Our growing portfolio now includes everything from HNDs, foundation degrees and first honours degrees to specialist diplomas for professionals seeking to improve their managerial skills. We also offer Access diplomas as an ideal route into higher education for people who may be returning to learning after a break.

What all these programmes have in common is high-quality, up-to-date content and excellent teaching, underpinned by robust links with employers and enterprising partnerships with universities. We focus on the key skills that employers need in the workplace, paving the way for our students to advance in sustainable, well-paid careers. Latest statistics* show that over 95% of our students progress to high skill jobs or further study within six months of completing their programme.

Our higher education provision won a resounding vote of confidence from the Quality Assurance Agency, who praised the way we prepare students for success in the next phase of their lives. This accolade was followed by an Ofsted inspection of teacher training, where our PGCE and Certificate of Education – run in collaboration with the University of Derby – were rated as ‘outstanding’. In addition, a full Ofsted inspection in 2016 graded the College as ‘good’ overall, with ‘outstanding’ features including our employer engagement.

You will be taught by enthusiastic staff with vast experience in their fields. You will also benefit from the flexibility of our study options, including part-time routes to help you balance learning with family or work commitments. And, of course, the chance to study close to home makes your learning more affordable.

Do take the time to find out more: explore our website, attend an information evening, visit our campuses and talk to our staff and students. You’ll discover how Derby College can take your learning – and your achievements – to a whole new level.

Qualifications explainedIt’s very important to choose a programme that suits your individual needs, abilities and aspirations. Here is a guide to some of the study options available in our higher education portfolio.

DegreesOur portfolio of degree programmes is continuing to expand, with the introduction of the BA (Hons) Security and Offender Management, the BSc (Hons) Animal Management and the BSc (Hons) Equine Studies

This builds on our range of foundation degrees which combine technical and professional skills. These are widely supported by employers who contribute to the development and delivery of the programmes. Once you have completed a foundation degree, you can often progress directly to the final stages of an honours degree at university or to further professional qualifications.

We offer degrees validated by – and in partnership with – the University of Derby, Nottingham Trent University and Sheffield Hallam University. You will be awarded your qualification by the relevant university and benefit from clear progression routes to the next stage of your learning.

Derby College offers Honours Degrees in Animal Management, Equine Studies and Security and Offender Management, plus Foundation Degrees in many subjects such as Computing, Construction, Engineering and Sports Coaching.

HNCs and HNDs Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) tend to be more vocational than degrees and place greater emphasis on practice rather than theory. Highly valued by employers, they also offer an alternative route into higher education.

The HNC usually takes two years of part-time study, although Derby College’s flexible approach means that other study routes are often available. A HNC qualification can sometimes enable you to enter the second year of a degree programme directly.

The HND usually takes two years of full-time study, three years of part-time study or one year of part-time ‘top-up’ study if you have already completed a HNC. A HND qualification can sometimes allow direct entry to the third year of a degree programme.

Derby College offers HNCs and HNDs in subjects such as Business, Construction, Engineering and Games Design.

Higher and Degree ApprenticeshipsHigher and Degree Apprenticeships are a great alternative route to achieving university-level qualifications. You will receive training up to degree level (both on and off the job), a salary and the opportunity to start moving your career forward in the right direction – all without paying hefty tuition fees or accruing student debt.

Higher and Degree Apprenticeships form part of a government strategy to build a well-qualified workforce trained to degree level.

They can lead to further academic qualifications such as an honours degree or to professional qualifications that are specific to an industry – for example, engineers can take steps to achieve chartered status.

The majority of apprentices continue working towards promotion at the company with which they trained. The higher level qualification can also help you progress to another company if that is what you have in mind.

Derby College offers Higher and/or Degree Apprenticeships in areas such as Business, Care, Education and Training, Engineering and Retail.

Professional development programmesContinuing with your professional development is crucial if you want to accelerate your progress up the career ladder. You may need to improve your management and leadership skills, advance your technical know-how, add impressive new qualifications to your CV or turn your talents to a teaching career.

Derby College offers a range of specialist programmes – at levels ranging from 4 to 6 – for professionals progressing their careers in areas such as Business, Hair and Beauty, Health and Social Care, Hospitality, Children’s and Young People’s Services, Retail, Sports Massage Therapy and Teaching.

Access to Higher EducationAccess to Higher Education Diplomas and ‘Pre-Access’ programmes provide you with a stepping stone to a higher level of study. They are ideal if you are considering a career change, want to return to study or feel you need a more gradual introduction to undergraduate education.

They are available to anyone over the age of 19, irrespective of previous qualifications. All Access programmes feature Maths, English, IT and Study Skills to ensure you have a good standard of general education to progress to the next stage of your learning.

Derby College offers Access programmes in Art and Design, Creative Digital Media, Fashion Business, Health Professions, Science, Social Science and Teaching.

Former Access student Christopher Cooke has now progressed to a degree in Adult Nursing, grateful for the “engaging content and high standard of teaching” on his Derby College diploma.

Christopher, who didn’t pursue higher education when he first left school, regarded the Access diploma as a way to make up for missed opportunities. He looked at several colleges in the region before deciding on Derby – and he says he feels confident he made the right choice.

