Congratulations to Cerritos; A Leadership Academy!
This year we are celebrating our 20th year, and we raised over $20,000 in our “Be A Beacon” Donation Drive. We are off to a Win-Win start for the school year because the response we had to the Donation Drive was amazing! We are so grateful for your generosity. In addition to parents donating, we had many students offer up coins from their piggy banks and employers graciously matching funds.
Thank you to all the individuals who helped make this fundraiser possible, from securing donations for the grand prize, preparing materials, collecting and processing donations, and tracking class progress. Thank you to the teachers who synergized with their classrooms and offered fun incentives to pump up the enthusiasm.
With our goal reached, the PTO will be able to support the Cerritos teachers and staff, provide additional educational materials and resources for the classrooms, and help fund the community-building events such as our Ice Cream Social, Pumpkin Walk, and Spring Carnival. Your money goes to the purchase of musical instruments, playground equipment, classroom subscriptions, continuing education for teachers, classroom supplies, and so many other big and small efforts to keep Cerritos a very special school.
Moving forward, we will continue to sell Otter Pops on Fridays after school until Fall Break (the only exception being this Friday). We are off to a great start with our Fall Book Fair, which directly supports our library. We appreciate everyone who has volunteered his or her time and talents to make this Book Fair a great success. The students are really looking forward to the Ice Cream Social, too! Keep looking for more Sign-Up Genius requests, as we will need volunteers for the Pumpkin Walk and Turkey Trot this fall. The yearbook team is hard at work already, so don’t forget to snap pictures of all the exciting things that happen at Cerritos. And of course, mark your calendars for the next PTO meeting on September 22nd. We would love to see you there.
All the best,
Jessica Harris PTO Vice President [email protected]

Workroom Days:
Did you know that oftentimes
teachers have to stay late and
come in on the weekends (with no
A/C) to prep their classroom materials?
In order to directly support our teachers with their
curriculum preparation, the PTO sponsors “Workroom
Days” every Tuesday and Thursday. Teachers leave work
requests throughout the week and parent volunteers
assist them by completing the requests on T/TH.
No experience is necessary. We will show you how to use
all the workroom equipment. This is a great grassroots
way for parents to support our teachers. The teachers
appreciate it SO MUCH!
Thank you to Jessica Harris for coordinating Workroom
Days this year! To volunteer, please click here.

Health Office Reminder —
When to Keep Your Child
Home From School
In an effort to keep illness out of the school, the District
has established some guidelines of when you should keep
your child home from school when he/she is sick. Please
keep your child at home if they display any of the following
symptoms:
Fever of 101.0 degrees or higher. A child should be
fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing
medication before returning to school.
Persistent cough
Sore throat with fever
Rash with fever illness, such as chicken pox, measles,
etc.
Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
Red, itchy and draining eyes. If conjunctivitis or “pink
eye” is diagnosed, the child must be on medication for
24 hours before returning to school.
Prolonged headache or stomachache
Earache
Toothache
Symptoms that prevent your child from participating
comfortably in school activities (extreme signs of
tiredness, unexplained irritability or persistent crying)
If your child has mild respiratory or cold symptoms (stuffy
nose with clear drainage, sneezing, mild cough, no fever),
he/she may attend if able to participate in school activities.
Volunteers Caught Doing Good!
A BIG thanks goes out to all the volunteers
who helped with the Hearing and Vision
Screenings including: Amy Huffman,
Angela Parnell, Brandee Zeal, Carissa Espinoza, Christina
Weinmann, Cindy Westlund, Claudia Taylor, Cris Carter,
Crystal Boyd, Diana Colletti, Donna Chapman, Fiona
Dillon, Heidi Giebel, Steve Giebel, John Jurik, Leslie
Swanson, Lisa Ramirez, Maggie Penman, and Roisin
O’Neill.
We also appreciate Jessica Harris for stepping up to
coordinate this effort! Ms. Collett, our Health Assistant,
could not have done it without any of you!
Health Advice from Ms. Collett:
“Parents should have children wash
hands when they arrive home from any
public place including school, and before
eating food to minimize exposure to cold
and flu germs. Hand washing is one of
the best ways to minimize the spreading of illness.”
- Suzanne Collett, Cerritos Health Assistant

2013-2014 Cerritos PTO Executive Board:
News from the Kyrene District
School Boundary Changes
The Kyrene School District has started reviewing school boundary change options that directly
impact Cerritos and the surrounding area. During the Sept. 2nd meeting, the committee
reviewed five options that could shift school enrollments across Ahwatukee.
The committee is very interested in hearing from more Ahwatukee parents, so if you can attend future meetings, your
input is appreciated. As it stands, the first meeting closed with the ask for additional details to be provided at the next
meeting. This is a great opportunity to have your voice heard! For more information, click here.
Front Office Modification Project
The Kyrene District is currently undergoing a project to redesign the Front Office of all of its elementary and middle schools. Seven Kyrene schools were modified this past summer; the remaining 18 (including Cerritos) will be completed during the summer of 2015.
Why the redesign? The goal of this project is to make the offices more secure, but keep them as welcoming to the community as possible.
What will be the most notable changes? Modifications include:
Enhanced security for the school office by creating two lobbies—one for students and one for visitors
Access to the rest of the school through a “buzzable door” controlled by office staff
Plate glass (see-through) will separate the office area from visitors’ lobby (provides sense of security without being too restrictive)
Several of the schools who had the remodel done this past summer have commented in district meetings on how pleased they were with the implementation and end result of the modifications at their school.
For more information about this project, click here.
