BENTWATER CIVICASSOCIATION – (BCA)

The Bentwater Civic Association is proudly honoring all Bentwa-ter residents who have served in a branch of our military or as a police officer or first responder. The BCA recently purchased the new flag, flagpole and lighting that now reside next to the Bent-water sign as you come across the lake. The flag was dedicated on September 11, 2012. The BCA worked with the Property Owners Association for several months to get this done, and we want to thank Dawn Cleboski for all of her hard work to make this a success. We would also like to thank builder Jim Morris for donating his services to get the flag pole and light installed.

The Disposal of Household Chemicals and Paint Event was held on Saturday, October 6 at the North Shore church parking lot just outside the Bentwater West gate. This event, sponsored jointly by the BCA and the POA, gave Bentwater residents the opportunity to easily dispose of old and dangerous pool chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, paints, stains and varnishes, turpentine and other solvents. They also collected compact fluorescent light bulbs. The disposal was handled by the Montgomery County Precinct #3 Recycling.

In November the BCA will hold its annual meeting on Novem-ber 15 in the Harborview Room at the Yacht Club. At this

meeting, new board members will be elected and there will be a short meeting where President Terry Gent will go over the accomplishments of the year and the plans for 2013. Please plan to attend this important event. All Bentwater residents are welcome to attend this meeting, but only BCA members can vote. You will also be able to join the BCA for 2013 at this meeting. If you want your voice heard, don’t stand on the sidelines-get involved!

Flag dedicated on September 11, 2012 was donated by the BCA.

BLOBentwater Ladies OrganizationSeptember brought a change for the Bentwater Ladies Organization as they moved their meeting day to the second Thursday in the month. Things went off without a hitch, and a full Yacht Club dining room was entertained by the Texas Guitar Quartet. In October the enter-tainment was Tianna Hall, a well-known Houston jazz singer and recording artist.

October events kept everyone busy. First up was the Picnic in the Park, held at the Park in the Meadow on October 7. This annual event is sponsored jointly by the Bentwater Ladies Organization, Property Owners Association, Bentwater Civic Association, Men of Bentwater and the Bentwater Yacht and Country Club. All Bentwater residents were treated to a catered BBQ lunch along with games and activities for the entire family.

At the end of the month, 85 BLO mem-bers boarded two buses and headed east to Louisiana for the Coushatta Casino and golf trip. This annual event, spon-

sored by BLO, was chaired this year by Debby Capps and Linda Gent. Many of the ladies played in the golf tournament on Wednesday afternoon while the rest tried their hands at the gaming tables or one armed bandits. Everyone enjoyed the snacks and bingo on the bus and sev-eral lucky ladies had extra money to feed the machines!

Looking forward to November, there are several more activities to keep the ladies busy. Bric-A-Brac Bazaar has returned to the Country Club this year. It will be on Saturday, November 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be lots of new vendors, so get there early to get the best merchandise.

The bus trip to the Houston Ballet Nut-cracker Market will be leaving promptly at 8:00 am on Friday, November 9. This is a fabulous day of shopping, and the bus will be waiting by the door of Reliant Center to store all of your packages while you shop. Breakfast snacks and beverages

will be served on the bus and on the return trip you can celebrate your pur-chases with a glass of wine.

The holidays are always a busy time for BLO members. The Annual Holiday Dinner Dance is scheduled for November 30 and December 1. Each night will have the same menu and entertainment. It’s not too early to start putting your group together for a table and looking for that perfect dress. The next week BLO will host the Annual Holiday Home Tour on Wednesday, December 5, and Thursday, December 6. Tickets which allow you to view the beautifully decorated homes will be on sale at the November BLO meeting or at the Country Club office. They are $15 in advance or $20 on the days of the tours.

As we race towards the end of the year, the Bentwater Ladies Organization wishes all of our friends and neighbors a spectacular holi-good time this year.

Location change to the Country Club

Bric-A-Bracm a r k e t

A blue moon is the appearance of the third full moon in a season that has four full moons, instead of the usual three. It is never visually blue. Because a blue moon occurs only every two or three years, the term blue moon is used colloquially to mean a rare event, as in the phrase "once in a blue moon."

Folklore defines a blue moon as the second full moon in a given month.

The last full moon fell on August 31, 2012.

