As many as 1 in 3 women suffer from some form of venous disease. Symptoms could include swelling, heaviness, cramping, pain, or ulcers that make everyday activities such as walking difficult. Led by Dr. Joseph Ricotta, one of the top vascular surgeons in the nation, our staff of renowned, board-certified physicians understands the intricacies of the vascular system. Offering a full spectrum of vascular and endovascular services, we provide on-site evaluations and minimally invasive treatment options.

My Best ListDiscover Sewing – During the holidays, I took a sewing class. It had been years since I sat down at a sewing machine, but I passed by Discover Sewing in Sandy Springs several times and thought, “I really want to re-learn how to sew.” I attended a class about sewing pajama pants, which took place on two Saturdays and was three hours long. The instructor, Linda, was awesome, and I found the sewing itself to be very therapeutic and fun. Now I am buying my own sewing machine and plan to take more classes and tackle new projects.

Mark Edge Jewelry – I love my Mark Edge Coin necklace. It goes with everything! Mark Edge is a local jewelry designer who has amazing pieces at many Atlanta boutiques. His jewelry blends modern style with vintage elements, such as old coins and other reclaimed materials. If you don’t know his work, check out Mark Edge Jewelry on Facebook. You won’t be disappointed.

Smyrna Bicycles – With spring almost here and warm weather just around the corner, I highly recommend finding a friend and renting a tandem bike from this awesome bike shop. It is strategically located adjacent to the top of the Silver Comet Trail, so you can just hop on and go! The guys who work in the store are great, and they have a nice selection of new bikes and all types of rentals.

from the editorA Beautiful Life

This month’s issue is Best Self’s “Beauty Issue,” which means, well, anything. On a practical level, the beauty issue means that you can turn to p. 35 and fi nd tips about preserving smooth skin, maintaining good posture and fi nding your best hair color. But beauty, of course, can mean so much more than that.

Beauty can mean spending more time with your family and friends. Beauty shows up in the hard work people do for charities and organizations all throughout the city. Beauty doesn’t even have to be about us at all – we call art, music and nature “beautiful” every day.

When faced with all these options, I can only conclude that beauty is whatever we make it. So this month, think about what makes you feel happy, confi dent, loved and connected. Expand your defi nition of beauty to include those things, above and beyond what the commercials tell you. After all, author Sam Levenson had it right when he wrote, “For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.” A monthly facial and a new lipstick certainly never hurt – just don’t stop there when building the beautiful life you deserve.

Happy reading!

What healthy message do you most want to share?

Going to the dentist is not just about your teeth. We’re another part of the medical team – we’ll take people’s blood pressures, and when we take X-rays, we’re looking at the jaws for cancers. I want to get people healthy overall, and then we can talk about getting things pretty.

How does dental care help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond feel their best?

Teeth get very brittle as we get older, and it gets harder to whiten them. Patients seek us out because they want to look younger, and cosmetic dentistry can take 10 to 15 years off your face.

What is a common misconception about cosmetic dentistry?

That it’s going to hurt or be expensive. Modern cosmetic dentistry can be done effortlessly, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a beautiful smile.

What causes does Atlanta Smiles and Wellness support?

I started the Atlanta Smiles Foundation in 2008 to provide pro bono dentistry and facial reconstruction to survivors of domestic abuse.

What healthy message do you most want to share?

Volunteering not only feels good, but there are several additional rewards. Volunteers learn new skills, form meaningful relationships, feel connected to the community, resolve confl ict better and experience increased empathy. At Camp Horizon, we provide year-round programs to children in foster care from ages 8 to 23. Volunteering with us is a great experience for the kids, but it’s also life changing for our volunteers.

How does volunteering at Camp Horizon help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond?

It defi nitely helps keep me young! Our volunteers range in age from about 18 or 19 all the way up to 70s. We all get to be kids ourselves a little bit, which is really fun.

What volunteer opportunites are available at Camp Horizon?

Our greatest need is for counselors at summer camp, an intensive one-week program. Volunteers can also help with our spring and fall weekend retreats, our annual family reunion party and monthly activities like rock climbing and roller-skating throughout the year.

What healthy message do you most want to share?

In this day and age, cosmetic surgery falls into the same basket as all the other things we use to look our best, whether it’s fi tness, hair color or makeup.

How does cosmetic surgery help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond feel their best?

