No, you’re not imagining things. The page size in this issue of Bergen Health & Life magazine is a little smaller than in our usual issues. We wanted to make it espe-cially handy.

In this annual Guide issue, instead of our usual mix of articles, we present a 19-category alphabetical list of des-tinations and services in Bergen County, from bakeries to boutiques, mu-seums to movie theaters, delis to diners. You’ll want to look up your favorite establishments here. (And if we’ve missed one we should include, please let us know so we can add it next year.)

Lists can be fun in themselves—years ago, a book made up of lists became a national publishing smash. But we’re hoping this one is a practical resource you’ll want to keep close. Whether you’ve just moved to Bergen or have been living here for decades, our list can be a rich source of “where to go” and “what to do” ideas. And luckily, our county has it all: fantastic shopping, fi ve-star cuisine, indoor and outdoor activities galore and an exciting mix of arts, culture and music.

Speaking of music, there’s more in this issue. On page 18, read about Bergen’s fascinating history as an innovative music hub. If you’re feeling brave, turn to page 20 to check out six spots in the county that are believed to be haunted. Finally, learn fun facts on page 22 and test your knowledge by identifying a “mystery” Bergen County landmark, page 72.

Isn’t this a great county? Happy list-browsing!

Hope & Help for Low Back and Leg Pain Sufferers

If you’re suffering from back pain, don’t despair. Dr. Alfred Gigante, a Chiropractic Physician, has dedicated the last 25 years to specializing in the treatment of low back pain and low back related leg pain, commonly known as sciatica. With today’s new non-force techniques, many of which were developed by Dr. Gigante, along with laser, spinal decompression, ultrasound, and electro therapies, he states, “the probability of relief is better than ever for all back patients even those considering surgery”.

Dr. Gigante, who has lectured internationally on spinal care adds, “our goal is simple, to get patients out of pain as quickly as possible”. “In

fact, eight out of ten of all our new patients experience a signifi cant improvement after their very fi rst visit.”

If you are suffering from low back pain and/or sciatica, give The Back Pain Center a call.

If you are not sure if your problem requires chiropractic, physical therapy, medications or even possibly surgery, then call and ask for a no-charge consultation with Dr. Gigante. Together you can determine the right course of action for your condition.

The Back Pain Center was founded by Dr. Gigante in 1995, as the fi rst team of Chiropractors, Physical Therapists and Pain Management Doctors, to dedicate their skills specifi cally to the treatment of low back pain

and low back related leg pain. The Back Pain Center works with most insurance companies.

with Customized Knee Replacement.

At 73 years young, Phyllis Teats is a grandma on the go. Whether hosting a poolside picnic or cheering at her grandson’s ball games, there’s not much that keeps her on the sidelines. Even with crippling pain from severe arthritis, Phyllis hobbled to activities with ice packs, creams, wraps and other remedies—until she realized that two bad knees had diminished her enjoyment of life.

“My arthritis was so bad that my bones were rubbing together and I was in constant pain. I was walking

like a soldier,” said Phyllis. “I could barely stand during the day or sleep at night, and began to fear that my

legs would give out.”

In May 2013, Phyllis consulted with board-certified orthopaedic surgeon Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS, who

recommended customized knee replacement. Unlike traditional surgery, this cutting-edge

procedure uses MRI imaging and computer software to generate a 3-D model of the joint.

“Just as no two personalities are alike, knee joints are unique to each individual,” said Dr.

Kayal. “With this revolutionary technique, Phyllis received two new and improved joints made especially for her.”

Phyllis elected to have both knees replaced, and both procedures were highly successful.

She can once again bend her knees without pain, and is noticing greater balance, stability and motion. With a spring in her step, Phyllis is anticipating this summer’s baseball games, barbecues and other family activities. “I’m improving every day, and life is even better than it was before,” she said.

n palisades amusement park the 30-acre attraction, which straddled Cliffside park and Fort lee, was one of the most visited amuse-ment parks in the country during its run from 1898 to 1971. ironically, the park’s popularity led to its demise; the enormous summer crowds were more than the small communities could handle and the park was torn down to make way for luxury high-rise apartment buildings. the first two built on the site were the Winston towers, followed by Carlyle towers and the royal Buckingham.

n Maywood Station on March 11, 1872, the first passenger train rolled into Maywood Station. Six trains a day in each direction initially stopped there, reaching a peak of 13 a day in the 1920s. the last passenger train pulled into the station on June 30, 1966, and shortly thereafter it was shuttered. Fortunately, the historic structure was rescued from demolition in 2002 by a nonprofit group that restored it and transformed it into the Maywood Station Museum. today, the museum is listed on both the national Register and State of new Jersey Register of Historic Places.

