MCCLAIN CENTERUNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- MADISON

Completed 2013 . $11 Million 72,056 SF . LEED™ Silver

The lower level of the McClain Center provides a cohesive space for football operations and sports medicine. With the intensity and high-use of the football program, durability of finish was a high priority.

In addition to the current football team and staff, prospective student athletes will also be frequent visitors to the facility as a part of the on-going recruiting effort of the University. To support and enhance the recruiting program, the public and circulation areas have high-quality finishes and materials centered around environmental graphics illustrating the rich history and success of UW Athletics.

The McClain Center also houses the locker rooms for several Olympic team sports, including men’s and women’s track, and men’s and women’s soccer. These student athletes, as well as others remotely located, have access to the high-quality training and sports-medicine facilities co-located with football operations.

SATELLITE CORPORATE OFFICESECURA INSURANCE, APPLETON, WI

Completed 2015 . $2.4 Million25,000 SF

In late 2014, Secura Insurance of Appleton, WI leased a vacant property on the city’s south side to accommodate its growing employee population. At the time the lease agreement was entered, the property was a brick building shell, with no delin-eated space and a gravel floor. The intent was to relocate approximately 200 of the company’s employees to the new location within a year. Berners-Schober saw the empty shell as an opportunity to transform this building into a welcoming professional environ-ment. A new entryway greets employees and guests into the facility. The warm color palee is accented with woodgrains. The facility includes 140 open office workstations, 20 private offices, three conference rooms, and several collaborative work areas. A newly furnished break room and kitchenee area doubles as a large group meeting and presentation space. A private patio was created to allow the employees to enjoy the outdoors during the summer.

HORIZON VILLAGE - NEW RESIDENCE HALLUNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN OSHKOSH, OSHKOSH, WI

Completed 2012 . $27.6 Million165,000 SF . LEED™ Gold

The Horizon Village residence hall at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh houses a combination of 350 suite-style and traditional-plus units, configured in a five-story building. Additional apartments accommodate residence hall staff. One and two story lounges are located at the ends and center of each floor, near the elevators. Main floor spaces include: meeting rooms, a computer lab, study spaces and a recreation area.

The north-south orientation brings direct daylight into each unit for several hours a day. Each unit has a large bay window in the living space, with varying types of glass for optimum light and restricted solar gain. The project features several other sustainable design elements, including green roofs and a geothermal well field under the semi-circular recreation lawn. The integration of technologically sound masonry detailing with building systems efficiency was designed to provide Horizon Village with an energy consumption rate almost 50% lower than a typical code-compliant building.

PEDIATRICS HEMATOLOGY & ONCOLOGY CLINIC PREVEA HEALTH at ST. VINCENT’S HOSPITAL, GREEN BAY, WI

Completed 2013 . $1.1 Million5,800 SF Addition & Remodel

“A vibrant city needs a vibrant hospital, and that’s what we have here in Chippewa Falls.”

Chippewa News Bureau “Chippewa Geing Beer with Age”April 2011, Chris Veer

Prevea’s Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic located in St. Vincent Hospital was remodeled to expand clinical services to accommodate a growing pediatric patient population and to continue to define the market standard for progres-sive, family centered care and treatment for cancer and blood disorders.

The design team created an environment within the clinic that depicts an abstraction of childhood journey experiences; walking along the water, hopping along on stepping stones and strolling through the woods. Since the majority of the patients have a suppressed immune system, finishes that are easily cleanable without harsh chemicals and handrails with an antimicrobial finish were selected. Sound masking installed above the ceiling was used to provide verbal privacy for the patients and their families. Design elements such as ceiling clouds, fiberoptic lights installed to mimic stars, color changing LED lights and large pieces of artwork were used for positive distractions while the patients are undergoing treatment.

SAGE HALL - NEW ACADEMIC BUILDINGUNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN OSHKOSH, OSHKOSH, WI

Completed 2011 . $28 Million 191,000 SF . LEED™ Gold

Sage Hall, the first new academic building on the UW Oshkosh campus in over 40 years, was designed to facilitate formal academic instruction, informal experiential learning, and social interaction among students and faculty. The building was awarded LEED™ Gold status, demonstrating the university’s commitment to sustainability.

To achieve the Gold rating, Sage Hall’s design incorporated solar thermal collectors on the roof, radiant heating and cooling in the floor slabs, and deep light shelves to optimize natural lighting. Local, renewable and recycled materials were used wherever possible, and storm water is managed on-site. The design and placement of the building addressed issues of access, visibility, and proximity to other academic buildings. While its interior incorporates the latest technological advances, Sage Hall’s exterior brick and cast stone respect the aesthetics of the rest of campus.

