Welcome to Bearsted Golf Club
Bearsted Golf Club, which is a members club, was established
in 1895. It is a superb parkland course set in the shadow of the
North Downs in Kent, providing a good test of golfing ability to
members and visitors alike. We welcome societies and green fee
or match visitors and offer superb facilities and excellent food
and drink in our clubhouse, which was built 2000.
Our members benefit from the many features associated with
a ‘members’ golf club. These include discounted bar prices,
an excellent restaurant and a full programme of competitions,
matches and social functions.
We have reciprocal agreements with a selection of other
‘member’ clubs throughout Kent, where our members are able
to play on weekdays at a reduced rate. Even more attractive, we
get courtesy of the course, by prior arrangement, at 44 other
members of the “1895 Club” throughout the UK and overseas.
We welcome guests, societies and visiting teams to enjoy our
splendid course and well-appointed clubhouse. The course
stretches to 6,381 off the white tees, its par of 71 offering a
fair test to golfers of all abilities. The greens, built to USGA-
specifications, are renowned for their quality.
Our club is situated on the outskirts of Maidstone, less than two
miles from either Junction 7 or 8 off the M20, making it easily
accessible from a wide area.

History of The Club
Bearsted Golf Club dates back to 1895, originally a nine-
hole course, built on 52 acres of land owned by Sir George
Hampson and known as Maidstone Golf Club. A keen golfer,
Sir George became the first president of the club and was to
be named Club Captain on no fewer than six occasions.
In 1914, Bearsted Golf Club was set up and remained on the
present site, while Maidstone Golf Club members moved to a
new course in Oakwood Park where they lasted until closure
in 1962. It is of interest that in 1891 another Maidstone Golf
Club was formed at East Hampton, New York and still exists
today. It is now one of the oldest and most exclusive golf clubs
in the United States.
The golf course has undergone many changes and
improvements over the years, notably in 1923 when with
the lease of more land the course was extended to 18-holes
measuring 5,137 yards. To mark the occasion, an exhibition
match was played between the great Harry Vardon (six times
Open Champion) and Mark Seymour, the professional at
Cobham. More than 200 people paid to watch the match, which
was duly won by Vardon, who was fortified before play began by
the consumption of several large whiskeys!Harry Vardon & Mark Seymour
www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk | 7
In 1979, after the acquisition of Seager Farm, the course was
lengthened still further to 6381 yards. Designed by Club
Professional Bob Henderson, the official opening of the extended
course was marked by a match featuring 30 professionals
including Max Faulkner, an Open champion, and former junior
member Paul Hoad together with 90 amateur players. West Ham
and England footballer Trevor Brooking was the special guest.
This was not Faulkner’s first visit to Bearsted. He also played in
an exhibition match in 1969 to raise money for Cancer Relief.
Bernard Gallagher, Brian Barnes and Nick Job also took part. The
club has played host to many exhibition games for charity and
Ryder Cup golfers Dai Rees and Peter Alliss were among those to
take part in a match in support of the Forces Aid Society in 1965.

History of The Club Continued
Other celebrities include Kent and England cricketing legends
Godfrey Evans and Leslie Ames, who were resident in Bearsted.
They showed their all-round sporting prowess by winning several
golf competitions in the 1950s.
A feature of Bearsted over the years has been our desire
to continue improving both the on-course and off-course
experience for members and visitors. A generous bequest by
our neighbour and friend, Kath Seager, allowed us to build the
spacious and welcoming clubhouse, which was opened in 2000.
We regard ourselves as a progressive club having replaced all the
greens in 1998/99, a new clubhouse in 2000 and Greenkeepers
facility in 2008. This year solar panels were installed on the roof
of the Greenkeepers facility; these will generate 250- kilowatt,
which will also feed the clubhouse, with the surplus earning an
income from the national grid.
Our efforts were rewarded when the Kent Golf Union invited
Bearsted Golf club to host the Kent Amateur Championship in
June 2013.