He found the College to be an easy train commute from his home in Nottingham and he also qualified for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the cost of his studies.

Christopher is now undertaking general nursing training on a full-time degree in Nottingham but, once qualified, he would quite like to specialise in HIV and sexual health. He has previously volunteered with the Terrence Higgins Trust and it is an area of healthcare which particularly interests him.

An Access programme at Derby College opened doors to an exciting future for Steven Rimmer – and now he’s returned to help other students following in his footsteps.

Having worked as an electrical engineer, sports fan Steven chose an Access diploma to help him pursue a new career centred on sport, exercise and health.

He selected a health professions programme because it included the modules he needed to secure a place on a Sports and Exercise Science degree at university.

“I knew while I was on the Access programme that I’d be coming back as a teacher within three or four years,” he says.

His prediction came true. Having graduated with honours from the University of Derby, he progressed to the PGCE and secured a role lecturing in health science subjects on the College’s Access and Pre-Access programmes and on Health and Social Care programmes.

For Steven, going to university was also a chance to broaden his horizons. He set up his own company, Elite Sports Science, working with professional athletes in combat sports, football, rugby and World Super Bikes.

He also raised his profile as an academic researcher, winning awards for his dissertation work and presenting his findings at a national conference. His research into boxers’ nutrition was even selected for publication in a leading sports science journal.

Steven RimmerMore than a sporting chance in an academic career

Going to Derby College has shown me that I am academic and suited to a teaching career. I want to emulate those lecturers who taught me on my Access programme – and help other people like me get the chance to go to university.

Former beauty salon worker Cinzia Corleto is on the fast track to her dream job as a teacher, thanks to an Access programme at Derby College.

Cinzia embarked on the Access to Teaching Diploma after deciding she didn’t want to remain in the beauty industry forever – and followed her instincts to switch career and become a primary school teacher.

She went on to be accepted by the University of Nottingham to take a degree in Educational Studies with Early Years. She will then complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) to enable her to teach in primary schools.

Cinzia really appreciates how the one-year Access programme speeded up the process of launching her new career, as an alternative to the traditional route through A-levels. She also praises the level of support she received from the tutors.

Cinzia CorletoAccess Diploma accelerates career change plans

I loved it. They told to me to expect the most intense year of my life – and it really is intense but it’s really good. The programme stretched me but the tutors gave me much greater confidence. I felt like I was on the right track and making real progress.

Thinking about an Access programme? If you would like extra time to build your study skills, why not consider one of our pre-Access programmes?

These one-year Level 2 programmes, offered at both our Joseph Wright and Ilkeston campuses, prepare you to embark on an Access programme and give you the chance to test out a range of subject areas. There are no formal entry requirements.

You’ll develop your study skills and benefit from guidance on career planning. You could also take GCSE English and Maths at the same time.

Are you considering a career in school teaching or another educational role working with young people or children? Would you like a stepping stone to university study? If so, our Access to Teaching programme may be ideal for you.

Why choose this programme? This wide-ranging programme will prepare you for university study and provide a pathway for you to apply for a place on primary or secondary teaching degrees. You will develop your study skills and deepen your knowledge across a broad spectrum of subjects, including Education, Psychology, Science and English Literature and Language.

You can take the diploma at either our Joseph Wright Campus or Ilkeston Campus. It is delivered on different days and at different times – to be discussed in detail at your interview. Please note that the availability of the programme at your preferred location is dependent on student numbers.

Animal Management student Lauren Cooper has not looked back since attending an open day at our Broomfield Hall Campus. Having gained her Level 3 Animal Care qualification, she progressed to higher education and has now set her sights on a career working in a zoo or in canine rehabilitation.

Although she had always loved animals, Lauren hadn’t realised such learning opportunities were available to her when she first left school with GCSEs. She undertook various factory and office jobs but her prospects really changed after she went along to the College event.

As a then 24-year-old with a young child, Lauren discovered that she qualified for free tuition on the Level 3 programme, bursary help with her travel expenses and a free on-site nursery place for her son, Zander. As she says: ‘Enrolling at Broomfield was a no brainer!”

Having progressed to higher education studies, Lauren particularly relished the hands-on elements of her programme – especially handling more unusual species such as porcupines and skunks. She also appreciated the support of her tutors whom she describes as always approachable and responsive.

Lauren Cooper ‘One of the best decisions I ever made’

Taking the decision to study at Broomfield Hall was one of the best I ever made. I hope my experience will be an inspiration to other people who have a passion for learning how to look after animals.

Gaining a university degree simply wasn’t an option when Caroline Keeton left school with just a handful of CSEs. Now, more than 30 years on, the mum-of-two has just completed the Foundation Degree in Children’s and Young People’s Services and is set to ‘top up’ her qualification to a full honours degree.

Caroline renewed her interest in learning when she started helping out at her daughters’ school, where she now works as a Teaching Assistant. Over the years she added GCSEs, book-keeping and childcare qualifications to her CV and eventually completed the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector programme at the College.