Our true age is on the inside, but through time, Mother Nature plays games with us. The exciting thing I do is roll back the clock a little bit for people and match up the outside with the inside.

What is a common misconception about cosmetic surgery?

That it’s going to look unnatural. In my practice, my goal is that no one knows my patients have had anything done. They just look at them and say, “Wow, you look fantastic.”

What causes does the Maloney Center support?

The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children is our biggest initiative. It just breaks your heart when you see moms and little kids that are on the street and don’t have anything. We have so much, so it’s our obligation to share.

What healthy message do you most want to share?

If you’re really confi dent with who you are, it doesn’t matter what hair style you wear.

How does great hair help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond feel their best?

Who doesn’t love going to a hair salon, a girl or a guy, and feeling really great about themselves? At Bob Steele Salon, we are really great at helping each individual fi nd the best self that they can be and enhancing their natural beauty through cut, color, extensions and makeup services.

What is a common misconception people have about high-end salons?

That the stylist is just going to tell you what they think you should look like or feel like, but really what we’re doing is getting to the essence of who you are and helping you become better at that.

What is your favorite hairstyle you’ve ever worn?

The one I’m representing today! It’s a throwback to many years ago in my early 20s when I did the short pixie. I’m really enjoying it right now – it’s so easy and so fun.

What healthy message do you most want to share?

That medical doctors, chiropractors and physiotherapists can work together under one roof. At Total HealthCare, all our specialists work as one team with one goal in mind, and that is to effectively – and non-surgically – relieve stubborn chronic joint or spine pain.

How does joint care help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond feel their best?

When someone gets back to running, playing soccer, playing tennis or simply walking upstairs, it gives them their life back.

What is your ultimate goal in doing this work?

Pain is a big de-motivator and depressor in one’s life. I want to help people get back to the productive lives they want to live.

What is a common client response when they see the benefi ts of your care?

Many of the patients that come to us do so as a last resort before an invasive surgery. Once we’ve helped them, they often say things like, “This changed my life,” and “I had forgotten what it’s like to be pain free.”

What healthy message do you most want to share?

Molly: Livi Rae Lingerie specializes in bra fi t for bust health. We fi t women from all walks of life, all shapes and sizes, and we also help clients that have had mastectomies and lumpectomies due to breast cancer.

How do your services help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond feel their best?

Cynthia: When I hit 43, it started to sink in that my body was changing. Women come in that are in that situation too, and we let them know that they’re beautiful. Everybody goes through this, and we can relate.

Does self-esteem affect the bra-fi tting process?

Molly: It does. We’ve seen young girls that are concerned with underdeveloped breasts or they’re fuller than most girls in their class. We pride ourselves in building self-esteem. We call it “giving the gift of lift” because we lift your spirits and your breasts.

What do you love most about the work you do?

Cynthia: We really are a no-judgment zone. We help everybody, whether you’re a transgender man, a woman who’s pregnant or a child that’s developed due to hormones or obesity. We don’t turn you away.

What healthy message do you most want to share?

When it comes to getting healthy, people put so much pressure on themselves and set expectations so high. I just want people to focus on moving and being active.

How does fi tness help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond feel their best?

You can get started at any age! You just have to work out smarter, not harder. Try things that are low impact, like water aerobics, dancing or riding bikes and walking on the BeltLine.

What role does food play in overall health and fi tness?

You have to eat good, real foods. I tell people, “Whatever is working for you, go with it. But is it something you can do for the rest of your life?” Can you drink shakes for the rest of your life? I’m going to go with “no.” It’s about a lifestyle and learning to eat in moderation.

What is your favorite workout?

Any workout I can do in 30 minutes – I’m in and out three times a week and then call it a day.

regional options like Mountain High Outfitters and the Virginia-based jewelry boutique Lou Lou Accessories. The best part is the market’s location; it is in easy walking distance of many residences, businesses and the BeltLine.

Atlanta Endocrine Associates

Why do I still have symptoms of low thyroid, even though I take thyroid medication?

Many patients experience symptoms of hypothyroidism like weight gain, depression and dry skin despite taking medication. This can occur when the body has difficulty converting synthetic thyroid medication, which contains an inactive hormone, to an active form. Changing the brand of medication or using a natural version can provide improved symptom relief.

Q

aPatrick Oliver Maher, MDNorth Fulton Anesthesia

I have to go under general anesthesia for a procedure. Is there anything I can do to make sure I stay safe?

