Beshalach 1st Portion (Exo 13)17 It came to pass when Pharaoh let the people go, that Elohim did not lead them by way of the land of the P’lishtim for it was near, because Elohim said, “Lest the people regret when they see fighting and return to Mitsrayim.” 18 So Elohim led the people around by way of the wilderness to the Sea of Suf. And the children of Isra’el were armed when they went up out of Mitsrayim.

Beshalach 1st Portion (Exo 13)

19 Moshe took Yosef’s bones with him, for he Yosef had adjured the children of Isra’el, saying, “Elohim shall certainly visit you, and you shall bring up my bones from here with you.”20 They traveled from Sukkot, and they camped in Etam at the edge of the wilderness.

Beshalach 1st Portion (Exo 13-14)

21 And יהוה went before them by day in a column of cloud to cause it to lead them on the way and at night in a column of fire to give them light, they thus could travel day and night. 22 He did not move away the column of cloud by day or the column of fire at night from before the people.,spoke to Moshe, saying יהוה 1

2 “Speak to the children of Isra’el, and let them turn back and camp in front of Pi-Hachirot, between Migdol and the sea; in front of Ba‘al-Tz’fon, you shall camp opposite it, by the sea. 3 And Pharaoh shall say about the children of Isra’el, ‘They are entangled in the land, the wilderness has closed in upon them.’

Page 5: Beshalach

Beshalach 1st Portion (Exo 14)4 And I shall harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he shall pursue them. And I will be esteemed through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Mitsrites shall know that I am יהוה.” And they did so.5 And it was reported to the sovereign of Mitsrayim that the people had fled, and the heart of Pharaoh and his servants was turned against the people, and they said, “Why have we done this, that we have let Isra’el go from serving us?”

Page 6: Beshalach

Beshalach 1st Portion (Exo 14)6 So he Pharaoh made his chariot ready and took his people with him. 7 And he took six hundred choice chariots, and all the other chariots of Mitsrayim with officers over all of them. 8 And יהוה hardened the heart of Pharaoh sovereign of Mitsrayim, and he pursued the children of Isra’el, and the children of Isra’el went out defiantly.

Beshalach 2nd Portion (Exo 14)

9 The Mitsrites pursued them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them camping by the sea beside Pi-Hachirot, before Ba‘al-Tz’fon.10 And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Isra’el lifted their eyes, and behold! the Mitsrites were advancing after them. And they were very afraid, so the children of Isra’el cried out to יהוה for help.

Page 8: Beshalach

Beshalach 2nd Portion (Exo 14)

11 And they said to Moshe, “Is it because there were no graves in Mitsrayim that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What is this that you have done to us to bring us up out of Mitsrayim? 12 Is this not the word about which we spoke to you in Mitsrayim, saying, ‘Leave us alone, and we will serve the Mitsrites’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Mitsrites than to die in the wilderness.”

Page 9: Beshalach

Beshalach 2nd Portion (Exo 14)

13 And Moshe said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the deliverance of יהוה, which he will wreak for you today. For the way you have seen the Mitsrites is only today, but you will never see them again forever. 14 יהוה will fight for you, but you shall keep still.”

Page 10: Beshalach

Beshalach 3rd Portion (Exo 14)

15 And יהוה said to Moshe, “Why do you cry to me? Speak to the children of Isra’el and let them go forward. 16 And you lift up your rod and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the children of Isra’el shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. 17 And I, see I will harden the hearts of the Mitsrites, and they shall follow them. And I will be esteemed through Pharaoh and over all his army, his chariots and his horsemen.

Page 11: Beshalach

Beshalach 3rd Portion (Exo 14)

18 And the Mitsrites shall know that I am יהוה when I am esteemed through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”19 And the messenger of Elohim, who went before the camp of Isra’el, moved and went behind them. And the column of cloud went from before them and stood behind them.