NORTHERN REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS & SERVICE CENTERWISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, SPOONER, WI

Completed 2012 . $4.2 Million18,000 SF . LEED™ Gold

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources posed a challenging design problem at their site in Spooner WI. Create a new facility to serve as the co-regional headquarters, on an existing site, without disrupting the operations of the current facility (to be demolished later). In addition to the design challenge, three major goals were set for the project: to achieve LEED™ Gold certification, to design a site and building that truly engaged the public, and to create a comfortable and efficient work environment.

Distinctive design elements include an airy, welcoming visitor entrance; curved, glue-laminated wood beam structure; and clerestory windows for daylight in the main office space. Outdoor elements include an employee plaza with water feature, and sculptural interpretive signs along paths on the DNR grounds. Stormwater is held on site through the use of bioswales, rain gardens and detention basins, all linked by the surround terrain, the site’s unifying aesthetic element. This integration of the landscape with the building acts as a seamless design and educational element.

Prevea Health and St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center set-out to create the first all-inclusive orthopedic center in Northeast Wisconsin. This 28,000 SF space creates a centralized, comprehensive center of care covering a variety of medical special-ties including: orthopedics, rheumatology, physiatry, podiatry, spine, physical and occupational therapy for the hand, foot and ankle joints. The revitalized space offers a fresh take on Prevea’s well-known brand, while creating an active and vibrant clinical environment.

The facility features three clinical pods with central nurse/support functions, and a fourth, central pod for x-ray diagnosticsfunctions. WEST ADDITIONST. MARY’S HOSPITAL MEDICAL CENTER, GREEN BAY, WI

Completed 2010 . $22.7 Million 117,000 SF Addition

Adding a three story addition to St. Mary’s Hospital provided the opportunity to give the facility not only a regional cancer center, but also a new main entrance, all designed to be consistent with the new branding of the Hospital Sisters Health System. The environmentally sustainable cancer center offers what the owner refers to as “state-of-the-art HOPE; the best in cancer treatment, technology and compassionate care, enhanced by beautiful greenery to inspire” and help heal patients.

The Addition’s third level provides entry to the largest green roof in Wisconsin. Benches line 2,400 square feet of paths amongst 22,000 square feet of succulent plants. In addition to providing a peaceful space to view nature, the “living roof” reduces the heat-island effect of a large roof, and helps to reduce noise levels in and around the building.

ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL FIRE RESTORATIONST. ANTHONY PARISH, OCONTO FALLS, WI

Completed 2013 . $2.35 Million15,457 SF Renovation

An arson fire in February of 2012 devastated St. Anthony School in Oconto Falls. The combined effects of smoke, fire, water for fire suppression and exposure to weather le the majority of the building’s interior in need of replacement. This gave the school the opportunity to reconfigure spaces that were no longer used as originally built, and to provide accessibility to all floors of the building with a new elevator.

Entry from both sides of the school now opens into a lobby with offices and reception desk. The arrangement created a secure entry for the school and facilitated circulation to the adjacent church, which was untouched by the fire. While 1st floor classrooms, toilets and lockers stayed in the same general location, they were reconfigured to include a library, computer room and multiple storage and display options. The partial 2nd floor, which had originally housed teaching sisters, received a completely new plan to support religious education and parish meetings. The building was ready for students by the summer of 2013. Client Contact:Tom Malingowski, OwnerSt. Anthony Parish, 920.846.2276

EMERGENCY ROOM EXPANSIONST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL, CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI

Completed 2010 . $6.7 Million8,000 SF Addition/5,000 SF Remodel

As the only emergency service in the county that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Emergency Room Expansion at St. Joseph’s Hospital provides an increase in patient treatment areas and staff support spaces while supporting improved operational efficiencies, and more than doubling the existing Emergency Room. Natural elements and a soothing water feature provide a calming area in the typically high-stress environment of an emergency room. The expansion creates a new, dedicated public entrance, which contributes to improved facility security. Full-height windows offer a connection to the outdoors, while an earth-toned palee adds warmth, avoiding the sterile feeling of standard hospital environments. Patient and guest areas include 13-15 treatment rooms and a comfortable, child-friendly lobby/waiting area. Patient care functions are improved with the new, large central nursing/physician area with surrounding treatment rooms so staff can monitor and respond quickly to patients’ needs.

ICT REMODELING – INTER-OPERATIVE CT SCANNERSACRED HEART HOSPITAL, EAU CLAIRE, WI

Completed 20092,200 SF Remodel

Sacred Heart Hospital required a room to assist with spine and neurological surgery procedures. This 2,200 sf remodeling provided an intense combination of the latest CT technology within an operating room. Tight coordination of drawings and schedules was required to limit disruptions to the adjacent occupied surgical suite throughout construction.

Constructed as a room within a room, the interior walls are vendor-provided lead shields that contain all of the room infrastructure and connection points for the medical equipment, and CT technology. The exterior walls were constructed as a shell to house the ICT suite.