Applying for Membership
Bearsted is a members’ golf club – the land, buildings and all
equipment are wholly owned by the membership and run by
elected members of the club. We currently have memberships
available in all categories at Bearsted including Full, 5-Day,
Intermediate, Junior and Social. Our Secretary or a senior
member of the Club Committee would love to show you around.
The categories of membership are designed to accommodate all
levels of golfers, with a smooth progression from Junior to Full
Adult Membership. Attractive rates are available for Junior (aged
9-13 and 14-17) and Intermediate age groups (18-24 and 25-29).
There are also special memberships for students up to the age of
29, who are in full-time education.
If you are new to the area and don’t know any members, don’t
let that put you off. Call our Secretary and he will arrange for a
member, usually from the Club Committee, to contact you and
arrange to show you around the club, discuss your membership
options and if appropriate, sample the course by playing 9 holes.
If all goes well and your application is approved, this member
will act as your proposer. If you are just taking up golf, you will
be introduced to our Club Professional, who will be happy to
arrange a series of lessons to get you started prior to submitting
a membership application.
Whatever the circumstance, a very warm welcome awaits you
- so visit us soon and give it a try, you will not be disappointed.
For more details, please visit our website or call our Secretary on
01622 738198 or email: [email protected]

Golf at Bearsted
Our members enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the
year. Aside from tees reserved for competitions, there are only
tee bookings on a Sunday morning, which means that unlike
many other clubs, you can just turn up and play.
Men
The Men’s section at Bearsted is fairly strong, with two teams
entered in the Kent League, which is a scratch competition
featuring four pairs playing fourball betterball matchplay. Always
played on a Sunday, matches are followed by a convivial dinner.
Bearsted also takes part in the Guilford Trophy, a scratch team
knockout throughout East Kent.
There are many friendly matches, both men and mixed with
other clubs in Kent. Generally, there are around 20 fixtures
throughout the season, with the away matches providing the
opportunity to enjoy some of the county’s other excellent
courses. The friendly matches for the men are generally played
on a Wednesday and the mixed matches on Sundays, with a
dinner to follow.
There are also five men’s and mixed knockout competitions
running throughout the summer and a Winter League running
from October to March.
The most prized trophy is the Club Championship, featuring 18
holes of golf on a Saturday afternoon and another 18 on the
following morning before an agreeable lunch.
The keen golfer in search of a casual and friendly game is never
short of company, with informal roll-ups most weekdays.
www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk | 15
Seniors
The Over-60s and Over-70s also enjoy league competition.
Home and away matches, played on weekdays, take place
against Gillingham, Mid-Kent, Rochester and Cobham,
Redlibbets, Sheerness and Sittingbourne. The format is fourball
betterball, with 5 pairs playing off a maximum handicap of 18
and 21 respectively.
At the end of the season, there are two further events; the first
is when all the teams in the respective leagues gather at one of
the clubs for an ‘End of Season Jamboree’, the winner being the
team with the highest aggregate stableford score; the second
event is when the respective winners of the 60s and 70s leagues
gather for a final play-off. In parallel with these league matches,
there is a home and away knockout competition involving clubs
throughout Kent.
There are also 12 home and away friendly matches against local
clubs with a lunch to follow. In addition, the Veterans Section run
singles and pairs knockout competitions and at least seven major
trophy competitions, one of the most popular being the Vets
Open, which is a team competition and attracts entries from 30
clubs all over Kent.
The Veterans Section also organise less formal ‘pound in
the middle’ competitions on 2 Monday mornings a month.
Otherwise its roll up, mix up and play most Monday, Wednesday
and Friday mornings.
16 | www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk
Ladies
The Ladies enjoy around 16 matches (eight home, eight away)
through the golfing season from March to early November,
several of which are longstanding fixtures.
Most matches are fourball betterball, but some feature singles
play. Good company and good golf is the order of the day, with
enjoyment of paramount importance. A light meal tends to
follow the competition.
The county’s premier competitions are well supported, with
teams entered in the Bradley Cook, a five-a-side scratch team
knockout tournament played in handicap order, and the Coombe
Cup for golfers over the age of 68, a trophy which was won by
the club in 2011.
Golf at Bearsted Continued
www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk | 17
Then there is the Pearson Trophy, a team event played in a
group format over the winter followed by a knockout phase with
the eventual winners going on to represent Kent against the
champions from Hertfordshire, Surrey and Middlesex.
A team is also entered in The Mail on Sunday National Golf Club
Classic, a hugely popular national event.
At home, members enjoy one medal and one stableford a
month. There are a great many honours board competitions, the
most prestigious of which is the Club Championship, a 36-hole
stroke play event played over a weekend, generally in August.
Juniors
Our Juniors are not restricted to playing at specific times and
those with active handicaps are able to enter club competitions
as well as the separate competitions we run for the Junior
members.

