Principal’s Report While every week and every day is an opportunity for learning, next week is the official celebration of 2016 Education Week. The newsletter is an obvious way to display the learning at Bega High School and here is the excerpt written for the local newspaper.
'Shared stories, better learning, stronger communities' Bega High School shares much history with the wider community having been established more than sixty years ago. The curriculum over the years has always included subjects that reflect rural … while including others that support students in developing skills for future learning and careers in service industries such as health and aged care, business management and information technologies.
Changes in knowledge about how people prefer to learn, demonstrate skills and their career and further study options are reflected in the school’s ever expanding curriculum and partnerships with other schools, universities, commercial and community organisations.
Again, this year we have been joined by community volunteers in our MULTILIT program for Stage 4 students and many students have been supported in In2Uni and AIME mentoring programs through the University of Wollongong.
This way students across the Valley and the Sapphire Coast Learning Community share many stories, experiences and learning options in building a stronger community. For the ninth year those experiences also include overseas travel for students and community members, yet another example of shared stories, better learning and a stronger community.
This term we welcome back Mark Freedman from his well-deserved tenting trip across Australia, and we will see staff changes due to long service leave and maternity leave – Steve Diprose will be on leave for the remainder of the year, and we wish Lily Nicholson well with the approaching birth a her child. Toby Markham will be teaching History, Geography and English classes, while Steve’s replacement will be Brooke Morgan
We are also looking forward to the marvellous performances and hosting of many Bega students at the Sapphire Coast Learning Community Performing Arts Festival. Tickets are still
available online for the evenings at the Bega Valley Civic Centre. See you there.

South Coast Region Squash representatives During week 10 of last term, six of our students represented the South Coast region at the Combined High Schools (CHS) state championships at Coffs Harbour.
Blake Dowling, year 12, was Captain of the South Coast boys’ team. Also on this team were Joel Tamatea and Jordan Tarlinton, both year 12. This team finished fourth out of ten regions. Alexander Eadie, year 9, played on a conveners’ team which was made up of ‘spare’ players. Nikki Tarlinton, year 12 and Chloe Harlow, year 11, were also on the South Coast team and the girls’ team placed second overall out of seven regions. A great achievement!
An Open Individual Championship was also held with Blake, Joel, Nikki and Alexander making it through to the second round. Although they did not make it any further, Nikki was asked to play off for reserve position for the NSW girls’ team and ended up ranked sixth in the state! A fantastic result! Subsequently one member of the team dropped out due to other commitments and so Nikki will now be travelling to New Zealand to represent NSW in the Trans-Tasman Cup, as well as playing against the Queensland team in the Interstate Challenge.
All players were great ambassadors for the Bega Squash club and the high school.
Regional representatives: Nikki Tarlinton, Blake Dowling, Joel Tamatea, Chloe Harlow, Alexander Eadie and Jordan Tarlinton
Bega High School Girls Knock-Out team The girls played against Tenterfield High School on Monday at Dubbo, (having spent most of Sunday in the car travelling). Millie Boyle was unavailable and luckily Rochelle Tarlinton was able to step into the team at the last minute. The match was over fairly quickly as our girls were mostly too strong for the opposition. The final game score was 3-1. This moves the girls into the semi-finals at Dapto on September 1.
Girls’ team: Chloe Harlow, Rochelle, Nikki and Gabriella Tarlinton
Nikola Tarlinton Represents New South Wales at Trans Tasman Squash Championships Nikola Tarlinton has been selected by the New South Wales Combined High School Sports Association to participate in the Trans Tasman Squash Championships at Palmerston North, New Zealand, in August.
New South Wales Combined High Schools representation is the highest honour a student in New South Wales can attain.
Congratulations Nikola!

The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.
You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 22 August and 21 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey will be sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from the website above.
The Partners in Learning parent feedback survey This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.
Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 22 August and 21 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

2016 Census Night
Dear Parent or Guardian:
School camps on 2016 Census night
The 2016 Census of Population and Housing will be held on Tuesday 9 August 2016.
It is a moment to pause and help shape Australia’s future. The Census takes a ‘snapshot’ of Australia on Census night, collecting vital information to plan and allocate services, facilities and funding, including in the area of education.
To make sure that everyone is counted once and only once in the Census, please ensure that you include your child on the Census form as if they were home on Census night, even though they are on a school camp or an overnight excursion. Your child will not be counted at the camp.
Any adults accompanying students on the camp or excursion, including teachers or parents, will complete a Census form for themselves at the camp or excursion location. A Census Field Officer will arrange for delivery and collection of the Census forms for the adults to complete.
If one adult of the household is away at the camp or excursion, and another adult is at home; do not count the adult that is away as they will complete their own Census form at camp. Do count your child as if they were home.
Thank you in advance for helping us to make the 2016 Census a success.
Yours sincerely, Duncan Young Program Head 2016 Census of Population and Housing
South Coast Music Camp 2016 The Tops Conference Centre, Stanwell Park
Monday 19 September to Thursday 22 September 2016
The NSW Department of Education has an ongoing commitment to providing opportunities for talented students to participate in musical experiences outside of the normal school setting. This year’s Music camp will be a wonderful experience for students studying music both within and external to the school setting.
We will provide large and small ensembles, individual tuition and performance opportunities for students during the camp. Ensembles will be coordinated and staffed by highly skilled and dedicated teachers from within the Department of Education.
Nominations are open to all primary and high school students in years 5 - 10 in NSW. We welcome players from any instrumental family, including voice.
The total cost for the camp is $500. This includes accommodation, all meals, T-shirt and music (including GST). The program consists of a 4 day, 3 night residential camp at The Tops Conference Centre commencing on Monday 19 September to Thursday 22 September 2016. The cost for Year 10 and 11 students who would like to attend as tutors is $300. Students are expected to attend the camp for its full duration.
See Ms Montgomery for nomination forms and details.

ABC Heywire is calling on young people aged 16 – 22 to share a story about life in regional Australia. Winners have their voice heard on the ABC, and receive a trip to the Heywire Regional Youth Summit in Canberra.
Entries close 16 September.
Heywire puts young Australians at the centre of the conversations that shape their communities. The ABC has run the annual regional youth project in partnership with the Australian Government since 1998. Heywire comprises of four clear initiatives:
The annual Heywire cycle begins with a storytelling competition - open to people aged 16-22, living in regional or rural Australia. Heywire encourages young people to tell stories about their life outside the major cities in text, photo, video or audio format. Over the past 17 years more than 9,000 young Australians have taken part. More about the Heywire competition
Competition winners also score an all-expenses-paid trip to the Heywire Summit, designed to ensure their voices are heard in Canberra and around the nation. Over the week participants undertake leadership workshops and meet with members of parliament, government departments and community leaders. The 'Heywirers' work together in teams to develop ideas aimed at improving the lives of young people in regional Australia. The ideas are presented at Parliament House in front of an esteemed panel.
The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) provides grants for community organisations around Australia to adopt one of the Heywire Summit ideas and put it into action. There are currently inspiring initiatives running all over the country that were developed by our Heywire winners, and funded by our grants.
