use it?

Use it when you want to create lots of new ideas;

use it with groups to get everyone engaged together;

use it when you have the space for everyone to get around

the post-up area (smaller groups, up to about six or seven,

are better for this);

although this is primarily a group method, you can also do it

yourself.

Page 17: be creactive! YiA TC

17

BRAINMAPPING

How to use it?

FORM THE TEAM: Get together a group of people who all

have creative problems that they want solving and sit them in

a circle. It can be around a table, although a more creative

approach is a circle of chairs. In any case, ensure they can

write on a piece of paper.

WRITE THE PROBLEM: Each person writes their problem in

the centre of the page. The usual approach is to write the

problem as a single clear statement, such as “How to increase

security awareness in office”.

ADD A STIMULUS: Each person now passes their page to their

left (or their right, if you like). When everyone has received

the page from the person next to them, each person draws

one branch leading off from the original problem and adds a

single stimulus that will be used later to trigger further

thoughts. This may be single word or a short phrase. A

stimulus may be simple and logical, such as 'doors' for the

security example, or it may be more outlandish. The key thing

to remember is that it should be helpful for triggering further

creative ideas.

COMPLETE THE STIMULUS: This process is now repeated,

with each person handing on their page and receiving

Page 18: be creactive! YiA TC

18

another. Do not, at this time, add sub-elements to the

stimulus, but rather add main stimuli that branch off the

central problem. Eventually, each page should arrive back at

the problem owner, with a set of stimuli branching off around

it.

DEVELOP THE IDEAS: Now the process continues, with the

pages being repeatedly written on (one idea at a time) and

passed on. Each person now looks at a stimulus and adds

either a sub-stimulus or a more complete thought. This

process repeats, with people adding an idea and passing it on

until either you run out of time or the ideas slow down. The

completed brain mapping diagram is then given to its grateful

originator.

Example:

Page 19: be creactive! YiA TC

19

When to use it?

Use it when individuals in a group have different problems.

Use it to solve multiple problems at the same time.

You can also use it to solve individual problems.

Use it when the people prefer to work quietly rather than in a

verbal, 'shouting it out' session.

Another use is as an ice-breaker with a mid-sized audience.

Page 20: be creactive! YiA TC

20

ROLE PLAY

How to use it?

CHOOSE A ROLE: Pick a person. It can be anybody you like.

GET INTO CHARACTER: Close your eyes and think about the

character. See them acting in the way they normally act. Float

around them, watching them and absorbing their essential

actions. Then slide into them. Feel their body around you.

Hear their thoughts. Think their thoughts. Feel what they are

feeling. Be the person. And open your eyes.

PLAY THE ROLE: Act like the person would act in the

situation. Walk around like they do. Let them walk around the

problem. Use their gestures. Say what they would say about

it. Have them offer ideas. You can also have everyone in

different roles. Have discussions between characters about

the problem. What would each do? Have a in-role

brainstorm. Have fun. It's allowed.

When to use it?

Use it as a break from normal ideation sessions, to stimulate

different thinking.

Use it when people are happy to try 'something different'.

Use it when you have a bunch of extraverts (it is seldom

effective with introverts).

Page 21: be creactive! YiA TC

21

You can also use it when exploring how to implement ideas,

to play out how people may respond to the idea.

How it works?

By getting out of your own character, you are also mentally

getting out of your own way of thinking. By getting into another

person (in the way that an actor does), you take on that person's

characteristics and find it easier to think like them. Moving the

way they move helps the association also. Getting into another

character also legitimizes thinking differently, helping you to feel

ok about 'acting strangely'!

Page 22: be creactive! YiA TC

22

TALKSTREAMING

How to use it?

FIND A FRIEND: Find someone who is patient and can listen

for a long period without interruption. If you cannot find

someone, talk to the dog or get a tape-recorder.

TALK AND TALK AND TALK: Just talk to the person. About

anything or anyone. The goal is just to talk, non-stop. If you

run out of things to say, just keep going. Talk rubbish if you

have to. Talk and talk and talk. And eventually, you will find

yourself unblocked and ideas wills start to appear again.

When to use it?

Use it when you are stuck and are stuck in a rut of

constrained thinking.

Use when you need to find more ideas.

How it works?

This approach works by emptying the conscious mind of what is

concerning it and anything else that may be lurking in the

shadows. Just getting things out gives space for more ideas to be

drawn up from the subconscious.

Page 23: be creactive! YiA TC

23

WRITESTREAMING

How to use it?

GO HIDE SOMEWHERE: Find a place where you can be alone

for a good deal of time. Make it somewhere comfortable,

where you can write. Take lots of writing paper and a variety

of pens and pencils.

WRITE AND WRITE AND WRITE: sit and write, first write out

what is at the top of your mind. Get out all your grumbles and

complaints. When you run out of immediate things to write,

start on something else. Anything will do, and you should

stop only to rest your arm and take some light refreshment.

And eventually, you will get through your block. The process

takes some people hours and other people days. All it needs

is persistence.

When to use it?

