Cat Snapp’s I Can’t Really Tell You About It, made of
paper, ink and thread, is part of her exhibit at the
Center for the Visual Arts
Spineless wonders
Denton artist CatSnapp uses carefuldetails to suggest a
splendid messiness in “SmallBreaths,” an exhibit of herrecent works, at the Centerfor the Visual Arts.
Artist books seem to takepride in the liberties theytake with the very notion of abook. For the inveterate read-er, a book is an organized col-lection of paper (can’t theyplease bottle that smell?),glue, thread and bindingboard. For book buffs, it’s astretch to even compare thedata on an e-reader to a book.
Artist books use tradition-al bookmaking materials:paper, boards, binding, inkand text. Good book artists, who can turn this functionalcraft into a decorative object, put all that into a blender.
So Snapp’s paper — cut inpell-mell, jigsaw chunks andprinted with neat graphics —is ever so orderly even as itdefies sequence, chronologyand plot. That stuff is the
work of a reader — well, theviewer. Snapp uses smartlydyed fabrics to cover boxes.Once opened, they revealstiff, clean paper — the thrillof a new story! — with fussylines stitched in teensy tracks.
Color goes where it will(though Snapp probablyworks all that out, too), andtextures lurk and show off atthe same time.
Make what you will of themeaning behind the exhibit’stitle. Small breaths canmean fear, exertion or deli-cious and fleeting momentswhere life happens at itsmost fearless and fevered. Alot can happen in smallbreaths — children are bornand people die in the spaceof one flex of the lungs.
Snapp simply puts allthese ideas into a contextthat invites the viewer tothink, feel and carry on withthe themes that are inten-tionally threaded and gath-ered in her artist books.

Denton’s D. Smiley joins Friday’s lineup at Hailey’s Club.
D. Smiley isn’t one to lethis heels get dusty —for this Denton hip-hop
artist, the verses are hottestwhen the artist is in motion, booking gigs and charmingaudiences like a snake in abasket.
D. Smiley fits a set into theFriday night gig at Hailey’sClub with beefy beats andtight rhymes. The artist has alittle in common with Devin
the Dude. He likes herb andloves the ladies. Fortunatelyfor listeners, D. Smiley doesn’trap stupid or juvenile whenthe air is — how should we saythis? — thick. There is thatrelaxed, lub-dub of a beatnudging the artist through hisverses and choruses.
The local artist performs ona busy bill this weekend, buthe doesn’t hustle party tracks.Smiley writes about the grindof writing, the persistence ofconflict among the hip-hopcommunity (and the world in
general). Push D. Smiley past the
point of no return, and he’llsort you out with his flow, nothis fists.
Sounds like: That part atthe party when the amateurshave left or passed out and thereal stuff goes down.
Details: Doors open 9 p.m.Friday at Hailey’s Club, 122 W.Mulberry St. D-Hark head-lines, with performances byTiger, Ricky Blaine, A Partyand Sam Cason. Cover is $5for ages 21 and older, $10 forthose younger than 21.

OPENING TUESDAYThe Amazing Spider-Man A brief-
case containing clues sets the young
Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) on the
trail of his parents — or at least the
answers about their disappearance.
Peter also grapples with the trials of
romance. His high school crush, Gwen
Stacy (Emma Stone), seems receptive
to Peter’s affections — but Peter’s
secret identity piques the dogged
interest of Gwen’s law enforcement
pop. Marc Webb directs this feast for
the eyes. Buildings collapse, a bridge
and all the cars on it are swept up in a
fire, and Spider-Man bobs and
weaves his way through the metropo-
lis on the sticky filigrees of his magic
webs. Rated PG-13, 90 minutes. —