New research found that the most frequent malpractice claims are related to teeth damage, death and nerve damage. To lower risks, patients should develop preoperative questions for their doctor. For example, ask about eating, drinking and taking medications or supplements before surgery. Patients should also provide their doctor with family medical history, allergy information and a list of medications, vitamins and supplements they take.

specialists only operate around the eyes, allowing them to concentrate on the nuances and intricacies of this very sensitive and complicated area. In terms of training, I had four years of medical school, an internship and a residency, and I completed advanced training in Oculoplastic Surgery at Duke Medical Center.

A Film for EveryoneThe Atlanta Film Festival runs from March 20 to 29, screening quality independent films for the 39th year. Many of this year’s directors focus on serious topics, such as in Danielle Beverly’s “Old South,” which explores racial tensions between a white fraternity in Athens, Georgia and a traditionally black neighborhood, or Nathalie Cools’ “Trans: A Documentary about Transboys,” delving into complex issues of gender identity. Still other directors are bringing comedies, musical programming and more to the screen. With a $50 MovieHopper pass, you can attend any of the

festival’s regular screenings, or you can purchase $10 general admission tickets for specific shows.

bestfunCreativity For the Big Kids

Who says only kids get to play with the latest technology? Not Museum of Design Atlanta, that’s for sure. MODA welcomes “students” of every age to join in their new workshops and test their hands at animation, 3D design, LEGO robotics and more.

Whether it’s printing real-life versions of Minecraft ice palaces or LEGO electronic circuits, kids ages 8 to 15 can create those and more at current MODA workshops. For $40 on the afternoon of March 21, adults can join in the fun with their children to design and print their own Mockingjay pins from “The Hunger Games” franchise. You’ll learn the basics of 3D design software, how to manipulate basic shapes and symbols, the materials and processes used in 3D printing, and the pins will be printed right from the museum’s own 3D printer.

Even if you don’t have a kid in tow, you can explore the intrigue of 3D printing and design with a group of friends or co-workers. Sign up for ongoing adult workshops teaching you how to create spaceship models, snowflakes and even bracelets with this 3D technology, or reserve a private class for yourself and your friends. It’s never too late to learn something new, and MODA classes like these are the perfect place to do it.

If you haven’t been to the ballet in a while, let this show get you back to the theater. Atlanta Ballet’s “Camino Real,” choreographed by Helen Pickett, makes its world premiere at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on March 20. The show is inspired by Tennessee Williams’ play, and the story comes from the perspective of Kilroy, a patriotic WWII-era character. In 75 minutes, the ballet introduces fictional and historical figures, such as Esmeralda from “Hunchback of Notre Dame” and the infamous 18th century Casanova. Pickett herself shares insight into the story and the characters on the Atlanta Ballet’s website, so you can learn their full backstory before it comes to life on stage.

INGREDIENTS:

2 large apples, chopped

1 cup raw almonds

1 cup raw walnuts

1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut

2 tbsp coconut palm sugar

1 tbsp cinnamon

½ tsp sea salt

3 eggs

1 tbsp vanilla extract

1 tbsp butter, melted

METHOD:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a food processor, blend the apples, almonds, walnuts, coconut, coconut palm sugar, cinnamon and salt until the apples and nuts are chopped into small pieces.

In a medium bowl, combine the eggs, vanilla and butter. Add the nut/apple

mixture to the bowl and stir well. Use a tablespoon to scoop the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet and flatten just slightly with your hand to shape. This should yield about 30 bites.

Bake for about 30 minutes, or until lightly browned along the edges.

SEASONAL SPOTLIGHT: Farm-Fresh EggsThough you may not realize it, eggs are a seasonal food. During the short days of winter, chickens lay fewer eggs or stop altogether for a few weeks. Commercial farms cheat this natural rhythm by turning lights on in their chicken coops to create long, artificial days and boost egg production all year, but many smaller, family farms know their flocks need that healthy break. When springtime rolls around and the days get longer, local egg production naturally increases again. It’s time to get yourself some farm-fresh eggs!

Basic prep: Scrambled or sunny-side up, the rich color and taste of pastured eggs will make them the best you’ve ever tried.

Step it up: Eggs can vary widely in size – some even surprise you with a double yolk! Adjust accordingly for your favorite baking recipes.

