This is the wear and tear type of arthritis that hap- pens when you lose cartilage in your joints. I am a bit young for this to happen, but it is not uncommon for folks in their 40s to develop this issue. Millions of people older than me deal with this issue every day. When I finally understood the diagnosis, I was not really that worried, and there are things I can do to slow the progression. It did, however, strike me that this was some- thing that was because of my age, and although it could be man- aged, it would never go away, at least not without a hip replace- ment. It was one more marker that my life has changed, and that the time in my life when I was younger and didn’t have to worry about such things was now over. We have a ten- dency in our society to idolize youth, as if being older was some- how bad. Perhaps we have trouble embracing change, embrac- ing that we are now different than we were before? If we look at the ministry of Jesus, though, we see that he was all about the differences in life and paid little attention to what was idolized by society. Jesus spent time with, helped and healed the old, young, sick, pariahs, and everyone in-between. Although Jesus did heal many who were sick, he did not turn them into something they were not. They might have been able to walk again, but they did not suddenly turn into 18 year olds. He was loving and accepting of people outside of social norms, but that unfortunately does not mean the rest of society was. If anything, all of this teaches me that no matter who we are or what period of our life we are in, Jesus loves and cares for us and insists that we have worth. It is easy to remember what we loved about the past or to idealize some portion of our life before. What is more difficult is to be comfortable and ok with where our life is now. THE PASTOR’S PEACE

Many church folks have been asking me over the last year

why I have been limping so much. For me, it was just a pain that

was always there, would get a bit better, and then get a bit

worse. I finally did go to a doctor, and with some x-rays and

some physical therapy, it was confirmed that I have osteoarthri-

tis of the hip. This is the wear and tear type of arthritis that hap-

pens when you lose cartilage in your joints. I am a bit young for

this to happen, but it is not uncommon for folks in their 40s to

develop this issue. Millions of people older than me deal with

this issue every day. When I finally understood the diagnosis, I

was not really that worried, and there are things I can do to slow

the progression. It did, however, strike me that this was some-

thing that was because of my age, and although it could be man-

aged, it would never go away, at least not without a hip replace-

ment. It was one more marker that my life has changed, and that

the time in my life when I was younger and didn’t have to worry

about such things was now over.

This is not a bad thing; life continues on and all of us age.

We all reach a point where things we used to be able to do when

we were younger are no longer things we can do. I think, how-

ever, that it is important to understand that any time in our life

can be good and useful, just in different ways. We have a ten-

dency in our society to idolize youth, as if being older was some-

how bad. Perhaps we have trouble embracing change, embrac-

ing that we are now different than we were before? If we look at

the ministry of Jesus, though, we see that he was all about the

differences in life and paid little attention to what was idolized

by society.

Jesus spent time with, helped and healed the old, young,

sick, pariahs, and everyone in-between. Although Jesus did heal

many who were sick, he did not turn them into something they

were not. They might have been able to walk again, but they did

not suddenly turn into 18 year olds. He was loving and accepting

of people outside of social norms, but that unfortunately does

not mean the rest of society was. If anything, all of this teaches

me that no matter who we are or what period of our life we are

in, Jesus loves and cares for us and insists that we have worth. It

is easy to remember what we loved about the past or to idealize

some portion of our life before. What is more difficult is to be

comfortable and ok with where our life is now.

What's the Least I Can Believe and Still Be a Christian? (A Book Study for Adults)

Our new book will start on Wednesday May 29th and will continue on Wednesday

nights at 7PM for four weeks, ending on Wednesday June 19th. The book we are reading is

What's the Least I Can Believe and Still Be a Christian? by Rev. Martin Thielen. The church

has purchased 7 copies for those who want to participate. Please see Pastor Brian to get

one of these copies. If those run out, you can pick up a copy at some bookstores or Amazon;

the ISBN number is (0664239382).

“Pastor and author Martin Thielen has compiled a list of ten things people need to believe,

and ten things they don't, in order to be a Christian. This lively and engaging book will be a

help to seekers as well as a comfort to believers who may find themselves questioning

some of the assumptions they grew up with. With an accessible, storytelling style that's

grounded in solid biblical scholarship, Thielen shows how Christians don't need to believe

that all sinners will be "left behind" to burn in hell or that it's heresy to believe in evolution.

And while we must always take the Bible seriously, we don't always have to take it

literally.”

We will try and meet at member’s houses each Wednesday, and we will announce the loca-

tions as we get them sorted out.

Blessings, Pastor Brian

May 29th – Preface – Chapter 6 June 5th – Chapters 7 – 12

June 12th – Chapters 13 – 17 June 19th – Chapter 18 – Conclusion

(Pastor’s Peace Continued)

It is more difficult, but worth so much more than daydreaming about the past. After all, if

Christ thinks that we are a gift to the world no matter our age or ability, perhaps we should

too.

Peace and Blessings,

Pastor Brian

June 2nd Luau Sunday

On June 2nd we will be having our annual Luau Sunday. The luau or Hawaiian

party is a time for celebration and community. These are both things we value at

Beaver UCC, and so to celebrate the summer and each other we are going to have a bit more

fun than usual on June 2nd. We will invite folks to wear Hawaiian shirts to church, give out

leis, sing a Hawaiian hymn during service, and perhaps have some ukulele music. After-

wards we are going to have a roasted pig delivered to the church and we will have a picnic

downstairs and in the shelter. We are asking people to bring side dishes to go with our

theme and the main dish.

Father’s Day

Fathers, past and present, will be honored on Father’s Day, June 16th. Because there

are often afternoon plans on Father’s Day, there will be no carry-in or fellowship meal after

service.

Pentecost Sunday: Show your Spirit

On Sunday June 9th we will celebrate Pentecost, the event marking the founding

of the Church when the Holy Spirit came upon early Christians in a great fire. The tradi-

tional color for this holiday is red. We are asking that on that Sunday people wear red to

church to celebrate the Holy Spirit.

Strengthen the Church Offering: June 9th

On June 9th we will be taking up our denomination’s “Strengthen the Church” special

offering. It is one of our denomination’s four special yearly offerings. This offering is used

to help churches in our denomination.

The first book of the Bible is Guinessis, in which Adam & Eve were created from an apple

tree.

Noah's wife was called Joan of Ark.

Lot's wife was a pillar of salt by day and a ball of fire by night.

Samson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the Apostles.

Unleavened bread is bread made without ingredients.

Moses went to the top of Mt. Cyanide to get the 10 commandments.

The 7th commandment is 'Thou shalt not admit adultery.'

Joshua let the Hebrew in the battle of Geritol.

David fought the Finkelsteins, a race of people who lived in Biblical times.

Solomon has 300 wives and 700 porcupines.

Jesus was born because Mary had an immaculate contraption.

The people who followed Jesus were called the 13 decibels.

The Epistles were the wives of the Apostles.

One of the opossums was St. Matthew.

Paul preached holy acrimony, which is another name for marriage.

A Godly person should have only one wife. This is called monotony.