Page 12: Beshalach

Beshalach 3rd Portion (Exo 14)

20 And he came between the camp of the Mitsrites and the camp of Isra’el. And it was the cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, and one did not come near the other all the night.21 And Moshe stretched out his hand over the sea, and יהוה caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided,

Page 13: Beshalach

Beshalach 3rd Portion (Exo 14)

22 and the children of Isra’el went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right and on their left.23 And the Mitsrites pursued and went after them into the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots and his horsemen.

Page 14: Beshalach

Beshalach 3rd Portion (Exo 14)

24 It came about that in the morning watch יהוה looked down at the army of the Mitsrites through the column of fire and cloud and brought the army of the Mitsrites into confusion. 25 And he removed the wheels of their chariots, and they drove them with heaviness. And the Mitsrites said, “Let me run away from the face of Isra’el because יהוה is fighting for them against the Mitsrites.”

Page 15: Beshalach

Beshalach 4th Portion (Exo 14)

26 Then יהוה said to Moshe, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, and let the waters come back upon the Mitsrites, on their chariots, and on their horsemen.” 27 And Moshe stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its place at daybreak, as the Mitsrites were fleeing into it, and יהוה overthrew the Mitsrites in the midst of the sea.

Page 16: Beshalach

Beshalach 4th Portion (Exo 14)

28 And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; not even one of them survived.29 But the children of Isra’el walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right and on their left.

Page 17: Beshalach

Beshalach 4th Portion (Exo 14)

30 Thus יהוה saved Isra’el that day out of the hand of the Mitsrites, and Isra’el saw the Mitsrites dead on the seashore. 31 And Isra’el saw the great work which יהוה had done in Mitsrayim, and the people feared יהוה, and believed יהוה and his servant Moshe.

1 Then Moshe and the children of Isra’el sang this song to יהוה, and they spoke, saying:“I will sing to יהוה,for highly exalted is he.The horse and its riderhe cast into the sea.

11 Who is like you among the powerful, O יהוה?Who is like you—great in set-apartness,awesome in praises, working wonders?12 “You stretched out your right hand, the earth swallowed them up.

13 In your loving kindness you ledthe people you have redeemed. In your strength you guided themto your set-apart dwelling.14 The peoples will hear and be afraid;anguish will take hold of the inhabitants of P’leshet.

Page 28: Beshalach

15 Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified,as for the mighty men of Mo’av, trembling will take hold of them;all the inhabitants of Kena‘an will melt away;

16 fear and dread will fall on them.By the greatness of your armthey will be as silent as a stone—until your people pass over, O יהוה,until the people, whom you have bought, pass over.

Page 30: Beshalach

17 You will bring them in and plant themon the mountain of your inheritance—in the place, O יהוה, which you have made for your own dwelling,in the sanctuary, O יהוה, which your hands have prepared.will reign יהוה“ 18for ever and ever.”

19 When Pharaoh’s horses came with his chariots and his horsemen into the sea, and יהוה brought the waters of the sea back upon them, but the children of Isra’el went on dry ground in the midst of the sea.

Page 32: Beshalach

Beshalach 4th Portion (Exo 15)

20 Then Miryam the prophetess, Aharon’s sister, took the timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dancing. 21 Miryam answered them:“Sing to יהוה,for he is highly exalted. The horse and its riderhe has thrown into the sea.”

Page 33: Beshalach

Beshalach 4th Portion (Exo 15)

22 Then Moshe brought Isra’el from the Sea of Suf and they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. (Therefore the name of it was called Marah.) 24 So the people grumbled against Moshe, saying, “What shall we drink?”

Page 34: Beshalach

Beshalach 4th Portion (Exo 15)

25 Then he cried out to יהוה, and יהוה showed him a tree, which, when he threw it into the water, made the water sweet. There he made a law and right-ruling for them, and there he tried them.