Find it: For a closer look at the process, attend The Wylde Center’s Urban Coop Tour on March 28 and 29. You’ll see a variety of backyard flocks and chat with homeowners about keeping chickens in the city. Tickets are $20 in advance and available at wyldecenter.org/urban-coop-tour.

Intimidation is not a word or a concept that entrepreneur Molly Mathis fi nds daunting. On the contrary, intimidation is what keeps Mathis in business. Mathis is the mastermind behind Mojo Active Adventures, a

boutique adventure travel company that helps women change their feelings of intimidation about fi tness, travel, friendship – you name it – to feelings of empowerment. Mojo Active Adventures achieves that empowerment through outdoor excursions and fi tness-focused trips for the female adventure seeker. “We take the intimidation factor out of the equation by off ering a safe, supportive and fun environment in which to sample new outdoor activities,” Mathis says.

rough her business model, explorers embark on personalized trips organized by Mathis herself. “I personally plan each trip to ensure it meets our extremely high standards. By working closely

with experts in each destination, we leverage local knowledge to ensure our guests have special access to the best activities.” With Mathis’ attention to detail, extensive knowledge in the fi eld and her own empowered attitude, each trip is better than the last. Mojo Adventure participants have gone rappelling, white-water rafting, zip lining and more across the globe.

Before you say, “I could never do something like that,” consider that Mathis was once in your very shoes. She spent years working a regular 9-to-5 as an advertising executive. When she stepped away from the advertising world to have her two kids, Mathis experienced the common desire to lose the weight that hangs around after pregnancy. at was when something clicked. Instead of being intimidated at the thought of hitting the gym, Mathis dove in headfi rst. She explains, “I started working out with a trainer, began incorporating more strength work and variety

agility coaching and youth conditioning. She also teaches indoor cycling at Flywheel Sports. Now she guides other women to finding their own fitness activities that excite and inspire them. According to Mathis, Mojo Active Adventures seeks “active adult women who have a basic level of fitness and have a desire to get off the treadmill and try new things.” So there’s no prior experience needed to try an adventurous trip like this – all you need is the guts to do it.

When organizing her trips, Mathis focuses on destinations that truly go off of the beaten path. She says, “We look for that perfect blend of activities that offer a unique combination of physical and mental challenges with plenty of ‘wow’ factor.” Trips planned for 2015 include San Juan, Puerto Rico as well as Colorado Springs, Colorado. Each trip aims to take wanderers on explorations they’ve never experienced before. “e caving adventure in Puerto Rico, for example, is ranked among National Geographic’s Top 50 Journeys of a Lifetime. You simply have to take a ride into the rainforest to get to something like that,” Mathis asserts. In essence, it’s that first-time, exhilarating experience trip after trip that helps the Mojo Adventure participants stay excited about fitness. But of course, it’s not just the thrills that make Mojo tours a must-have experience; it’s equally about taking time to relax. “ese trips are not about roughing it,” Mathis assures. “We stay at nice places and enjoy well-earned rewards like spa services and wine tastings.” e cost, which varies based on each trip’s length and locale, covers all those extras up front to ensure a fun time for everyone. Mathis has her sights set on Iceland for 2016, but next on the horizon for Mojo Active Adventures is helping expand their participants’ fitness opportunities when the trips are over. “We are looking into enhancing some of our partnerships with area retailers and outfitters by offering ‘Mini-Mojo’ events in and around the Atlanta area. If someone learns, for example, that they really enjoy stand-up paddleboarding on a full-length trip, they have a path to explore that further when they get back home.”

And that home portion is key since, of course, every workout can’t be a trip through the rainforest. Mathis knows that an exciting, healthy getaway is only the beginning of a lifestyle of fitness, which she herself maintains. “When it comes to working out, I’m always mixing things up to keep it fun and get the best results.” And while she doesn’t stick to a diet regimen, Mathis does say that it’s important to be cognizant of what’s fueling your body. “I do believe in keeping it simple with basic, whole foods. As a trainer, I tell clients that 80 percent of success has to do with what you put in your mouth. Don’t get me wrong, though – I’m all about healthy indulgences too.”

When asked how she stays motivated, Mathis explains, “Honestly, it’s a part of who I am. For sure, there are days when I’m feeling less than motivated or struggling to make it happen. However, find activities you love to do, surround yourself with others who share your interests and encourage you, and just make it a non-negotiable part of your day.”

