Best practices: Examples from the Implementation
of the European Charter for Researchers and The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment
of researchers for an ITN project

ITN 2015 Info-Day: "A focus on implementation"
Brussels
18 December 2015
ITN 2015 Info-Day 2
The CLOUD project at CERN
Study atmospheric new particle
formation processes and
aerosol-cloud-climate interactions
Role of Galactic Cosmic Rays
for aerosols and climate.
ITN 2015 Info-Day 3
CLOUD and the ITN project scheme – a perfect fit
CLOUD-ITN (2008-2012)
CLOUD-TRAIN (2012-2016)
ITN fellows from 10 institutions
come together at CERN to
conduct experiments together
at the unique CLOUD aerosol
chamber
CLOUD-ITN and CLOUD-TRAIN
ITN 2015 Info-Day 4
CLOUD-TRAIN
Networking:
CLOUD experiment at CERN as focal point of the Network
excellent Research Environment at CERN…
Excellent training by fixed daily meetings (“3 o’clock meeting”)
Superb team building, working very close together, 24/7!
Skype conferences, cross-institutional analysis working groups
Numerous other network activities, e.g. data workshops
Cooperation of partners beyond CLOUD-TRAIN:
e.g. complementary atmospheric measurements at Jungfraujoch
Interaction with private sector: Tofwerk, Ionicon, TSI, Airmodus,
Aerodyne, all world-leading manufacturers of instrumentation...
ITN 2015 Info-Day 5
Implementation of
European Charter for Researchers
Recruitment
All recruitment procedures were conducted according to the Code of Conduct for the
Recruitment of the Researchers.
Advertisements of the available positions were made at the EURAXESS portal and at
the other facilities and platforms.
Selection procedure was transparent and understandable for all applicants. All of the
partners consulted the project management team on questions of the eligibility criteria
of the candidates. Variations in the chronological order of CVs were not penalised.
Gender balance
CLOUD-ITN: 14 recruited researchers: 5 female, 9 male, (36%)
CLOUD-TRAIN: 15 recruited researchers: 8 female, 7 male, (53%)
Co-authorship
Authorship and co-authorship rules for scientific papers are clearly defined in the CLOUD
constitution. The authorship of the scientific publications is discussed within the entire
CLOUD collaboration during special paper planning sessions at every collaboration
meeting. The list of planned papers is updated and proposals for new papers are added
during the collaboration meetings while all the potential co-authors are present. First
authors and “core author teams”, time lines, journal choices, etc. are defined and
discussed for each paper. The Paper Committee is established for overseeing the
paper writing, the internal review, editing and submission process. The paper committee
helps to check for consistency among the papers and checks that paper contents do
not overlap.
ITN 2015 Info-Day 6
Implementation of
European Charter for Researchers
Professional responsibility, Accountability, Good Practice in Research
Sessions on Good Scientific Practice during summer schools.
Strict scrutiny with measurements and interpretation.
Repeatability and redundancy of measurements.
Very open discussions during 3 o'clock meetings
and data workshops.
Relation with supervisors
A Research and Training Plan (and CDP) is developed by the young researchers
together with their supervisors.
Frequent, minuted meetings with the supervisor and PhD Advisory Committee
are part of the contractual obligations.
Group meetings and seminars are conducted regularly.
Oliver Bischof (associated partner) acts as "ombudsperson"
in case of disputes, problems, complaints or appeals.
Participation in decision-making bodies
2 ESRs (elected by the ESRs) participate in the decision-making bodies
(Supervisory Board, Paper Committee)
"Townhall meeting"

CLOUD produced ~40 papers within the last 5 years. Several ESRs finished their PhD
with 2 first author and >15 co-author papers.
