In Other StoriesHow a boda boda operator changed his business fortune onefacility at a time

Albert Owino started his ‘boda boda’ business three years ago.His motor bike was practically his lifeline. Between 6am and 7.30am, he would be ferrying school pupils from their homes and drop them at their schools.

“I would then serve those heading to work and businesses once I’m through with school children,” said Owino.

Just like any other entrepreneur in the small and medium enter-prise sector, he often faced unique issues such as lack of credit, limitations on business management skills, among others issues, which affected the growth and profitability of his business.

But his diligence caught the eyes of National Bank Micro Banker Beryl A. Okado who chose him as her preferred ‘Chauffeur’ to client visits and market activations.

“We developed a rapport and after learning that I work with National Bank, he started enquiring about what credit facilities the bank could offer him,” she said.

And he acted fast! Albert applied for his first loan of Ksh40, 000 with National Bank, which was granted. He used the facility to purchase an additional secondhand motorbike which he leased out. With increased income, he set up a salon and second-hand clothing business for his wife.

He then applied for a second facility of Ksh100, 000, which he used to purchase another motorbike for lease and for expansions of boost the second-hand clothing business.

“Today it is quite different - he has quite made the grade because of his,” said Owino.

“Finding a bank with specialized lending programs and experienced lenders allowed me to grow my business. National Bank listened to my needs and found the right solution to finance my boda boda and boutique businesses. I live in my own house and businesses are stable and growing, thanks to National Bank’s lending expertise and great service,” Owino said.

Albert is currently servicing a Ksh650, 000 facility with a clean credit record. He has also been prequalified for National Bank classic credit card with a Ksh50, 000 credit limit.

“There’s no telling how far this journey will take him, but one thing is, his life is changing for better one facility at a time, for sure,” concluded Beryl.

The Money Sonnet

Money comes and money goes;Where it goes, does anyone know?Today I’ll spend it all on a rose;Oh money, it’s so easy just to blow.Money is here, and then it’s there, How did it get from me, so very faraway?Oh! But I wanted something nice to wear;Oh! But I had to see the beautiful ballet.Money slips from my fingers with speed;Money flies from my wallet with grace; There’s just so many things I need; And after all mustn’t one keep pace. But now I’m broke and left out with the fleas; And here I thought I could do just as I please.