The next blue moon occurs on July 31, 2015. We get two blue moons in 2018 when they fall within January and March.

A blue moon AND Bentwater? THIS IS THE LIFE!

BLUE MOON, YOU SAW ME STANDING ALONE, WITHOUT A DREAM IN MY HEART, WITHOUT A LOVE OF MY OWN, BLUE MOON...

The Bentwater Ladies Organization, Inc. presents its annual market on Saturday, November 3, 2012. It will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Country Club. There is no need to drive outside our community when you can do all of your holiday shopping right here and in one day. There will be a vari-ety of vendors offering creative and unique gift ideas, as well as one-of-a- kind accessories for your home. Some of the vendors were here last year; others are new to Bric-A-Brac and are sure to offer something special. Make sure to bring a friend to enjoy the shopping experience and lunch at the club.

The Texas Forest Service estimates up to 500 million trees were killed in Texas by the drought of 2011. While 300 million of these dead trees were found in rural areas, the remainder, nearly 200 million, were found in cities and residential communi-ties across the state. Thousands of trees here in Bentwater are among those that have fallen and remain in danger due to the extreme heat and lack of rainfall.

The POA is identifying these trees, so we can notify property owners. The process of locating these trees and documenting them is a tedious and time consuming task. Once we notify property owners, they are responsible for having the trees removed. We ask that homeowners be patient throughout this process and lend a hand if possible. Please contact us at 936-597-5532 to see how you can assist. We appreciate any help, as it is our goal to keep Bentwater beautiful.

BCA members Jerry Lowrey and Roland Voigt approached BCA President Terry Gent with the idea of their organiza-tion donating a flag and flag pole to the people of Bentwater in honor of Bent-water residents who served in the United States Armed Forces and/or as First Responders. He eagerly responded and

put the plan in motion with Lowrey’s and Voigt’s able assistance. Gathering together, the group needed to select the site, secure the land, arrange for materi-als and installation, organize a ceremony and finalize the myriad of other details required; the date was fittingly set for September 11, 2012, Patriot’s Day.

Join us on behalf of all Bentwater property owners, present and future, and all whose eyes turn towards the BEACON OF FREEDOM, in thanking the members of BENTWATER CIVIC ASSOCIATION for their generosity in giving us a symbol of the sacrifices that so many have made for us that we may walk in freedom.

The Garden Club met recently at the home of Delores Wil-liams. After purchasing the lot behind her property, she devel-oped a very large suburban garden. A variety of spectacular spots are available for relaxing. There is a swimming pool, hot tub, fireplace, fire pit, three large patios, a screened porch and three outside eating areas. All of the mentioned amenities plus many plants and flower beds are placed to capture the eye and soothe the soul. The group enjoyed meandering about the backyard.

The theme of the meeting, garden inspired tables, allowed the members to see creative ways to decorate tables using plants from the garden. Four very different table settings were presented to the members. The splendid tables were arranged by Sharon Cor-zine, Delores Williams, Sally Bierman and Miriam Hemmeline.

After wandering about Delores' garden and admiring the table settings, the group enjoyed a garden party featuring dishes using vegetables, herbs, fruits and nuts grown in anyone's garden. Mar-iam Hemmeline also presented information to the group about the West Nile mosquito.

The next meeting of the Garden club will be at the Calendar Garden Nursery in Magnolia with lunch at a near-by popular restaurant. The topic for discussion will be fall gardening and plants. The Garden Club meets on the first Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m.

For more information, contact Phillis Podlipny at 936-597-5797.

Lee Rushing, Senior Pastor of North Shore Church (located just outside the Bentwater West Gate), offered a prayer of thanksgiving and dedication for our new flag located next to the Bentwater sign on Lake Conroe. He shared information about the symbolism of each of the twelve folds of a U.S. flag. The flag-folding ceremony represents the same religious principles on which our great country was originally founded. According to the American Legion, chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veteran’s organization, each fold has its own purpose and represents the following:

s Fold one – Life on Earths Fold two – Belief in eternal lifes Fold three – Honor and remembrance of the veteran depart-

ing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.

s Fold four – Humanity’s weaker nature; as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for His divine guidance.