Visitors
Visitors with a current handicap certificate (active or inactive
handicap) are welcome to come and play at our club on
weekdays and at certain times at weekends. We are a fairly
relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and
standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly
as possible.
All visitors must report to the Pro Shop and obtain and display
a bag tag before commencing play. Please ensure your golf
shoes are fitted with soft spikes; our Professional will help you if
required.
We do not have a tee booking system in operation, but it is
advisable to phone in advance to ensure there is no competition
being held at the club at the time you are hoping to play. Our
Professional will advise you as to the best time to play for a more
relaxed and enjoyable round.
In common with other clubs we do insist on a minimum standard
of smart casual dress at all times, details of which can be found
on our website.
Reduced rates are available to guests of members, juniors
and holders of the Kent County Card or members of the Open
Fairways, Telegraph Open Fairways and Telegraph Subscribers
Club. Often we run special offers during the year, details of which
can again be found on our website.
Our bar and restaurant are open throughout the day. You are
always welcome in the clubhouse to enjoy a social drink or
friendly meal.

Golf Societies
We welcome societies on weekdays throughout the year. Our
superb course will guarantee you a great day of golf. Good food
and facilities await you upon your return to the clubhouse to
ensure a memorable day. Our staff and Professional are on hand
to assist you in any way they can.
We have several ready-made packages available or are happy to
customise a day to your exact requirements. Start the day with
a tasty bacon roll, followed by some challenging golf on our 18-
hole course. After your game, relax and unwind in our clubhouse
where you will find a comprehensive selection of beers, lagers,
spirits, wines and soft drinks.
We pride ourselves on our versatility and adaptability and if we
do not have a specific package to meet your particular needs,
simply ask and we will do everything we can to accommodate
you.
The golf shop provides a comprehensive range of equipment
as well as being able to arrange golf lessons and prizes. We can
also organise longest drive and nearest the pin markers should
you wish.
Our caterers are highly regarded and are very experienced at
keeping hungry golfing societies happy. The three-course meal
features the likes of homemade soup of the day with fresh
baked bread rolls or a fan melon with raspberry coulis. You
will find a roast of the day and fillet of salmon among the main
course selections (vegetarian option available on request) and
make sure you leave enough room for dessert. Will it be fresh
fruit salad, apple crumble or chocolate fudge cake served warm
with cream?

Open Competitions
We usually run five Open events each year, where golfers with
a current active handicap are warmly invited to enter. These
events are very popular and you are advised to submit your
entry early. Places are usually allocated on a first come first
served basis.
First up is the Veteran’s Open, generally held in the middle of
May. This is an 18-hole Stableford competition for teams of
three visitors plus one Bearsted member, with the two best
scores on each hole to count.
The Bearsted Open, held in early July, is a Kent Order of Merit
event played as a 36-hole medal for players with a handicap
of 18 or below. There are prizes for the best scratch and
handicap score.
There are two competitions at the end of July; the Ladies Open,
which is a three-ball team event and the Junior [Under 18] Open
an 18-hole medal competition, which again is a Kent Order of
Merit event.
The final Open event of the season is the Mixed Open. An 18-
hole greensomes Stableford, played in fours and usually takes
place in early September. Entry details and dates are available to
download from our website, www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk
Please note that adherence to our dress code and soft spikes
only rule is a condition of entry.