Use it when you are stuck and are stuck in a rut of

constrained thinking;

use when you need to find more ideas;

use it when you are more introverted, and verbal streaming is

too uncomfortable;

use it when you are writing something creative and are

getting stuck;

Page 24: be creactive! YiA TC

24

use it when you do not have someone to do verbal streaming

with;

use it when it works better for you than verbal streaming!

How it works?

This approach works by emptying the conscious mind of what is

concerning it and anything else that may be lurking in the

shadows. Just getting things out gives space for more ideas to be

drawn up from the subconscious.

Page 25: be creactive! YiA TC

25

VERBAL CHECK LIST FOR CREATIVITY

What is it?

Individual (rather than group) technique;

idea behind the verbal checklist: an existing product or

service, whether one's own or a competitor's, can be

improved if one applies a series of questions to it and pursues

the answers to see where they may lead;

typical checklist session might last from fifteen minutes to an

hour or more;

in a group members can compare their answers and build on

each other's suggestions;

one of the most important things about using checklists is

that you must do it properly; don’t skim through the list,

spend time on every single item on the list for the technique

to work;

Osborn took nine verbs to apply to the product or service and

then added questions to expand on the ideas promoted by

each of the nine words.

Page 26: be creactive! YiA TC

26

Verbal checklist for creativity:

Page 27: be creactive! YiA TC

27

Steps:

Identify the product or service to be modified.

Apply each of the verbs on the checklist to suggest changes in

the product or service.

Use each of the definitional words for the listed verbs in

identifying possible changes.

Review your changes to determine which ones meet your

solutions criteria.

Blank check list:

Page 28: be creactive! YiA TC

28

To use this checklist to generate new ideas, enter the name of

the product or service in the blank at the top of the page. Then

apply the verbs and definitions from the Osborn Checklist to that

item, recording your new ideas in the blanks by the verbs.

Page 29: be creactive! YiA TC

29

Page 30: be creactive! YiA TC

30

METHOD 6 – 3 – 5

What is it?

The name comes from the process of having 6 people write 3

ideas in 5 minutes. Each person has a blank 6-3-5 worksheet.

Process:

Write a problem statement at the top of the worksheet;

write 3 ideas on the top row of the worksheet in 5 minutes in

a complete and concise sentence (6-10 words);

at the end of 5 minutes (or when everyone has finished

writing) pass the worksheet to the person on your right;

then you add three more ideas. The process continues until

the worksheet is completed;

Page 31: be creactive! YiA TC

31

the process continues until each participant gets the original

piece of paper back;

there will now be a total of 108 ideas on the 6 worksheets.

Advantages:

The “author” of a creative idea can be identified

(motivational factor);

very easy to use;

the method does not require a moderator;

the innovative potential of a group can be used;

all participants are active and involved;

no premature discussions;

a useful idea is systematically developed further.

Disadvantages:

Some participants might have problems describing their ideas

concisely the idea is not clear enough for the other so that

participants;

participants might feel reassured and restricted in their

thinking by the time limit of 5 minutes;

may generate less creative solutions because of the mostly

individual nature of the contributions does not take

advantage of group discussion.

Page 32: be creactive! YiA TC

32

HOW TO KILL AN IDEA?!?

SAY…

A good idea, but…

Bad idea!

It needs more study!

People won’t like it!

To hard to organize!

We have never don it that way before…

Ignore what someone has said.

Is anyone crazy enough to try that?

Let ME show it to our manager!

HOW TO HELP AN IDEA!?!

SAY…

Yes, and…

That is good idea – explain…

Great, let’s try it!

Let’s test it!

Tell me more…

How can we make it work?

Page 33: be creactive! YiA TC

33

I like it!

Ignore the way it is done now.

Always:

Be enthusiastic;

be interested;

listen;

try to understand;

do not interrupt until they are finished;

build on their idea with them.

Page 34: be creactive! YiA TC

34

GAMES

During training course we played some games. Games are good

for lifting up the mood of participants and to create a good

harmonic team. We divided games in three groups. In first group

belong so called NAME GAMES. Aim of those games is to get to

know each other. In second group we count in games which are

used to rise up some energy and get people in a mood for

working. Those kinds of games are called ENERGIZERS. In third

group we count in games through which people bond and

connect, those games are called TRUST/TEAM BUILDING GAMES.

NAME GAMES

COURTAIN

Description:

The participants have to form two groups. Each group sits down

one against other. In the middle two participants are holding the

curtain. Each of two groups is picking someone inside the group

and he/she have to go in front of the curtain. Than the curtain

falls and those two, which are looking at each other, have to say

the name of the other. The one which is faster wins and the

other must to go into his group.

Page 35: be creactive! YiA TC

35

BALL-NET

Description:

The group should stand in perfectly round circle. The leader of

the game grabs the ball and starts to throw it around.

He asks the group to throw a ball to a person, who had not

received the ball yet, and participants must remember the name

of the person, which they had been thrown the ball at. The ball

travels from one person to the other as if building the invisible

net. In the end the leader receives the ball.

In the second round he starts to count the time, how long does it

takes to build an invisible ball net.