A bent for jAzzThe great trumpeter, bandleader and composer DizzyGillespie (1917–1993), an Englewood resident for his last 28 years, helped to develop the bebop style of jazz. He came up in Cab Calloway’s band, but was fired by Calloway in 1941 when the two men’s eccentricities clashed. He sang with Ella Fitzgerald and wrote big-band music for Jimmy Dorsey. In 1953, when someone at a party accidentally fell on his trum-pet and bent it, Gillespie picked up the instrument, played it, decided it sounded better that way—and ordered trumpets in that bent shape for the rest of his career. Gillespie told his life story in the 1979 book To Be or Not to Bop and helped establish a memorial fund at Englewood Hospital and Medi-cal Center to help pay for the care of ailing jazz musicians.

Whether they grew up here or moved here, musical greats in many genres fit right into our county’s scene. here are a few top talents—and one lost landmark.

GuitArist? Les wAs moreborn Lester William Polsfuss, longtime Mahwah resident Les Paul (1915–2009) will always be remembered as the inventor of the har-monica neck holder (whose basic design is still manufactured today) and a pioneer of the solid-body electric guitar. Paul started touring semi-professionally at age 8, performing as a country-music singer, guitarist and harmonica player. The world-famous Gibson Les Paul guitar was fashioned from a four-foot wooden board Paul created in the 1940s. The two-time Grammy winner became the only person to be included in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

She followed that up with hits like “Judy’s Turn to Cry” and “You Don’t Own Me”—the latter charted for three weeks at number 2, nosed out by the beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” She attended Englewood’s Dwight School for Girls. Later, she and her brother Michael copped an academy award nomination for a song they wrote for the 1980 film Fame, and during the 2012 election campaign she turned “You Don’t Own Me” into a feminist video starring writer/actress Lena Dunham and actress Tavi Gevinson. Gore died of lung cancer last February.

Yup. She’S Survived.

Singer Gloria Gaynor has kept the promise she sang

in the 1978 megahit that made her a disco immortal. But when the then Cliffside

Park resident recorded “I Will Survive” it was actually released as a B side—without the background voices and hyped-up speed typical of the era’s disco hits. A Boston DJ played it and, as he recalled, “listeners went nuts.” The song won a Grammy, and the singer went on to survive the disco era with appearances on the TV series Ally McBeal, The Wayans Bros. and That ’70s Show and on Broadway in Smokey Joe’s Café, and induction into the Dance Music Hall of Fame.

The park iS gone; The melodY lingerS onPalisades Amusement Park, which operated from 1898 to 1971, was known for its salt-water swimming pool, vinegar-soaked French fries and the Cyclone and Wild Mouse roller coasters. But it was the 1962 rock ‘n’ roll song “Palisades Park,” written by Chuck Barris and sung by Freddy Can-non, that immortalized the park in song. The tune peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1962 after a radio DJ in Flint, Michigan, played it by accident. It’s been performed by Jan & Dean, the Beach Boys and Bruce Springs-teen. The park hosted concerts by top acts such as Neil Sedaka, Ron-nie Spector, Lesley Gore and Little Anthony. Sadly, local residents in Cliffside Park and Fort Lee grew tired of the crowds and traffic jams the park drew and successfully petitioned to have the property rezoned and sold to a developer who created (surprise!) high-rise apartment buildings.

Singing SibS

The FonTane SiSTerS of New Milford—Bea (1915–2002), Marge (1917– 2003) and Geri (1921–1993)—caught the music bug from their mom, who sang in a local church choir. They were really surnamed Rosse (as was a guitarist brother, Frank, who was killed in action in World War II) but took the name Fontaine from a great-grandmother and dropped the “i.” The all-girl group signed with RCA Records and soon appeared on NBC radio and TV shows including The Perry Como

Show. They racked up 10 Billboard Top 40 hits.

The iSleY broTherS

moved here from Cincin-nati in the late 1950s.

Rudolph, Ronald and

O’Kelly Isley Jr., were later joined in

the group by brothers Ernie, Marvin and Vernon and brother-in-law Chris Jasper. At one point one brother lived in Teaneck, one in Alpine, one in Haworth and one in Englewood. The group’s 20-plus hits included “Twist and Shout” (before four Liverpudlians covered it) and “It’s Your Thing.” Career stats for the Isleys included four Top 10 singles on the Billboard chart and 16 albums in the Top 40. The brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

As the story goes, the JonaS broTherS

of Wyckoff were discovered while singing in a barber shop, eventually landing brother Nick on Broadway at age 7 (in A Christmas Carol). Brother Joe soon followed in Nick’s footsteps, appearing in Broadway’s La Boheme before Kevin became part of the trio as well. Success came calling: A record deal with Columbia led to movies, a TV series and a Grammy nomination. In 2013 the broth-ers announced the band was calling it quits, but fans hope it’s not forever.

local idolRaised in Ridgewood, Jordin Sparks spent a

lot of time watching football. Natch—her dad was a defensive back for the New

York Giants. Her own rise to fame came at age 17 when she triumphed in the sixth season of TV’s American Idol.

Her first album went platinum, featuring the hits “Tattoo” and “No Air,” the latter earning Sparks her first Grammy nomi-nation. Then came TV appearances and a role in the Broadway musical In the Heights. A movie, new albums and a few perfumes later, her career is still giving off, err, sparks.