Golfers and guests can enjoy a drink and light snacks in the

Social Activities
Bearsted rightly prides itself as being a club run for the benefit of
its members and there is a spirit of togetherness that can be felt
in the clubhouse just as much as out on the course.
While there is nothing the members enjoy more than spending
several hours attempting to master the course, they are not
averse to enjoying themselves off the course as well.
The club has an active social calendar that includes popular
events such as quiz nights, murder mystery, dinner dances and
musical entertainment evenings, including tribute nights. With
a bridge club and even indoor bowls on occasion, there really is
something to appeal to everyone.
Notable dates in the calendar such as Christmas, New Year’s Eve
and Valentines are celebrated and we are always looking for new
ways to make full use of the club’s superb caterers.
Members are able to make use of our facilities for functions such
as weddings, birthday parties and wedding anniversaries. Local
sports clubs and institutions also make use of our premises on a
regular basis for functions and celebrations.

Tour the Course
In two loops of nine holes, our mature
parkland course unusually starts and
finishes with a par 3. The first is a gentle
opening hole, but look out for the railway
running along the right. Indeed, all the
early holes require solid tee shots, and
generally favour the player who draws the ball, as most of the
trouble is found on the right of many fairways.
Water – either in the form of ponds or ditches, or both – is to be
found on several of the holes, particularly on the inward nine.
The course features some beautiful landscaped and challenging
holes, many with excellent views of the North Downs and the
beautiful surrounding Kent countryside.
Our course is beautiful all year round, but some of the autumn
colours in particular are spectacular.
Our greens are all constructed to USGA specification. Our tees
have circular distance mark plates set into the ground, and our
fairways have green posts denoting 150 yards to the centre of
green. Measuring a maximum length of 6,381 yards off the white
tees and a Standard Scratch Score of 71 matching its par (73
for Ladies), our course is a challenge for golfers of all abilities to
enjoy.
Practice facilities include a large practice putting green, driving
nets and practice ground - all situated close to the clubhouse
and first tee.

tips from our PGA-qualified Professional.
Hole 1 (Railway) 144 yards, par 3
Our course starts with a short par three with a
difficult green sloping down from the bank on the
Tour the Course Continued
Hole 2 (Old School) 342 yards, par 4
A difficult blind drive on this straight par four hole,
with out of bounds on the left and trouble waiting in
the trees on the right.
Hole 3 (Sir George Hampson) 462 yards, par 4
A very long left-to-right dogleg hole which is difficult
to reach in two shots, especially with two fairway
bunkers waiting to catch out your second shot.
www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk | 35
Hole 4 (Honeyhill Woods) 433 yards, par 4
A good drive will leave you well placed to reach the
green with your second shot. However, mind the
ditch and out of bounds on the right.
Hole 5 (The Shaw) 363 yards, par 4
A straight fairway to the green, but with a ditch
hazard to the right. Please play a provisional ball
if you think your tee shot may have gone into the
woods on the right, but you must play your original
ball if you find it.
Hole 6 (The Hump) 508 yards, par 5
A long par five sloping from left to right, with longer
grass and small ditch (not classed as a hazard)
strategically placed to help stop your ball from going
into the woods - surprisingly, on the right again.
Please play a provisional ball if you think your tee
shot may have gone into the woods on the right, but
you must play your original ball if you find it.
36 | www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 7 (Up And Over) 388 yards, par 4
A right to left dogleg to the green located in the
valley, where the trees to the left often block out a
second shot to the green.
Tour the Course Continued
Hole 9 (Halfway) 379 yards, par 4
This very inviting hole is frequently used for the
longest drive competitions, but be careful. Out of
bounds awaits a loose tee shot to the left, as does
the pond on the right.
Hole 8 (Downs View) 178/214 yards, par 3
This par three involves a tee shot across a valley to
the well-guarded green.
www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk | 37
Hole 10 (Twin Oaks) 295 yards, par 4
A relatively short par four with the green just beyond
the two tall trees in the distance.
Hole 12 (Water Meadow) 399 yards, par 4
A good straight drive is called for on this very long
par 4 hole, with trouble again waiting for a loose tee
shot to the right and the pond on the right for the
long hitters.
Hole 11 (Centenary Bridge) 324 yards, par 4
A dogleg right with a very inviting tee shot down the
hill, and over the stream and bridge. Beware of the
ponds either side of the fairway.
Fish on the Green is established as one of the very top ‘fine’ seafood restaurants in Kent.
The restaurant is part of the attractive setting that makes up ‘one of the prettiest village greens
in England’, formerly a stable block to the original Coaching Inn.
Naturally the menu reflects the culture of the restaurant with ‘trawler fresh’ fish and shellfish,
superb local farm produce not to mention the 28-32 day, dry aged Scottish beef from Marchants of Bethersden. All prepared and
served in a skilled yet simple manner.
Proud to be awarded an AA Rossette (with strong belief a second one is on its way!) and entered