Dear Property Owner:

As we quickly approach the holiday sea-son we often think about the things we have to be thankful for: food, clothing and a roof over our heads. We count the blessings in our lives and are reminded of those who are less fortunate. There is no better time to get involved and give back. Here in Bentwater there are numerous organizations that donate their time and resources helping those in need. It is wonderful knowing so many of our residents give their time and tal-ents helping others. If you have not yet

A recent meeting of the Lake Conroe Association and San Jacinto River Authority/Texas Parks & Wildlife Stakeholders revealed the state of vegetation in Lake Conroe. Lake Conroe currently has about 1,135 acres of native vegetation and only about 0.1 acre of Hydrilla in water too shallow for grass carp to feed. Things seem to be going well. The Board of Directors dis-cussed the possibility of stocking more grass carp in the future to prevent the kind of Hydrilla expansion we saw in the early

2000’s. They will closely monitor what the vegetation is doing and which species seem to be expanding over the next year to help determine when and how many additional grass carp may need to be stocked.

The Bentwater POA is represented on the Board of Directors of the Lake Conroe Association and on the San Jacinto River Authority/Texas Parks & Wildlife Stakeholders board.

home tourHolidayAre you looking for a fun outing this holiday sea-son? Do you like support-ing charities? Why not combine the two and take part in the 2012 Bentwater

Holiday Home Tour. The Holiday Home Tour gives you the unique opportunity to see how others dec-orate their homes to inspire you to decorate yours.

This year’s committee of Pat Wagner, Laurie Burtch, Deb Aus-tin, Connie Stout and Kimi Poole is working hard to make this the best tour ever.

The tour is December 5 and 6 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The tickets can be purchased at the Country Club front desk start-ing November 1st. They will also be sold at the November BLO luncheon. Each ticket allows a one time visit to each home and can be used either night. The price of the ticket is $15 if pur-chased in advance and $20 the day of the tour.

Each homeowner designates a charity they support. The pro-ceeds from the ticket sales are divided equally between the charities. In addition, the Montgomery High School art stu-dents provide a pencil sketch of the home to the homeowners.

If you would like to volunteer to help guide people through one of the houses, please contact Pat Wagner at (936) 597-3339.

The Bentwater POA provided an informative slide show presentation for the newcomer’s event. POA General Manager Dawn Cleboski gave new BLO members a brief over-view of all the organizations found here in Bentwater. Then the ladies enjoyed great food and new friendships.

Meet Linda and Rob McKee. They are not exactly newcomers as they have owned their Bentwater house for some time. They just moved in on a full-time, permanent basis and are very happy to be here. She stated that although they are just moving from the Houston 1960/290 area, it has created almost as many boxes as if they have moved from across the country. Rob has been promised a golf game as soon as the boxes are unpacked. Welcome, we’re glad you are here!

Hello everyone. Meet Eddie Davis. He was so busy rushing in and out, getting the multitude of errands finished that moving creates, that we didn’t have an opportunity to share neighborly information. We look forward to seeing him again. Welcome.

TMJ stands for “temporomandibular joint,” or jaw joint. These are the small joints in front of each ear that

The area of the face where the TMJ is located is an intricate network of bones, including the teeth, muscles, and nerves. It was a day of great food, fun and getting to know your neighbors. Picnic in the Park was a huge success as residents gathered at the Park in the Meadows to enjoy a barbecue dinner with all the fixins’ and games for all ages. While the kids enjoyed the moonwalk and face painting, the adults tossed some horseshoes and played “backyard golf.” Some lucky residents even walked away with door prizes!

Every year Picnic in the Park is sponsored by the Bentwater Ladies Organization, Men of Bentwater, Property Owners Association, Bentwater Civic Association and Bentwater Yacht and Country Club. This year it was the POA’s turn to take the lead and host the festivities. Everyone had a great time and is looking forward to next year!

Sales CenterNew Bentwater Program Rewards Property Owners for ExxonMobil Referrals

Just as Houston is the undisputed center of the oil industry, Bentwater

is a preferred residence for Houston’s oil and gas community. With more than 12 miles of shoreline, the adjoining national forest and three championship golf courses, Bentwater offers a break from the hustle and bustle that has been embraced by many ExxonMobil employees over the years. Even those property owners not directly employed by ExxonMobil are highly likely to have a friend, family member or business associate connected in some way to the energy giant. Fur-thermore, if that statement doesn’t cur-rently apply to you, there’s a high prob-ability it soon will.

