Dear Parents & Caregivers,

Vacation Our current school term ends this Friday and while I am always happy to have a break and spend more time with my family – this term we ALL need a break to better look after our health. We have had a couple of nasty bugs at school lately and everyone needs some time to recharge and get healthy, so the holidays are coming at exactly the right time. There is NOT a staff development day at the beginning of next term – school begins for students and teachers on Monday 8th October. Have a safe and relaxing break. Kindergarten 2013 We need to finalise our Kindergarten enrolments for 2013 early next term. We have orientation occurring from Monday 5th November and need to know our total numbers prior to that date. If you have a child starting next year, or know a neighbour that hasn’t informed the school, please do so quickly.

Kindergarten orientation will be a little different this year. New students and their parents will need to attend two sessions (Monday 5/11 & Monday 12/11 OR Tuesday 6/11 & Tuesday 13/11). The children will spend both sessions in the classroom while the parents will have 1 information session and 1 with the children in the rooms. We will also be offering 2 extra play sessions on Monday 19/11 & 26/11 at 2.00pm. These sessions are not for everyone but may help some students settle better at school or allow the teachers to better understand the needs of identified students. We will talk more about these at the orientation sesisons. The library will also hold a storytime session for new students on Friday 16th November. It will give the children a chance to meet the librarian, listen to a story and complete a craft activity. Parents are welcome to stay. I also hope to identify the 2013 Kindergarten teachers before the orientation dates so that you will have a chance to meet them on the day. NAPLAN The NAPLAN results have arrived at school. We have achieved some pleasing results, especially with the progress students have made from Year 3 to 5 where our progress in all areas is better than the state averages. Our spelling and numeracy results in Year 3 are significantly above state and national averages. I will share more on this at the next P & C meeting. Parents may come to the office today or tomorrow to collect their child’s results. Any uncollected results will be sent home with students on Thursday. Please contact Mrs Pearson (Year 3), Mr Wicks (Year 5) or Mr Leydon if you need help better understanding the results – it can be a little tricky! Thank you David Leydon Principal

Stage 3 Canberra Camp

Travel dates 10 – 12th September 2012 Last week, students from our school undertook an educational tour of our national capital, Canberra. While on our camp we participated in a variety of educational programs focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist our parents in meeting the cost of our trip to Canberra the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per eligible student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program toward the travel expense incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the school upon completion of our camp. The staff at Beresford Road Public School would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of our camp through the PACER program. Included in today’s newsletter are some student’s personal experiences of activities undertaken whilst we were on camp. Jerome Wicks Stage 3 Assistant Principal

K-2 Beresford Idol With over 80 students auditioning, it was very difficult to only choose 7 acts to proceed to the semi-finals. Congratulations to the semi-finalists who will now need to polish up their acts and keep practising over the holidays as the semi-finals will be held next term at the K-2 assembly on Friday 19th October at 12:15pm.

Parents of the competing semi-finalists are invited to join us for what should be a very entertaining assembly.

Stage 3 Canberra Camp

On camp we went to Parliament House on the first day. We started off going to the House of the Representatives which was all green and we saw the politicians introducing and debating about a new bill about the asylum seekers. During the time at the House of the Representatives we saw the mace that was painted gold. After that we went to the Senate which was the same as the House of the Representatives apart from the fact that the room was mainly red. There was also a rod that was called the black rod and the person who holds it is called the Usher of the Black Rod.

On stage 3 camp we went to Parliament House. We saw the House of Representatives and the Senate and while we were there we saw people debating new laws. In our time there we got to do a role play of what it is like to be in government and how difficult your job is and how many decisions you have to make.

The next day went to Perisher Valley to play in the snow. We had so much fun having snowball fights with our teachers. We slid down the snowy hills near the top of a mountain on our stomachs and that was so much fun. Our principal, Mr Leydon, accidently knocked over Mr Wicks who was filming us sliding down the mountain.

On camp we went to the War Memorial to better remember the people who had died during the various wars. In the War Memorial we had a look at some engines from planes, military vehicles and a helicopter.

On the last day of camp we went to Questacon and had a look at some of the science stuff that they had and some of the stuff was interactive. At Questacon we saw caged lightning that went off every fifteen minutes. It was so much fun!

On the 11th of September, the second day of camp, we went to Perisher. It took us forever to get there but we finally got there. On the way we saw many animals and many mountains covered with snow. When we got there we went on the chairlifts-it was so high and scary. When we were on the top of the mountains we had snow fights with all the teachers. Mr Wicks was having a really good time sliding down the mountain with all the teachers. Everyone had a fantastic day at the snow, unfortunately our day had to end.

The last day of camp we went to the Australian Institute of Sport and we had a chance to do many activities like rock climbing, bob sledding where the cold wind would blow in your face. There was also a very awesome skiing game and reflex testing. We also got to experience what it would be like to play basketball in a wheelchair. After that we went and had a look at where the Olympians train on the volleyball courts, swimming pool and gymnastics arena.

Binalong Oval & Wentworthville PS) Sydney West Athletics CONGRATULATIONS to the 3 students that competed at last week’s Sydney West Athletics Championships.

We had some fantastic results with Teagan Neich finishing in 11th place in the Junior Discus and Karl Khouiss finished in 28th place in the 10yrs 100m.

Mackenzie Haladus came 2nd in the 8yrs girls 100m in a time of 15.85 seconds and she has qualified to run at the NSW Championships to be held in October at Homebush.

Mackenzie has bettered the school record she previously beat at our Zone Carnival by another half of a second. I wonder how fast she is going to go in the State Championships.

WELL DONE!!!

Soccer Jerseys Return ASAP All students who were given a soccer jersey to compete in for Winter PSSA are requested to return the jersey to Mr Wicks ASAP. Please ensure the jersey is washed and placed into a plastic bag with your name clearly marked on the front. Thanks Jerome Wicks

P&C NEWS

Coin Collection On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, the P&C will be coming around to all classes to collect your 5 cent and other Australian coins. Every cent helps us get closer to that goal of having a smartboard in every classroom. One more collection will take place on the 5th and 6th December and then the class who has collected the most across the year will be rewarded with a special treat. Keep watching the P&C noticeboard to see how your class is going! Peddlars Parade Our main fundraiser for term 4 will be a new event for Beresford - a Peddlars Parade. Each student will need to find a tray (like the lid of a photocopy paper box), decorate it ready for Christmas and then fill it with new products, home made items or home-baked goodies. The tray will need to be wrapped in cellophane, priced between $10 and $30 and will then be paraded by the students in a special "Peddlars Parade". After the parade finishes the trays will be available to be purchased - what a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping and raise money for the school at the same time. During the school holidays you may want to start thinking about how to decorate your tray and what to put in it - perhaps you can get some products donated from your workplace? For more information, please see the poster on the P&C noticeboard or talk with one of our friendly P&C committee members. Thank you Beresford Road P & C Committee