Hole 13 (Birling House) 502 yards, par 5
A long straight tee shot is needed on this par five
which bends to the left. Strategically placed bunkers
await each shot from tee to green.
Hole 14 (Reservoir) 382 yards, par 4
A tee shot to a wide open fairway sloping from left
to right where a ditch and bunker often catch out the
unaware. A second shot which strays into the ditch
across the fairway is rarely rewarded with a playable
third shot.
Hole 15 (Seager Way) 511 yards, par 5
A ditch across the fairway is in range for the long
hitters, and the green is located at the top of the hill
on this long par five.

Practice Facilities
We have excellent practice facilities for those looking to
work on lowering their handicap. Coupled with the tuition
offered by our Professional, it represents the complete game
improvement programme.
As visitors take the short walk from the car park to the
clubhouse they cannot help but notice the immaculately
prepared practice putting green in front of the clubhouse. This
is the perfect way to acclimatise oneself to the superb USGA-
specification greens.
For those wishing to practice the long game there is a
practice area to the rear of the clubhouse between the 2nd
and 9th fairways. At either end of the practice ground there
are greens with bunkers to work on perfecting those up and
downs or sand saves, which can make the difference between
an average round and a very good one.
A pair of practice nets can be found by the members’ car park,
which are ideal for getting loose before taking to the course.

Find Us
The Club is located three miles east of Maidstone, Kent, and less
than two miles from either junction 7 (Maidstone/ Sittingbourne)
or junction 8 (Motorway Services/ Leeds Castle) of the M20
motorway.
From junction 7 of the M20
Follow Maidstone signs to first roundabout then take first exit
(left) heading for Bearsted Green; go past Newnham Court Garden
Village, straight across the next roundabout and follow this road
for one mile, and look for the turning on the left into the club
about 300 yards past the railway bridge.
From junction 8 of the M20
Follow A20 signs towards Maidstone (right at first roundabout),
and after one mile (before Tudor Park Hotel) turn right towards
Bearsted Green. Go past the village green and the Railway Station.
The entrance to the club is about 300 yards on your right.
Public transport
The nearest railway station is Bearsted, which is less than 200
yards from the clubhouse. Southeastern run frequent services
from London Victoria to Ashford International via Maidstone

the slope to the clubhouse. Initial entry should be via the front
door, and if not already unlocked, please gain entry by use of the
adjacent intercom speaker.
Disabled members, guests, and visitors are invited to park in the
disabled bays adjacent the main clubhouse, or if a suitable space
is available - directly behind the clubhouse (driving through the
