INTERNAL ASSESSMENT PART I APPLICATION & ANALYSIS

ANALAYSIS

Step 1- please list all the instruments playing in this symphony and divide them into groups (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussions) (achieved question)

Step 2- provide all the movements in playing order, with the tempo indication and time signature. Is this typical of the Classical symphony setting? Why/why not?

Step 3- compare the scores of Symphony No.5 with Haydn’s ‘Surprise’ symphony, which you have studied earlier. Pay attention to the size of the orchestra, number of different instruments used, structure (form), tempos and dynamics used. What do you think the most important difference is? And why?

Step 4- list the opening keys for each of the movement, and highlight in the score if you hear any significant changes of key (major to minor, or vice versa)

Step 5- choose either the exposition, development or recapitulation, and, using only the CD and the annotated score… Show how Beethoven develops the first and second subject to create a sense of climax. You should provide examples (eg from bar xx-xx or write them out on manuscript paper and attach them with your assignment) to back up your answer.