Another non-negotiable for Mathis: appreciating how far she’s come and what she’s built. Mathis acknowledges, “Starting this business has honestly been more fun than I could have imagined. To have the opportunity to meet so many incredible women, have an impact on their overall well-being and help create lasting memories and experiences is an unbelievable feeling.” And those positive feelings are what make Molly Mathis and Mojo Active Adventures so successful; they spill over and give other women confidence, support and a whole lot of mojo.

Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals Foundation Support your skin care routine with this skin-friendly foundation. Aura Hair & Makeup’s

Erin Jubril says, “This product is amazing! It firms, has CoQ10 to repair, hyaluronic acid for hydration and Aloe vera to calm.” aurahm.com

A key component to freshening your face is exfoliation. Judy Van Heiningen from Roswell’s Facelogic Spa says, “Most people don’t realize that at any given time you have about 30 layers of dead skin cells on your face. Yuck! They exacerbate your wrinkles, make your skin look dull

and absorb all the great ingredients of your expensive moisturizers and serums.” She explains, “At 20 years old, nature takes care of exfoliating our skin every three weeks or so. But as we

age, nature slows down the exfoliation process. So your best bet is to exfoliate your skin with a peel, microdermabrasion or enzyme mask.” facelogicspa.com/roswell

Stephanie Crystal from Joseph & Friends Lifestyle Salon & Spa elaborates, “Microdermabrasion instruments spray tiny crystals onto the skin, breaking up and removing the uneven outer layer

of dead skin cells. This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discoloration, sun damage and stretch marks.” Depending on where you go, the cost may range from about

$50 to $200. josephandfriends.com

New Youth Skin Care Glycosylation occurs when a glucose molecule abnormally reacts with proteins, blocking the passage of nutrients and waste products between the cells. Collagen, the most common protein found in skin, is especially vulnerable to glycosylation and leads to loss of elastin, which results in aging of the skin. According to Dr. Monte Slater of Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic, New Youth Skin Care is the only skin care system to address this and many other causes of aging skin directly by attacking and reducing glycosylation effects. slatermd.com

HairOften with age, your hair will lose pigment and may also become wiry or frizzy. In your quest to reclaim the hair you remember, Erin Jubril from Aura Hair & Makeup recommends, “Soften your hair color. Is your hair dark brown or black? Lighten it up a shade or two to diminish dark circles and erase fine lines and wrinkles.” It won't actually take those wrinkles away, but they'll be much less noticeable. And to combat the wiry texture, she suggests a coconut-oil based color. aurahm.com

Eyebrows

The shape of your eyebrows can make or break your overall look, and you may be hanging on to bad plucking habits from decades past. Alyson Hoag, owner of Authentic Beauty, says, “As a

professional makeup artist, I was taught to enhance the brow shape according to the eye and face shape.” Here’s how she recommends gauging your perfect brow shape:

1. Begin by placing the long end of a makeup brush against your nose. Line the brush up with the area that is in between the inside of the tear duct and the eye socket. This is where your brow should start.

2. Next, line your brush up from your nose to the area between the outside edge of your eye and the socket. This is where your brow should end.

3. The last angle and the most important area is your arch. Too many technicians try to make the arch straight above the pupil, which unfortunately causes the arch to be straight up and gives the

appearance of the “rainbow brow.” To achieve the perfect arch, line your brush up to the outside of your nose and look straight ahead. Angle the brush so it is to the outside of the iris, and start your

arch where the brush crosses your brow. myimagejourney.com

Luca Lash Alyson Hoag swears by this natural product to help regrow brows if you’ve overtweezed or if the hair has thinned due to aging. “It is derived from

botanicals and contains no prostaglandins,” she explains. “It was designed for lash growth but works even better on brows!” myimagejourney.com

Kevyn Aucoin Precision Brow Pencil Keeping your brows shaped and filling them in with the correct color will frame and accentuate your face. Julian

Reynolds from Julian’s Cosmetics + Skincare says this pencil is one of his favorite brow products. julianscosmetics.com

Eyes Revision Skincare Teamine Eye Complex Alethea Tinkle, owner of Bella by

Alethea MedSpa, recommends this cream to diminish dark under-eye circles, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, firm skin and even provide antioxidant benefits. Tinkle says, “It is effective on all skin types and is consistently one of our best sellers. Our patients swear

by it, and it’s hard to keep it on the shelves!” beautybyalethea.com

Lips Rodan + Fields Redefi ne Acute Care Local Rodan + Fields consultant Ashlee Dozier

recommends these new strips to combat smile lines and lip wrinkles. Each strip delivers hyaluronic acid and peptides to the desired area, and the strips

can be worn three nights per week for effortless change noticeable on the first morning after use. Maximum benefits are achieved after eight weeks, and the

strips can be used on the eyes to combat crow’s feet. rodanandfields.com

Teeth Your teeth can reveal your age as much as any wrinkle, especially after years of stains building up.