The CT scanner glides over ceiling-mounted rails to the patient when surgeons need to perform a scan during the procedure. Aer the images are taken, the CT slides back to its original position, and the images from the intraoperative scan are automatically registered to vendor soware. Those images also can be fused with scans from other modalities, such as PET.

RAY AND JOAN KROC CORPS COMMUNITY CENTERTHE SALVATION ARMY, GREEN BAY, WI

Completed 2011 . $22 Million101,927 SF . LEED™ Silver

The facility’s three-wing design symbolizes the 3 primary components of the facility’s mission statement: “Encourage, Enrich and Strengthen.” The building was designed to provide a welcoming feeling and yet evoke a youthful spirit, while creating a timeless sense of strength and solidity. Local artists were commissioned to add regional imagery throughout the facility with themes including: nature, water, and trains. The exterior also boasts the regional heritage through the use of traditional masonry construction and industrial metal panels signifying the rail systems that run through the Green Bay area.

The Kroc Community Center has been awarded a Silver rating in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) certification. Some of the green initiatives that led to this achievement include: low-flow plumbing fixtures (yield a 33% water saving); landscaping designed to minimize maintenance and motorized lawn care; an energy-efficient pool heating system; use of material extracted, harvested, and manufactured within a 500 mile radius of the project (41% of materials); high indoor environmental quality due to low VOC materials; and efficient systematic controls like occupancy and daylight sensors.

VISITOR AND CONFERENCE CENTERGREEN BAY BOTANICAL GARDEN, GREEN BAY, WI

Completed 2011. $2.265 Million12,240 SF Addition, 7,200 SF Remodel

The Green Bay Botanical Garden added a Conference Center and remodeled its existing Visitor Center to offer two new multi-purpose spaces to the community for wedding receptions, conferences, meetings and educational functions. The renovation updated the reception area of the existing building, offering greater visibility to the gi shop and adding a simple but refined fireplace as a warm focus to the gathering space.

The Conference Center addition, similar to other Botanical Garden buildings, is clad in glass and natural materials to harmo-nize with the surrounding landscape. Its inverted roof form (likened to buerfly wings) allows daylight to flood the interior. While maintaining continuity of materials with the original building, the addition has its own respectfully prominent entry to clarify way-finding for special events.

ROSEMARY GARFOOT PUBLIC LIBRARY VILLAGE OF CROSS PLAINS, CROSS PLAINS, WI

Completed 2006 . $2.2 Million15,150 SF . LEED™ Silver

Energy efficiency and community input were key in the design of Wisconsin’s first “green” library. This was achieved through multiple design charrees and focus groups resulting in a sophisticated but straight-forward public space. The library provides a larger, more flexible, and technologically capable facility designed to meet the needs of the community now and into the future.

An exterior environmental feature of the library, the rain garden, is designed to soak up rain water, reduce run-off into streams and lakes, and reduce local flooding. Due to the building orientation and window expanses, 90% of the spaces offer daylighting and exterior views. From the south, sunlight is controlled to allow maximum heat gain in the winter and shield from solar gain in the summer. The HVAC system is highly efficient and recovers and reuses conditioned air.

NORTHEAST REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS & SERVICE CENTERWISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, HOWARD, WI

Completed 2005 . $5.1 Million24,560 SF

Design for a new DNR headquarters answered the call to create a sustainable, energy-efficient, aesthetically-pleasing facility while maintaining harmony between work spaces and the outdoor environment.

Through thoughtful massing, orientation, and envelope optimization, the building was designed as a filter to provide glare-free natural daylighting, and reject summer heat gain in conjunction with efficient HVAC and lighting systems. The new facility includes a modest lobby/customer service area, meeting room, and conference room. The site also includes visitor parking spaces, along with staff, fleet, and preferred parking for carpoolers. Adding to the DNR’s core values, the fundamentals in the design of this facility adhered to our shared belief in the concept of whole building design.

EAST SIDE YMCAYMCA, GREEN BAY, WI

Completed 2000 . $9 Million90,000 SF

Berners-Schober is very proud to be part of an enduring architect/client relationship with the Greater Green Bay YMCA. The previous generation of Foeller, Schober and Stephenson designed the original downtown Green Bay YMCA in 1924.

Our firm has since been involved in the continued maintenance and expansion of this facility, receiving a Mayor’s Beautifica-tion Award from the City of Green Bay in 1980, and an Historic Preservation Commission Award in 2004. As YMCA mem-bership and programming requirements changed, our firm designed three new facilities for the YMCA. In 1985, our firm began work on the Broadview YMCA, located in Allouez. We have overseen several upgrade projects at this facility since completing a large expansion and remodeling of the original building.

Other projects have included the West Side YMCA, East Side YMCA, and the Day Camp facilities in Brussesls and Suring, Wisconsin.
