  • Investments in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) have been the most dynamic component of investments in recent years in Croatia. Croatia’s accession to the EU in 2013 provided a boost to local IT companies and the ICT sector as a whole.

Today, the Croatian ICT sector employs around 44,000 people and generates a revenue of around 3.5 billion EUR.1

Croatia has a long and rich history of high-tech innovations, all the way from Nikola Tesla (who is best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternative current (AC) electricity supply system) to Marin Soljačić (who invented efficient wireless non-radiative mid-range energy transfer). Many international companies have recognised the potential of Croatia and have established their innovation centres in Croatia, such as Ericsson, Microsoft and IBM. The ICT market in Croatia is constantly increasing and there is a significant growth in the number of startup businesses, and many new state-of-the-art data centres have been opened.

In 2013, the Croatian national cluster for the ICT industry was founded, providing a networking and cooperation platform for ICT companies.

Croatia has an educated, highly skilled and motivated labour force. Over the past 15 years, the Croatian ICT industry has become deregulated and modernised, which has turned it into an attractive location for ICT recruitment and staffing.

Since Croatia joined the EU, the ICT sector has become one of the most propulsive sectors of the Croatian economy, employing around 44,000 people, and continuously growing. Global investors actively cooperate with higher education institutions ensuring that the Croatian education system continues to tailor itself to the market’s needs.

Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing is the leading research and education institution in the Republic of Croatia in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Information and Communication Technologies. The Faculty enrols more than 3500 students at all study levels. Along with the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies, 5 specialist studies are regularly carried out at the Faculty. The specialist studies are designed to educate specialists in key areas for the economy: “Information Security”, “The Regulation of the Electronic Communications Market”, “Transformers”, “Railway Electrical Systems”, and “Project Management”.

Our students are encouraged to learn and acquire new practical knowledge and skills by participating in FER summer internship programme, which includes more than 200 Croatian companies. FER is one of the leading Croatian institutions regarding successful applying for the EU funds. Currently, 163 research projects are being carried out at FER, almost one third of which are international projects, mostly within the H2020 programme.

“FER systematically boosts student entrepreneurship through the Career Center’s student entrepreneurship programme. Thus, the Faculty is directly allowing student innovation ideas to enter the market through newly established start-ups. Job Fair, with almost 100 participating companies and more than 3000 student visitors is the largest career fair in Croatia. With this annual Fair, FER systematically and directly introduces students to the opportunities for employment and career development in Croatia and abroad, as well as connects employers with the best students of the University of Zagreb.”,Dean, Associate Professor Gordan Gledec, Ph.D.

Cooperation with the economy, encouragement of entrepreneurship and transfer of knowledge and technologies are fundamental indicators of the Faculty’s development. Perfect example for successful cooperation with partner companies is the master's (graduate) study programme in Automotive Computing and Communications (AutoCom).

Namely, the first initiative related to the AutoCom study programme started in 2016 with companies RT-RK Osijek and Rimac Automobili. Upon defining the basic structure of the AutoCom study programme, other companies were invited as well to participate in defining the study programme in January 2017. Four companies, namely Yazaki, AVL AST, Xylon and GlobalLogic responded to the proposal. They all take part in the study program as guest lecturers, comentors at master thesis, via offered internships, etc.

Encouraged by the success of AutoCom in Croatian which has started in 2017, FERIT decided to offer from year 2019 the AutoCom study programme in English as well, attracting best students, lecturers, experts and partner companies from all sides of the world! For details please see:

“Continuous collaboration with Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek is a great opportunity to offer our expertise in the field of electrical engineering and computer engineering in directing and employing young talents. By participating in the design and implementation of the Automotive Computing and Communications program we want to encourage young professionals to study these special areas of engineering. Rimac Development Office in Osijek has been established with the aim of encouraging talent retention Croatia, engaging them in the work on some of the most interesting projects in the industry. We believe that Osijek has great potential for further development as a technology hub”Mate Rimac Founder and CEO of Rimac Automobili

„From the very beginning of our cooperation, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek has proven to be a reliable partner. The cooperation has resulted in the implementation of the study programme in Automotive Computing and Communications, which, in our opinion, is a perfect example of the cooperation between the academic community and industry. Like the Faculty could have counted on us in defining the study programme, the Faculty and its students can count on our support in carrying out the study programme.“Zvonimir Kaprocki General Manager RT-RK Osijek

Croatia is an excellent location for investors who want to expand their business in Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe, as well as for start-up businesses. As the country has a population of only 4.089 million, Croatia’s market potential is relatively small in global terms, but Croatian consumers and companies have already proven that they have the ability to absorb new technologies very rapidly. In this respect, Croatia can serve as an excellent market for the development and application of new technologies in the field of the ICT sector. Many multinational companies, such as IBM, Microsoft, Ericsson, etc. confirmed Croatia as an ICT investment destination.