If you’re looking for professional whitening, Dr. Ashish Patel from Smiles on Peachtree recommends their in-office Zoom Whitening procedure, which provides dramatic results in about an hour, or take-home trays. “Patients can have custom trays done and spend 30 minutes whitening each

day for five to seven days straight,” Dr. Patel says. To go beyond whitening and into reshaping your smile, cosmetic bonding and porcelain veneers are available options. Bonding can repair chipped

or cracked teeth, fill gaps or even change the shape of teeth themselves, and veneers cover chips, gaps and stains to create a beautiful, uniform smile. smilesinatlanta.com

Let’s Face ItOur faces take the brunt of the elements, meaning they might need some more intensive TLC. Try these local facial procedures to restore your skin to its former vitality, lift and glow:

■ Bella by Alethea’s $300 Refresh Laser Facial reduces the appearance of wrinkles and redness, treats age spots and tightens skin. Owner Alethea Tinkle adds, “It is a pampering facial. There is no downtime, pain or peeling, but the results are dramatic!” beautybyalethea.com

■ Julian Reynolds from Julian’s Cosmetics + Skincare recommends a Caudalie Vinexpert Firming Facial. This $125 procedure, Reynolds says, will lift and sculpt contours of the face and neck while boosting skin's collagen and elastin production. julianscosmetics.com

■ Fillers are always an option to quickly refresh your look. Dr. Linda Kelley from Cobb Wellness & Aesthetics recommends the ArqueDerma Restoration Lift, which uses hyaluronic acid fillers to reduce jowls, improve marionette lines, lift the brows and more. The procedure is a splurge, costing anywhere from $2,400 to $3,000. cwaesthetics.com

■ Warm things up with a ThermiRF treatment from the Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery. This non-surgical procedure helps boost collagen production by heating the underlying skin support tissues. This also helps eliminate fat and tighten skin and can be performed in Dr. Maloney’s office. For a more dramatic result, Dr. Maloney can also provide targeted liposuction to the treatment area. maloneycenter.com

Before choosing any one procedure, be sure you’re with the right provider. Dr. Seth Yellin from Marietta Facial Plastic Surgery says, “After 20 years as a facial plastic surgeon and educator, the best advice I can give is to partner with a facial plastic surgeon who is skilled and experienced and whose aesthetic vision you trust." mariettafacialplastics.com

It’s All In Your HeadEllen Langer, a psychologist and current professor of psychology at Harvard University, has conducted a few small-scale studies specifically about the mind’s effects on aging. In one, conducted in 1981, she took eight men in their 70s and set them up to live for just five days in a temporary home. The catch? The home was designed to remind them of 20 years before. Movies, magazines, even their conversation topics were all meant to evoke the past and get the subjects to act like their younger selves. At the end of the week, the men’s bodies had responded as if they truly were younger: they were more coordinated, sat taller and even experienced improved eyesight.

When the experiment was recreated in 2010, attempting to bring subjects back to their 1975 selves, the subjects experienced similar changes – one who struggled to dress himself at the beginning of the week was hosting a dinner party on the experiment’s final evening. So if you’re feeling like the years are starting to catch up with you, remember that some of it may just be in your head! ellenlanger.com

Better BraLadies, it's time to put your best bust forward. According to Molly Hopkins and Cynthia Decker from Livi Rae Lingerie, 85 percent of women are wearing a bra that’s the wrong size. Here, these bra fit experts share three ways to tell if your bra really fits:

■ Shoulder straps should be loose and comfortable, not digging into your shoulders.

■ If your breast tissue is spilling over the top of the bra, it means that your cup is too small.

■ The band holds 90 percent of your bra support, so it should be snug to avoid putting stress on your shoulders and back.

