The following events will be reconsidered in Term 3, however for now now these events must remain on hold; school camps, excursions, parent attendance at assemblies and other school events (e.g. graduation ceremonies or student speech events), parent volunteers – e.g. parent reading helpers (note: canteen and uniform shop volunteers are permitted) and school-based activities that involve large gathering of adults. These large gatherings will continue to be reviewed and assessed based on AHPPC and NSW Health advice and may be permitted at a later date.

I have included Belair school uniform in this newsletter as there have been a few parents requesting clarification regarding the school uniform. I would like to thank parents for taking the time and care to address having their children in correct school uniform. If you require any assistance in this area please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Kind regards, Kathie Colley Principal (rel)

Semester 1 Reports

Due to the interruptions Covid 19 has had on student learning the Department of Education have issued guidelines for the Semester 1 reports. There will be a simplified version of the school report sent home in Week 10 of this term. The report will give feedback on student attainment across all of the key learning areas, however the usual A to E scale will be replaced with a 3-point scale of: Working Towards, Working At or Working Beyond grade expectations. There will be fewer indicators for each learning area than usual. Teachers are currently teaching and assessing students to collate this data to be able to report to you.

Page 4: Belair Public School Newsletter · 2020. 8. 21. · Belair Public School Newsletter Take Just Pride Phone: 4952 1735, 34 Carolyn Street, Adamstown Heights NSW 2289 Email: belair-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Semester 2 reports will return to the normal comprehensive report we have issued in the past.

Those parents that missed the opportunity to have a parent/teacher interview in Term 1 due to Covid restrictions coming in to place will be contacted by class teachers to book a time to offer you a phone interview before the end of term.

Plastic Police

Due to Covid regulations we are still not recycling soft plastics through the Plastic Police program and therefore cannot accept your soft plastics from home until further notice.

Student attendance All students should be at school unless:

• They have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition

• They are currently unwell.

Students who have a medical certificate to stay at home will be supported to learn from home in line with regular procedures if they are able to. These regular procedures are different to what was offered during the learning from home period. If you require work to be provided to your child whilst they are at home due to an underlying health condition, you should contact the school for assistance.

SMS messages to communicate absences via the Skoolbag App have recommenced from this week.

Deputy Principal’s Message One positive that has come out of COVID-19 at Belair is our new practice of having a member of staff greeting students at the gates in the morning and saying goodbye to them in the afternoons. For me personally, it’s so lovely seeing our students walking in the gate with a massive smile on their faces and I love the time it has given me to take a few moments for a chat or a joke as kids arrive at school.

It is however, worrying to see parents dropping off their children in the crossing area, which is a no stopping zone. Please continue to use the ‘Kiss and Drop’ area or the parking areas beyond the crossing to ensure that all of our kids can cross the road safely. I have included some tips from Transport for NSW regarding the use of Kiss and Drop Zones to ensure that we are using the zone to maximise ease and safety of pick up for our families. Please avoid leaving large spaces between cars and remain in your car while using the kiss and drop zone.

GOTCHA Draw Congratulations to this week’s winners! All received a canteen voucher to spend in their break time. This week’s winners were Lila – KZ, George – KZ, Gabriel – KZ, Kiplin – 1/2B, Camilla – 1/2B, Max – 3/4A, Sonny – 4JP, Max – 6P, Taj – 6P and Will – 6P.

ES1 Report

A reminder to parents that Mrs Bale, Mrs Zervos and Mr Mort will be holding parent teacher interviews between Tuesday 16th June and Thursday 2nd July. These interviews will be phone interviews with teachers contacting parents at their nominated times. Parents are asked to go to http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au to book a time. The code is atahc. The interviews will take between 10-15 minutes and discuss student progress this year. If for any reason there are no suitable times available, please contact your child's teacher to organise an alternative time. We look forward to discussing your child's learning in the coming weeks.

Last week Kindergarten continued to enjoy creative and critical thinking lessons. The weekly challenge was to build a raft.

Stage 2 Report

One of the most important things teachers and students have been learning in Stage 2 this year is the importance of feedback. How to embrace it and use it to our advantage. When to give it. How to deliver it carefully and tactfully. Teachers are currently working on providing formal feedback to parents/students in the form of written reports that will be sent home at the end of the semester. This will include future learning goals for both English and mathematics for all students. We know that parents and students will use this feedback to help guide Semester 2 learning journeys.

Feedback for learning is more that just formal reports though. It includes comments on projects and assignments. It includes information shared in emails and telephone conversations. It includes oral feedback shared at the point in time learning took place. It includes encouragement as a teacher walks past in the playground. It includes messages. It includes class discussions. It includes body language. It includes peer assessment and self-assessment. It happens many times every day, in every classroom.

Students receive feedback from one another as well as from teachers. This might be feedback on learning. It might be supporting one another and encouraging one another to risk-take and try new things. It might be through collaborating on a learning task. It might be through peer mentoring. It might through explaining something in a different way. It can be feedback for social and emotional learning as well as academic learning.

Feedback…

When we know better, we do better.

Teachers provide oral feedback to students as they work on learning

tasks in the classroom.

Maintaining good hygiene Stay home if you are unwell. If you are unwell with respiratory illness, you should remain at home until symptoms resolve and, where appropriate, seek advice from a medical practitioner (and call ahead first).

Maintaining good hygiene standards is an important way to reduce the risk of acquiring and spreading respiratory infections. Hand washing is the single most effective way to reduce the spread of germs that cause respiratory disease.

If you are unwell with respiratory illness, you should remain at home until symptoms resolve and, where appropriate, seek advice from a medical practitioner (and call ahead first).

In line with health advice, schools are operating full time, and many additional activities are now able to recommence All schools have returned to full-time on-campus learning. With updated health advice and changes to state and national restrictions, schools are able to recommence the majority of school-based activities from either 15 June 2020 or the start of Term 3 (20 July 2020). Some activities are continuing to be considered.

The following principles underpin these guidelines:

• schools continue to be safe and operationsare in line with Australian Health ProtectionPrincipal Committee (AHPPC) and NSWHealth guidelines

• existing infection control protocols at schools, and new health and safety measures put inplace will help maintain the health and safetyof students and staff

• all activities permitted at school are safeand appropriate in a living with COVID-19environment.

School students do not need to follow strict adult physical distancing guidelines, but should follow good hygiene practices like:

• regularly washing hands• avoiding sharing drinks or food• coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or a

tissue which should be discarded immediately• filling water bottles from bubblers rather than

using the bubbler directly.

School attendance

All students should be at school unless:

• they have a medical certificate which statesthat they are unable to return to school dueto an ongoing medical condition and theexpected timeframe

• they are currently unwell.

School activities/ school site usage

The majority of school-based activities can recommence, as long as the following measures are observed:

• all visitors and external to school providersmust adhere to relevant hygiene, distancingand safety protocols

• principals may continue to restrict, limit orprohibit activities if they are seen as contraryto the current health advice

• external providers and visitors are requiredto demonstrate compliance with health andsafety requirements including adhering tostrict guidelines and completing relevantforms

• non-essential adults are still not permittedon school grounds or at school events – thisincludes parents/carers unless specificallyapproved by the principal.

Physical distancing

Physical distancing of children in schools is not required under the Australian HPPC guidelines. Research has shown limited transmission risk associated with school children in the school environment.
