Bow Watch – August ‘15

Summer just keeps cooking along –

and it has been a great one so far at

BYSC.

This year’s BYSC Summer Camp pro-

gram has come to a close and by all ac-

counts was a tremendous success. To

quote myself from last month, “big kudos

to Dylan and his staff”. We owe a big

round of thanks to everyone who contrib-

uted to make it happen. I have had sever-

al attendees (not just their parents/

grandparents) comment to me on how

much they enjoyed their experience and

that they look forward to coming back next year. Again, to all – well done !

And ditto to the staff of Junior Sailing of Beaufort’s ‘Learn to Sail’ program;

which was also a great success.

Despite the heat, the high level of member activity in all areas of the club con-

tinues. So, if you haven’t already – and even if you have – come join in. Go for a

swim, play some tennis, do some kayaking or SUPing, do some crabbing, watch

the sun set, have a cookout (or attend Steak night), have a cocktail, maybe even go

for a sail – a lot to choose from.

For the sailors, it is about time to pull the covers off the boats and do those mi-

nor repairs and little upgrades you need to do to be ready – Labor Day and the

start of the fall season is almost here.

General Manager’s Message: I am delighted to be the new General Manager and want to say how warmly my wife Mary and I have been welcomed to

the BYSC community. I have attended a Final Friday, an Auxiliary meeting and look forward to meeting more members at

upcoming events. Mary and I will be attending Sunset Friday and Steak Night. When you see me at the club, don’t be shy—

say hello. I will do the same.

I am thankful that Sam Levin, Alan Dechovitz, Chuck Rushing, Ashley, Dylan and Sabrena are helping me learn the

ropes. I am especially grateful to Milledge for working tirelessly to orient me. It will take a few weeks to see how most

things run and I hope that not too many balls (especially mooring) will be dropped during the transition.

For the past two years Mary, Sadie (our labradoodle) and I have been living aboard our Monk 36 trawler. We cruised as

far north as Ocracoke, NC and this past winter we spent two months cruising the Abacos. We have owned Together for four

years and prior to that sailed a Catalina 34 for two years. Like many of you, we have a passion for boating and the water.

While we loved our cruising years, we both miss being part of a community. As we headed north from the Bahamas this

May, we felt it was time to find a town that we loved and to become part of a community again. We have visited Beaufort

often over the past dozen years and it was easy to make this charming town our new home. We moved into our house at Bat-

tery Point three weeks ago.

I know the call to community and the yacht club stems from my career as an independent school teacher and administra-

tor. We both miss being part of a vibrant community that has a common purpose. Prior to our cruising life, I was the Head

of Upper School at Cary Academy for ten years and before that the Headmaster at St. John’s~Ravenscourt School in Winni-

peg, Manitoba, Canada. Mary was the Director of Development for a residential homeless shelter in Durham, NC and a vi-

brant part of the schools we lived at in Canada. We are Canadians and permanent US residents for the past thirteen

years. You can blame us for the Arctic blasts that I hope will not reach Beaufort. If they do, I know how to drive a snow-

plow.

Prior to becoming an administrator, I taught biology, chemistry and physics. After school and during the summers, I was

a whitewater canoe and kayak instructor, rock climbing instructor and residential, summer camp director. Being on or near

the water has been a big part of our lives and we feel very fortunate to be part of an organization that focuses on boating and

friendship.

Our son Christopher is a teacher in Vancouver, Canada. He and his wife and 9 month old daughter went on their first

overnight canoe trip this summer. We took Christopher on his first canoe trip at that age and we are delighted that the family

tradition continues. Mary and I met onstage in the musical The Fantastics and in keeping with family tradition, our daughter

Heather is a musical theater actress. She has often toured in the US and we will let you know if she is performing in the area.

We love the theatre and cooking. We bought a smoker for the first time and made our first smoked ribs last weekend. I

may never grill ribs again!

Over the coming years, I will be working with the Board to chart the club’s course and invite you to share your thoughts

BYSC Labor Day Picnic & Regatta

C’mon out for the Labor Day Regatta & Picnic. The regatta will be held Sunday & Monday and the Picnic is Monday.

For you sailors the Notice of Race will be posted on the BYSC web site

(www.byscnet.com). Here are the highlights: Classes: MC Scows, Lasers, JY15s, Sunfish, 420s, Optimists, BICs Sunday Schedule: Noon: Registration 1PM: Skippers Meeting 2PM: First Start Monday Schedule: 1PM: First Start Trophies will be presented at the picnic on Monday. Food! The BYSC Auxiliary will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs and sides

from 4-6PM. Meals are $10. Children under 12 can eat hot dogs for free. Games! For non-sailing kids there will be games on-land for ages 5-12 to

enjoy; bean bag toss, sandcastle building, ladderball & more. The activities will be set up near the playground and will be available starting at 1pm on Monday.

For the adults there is Cornhole. If there is enough interest we will or-

ganize a Cornhole tournament from 2-4PM. Please respond to Dave Roos

Dear Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club, Thank you for your support this summer. We started the camp Monday, June 8th, and we had our

last sun filled day on Friday, July 24th. We had six weeks of successful summer camp and we could not have done it without our great staff. If you have the chance, please thank your summer camp counselors on a job well done!

Our summer camp was designed to be water-sports oriented, and we took campers swimming, kayaking, paddle-boarding, boating, tubing and fishing. We also had fun in the sun playing field games and just floating around in the Beaufort River.

Our program is always evolving to fit the needs of the membership. I sent out a BYSC Summer Camp Survey through our EZ Register system to all registered families. By taking the time to fill out this survey, we can make improvements to our camp next year.

Thank you very much for helping us give your children a safe, fun and skill building summer sea-son. We look forward to providing a great summer camp next year!