The world’s largest publicly traded oil and gas company is currently constructing its

new headquarters just 30 minutes south of Bentwater. With construction well underway, more than 10,000 ExxonMobil employees are slated for relocation to our area. The impact to our local economy will be both positive and, in some cases, over-whelming. For the immediate areas sur-rounding the new campus, the impact will result in a shortage of available housing and a dramatic increase in road and facili-ties congestion. This is where you come in.

Bentwater is uniquely positioned to meet the housing need and the greater need for rest and relaxation at home. With a generous selection of new developer homesites and a highly desirable life-style, Bentwater will be a natural choice for those looking for a new place to call home. Bentwater Yacht and Country

Club recently announced a new program that will generously reward property owners for referring their ExxonMobil friends, family and business associates who become new members of the Club by purchasing a developer-owned home-site. The choice is yours: a $3,000 credit to your club account or a one-time com-plimentary upgrade to the membership of your choice, including Grand Pines.

Here are some pictures of the Lake Conroe River Otters that often visit resident Gary Sewell’s dock. It appears they also can’t resist the relaxing view of the lake. This is the life!

River Otters

Ten year-old Jack Fralick has been a member of Montgomery's Cub Scout Pack 907 since 2008, when the Fralick family moved to Bentwater from Wis-consin in order to escape the cold win-ters. Jack began as a Tiger Scout when he was in first grade at Montgomery Elementary School. Two years later his younger brother, 8-year-old Sam, fol-lowed in his footsteps; they've both been Cub Scouts ever since. You might remember seeing them riding in the Fourth of July Parade this year in the neighborhood, or perhaps they rang your doorbell last year, selling popcorn.

Every fall between October 1 and November 15, the Cub Scouts of Pack 907 hold their annual popcorn sale fun-draiser. This is the pack's only fundraiser and allows local Scouts to participate in educational activities, overnight trips and camps, obtain badges and achievements and to purchase much needed equip-ment and supplies. Popcorn prices start at just $10.00, and more than 70 percent of the revenue from the popcorn sales goes directly to Pack 907. But it's not just about the popcorn.

“Selling popcorn has taught them some pretty incredible life lessons,” said Patti Fralick, Jack and Sam's mom. “They've learned how to set and achieve goals, how to earn their way, and how to effectively communicate with people, even with the possibility of rejection. At their age, they're so often told of things they're not allowed to do, so it's great to watch them do this and see how much it helps them grow.”

For those wanting to support US military troops as well as Pack 907 Cub Scouts,

the popcorn fundraiser also offers an opportunity for people to contribute popcorn to US military troops stationed in Afghanistan, Iraq and all other US military bases, both overseas and domes-tic. For a $35.00 (silver) or $50.00 (gold) donation, Trails End Popcorn, through their "Popcorn for Our Troops" program, will send a delicious assortment of pop-corn to the brave men and women serv-ing in our military as a thank you for your support and for their dedication.

If Jack and Sam miss you this year, you can also purchase popcorn or donate to the Popcorn for Our Troops program online at www.trails-end.com. On the website customers are asked to identify a scout they'd like to support by entering the scout's first name and last initial (Sam F or Jack F). This ensures the sale will go back to the local troop, Pack 907. If you're not able to go onto the Trails-End website, just drop the boys' mom an email at [email protected], and she'll be sure to add you to the boy’s list

On the 11th day of the 11th month every year, we take the time to honor our veterans. We do our best to thank the men and women who have courageously fought for our country and ultimately our free-dom. But throughout a day of flag raisings, 21 gun salutes and choirs singing America the Beautiful, how many of us really know what we are thanking our veterans for?

their service was Japanese rice, unless they were lucky enough to get their hands on an orange. (Oranges were a hard to get com-modity as their Vitamin C was the only thing they had access to that could prevent scurvy.) They fought many diseases, most of which were never heard of in the U.S.: malaria, dysentery and jungle rot. When they contracted malaria, the only hope they had of surviving was found in a make-shift hospital inside a tent where they were given quinine and a chance to “sweat it out.”

They entered the war with the clothes on their backs and returned home wearing only rags. They watched their friends die, some in their very arms. They missed their children being born. Many didn’t get to attend the funerals of loved ones back home. Thousands never made it home at all.