Page 35: Beshalach

Beshalach 4th Portion (Exo 15)

26 And he said, “If you diligently listen to the voice of יהוה your Elohim and do what is right in his eyes, and pay attention to his mitzvot and guard all his laws, all the diseases that I have brought on the Mitsrites I will not bring on you, for I am יהוה, who heals you.”

Page 36: Beshalach

Beshalach 5th Portion (Exo 15-16)

27 Then they came to Eilim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there by the water.1 They set out from Eilim and the whole congregation of the sons of Isra’el came to the Wilderness of Seen, which is between Eilim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Mitsrayim.

Page 37: Beshalach

Beshalach 5th Portion (Exo 16)

2 The whole congregation of the sons of Isra’el grumbled against Moshe and Aharon in the wilderness. 3 The sons of Isra’el said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of יהוה in the land of Mitsrayim, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to our fill, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to starve this entire assembly to death.”

Page 38: Beshalach

Beshalach 5th Portion (Exo 16)

4 Then יהוה said to Moshe, “Behold! I will rain down bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather what is needed for the day, so that I can test them, whether or not they will follow my Torah. 5 And it shall be on the sixth day, when they prepare that which they bring in, it shall be twice as much as they gather every day.”

Page 39: Beshalach

Beshalach 5th Portion (Exo 16)

6 Thereupon, Moshe and Aharon said to all the sons of Isra’el, “In the evening you shall know that יהוה has brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim,

Page 40: Beshalach

Beshalach 5th Portion (Exo 16)

7 and in the morning you shall see the esteem of יהוה when he hears your grumblings against יהוה. But of what significance are we, that you make the people grumble against us?”

Page 41: Beshalach

Beshalach 5th Portion (Exo 16)

8 Also Moshe said, “This will happen when יהוה gives you meat to eat in the evening and bread with which to become sated in the morning, for יהוה hears your grumblings which you are making the people complain against him. But of what significance are we? Your grumblings are not against us, but against יהוה.”

Page 42: Beshalach

Beshalach 5th Portion (Exo 16)

9 Then Moshe said to Aharon, “Say to all the congregation of the children of Isra’el, ‘Come near before יהוה, for he has heard your grumblings.’ ”10 And it came to pass when Aharon spoke to the whole community of the children of Isra’el, that they looked toward the wilderness and see, the esteem of יהוה appeared in the cloud.

Page 43: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

11 And יהוה spoke to Moshe, saying, 12 “I have heard the grumblings of the children of Isra’el. Speak to them, saying, ‘In the afternoon you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be satisfied with bread. And you shall know that I am יהוה your Elohim.’ ”

Page 44: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

13 It came to pass in the evening that the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 The layer of dew went up, and see, on the surface of the wilderness, a small, round substance as fine as frost on the ground.

Page 45: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

15 When the children of Isra’el saw it, they said to one another, “Man hu? [What is it?]” For they did not know what it was.And Moshe said to them, “It is the bread which יהוה has given you to eat. 16 This is the word that יהוה has commanded: ‘Gather of it each one according to his eating capacity, an ‘omer [two quarts] for each being, according to the number of beings, each one for those in his tent you shall take.

Page 46: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

17 And the children of Isra’el did so: they gathered, both the one who gathered much and the one who gathered little. 18 And they measured it with an ‘omer, and whoever gathered much did not have more, and whoever gathered little did not have less; each one according to his eating capacity, they gathered.19 And Moshe said to them, Let no one leave over any of it until morning.”

Page 47: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

20 But some men did not obey Moshe and left over some of it until morning, and it bred worms and became putrid. And Moshe became angry with them.21 They gathered it morning by morning, each one according to his eating capacity, and when the sun grew hot, it melted.

