Linking Verbs

Helping Verbs (can be action or linking—depends on the

Action verbs describe what the subject of the sentence is doing. It also expresses possession (have, own)

The team PLAYED football.Jessica DANCED on stage.The hungry children ATE candy.She HAS green eyes.

The verbs with an * can be action or linking, depending on their meaning in the sentence.

For example:For example:Linking: The flower smelled beautiful. (Can a

flower SMELL?)Action: She smelled the flowers. (She is smelling.)

Wednesday- VERB ASSIGNMENT

1) Circle 3 linking verbs in your short story.

2) Change the linking verbs to action verbs. This might mean changing the sentence in your story.

Wednesday-“Show Not Tell”Good writers SHOW what is happening in a story; they just don’t tell you. They use VERBS to create imagery so that you “see” what is happening as you read.Example:Example:Telling statement: The girls were excited.Imagery/showing: Giggles and screams filled the arena. Their soft curls were now damp with perspiration after their last dance. They held tight to each other in a mock effort to contain themselves as the judge came on stage. The moment was here.

Telling: The pizza was delicious.Showing: Steam rising up off the melted cheese made my mouth water. The first bite, my teeth sinking into the cheese through the tomato sauce and into the moist crust, made me chew and swallow rapidly. Even the cheese and tomato sauce, sticking to my fingertips, begged to be licked.

WEDNESDAY- SHOW NOT TELL ASSIGNMENT

1) Find one place that “tells” in your short story.

2) Change the telling event to a showing event. Use descriptive, sensory language and STRONG ACTION VERBS to give the reader and IMAGE of what happened!