The stories of sacrifice are found by the multitude in every war ever fought. Whether it was World War II, The Korean War, Vietnam or the Iraq War, our soldiers have felt the pain of sacri-

fice most of us will never have to endure. When a soldier comes home wounded, we are reminded of their selfless service. But we should understand, those who come home uninjured on the outside, return with wounds we cannot see.

SalutingOUR VETERANS

Sure, you may say it is the sacrifices they made that we are so thankful for, but the word “sacrifice” is one we often say, but don’t really understand.

In our world today, we may sacrifice some of the finer things of life: a new car, a kitchen remodeling project or even a day of shopping in order to pay for an unexpected necessity. These sacrifices may seem important to us in our daily lives, but try to imagine for a moment the life of an American soldier.

In 1941, just weeks after the Japanese attack on Peal Harbor, young men enlisted in the armed forces and prepared to give everything to protect our homeland and our freedom. They soon found out the sacrifices they would have to make.

Many just 18 years old, left their families and found themselves at Guadalcanal for 2 and a half years. They had no correspon-dence with their loved ones; their only meal for the duration of

When you take the time to thank the men and women who have fought for our freedom, look them in the eyes and tell them how much you appreciate their self-less acts of love, for they sacrificed every-thing so we wouldn’t have to.

We now salute all Bentwater residents and their families who are United States veterans and who registered with the POA. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your service.

Each summer Clint Ables, Paul Guilbault, Gary Kott and David Smith make their trek to fly fish on The South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho. This area is known for its superb "Dry Fly Fishing." This summer Paul landed what their guide Rollie Towler said was the "largest Brown that any of his clients had ever caught." The men quickly nicknamed the fish “Jaws.” It was so large that as Paul fought him, the fish pulled the boat. It took 15 minutes to get him in!

As we continue to look out for our neighbors and their homes and property, we must make sure we know what to do should we see suspicious activities.

Describing and reporting events requires quick, accurate descrip-tions. In attempting to describe events, write down the details of what you have observed while they are still fresh on your mind. This will ensure your descriptions to law enforcement officials will be as accurate as possible.

Write down:• Whathappened• Whenithappened• Whereitoccurred

o Note the address or landmark in relationship to the event.

Remember when a suspicious activity has occurred, the sheriff ’s office should be your first call, not the Bentwater gate greeters. And make the call quickly, as law enforcement officers would rather investigate than be called when it is too late.

UNITED WAYBentwater’s “Days of Caring” Offers Easter Seals-Sponsored Volunteer Opportunity

The Easter Seal’s service organization needs volunteers several times throughout the year for its Family Day Out program. The Family Day Out program is a day camp set up to give caregivers raising children with disabilities a much needed break.

The kids range in age from 6 to 14 years old and may have any type of disability from autism to cerebral palsy to vision impairment. The main goal of Family Day Out is to make sure the kids have a great time by taking part in crafts, movies, indoor and outdoor play time and lunch with the volunteer “buddy” or “buddies.” The local Family Day Out program takes place at The Woodlands United Method-ist Church from 9 – 2, usually the first

Saturday of the month. The next sched-uled dates for 2012 are: Nov. 3, and Dec. 1.

The Family Day Out program offers students opportunities to support and improve their community as well as enrich their lives at the same time. In addition, students could get community service credit with school-related organizations such as National Honors Society (NHS), Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and Interact.

Student volunteers should be at least 15 years old or accompanied by an adult. The adult will partner with the younger volunteer and then “buddy up” with one

of the kids. This is a great experience for volunteers of all ages.

Contact Kristi Carlisle at [email protected] or 936-760-4179 ext. 472, to get more information about the program and how to get involved.

Keep up with our United Way fundraising by watching the United Way goal thermometer right outside the fit-ness center.

To tell the truth, when I was asked to join the BUW Leadership Committee I thought, well maybe this is a way to give back, in addition to financially, and maybe I’ll meet some new friends.

It turns out I learned a lot about how many people are in need in Montgom-ery County and how well Montgomery County United Way attends to those needs.

I’m glad I was asked, and I’m glad I accepted.