Full oF gleeSinging in the choir at Tenafly High was but a prelude for singer/actress Lea Michele, known for the role of star singer Rachel Berry on the hit TV show Glee. Born Lea Michele Sarfati (she changed her name while auditioning for a role she eventually landed in Broadway’s Les Miserables), Michele also appeared in Ragtime and Fiddler on the Roof. Albums, books, TV shows and awards have kept coming.

A county that dates back before the American Revo-lution clearly has thousands of residents who are no longer with us. But a few of them, to hear some folks tell it, aren’t quite finished paying us visits. Here are six places these ghosts are said to frequent.

BERGEN HAUNTs

The hermiTage George Washington, Aaron Burr, James Monroe and many other historic figures visited this 18th-century Gothic Revival home (now a museum) in Ho-Ho-Kus during their lifetimes. And, apparently, many others have chosen to visit after their deaths. The suggestive evidence includes lights turning on and off, the sound of a woman’s cries, the scent of a woman’s perfume and a metronome keep-ing time on a piano without the aid of electricity or a human hand. Some visitors have even reported feeling an invisible touch when no one else was in the room. The Hermitage has such a rich haunted history that a local medium has hosted paranormal tours there during the lead-up to Halloween.

The crayhay mansion

This 1864 home on Franklin Avenue in Midland Park, owned by the Crayhay family from 1906 to 1934, is believed to be one of the most haunted homes in the state. Among the spirits spotted roaming its halls: Max Crayhay, who committed suicide in the barn, a girl named Rose who fell to her death from a third-floor bedroom window, an old woman who was shot and killed during a robbery attempt and a young boy who allegedly died in an accident. Then there’s the yellow and white cat that haunts the third floor.

ElizabEth cady stanton housE This 1860 Second Empire-style home in Tenafly sold this year for $3 million—obviously a few apparitions didn’t scare away buyers! According to legend, the National Historic Landmark has been the site of numer-ous paranormal activities over the years: lights turning on and off, doors slamming and strange unexplained noises. Some attribute these occurrences to two tragic incidents—a suicide in a third-floor bedroom and a stabbing death elsewhere in the house.

spook bridgE Legend has it that during the American Revolution a contingent of Continental soldiers guarding the small bridge in Paramus were murdered by a local Tory farmer who offered them poisoned apple cider. Their bodies were buried east of the bridge, and for some time after-ward horses did not want to cross it. Hence the moniker Spook Bridge.

dEvil‘s towEr In the ultra-exclusive Rio Vista neighborhood in Alpine, wealthy Southern plantation owner Manuel Rionda erected this stone clock tower on his property in the early 1900s. Some say he built it for his wife so that she could have a view of New York City. Others contend it was built for religious purposes or possibly to be used as a family mausoleum. Regardless, his wife allegedly jumped to her death from the tower after seeing her husband with another woman. It is said that her apparition appears in the windows, and visitors claim they can still smell her perfume. At one point the tower was slated for demolition, but the plan was scrapped after several workmen reportedly fell to their death. Locals soon started referring to the structure as Devil’s Tower.

stEubEn housE George Washington spent more than two weeks here in 1780, but this Revolutionary War landmark in River Edge is also known for the ghost who visited in 1951. According to legend, Baron von Steuben returned to his former home, settled into a chair and struck up a conversation with a woman who was there at the time. It seems von Steuben wanted an update on the war. When told that it had been over for nearly 200 years, the stunned phantom reportedly disappeared.

CATHOLIC CEMETERIES, ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK

171 Clifton Ave., Newark, NJ 888.498.5209 catholicjourney.org

MAKING CEMETERY ARRANGEMENTS in a moment of crisis often causes loved ones to make rushed decisions that contribute to the anxiety of an already-difficult time. However, pre-planning final arrangements for yourself or a loved one helps alleviate stress and allows a family to carefully consider all options in a thoughtful and unhurried manner. Catholic Cemeteries, a ministry of the Archdiocese of Newark, recognizes the benefits of pre-planning for Catholic families. It allows more time for personalization of how one wishes to be memorialized and for practical financial planning. The pre-selection of burial space on your own time and terms together with your family is a loving gesture. When the responsibility of final arrangements is fulfilled, loved ones can focus on remembering and celebrating a life. A Catholic cemetery memorialization is an affirmation of faith and honors a family’s legacy for generations to come. Visit www.CatholicJourney.org.

Bergen County is known for its malls, of course. But there are so many other things to do here that don’t involve retail therapy. Play golf, go horseback riding, watch harness racing, take a cooking class, strap on a pair of ice skates—there’s never a dull moment in Bergen.

BOOKSTORESAs much as you may love your Kindle or ordering books from Amazon, you have to admit it’s fun to browse in a bookstore. You never know what treasures you’ll find on the shelves or whom you’ll bump into, whether it be a friend or a famous author sign-ing his or her latest work. Happily, such places still exist here.