NOW PLAYINGAbraham Lincoln: VampireHunter After watching a vampire
dispatch his mother, Abe Lincoln
grows up and commits to ridding the
New World of the fanged vermin who
are fighting for control of the
colonies. Much butt-kicking, biting
and blood spattering ensues.
Benjamin Walker (Kinsey) plays the
put-upon president who has to sling
an ax against vampires while trying
to preserve the Union. Mary Elizabeth
Winstead is Mary Todd, and Rufus
Sewell finally lands a role that can
fully employ his creep factor. Rated

riage her destiny, that is. Meet
Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly
Macdonald), an expert archer known
for her defiance and her explosion of
screaming red curls. Neither pleases
her father, King Fergus (voiced by the
incomparable Billy Connolly), or her
mum, Queen Elinor (Emma Thomp-
son). While the queen is looking to
land a good young man for her
daughter, Merida is looking for a spell
that will change her destiny. Rated
PG, 93 minutes. — L.B.
Men in Black 3 () Josh Brolin
impersonating the young Tommy Lee
Jones is worth the price of admission
to Men in Black 3. Dry, drawling,
deadpan — he nails the flinty Texan
in this sentimental sequel to the sci-
fi comedies about secret agents in
black suits who save the world from
aliens. An alien serial killer (Jemaine
Clement) has traveled back in time to
save the arm that Agent K shot off in
1969, and Agent J (Will Smith) must
go back and save his future partner.

about his father and an automaton. Martin Scorsese directed the film, based on the book The Invention of Hugo
Cabret by Brian Selznick. Rated PG, 126 minutes. The night starts with a free marshmallow roast and crafts at 8 p.m. in the
park, at 321 E. McKinney St. The movie rolls on a giant screen at 9 p.m. Bring your blankets and chairs. Cheap concessions
will be available. For more information, call 940-349-7275.

in Smith’s usually capable hands.

The docu-mentary BillW., by first-time filmmak-ers Kevin Hanlon and DanCarracino, explores the manwho has helped countlessaddicts overcome their demons— and keep them at bay —since 1935.
The documentary screenedin Denton during Thin LineFilm Fest last February, andnow, the historic Texas Theatrein Oak Cliff in Dallas is screen-ing the documentary at 6:30p.m. today.
Bill W. makes no bonesabout AA’s founding father’sreliance on God to stick to the12 steps to sobriety. The direc-tors use an exhaustive amountof archival material in themovie, but present-day AAadherents drive home Wilson’sessential message: A personalone is powerless to overcomeaddiction and to stay clean. They need something beyondthemselves and a communityof recovering addicts.

People Like Us covers its bases. Thenew drama-comedy-characterstudy wants to hit so many but-
tons, it simply hits them all.Somehow, People Like Us eventually
breaks down defenses and becomes atouching portrait of a fractured modernfamily struggling to find its roots. Buttone and rhythm fluctuate from scene toscene and even within scenes. Plus, thefilm never establishes what exactly itsaims are. And it suffers from far toomany maudlin and mawkish sequences,
spotty cinematography and some chop-py, flip-flop editing.
Yet despite its many deficiencies, thefilm’s greatest drawback, and the biggesthindrance to its authenticity, is theimplausibility of the central character’snarrative-driving action.
Chris Pine plays slick, fast-talkingSam. When summoned to his Californiachildhood home because his one-timerecord-producing father has died, hereluctantly goes with his girlfriend,Hannah (Olivia Wilde). Once there, hismother, Lillian (Michelle Pfeiffer), doesnot seem overjoyed to have him.
The family lawyer (Philip Baker Hall)secretly gives Sam his father’s shavingkit, filled with money and a note statingwhere Sam should deliver it. Sam learnshis father had another family, one hedeserted when his half-sister, Frankie(Elizabeth Banks), was a child. Now, sheworks as a bartender and struggles toraise her rebellious son, Josh (MichaelHall D’Addario).
But instead of handing over themoney, Sam ingratiates himself withFrankie and Josh, giving them both falseimpressions, while also making us won-der what he is up to, a question never
fully answered. Obviously, Frankiebelieves Sam has romantic intentions, and it certainly seems that way.
As a result, an outsider might be leftwondering what Sam’s procrastinationsaccomplish other than giving directorand co-writer Alex Kurtzman’s semi-autobiographical screenplay time torender a series of mildly amusing, char-acter-defining scenes. The film’s great-est strengths lie in its humor and itsingratiating bonhomie.
In addition, Sam, Frankie and Joshare all likable characters, even if theactors must work overtime to applytheir skills to the inconsistent material.Yet the continuous contrivances make itdifficult to embrace the film’s inevitableresolution.
So, just enjoy the movie, but ignore itsdrawbacks.

