SYNOPSIS

Adapted from A. Vincent Ularich's short play of the same name, Future Boyfriend follows the exploits of Stuart and Kaylie, a couple enjoying their third date until Stuart reveals a secret that threatens to derail their budding romance. Is he telling the truth, or is it Science Fiction?

DIRECTORS STATEMENT

I’ve always loved the films of Don Coscarelli, and especially the worlds he builds. From the horrific world of “Phantasm,” the dark satire of “Bubba Ho Tep,” to the surreal humor of “John Dies at the End,” one thing is clear in all his films: There is a world beyond this one that’s every bit as real as our own, which is both dangerous and kind of ridiculous.

“Future Boyfriend” is as far from the grotesquerie of Coscarelli, but when I first worked as the projection designer for Meagen Fay’s production of “Future Boyfriend’s” original incarnation as a one-act play as part of Sci-Fest LA (an annual science fiction one-act play festival), I saw that same dichotomy - a very real other reality that could pose a tangible danger to our own.

But really, no matter what time we’re from we have the same problems. Dates are awkward. Technology is confusing. Love takes work. The stakes in “Future Boyfriend” aren’t about the fate of the world, but finding love can feel that way. Like if Schwarzenegger’s Terminator arrived from the future not to murder Sarah Connor, but to bring her a bouquet of flowers.

ABOUT

Future Boyfriend was originally produced at the 1st Annual Science Fiction Play Festival in Los Angeles. After launching a successful Kick Starter Campaign, producers Emily Bell and Ron Morehouse assembled a team lead by director Ben Rock (Blair Witch Project, Alien Raiders, 20 Seconds to Live) and featuring a crew which included International Cinematographers Guild 2014 Emerging Cinematographers Award winner George Feucht (Dance of the Dead, V/H/S), award winning composer Kays Alatrakchi (Cutting Room, Alien Raiders), and Visual Effects Supervisor Tom Moser (Marvel, Lions Gate).