I am part of Bentwater United WayWhy

It’s time to show you care! By now you should have received an invitation to support Bentwater’s 2012 United Way campaign. The leadership committee increased Bentwater’s goal this year to $147,000. Please help Bentwater reach that goal.  You can track our progress on the thermometer outside the sports club. All donations to MCUW stay in Montgomery County and are used to help people and organizations in our county "Your pledge helps Montgomery County United Way serve over 60

community programs, such as The Friendship Center, Women's Center, Conroe Family YMCA, and Montgomery County Emergency Assistance," said Bentwater United Way chair Patti Mennes. For those of you eligible to receive corporate match-ing gifts or who donate directly through an employer or former employer be sure to specify code 410 on your pledge card or matching gift request. That will insure that your money is used only in Montgomery County.

Two time award winner, Chef Patrick O’Neil, will prepare his famous chili at the Bentwater Chili For Charity Cook-off . “Come on out about 5 PM on Saturday, Nov 10! There will be good chili to taste from several cooks, all the teams support a charity, the silent auction presents great offerings, and the band is terrific. It is a lot of fun!” O’Neil stated.

A big gift dropped into Montgomery High School Theatre Director, and Bent-water resident, Suzanne Ray’s lap ; the honor for her theatre students to perform (along with 60 prestigious theatre pro-grams out of over 3,000 nominated appli-cants across the nation) at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland during August 2013. Suzanne and her husband, Jim, spent a week in Scotland this sum-mer familiarizing themselves with the details of the upcoming two-week experi-

ence and upon return, 30 students had signed up for the coveted theatre adven-ture.

Our community has the opportunity to support these students in this once of a lifetime endeavor. A dinner/fundraiser will be held at Bentwater Yacht Club on Friday, November 9th, 6:30 P. M., $40 inclusive per person with dinner and entertainment by our very own crooner, Luke Menefee, and talented Brenda

Storseth, long-term supporter of MHS Theatre. Scotland bound MHS students will enthusiastically serve as wait staff at each table and the sounds of Scottish bagpipes will infuse the evening.

Call 936-597-6219 to reserve your table. Invest in the lives of these future leaders. For more information, go to www.scotland2013.com or www.mhstheatre.org

Miniature Roses for the

Late fall is the best season to introduce yourself to florist minis. They're widely available, they're inexpensive, and they're perfect for indoor holiday decorations.

What is a Miniature Rose? For the most part, miniature roses are scaled-down versions of full-sized roses, and while they vary in many ways, all mini roses have small, rarely fragrant flowers. Plants can range from micro-minis (5 inches or less) to 3 to 4 feet or even larger.

Mini roses also adapt remarkably well to life indoors. Unlike so many houseplants that have an extraordinary tolerance of low light and humidity, roses need plenty of bright light, such as in a bright west- or south-facing window.

You'll also have to provide some extra humidity around the plants. In winter, the air in most houses becomes abysmal-ly dry. A water-filled tray with a layer of

Holidays

pebbles (to ease evaporation) is usually sufficient. Again, the plants will tell you if humidity is low; leaves will shrivel, yellow, and drop.

Growing Mini Roses Indoors1. Buy new plants each season to ensure

that your plants are free of diseases and pests. In November, order 2-inch potted plants from companies that specialize in miniature roses.

2. Select varieties described as good for pot forcing or suitable for containers. Many miniature roses are suitable, but those that are shorter and especially flo-riferous perform better.

3. When the 2-inch potted plants arrive, immediately repot each one into a 6-inch container.

4. Water thoroughly, and place the pots under fluorescent lights in trays with pebbles and water in them.

Not so long ago, miniature roses were almost strictly the province of hobbyists, usually ones already bitten by the rose-growing bug. But now, thanks to the influence of European gardeners and nurseries, an entirely new category of miniature rose is available here. In fact, these florist or European-style minis are the type you're most likely to encounter at supermarkets, chain stores, and discount stores. While the two types look pretty much the same to casual observers, it's useful to understand how these florist minis compare to the familiar miniature garden roses.

5. To reduce the chances of pests and diseases, bathe each plant once a week under running water, washing the undersides of leaves as well as the tops.

6. Fertilize weekly with a fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength.

7. Watch carefully for any sign of pests.

8. Buds should appear about 6 weeks after repotting. When the buds start to open, bring the pot into the living area to enjoy. Flowers should stay attractive and healthy for 10 to 14 days.

9. When flowering has finished, return plants to the light table and repeat the process for a second bloom cycle. Allow about 6 weeks for flowers to develop.

10. After the last frost in your area, gradu-ally acclimate plants to outdoor air. In spring, plant them in the garden or in an outdoor container.