This paved the way for her to join the Foundation Degree and she praises her tutors for their support in encouraging her – and other students – to take the next step and gain a full honours degree at the University of Derby.

A Higher Apprenticeship programme with Rolls-Royce has provided the best of both worlds for Sam Bowler – the chance to achieve a highly regarded qualification while working with one of the world’s best-known companies.

As part of his apprenticeship programme, Sam completed the Foundation Degree in Integrated Engineering at Derby College – a flagship programme designed to help ambitious professionals achieve a higher level qualification organised around their work.

Sam has been interested in engineering from an early age. After studying A-levels, he decided he wanted to gain a practical qualification while embarking on his career straight away. Although he always aspired to study for a degree, he did not want to go away to university.

Securing the Higher Apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce proved the ideal route for him to achieve these ambitions. He began his studies with Derby College in September 2012, choosing the electrical pathway on the Foundation Degree. He was able to put the theory he learned at College into practice while working on the test and measurement of large aero engines at Rolls-Royce.

Sam BowlerEngineering career success with Rolls-Royce

Staff at Derby College were really helpful. They guided and supported me all the way. Supportive feedback was offered all the time and the resources were really good. The small group sizes in the second year allowed for really focused sessions and – whenever I had a problem – lecturers were very good at getting back to me.

Studying for her PGCE at Derby College was the springboard PE teacher Kerry Armstrong needed to secure her first job in teaching.

Kerry – who was assessed as ‘outstanding’ across the professional standards based on observations by her mentor and tutor – has now taken up her new full-time role at the City of Derby Academy.

With a degree in Sports Development and Coaching from Sheffield Hallam University, Kerry was previously working as a curriculum support assistant at Springwell Community College in Chesterfield. This part-time role served as the starting point she required to access the two-year PGCE programme at our Roundhouse Campus.

Kerry ArmstrongSetting the pace in a teaching career

The facilities at the Roundhouse are really good and so was the standard of teaching. As I’d expected, the PGCE was quite difficult as it is a bit like doing a masters. Everything was well explained by our lecturers, though, and you knew where to go for help if there was anything that you weren’t sure about.

Money matters

A more affordable optionHigher education at Derby College is considerably less expensive than most other options. Fees are relatively modest – usually £6,000 to £7,500 for a full-time programme and £3,000 to £4,500 for a part-time programme – which compares favourably with university fees. Studying locally also means you won’t face the same accommodation and transport costs.

Tuition feesYou can pay for your higher education programme through:• A direct payment to the College• Sponsorship from an employer• A student loan

Student loansThe Student Loans Company administers financial support for higher education. If you apply for a loan:• You don’t have to pay fees up front• You don’t need to pay back anything until after you have completed your programme and are earning over £25,000 per year• You won’t pay anything back at all if you never reach that salary level.

Depending on your household income, you may also be eligible for a maintenance loan to cover your living costs.

Applying for a loanIf you choose to apply for a loan, you will need to complete an online form each year you study. Your tuition fee will automatically be paid to Derby College.

It makes sense to apply for student finance as early as possible. You can do so as soon as finance applications are open and you have accepted an offer – you don’t have to wait until you have achieved all your entry grades.

We especially target our support at students who are the first in their family to undertake higher education, students from BME backgrounds, students who live in areas where people do not often progress to higher education, and students who were receiving free school meals. We also consider other factors such as where you live.

Choosing to study a higher education programme is a real investment in your future, leading to better career prospects and greater earning potential. We’ll provide all the advice and support you need to overcome any financial concerns you may have.

Disabled Students’ AllowanceAs a higher education student in England, you can apply for the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) if you have a disability (as defined under the Equality Act 2010), long-term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia. The support depends on your individual needs and not on your income.

The Disabled Students’ Allowance pays for extra support to help you make the most of your studies. This could be payment for study skills support, such as dedicated support for dyslexia, or for specialist equipment such as electronic note-taking software.

The application process for the DSA can take up to 14 weeks.

Advanced Learner LoanYou could also qualify for a new type of loan if you are on other programmes at Level 3 or above, including our Access to Higher Education diplomas.

The introduction of the Advanced Learner Loan means that even more Derby College students aged 19 and older now have access to a financial support package which is similar to that available to university undergraduates.

Rather than having to pay for your fees up front, you can access a loan from the Student Loans Company which you only need to repay once you have completed your studies and when you are earning over £25,000 a year.

The loans are easy to apply for. Your household income and employment status are not taken into account and there are no credit checks.

Being eligible for the Adult Learner Loan was massively important for me. Without it, I don’t think I would have

been able to enrol on my College programme and pursue my nursing training.

• Publictransport – our campuses are served by scheduled buses and the College offers its own free service on certain routes. If you live near a station, it may be just as easy to take the train to our city campuses. Check out the travel deals and discounts to help you save money too – Student Services can advise you.

• Cycling– if you live within five miles of your campus, you can cycle there in about 30 minutes. We offer designated cycle parking areas at some campuses.

But you will find all campuses in the city and Ilkeston are close to public car parks and there is some free parking at Broomfield Hall.
