The local restaurant is just a few blocksaway from the downtown Denton Square,at 600 N. Locust St. Modest and clean,the eatery has a small main dining room,a middle section of quiet booths, a barwith some table seating and a privateroom for meetings and parties.

We can’t leave out the patio, a morerecent addition to the business that,thanks to its choice location and sumptu-ous landscaping, is a fragrant and prettydining spot during the spring. Patronslove the patio on summer nights, too.

The Greenhouse serves appetizers –including a mouthwatering spinach arti-choke dip – daily specials for omnivoresand vegetarians (may we recommend the

parmesan tilapia? Or the spicy polentawith vegetarian chili?) and a revolvingmenu of specialty drinks. Oh, and if you’rea fan big burgers, there are several tochoose from. Sides are fresh and cool, anddesserts are reliable.

The prices are happily casual – a paircan leave paying less than $40 if they skipthe drinks — when one considers thegourmet dishes that are distinctly south-western.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondaysthrough Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. onFridays, noon to 11 p.m. on Saturdays andnoon to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

At one time, the downtown Denton

location of Jupiter House Coffee sold a T-shirt. On it was a circle of mere mortals,each one bowing (and we’re talking fore-head to the floor) to a huge decanter ofcoffee.

Seems Denton Record-Chronicle read-ers might be prone to go down on bendedknee for the locally owned java joint.

Here’s why:You’d be hard pressed to replace a staff

of laid-back, friendly baristas whoremember your name and your poison ifyou visit them during just a few shifts.

The coffee. Fair trade beans are groundfresh daily and each cup is brewed whileyou wait.

The coffeehouse keeps a staple menu, aplus for those who almost always buy asmall crazy cosmonaut with skim milkand no whipped cream, thanks. (Theperennial blends all have aeronauticalnames, too!)

But the adventurous coffeehound getsto experiment at the row of urns that aretopped off as soon as patrons tap them.

The downtown café. With bare brickwalls, a revolving show of local art andplenty of music, Jupiter House is a place

to be if you want to sample Denton’s cre-ative reflex while you sip.

And if you just want to finish that termpaper or check e-mail while listening tospotify? The tables are plentiful and thewifi is free.

Jupiter House Coffee keeps its mainlocation at 106 N. Locust St.

There is outdoor seating, but chancesare you’ll only want to sit there if you’re asmoker.

The second location is at 503 W.University Dr., where you can samplecandies and chocolate with your brew.Hours at both locations are 6 a.m. to mid-night daily.

Downtown Denton got a bit ofDowntown Grapevine last Februarywhen Weinberger’s Delicatessen openedits doors blocks off the Square. A yearlater, it is part of Denton’s Best.

“I was very pleasantly surprised; we arehumbled for sure,” said Mike Wing, man-ager of the sandwich shop about its men-tion in the annual city list.

Weinberger’s Delicatessen brought itsChicago-style deli style to Denton intro-ducing sandwiches and depending on theweather, patrons order the popularCalifornia Club, if it is cold outside or theReuben or Italian beef if they want tohave something to keep them away fromthe heat.

And since Weinberger’s is known to“want each sandwich you try to be thebest it can be,” they did their research and

already gave Denton fans their pick oflocal taste. Last year, the created theirshare of local brands – Last of theMojica’s, named after Dan Mojica, ownerof Dan Silverleaf debuted in September.Later Frenchy’s Dip made its debut nearThanksgiving – the sandwich was namedafter Frenchy’s owner, André J. During the past decade, Chef MattFairchild of Extreme Cuisine Catering canonly recall one client telling him he wasnot pleased with their order.

“He asked me to add more spinach,” hesaid explaining the ingredient his clientfelt was needed in one of their plates.

For the most part, Fairchild said,clients seem to be pretty pleased to trysomething new, even if at first it mightlook different.

“We push people into directions they

don’t think they want to go at first, butthen they are pleasantly surprised whenthey get there…,” Fairchild said aboutintroducing his worldwide cuisine to hiscustomers.

Fairchild and Chef Kathleen Francisstarted their catering business in Dentonin 1999. “I played with food even as ayoung school girl creating fudge andother recipes to win cooking contests orjust send with my sister on game day bustrips,” Francis wrote on her website, “Mywhole life, I’ve always enjoyed experi-menting with food tastes and textures.”

Years later, at their location in Argyle,the duo helps plan ladies luncheons, ele-gant corporate catering or a special housedinner.

Extreme Cuisine Catering also providesculinary arts classes where customers canlearn basic skills as well as advancedmethods of professional cooking. Add tothat, a win for the city’s best for the firsttime making everything just extremelygratifying.

Anthony partners withthe Texas Coalition for Animal Protectionin order to provide vaccinations for localpets and local shelters to help pets find anew home. At their recent event heldMarch 10, 85 vaccinations were given outin just two hours, in spite of the rainyweekend. And there were free hot dogsand drinks, so pet owners were prettyhappy.

Anthony is strict about ensuring alldogs stay current with the Texas vaccina-tions. Interested customers need to make

Dan’s Silverleaf isn’t a big venue, but it’samong the most important in Denton.

The local public house was the firstnight spot to move to Industrial Street, ashort city block once occupied by a feed

store and a mom-and-pop grocery mar-ket.

Dan’s originated on Elm Street, butshuttered when hard times hit. Co-ownerDan Mojica pulled himself up by thebootstraps, however, when a silent part-ner approached him and help re-locate at103 Industrial St.

They put bright, matte blue paint onthe outside walls, erected a curving barnear the Russell Street wall, then added anice-size stage and tech booth. Then

Mojica opened the taps, armed a friendlybar staff with bottle openers andcorkscrews and started booking some ofthe best Red Dirt, Texas and Americanamusic acts into his club.

The crowds came for the music, boughtdrinks and kept coming. Mojica stayedfriendly and helped form the IndustrialStreet Guild, an association for the themerchant neighbors who joined him onthe block – Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Rooster’sRoadhouse and Seniors In Motion.

These days, you can still catch Asleep atthe Wheel, Brave Combo and up-an-com-ers like Hares on the Mountain. Bands areproudly recording live albums at Dan’s – ifyou haven’t sampled The Boxcar BanditsLive at Dan’s, you should. On the nightswhen the stage is still, patrons can catch agame and some gossip.

Doors open at about 4 p.m. and close at2 a.m. most days.