SwingshiftDenton Community Theatrefires up ‘Jukebox’ to bringback that big-band soundBy Lucinda BreedingFeatures Editor
Denton Community Theatre is ready for every-one from Boy Scouts to military veterans tojump, jive and wail.
This year’s installment of the summer Encore serieswill Lindy hop, jitterbug and sway in the moonlight inG.I. Jukebox: The 1940s Stage Door Canteen.
And why not head into the Fourth of July with thesongs that sent American sons and daughters to war inthe 1940s?
The cast and crewsaid they expect thebenefit to bring a lotof older veterans tothe theater.
The music of the1940s, with power-house band leadersGlenn Miller andTex Beneke, was allabout fierce passionand vision. Itinspired the flashydances that definedswing as well as aromantic spirit thatremains unique toAmerican. And as Navy ships and infantry truckshauled off fresh-faced young G.I. men to stem the tideof tyranny moving across Europe, the music of the1940s was equal parts triumphant and celebratory.
“I’m always surprised at how in any group of men,how many of them have been in the service,” musicaldirector Rick Buntain said after rehearsals Tuesday atthe Campus Theatre.
“And women, too,” said director Theresa Buntain. “Exactly. Women, too,” he said. “But with older men
especially, it’s amazing to realize how military servicehas been part of their lives. Like at church aroundVeterans Day or Memorial Day, when they ask all themen who have been in the military to stand, it’s a big

The show by Rick Lewis is amusical revue tucked betweenscenes of four performerspreparing for a United ServiceOrganizations tour duringWorld War II. Lewis arrangedAmerican pop standards —such as “I’ll Be Seeing You,”“This Is My Country,” “Don’tFence Me In” and “JukeboxSaturday Night” — for fourvoices. As for the swinging andoccasionally sentimental soundthat packed 1940s dance halls,Lewis kept it very much intact.
The cast includes Dentonfavorite Jennifer Calfee, whomakes her fifth appearance inthe company’s summer fund-raisers, and several newcomersto the Denton stage — PamLeck, Dave Parsons and Den-ton native Bruce McKinley.Bryan Patrick, a core memberof Fight Boy Theatre, takesanother turn on the Campusstage as the stage managercoordinating the rehearsal andperformance of the 1940s USOshow.
The cast members said theyknew they accepted a challeng-ing musical assignment wheneach accepted the invitation toperform.
“Unless you listen to a lot ofjazz in your free time, thismusic takes some getting usedto,” said McKinley, whosefather led an a cappella choir atthe University of North Texas.“You have to listen. The har-monies aren’t easy. Sometimes,it’s good to stand in a semicircleand sing so you can really lis-ten.”

monies that prevailed duringthe age of vocal groups — likethe Andrews Sisters, whosestandards are in the show —can confound. Calfee agreed.
“This is going to sound coun-terintuitive, but sometimes, notlistening is good,” she said.“There are moments when youjust need to hear what you’resupposed to be singing in yourhead and block everyone else
out.”Theresa Buntain gave the
cast some license to developcharacters the audience willrecognize.
“The script calls for Man 1,Man 2 and Woman 1 andWoman 2,” she said. “What’sneat is that all of them chose agrandparent’s name for theircharacters.”
Lewis’ script is about fourformer military officers whohave gone on to become
Hollywood royalty. They planthe USO show for outboundsoldiers.
While the songs aren’t origi-nal, they are threaded throughthe story as emotional markers. There’s the excitement of ship-ping out for the first voyage, thedisillusionment of being thelowest in the ranks. There aresporting riffs on the mischiefthat is inevitable when youngmen train, dine and bunktogether.
The grief of being away fromloved ones — whether sungfrom the perspective of the sol-dier or the sweetheart at home— comes up again and again aslyrics paint pictures of lovedones together again, gazing atthe moon.
“Back then, there was noInternet, no e-mail, no Skype,”said Leck. “When you thinkabout it, back then, when youlooked up at the moon, youknew you were under the samemoon as that soldier —whether they were in Belgiumor Switzerland.”