Page 48: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

22 It came to pass on the sixth day that they gathered a double portion of bread—two ‘omers for each one—and all the rulers of the congregation came and reported it to Moshe. 23 So he said to them, “That is what יהוה commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a rest day, a set-apart Shabbat to יהוה. Bake whatever you want to bake, and cook whatever you want to cook. And all the rest leave over to keep until morning.’ ”

Page 49: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

24 So they left it over until morning, as Moshe had commanded, and it did not become putrid, and not a worm was in it. 25 And Moshe said, “Eat it today, for today is a Shabbat to יהוה; today you will not find it in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day which is the Shabbat on it there will be none.”27 It came about that on the seventh day, some of the people went out to gather, but they they did not find any.

Page 50: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

said to Moshe, “How long shall you refuse to guard my יהוה 28mitzvot and my Torot? 29 See that יהוה has given you the Shabbat. Therefore, on the sixth day, he gives you bread for two days. Let each man stay in his place; let no man leave his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

Page 51: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

31 The people of Isra’el called the bread man. And it was like coriander seed, it was white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32 Moshe said, “This is the word which יהוה has commanded: ‘Fill an ‘omer with it, to be preserved for your generations, in order that they see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim.’ ”

Page 52: Beshalach

Beshalach 6th Portion (Exo 16)

33 And Moshe said to Aharon, “Take a pot and put an ‘omer of man in it, and set it down before יהוה, to be kept for your generations.”34 As יהוה had commanded Moshe, Aharon deposited it before the Witness to be preserved. 35 And the children of Isra’el ate the man for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the man until they came to the border of the land of Kena‘an.

36 (An ‘omer is one-tenth of an eifah [which is a bushel dry-measure].)

1 The whole congregation of the children of Isra’el journeyed from the Wilderness of Seen to their travels by the mandateof They camped at Refidim, and there was no water for the .יהוהpeople to drink. 2 So the people strove with Moshe and said, “Give us water that we may drink.”Moshe said to them, “Why do you strive with me? Why do you try ”?יהוה

Page 55: Beshalach

Beshalach 7th Portion (Exo 17)

3 But the people thirsted there for water, and they grumbled against Moshe, and said, “Why is it that you have brought us up out of Mitsrayim to make us and our children and our livestock die of thirst?”4 Moshe cried out to יהוה, “What shall I do for this people? Just a little longer and they shall stone me.”

Page 56: Beshalach

Beshalach 7th Portion (Exo 17)

5 And יהוה said to Moshe, “Go on before the people. And take with you some of the elders of Isra’el and take in your hand your rod with which you smote the river, and go. 6 See, I will stand there before you on the rock at Horev. And you shall smite the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people shall drink.” Moshe did so in the sight of the elders of Isra’el.

Page 57: Beshalach

Beshalach 7th Portion (Exo 17)

7 And he called the place Massah [testing] and M’rivah [quarreling] because of the strife of the children of Isra’el and because they tested יהוה, saying, “Is יהוה among us or not?”8 ‘Amalek came and fought with Isra’el at Refidim. 9 So Moshe said to Y’hoshua, “Choose men for us and go out and fight against ‘Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the rod of Elohim in my hand.”

Page 58: Beshalach

Beshalach 7th Portion (Exo 17)

10 So Y’hoshua did as Moshe had told him, and fought against ‘Amalek, and Moshe, Aharon and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 It came to pass that when Moshe held up his hand, Isra’el prevailed, and when he let his hand down, ‘Amalek prevailed.

Page 59: Beshalach

Beshalach 7th Portion (Exo 17)

12 Now Moshe’s hands were heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aharon and Hur held up his hands—one on one side, and one on the other—thus his hands were steady until sunset. 13 So Y’hoshua defeated ‘Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Page 60: Beshalach

Beshalach Maftir (Exo 17) said to Moshe, “Write this as a remembrance in the יהוה 14book, and recite it into Y’hoshua’s ears, that I shall completely obliterate the remembrance of ‘Amalek from beneath the heavens.”15 Then Moshe built an altar, and he called it יהוה Nissi [יהוה is my banner/miracle]. 16 And he said, “For there is a hand on the throne of Yah, that there will be a war for יהוה against ‘Amalek from generation to generation.”
