Ben Venue Public School…

where great things are always happening!

Welcome to Week 5 Term 2 Monday 22, May 2017

This week most students will be participating in the BVPS rewards afternoon. This is a new initiative that acknowledges

students who continually follow the DoE Behaviour Code for students and exhibit the five YCDI keys of confidence,

persistence, resilience, organisation and getting along. Each Stage has organised a special afternoon of fun and laughter.

Students who have been on a level in the past five weeks are unable to attend.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Multicultural Public

Speaking competition last week. Sophie Ridley, Jordan Pattinson, Skye Vaughan

and Jack Coddington will move on to the next level at a date and venue to be

determined.

Cam and I had a very productive few days at the Hawker Brownlow Education conference last week.

We are feeling very excited about continuing our journey towards school excellence and are keen to

work with staff and students on embedding formative assessment practices across the school. The

executive will continue with their professional learning on leading evidenced based pedagogy

tomorrow.

Sporting News

Thank you to Rebecca O’Hara, Richard Cotter and James Waters for their involvement in the District Cross

Country last Wednesday. Congratulations to Chloe Petrov and Sophie Parsons who were selected in the NW

PSSA soccer team along with Rari Widders-Lockwood and Dallas Kelly who were selected for the PSSA touch football

trials. This is a fabulous achievement and I look forward to hearing of the team’s efforts in the future.

Red Day for Hannah

Congratulations to 5T for their organisation of Red Day for Hannah today and thank you to the school community for all

their support. I do not yet have a total figure for the amount raised as yet but will include this in next week’s newsletter.

Hannah is still receiving treatment in Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Ben Venue Choirs Eisteddfod News

On Tuesday 16 May Mrs Porter and Mrs Clayton accompanied 50 students from Year 1 and 2 to Lazenby Hall to participate in the Armidale Eisteddfod. The Stage 1 Choir entered the non-competitive section, as this was the first time the group had performed in such an event. Every single student sang beautifully and represented Ben Venue with pride. The group received many compliments from community members highlighting the very high standard of uniform and the exemplary behaviour exhibited by every member of the choir. Mrs Porter and Mrs Clayton are extremely proud of our fabulous Stage 1 Choir and wish to congratulate our students on a successful performance. On Wednesday 17 May the Ben Venue Senior Choir competed in the Armidale Eisteddfod Two-Part Contrasting Songs section. Students sang wonderfully well and managed to gain second place after the beautiful Cantilena group from NECOM. Both piano accompanist Mrs Tina Townsend and I were incredibly proud of our students who all sang and presented themselves with confidence, maturity and enthusiasm! This was truly no easy feat considering Stage 3 have had so much on their plate recently with NAPLAN, Year 6 Camp, District Cross Country and so many other fabulous endeavours. It was indeed a privilege to represent Ben Venue with such a fine group of talented and committed students. Congratulations Senior Choir.

AROUND THE CLASSROOM

4S - Year 4S have had a very busy start to term but they

have all settled in very well. We have many exciting things

happening this term such as ‘The H Team’ play which will

be coming on May 26, our assembly item will be shown

on June 2 and our Thalagarrah

excursion on June 23. Students have

been busily practising their item at

home and I’m sure by the time we

present it in Week 6 you’ll even know

it off by heart.

In class students have been busy doing assessments. It’s

been great seeing the students’ understanding of

concepts develop.

As part of our History unit ‘People and our Beliefs’

students have been learning about the diverse nation we

live in and the special celebrations and commemorations

we celebrate locally, nationally and around the world.

Thank you to the parents who have supplied their child

with the necessary stationery for the term. It is being well

used.

2B - The students in 2B are doing a great job

of focusing on their learning in Term 2. In mathematics everyone is working hard on learning new strategies for addition and subtraction and ensuring they can explain the steps that they take to solve problems. We are also working on collecting data using tally marks and recording the information in graphs.

Descriptive texts are a focus in English. We have read some fabulous books about monsters and are focusing on techniques that can be used to describe a character when writing. We are also working on improving our use of grammar and punctuation to construct sentences and paragraphs.

Starting today, we are participating in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge which is aimed at promoting good health through exercise. We will be playing sport games as a class group and students are also encouraged to play active games in the playground. We will be keeping a record of how much exercise we each do over a number of weeks and hope that we have a lot of fun while we get healthier.

Many of the 2B students were proud participants in the Eisteddfod as part of the Junior Choir. They are to be congratulated on their commitment to working hard during rehearsals and for their fantastic performance on the day!