The group tries this for couple times; could the group improve

themselves from try to try?

BLANK MAP

Description:

Facilitator put blank piece of paper on wall and sticks a sticker in

the middle and say: My name is “NAME”, and I come from

“COUNTRY”. All participants have to improvise where their

country is and say their names at laud.

Page 36: be creactive! YiA TC

36

ENERGIZERS

JAMES BOND 007 / ELEPHANT

Description:

The task is to point at a person in the circle saying “toaster”. One

person jumps UP and DOWN as a toast in the morning, between

the arms of the left and right neighbor who hold his hands.

When another activity is called out they can stop. Other activities

can be elephant: the indicated person makes an elephant trunk

and the neighbors hold their arms to make the ears. Another

picture is James Bond: the indicated person shoots an imaginary

pistol and blows the smoke away, while the two neighbors play

the bond girls, touching James in the middle .Another picture can

be ANY THING YOU LIKE! Examples: palm tree, washing machine,

shower …

MADZINGA

Description:

Participants are standing in the circle. The one who starts has to

stretch the one part of the body and said “MA”. That is

continuing in the circle, in that way that everybody must do the

same thing. When the last person does that the whole group

says “DZINGA” and puts their arms together.

Page 37: be creactive! YiA TC

37

PEOPLE TO PEOPLE

Description:

Participants are standing in pairs. Facilitator gives rithem with

hands and says: nose to nose – pairs have to touch with noses;

knee to knee – pairs have to touch with knees…and so on. When

facilitator says: people to people, everybody have to change

their pair.

DANCE

Description:

Put some chairs in the middle of the room, all participants have

to sit on chairs, when music starts to play, they have to stand up

and start to dance around. During their dancing facilitator

removes one chair. When music stops playing, everybody has to

sit on chairs, and the one who has no chair is out. Energizer goes

on and on, until there is only one chair left, and one winner.

ORANGE

Description:

Participants are standing in circle. They have to pass orange

around the circle without touching it with hands.

Page 38: be creactive! YiA TC

38

YOGA

Description:

Do some yoga or stretching to wake up in the morning. One

participant is leading others are repeating after him/her.

A LITTLE DUCK WITH A WING

Description:

Facilitator sings and show moves, participations are following:

A little, a little, a little duck with a wing (with one arm he shows

movements of one wing).

A little, a little, a little duck with wings (with both arms he shows

movements of both wings).

A little, a little, a little duck with a foot (he starts to hit ground

with one foot).

A little, a little, a little duck with feet (he starts to hit ground with

both feet).

A little, a little, a little duck with a…use your imagination!

Page 39: be creactive! YiA TC

39

TEAMBUILDING/TRUST GAMES

THE MOUSE AND THE CHEESE

Description:

Facilitator divides the whole group into two groups, almost the

same size. One group is representing the cheese with the holes

and the other mice. The group that represents the cheese has to

stand together with the arms and the legs crossed with each

other as much complicated as possible. The mice group has to

get across all the holes inside and at least across one hole on the

other outside of the cheese. When the mice get tired or if the

cheese falls apart, the roles can change. There should be more

than one mice climbing threw the cheese at the same time.

GORDIAN KNOT

Description:

Participants are standing in the circle, shoulder to shoulder, and

close their eyes. Than the whole group must step forward and

grabs another person’s arms; but it must not be neighbors. Now

they can open their eyes and try to entangle the knot.

Page 40: be creactive! YiA TC

40

STEPING STONES

Description:

Participants have to draw river on floor, and put some “stones”

in the river. All participants stand on one side of the river, and

they all have to come to another side, but there is a catch –

when you step of the stone it sinks down.

ROPE

Description:

Facilitator puts rope high from the ground. Participants are

standing on one side, and their task is to come to other side just

using their bodies.

SQUARE

Description:

Facilitator draw square on the floor. That square represents the

roof of really high building. Everybody stands shoulder to

shoulder on that building. On the end of the game participants

have to stand from the oldest to youngest, shoulder to shoulder,

but they are allowed to walk only on the rooftop – they have to

help one another, so no one falls down. There is a catch – there

must be complete silence during the game, they can only use

body language to communicate.

Page 41: be creactive! YiA TC

41

COIN

Description:

Everybody lays down on floor on their backs. Participants lay in

straight line, shoulder to shoulder, boy, girl, boy, girl.... Facilitator

puts coin on stomach of the first participant in row. Task is to get

coin from first participant to the last, without touching it with

arms.

KISS KILLER

Description:

Everybody write their names on little papers

and throw them in the bag. Then each one

picks up one paper, and he has to “kill” the

person, he picked. You kill person with a kiss on

the area of the face. But there are some rules:

no killing allowed during sleep, and if third

person sees you while you are killing…it doesn’t

count!

Page 42: be creactive! YiA TC

42

SECRET FRIEND

Description:

Everybody writes their names on little papers and throw them in

the bag. Then each one picks up one paper, and he/she has to be

a secret friend to the person he/she picked. He/she has to do

nice things for her/his secret friend during whole seminar. There

is a catch, the person that you are doing nice things for,
