If you want to work as a teacher in a South Australian school, pre-school, or long day care setting you will need to be registered with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia (TRB).

To become registered, you need to meet all of the eligibility criteria, which includes holding the minimum required qualifications, together with a recognised initial teacher education qualification.

Overseas Trained Teachers

If you have completed a teacher education qualification outside of Australia or New Zealand, you must apply to have your qualifications assessed by the TRB. Studying a Teaching Qualification in Australia

If you have not completed a recognised teacher education qualification you can study at a range of Australian higher education institutions. A list of approved Australian teacher education programs is available on our website: www.trb.sa.edu.au/australian-teacher-education-programs

Undergraduate Programs If you have not completed a recognised higher education qualification, you can study a four year accredited Australian undergraduate teacher education program.

Postgraduate Programs If you have completed a recognised undergraduate qualification of at least three years duration in any field, here or overseas, you can study a postgraduate teacher education program.

Before you enrol in postgraduate study, contact the TRB to ensure that your undergraduate qualifications meet our requirements.

Any questions about enrolment or recognition of prior study need to be directed to the relevant higher education institution.

Applying for Registration

Once you are in your final semester of study in an Australian teacher education program, or your overseas qualifications have been assessed as meeting the Board’s registration requirements, you can apply for teacher registration by completing the Application for Teacher Registration form.

Working as a teacher in South Australia

Once you are registered with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia (TRB) you can be employed as a teacher in South Australian schools, pre-schools and prescribed services.

Teachers are not employed by the TRB, so if you have any questions about working as a teacher you should direct them to the relevant employing authority below. Alternatively, you might like to discuss employment requirements with a specific school or site.
