Building upon a legacy of community engagement and social activism, the library serves the Eastside of San Antonio as a symbol of societal growth and educational achievement. The library houses 40,000 volumes including a collection of culturally meaningful rare books and art. With early design input from the community, it serves as a vibrant hub in a place dense with history and civic momentum. The building is designed to restore the urbanfabric along the Commerce Street corridor, to be a steward of environmental and cultural resources, and reconnect the neighborhood to the north and south. The Library’s form and arrangement of space look to local landmarks as a basis for inspiration. The two fl oors of the library open to and face a grand mural on the neighboring building as a formal nod to the power of local art as a medium for expressing the community’s voice.