If your bra isn't cutting it, Try Livi Rae Lingerie’s “Virtual Fit” option online to find a better one. liviraelingerie.com

PostureWe know real estate is all about location, location, location, but did you know that your body size is often about perception, perception, perception? The key is posture. If you walk with rounded shoulders, an unsupported back, and a loose core, any extra weight you’re carrying will be accentuated. Try “losing” a few pounds today through proper posture!

"When you are standing, it is best to keep your shoulders back but relaxed to help keep the proper curve in your low back. One method to achieve this is by standing against a wall. You want your head, shoulder blades, buttocks and heels to touch the wall," says Dr. Marly N. Dows-Martinez from Resurgens Orthopaedics. "This not only helps promote the normal spinal alignment but also helps make you look taller and more confident." resurgens.com

Weight LossThere's no substitute for eating healthy, whole foods and breaking a sweat on a regular basis. But if you're doing all the right things and still want some extra help toning and tightening, many new technologies can help. BEST, a Buckhead dermatology center, specializes in non-surgical options such as Exilis, CoolSculpting, Ultherapy and more to help you achieve your goals. best.dermatologyconsultants.org

Another popular, non-surgical option is Vanquish, which uses radiofrequency to get rid of fat cells. “If you have a stubborn muffin top or love handles, Vanquish may be just the ticket,” says Carolyn Morey, practice manager for Prima Center for Plastic Surgery in Duluth. Their board-certified plastic surgeons conduct four to six painless weekly sessions with Vanquish patients for maximum results. primacenter.com

1 If your lashes are relatively straight, begin by curling them.

2 To apply, look up and wiggle the brush along your lashes as you apply in

upward motions. Use as little mascara as possible on this fi rst pass.

3 Look down and apply on top of the lash.

4 Repeat this process on the other eye and do another coat on each.

5 Before the mascara dries, you can use a lash comb to separate your

lashes if needed without pulling them out.

DIY Dry ShampooIf you color your hair, you know that every day you skip a suds-and-water shampoo is a day you’re prolonging your rich, glossy color. To extend the life of your color or even refresh your hair after a workout, try dry shampoo. It’s super simple to create your own dry shampoo at home with these recipes:

For brunettes – Mix 1/2 cup of organic cornstarch and two to three tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder. The darker your hair, the more cocoa powder you can use.

For redheads – Mix 1/2 cup of organic cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon.

For blondes – Mix 1/2 cup of organic cornstarch and three drops of the essential oil of your choice, such as chamomile or lavender.

A salt shaker or a used spice jar with a perforated plastic dispenser make it easy to apply your DIY dry shampoo. For best results, apply to roots and let sit for two minutes, and then

use your fi ngers to massage the dry shampoo into your scalp. Finally, turn your head upside

down and brush thoroughly to make sure the dry

shampoo is distributed evenly. Then take

a moment to admire yourself

in the mirror!

performing for over 10 years. With the revolutionary ARTAS System, Dr. Anderson is able to transplant hair without any linear or noticeable scarring, using no scalpels, no stitches, with a dramatically shorter recovery period than for patients who undergo a traditional linear strip method hair restoration procedure. With the sole exception of the ARTAS system, all FUE methods, using any device, are performed by hand, with all the associated variability and inherent human error.

HOW DOES IT WORK?Using high-tech stereoscopic cameras and updating its coordinates 5,000 times per second, the ARTAS System’s image-guided robotics harvest hair follicles for transplant with micron-level precision, one at a time. As there is no linear incision required with an ARTAS procedure, healing time is short, and you can usually go

(AOA) Honor Medical Society. Dr. Dudley was one of the pioneers in

developing techniques to diagnose breast cancer utilizing MRI. Presently, she has a private practice in Atlanta, Georgia where she offers patients a wide range of outpatient diagnostic

services in a convenient and patient-friendly environment. Her practice is

th fi t non ho ta a t n o a to offer the latest advancement in

mammography: 3D Mammography (breast tomosynthesis). In addition,

Dr. Dudley provides 2D Digital Mammography, bone densitometry and ultrasound utilizing the most up-to-date

technology available.

• n fi ant du t on n a at up to 40 percent. 5,7

• Lower dose and faster 3D mammography through C-View™ software, which uses 3D data to create 2D images, eliminating the 2D X-ray exposure and shorting the exam scan time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhat should I expect during the 3D mammography screening exam?3D mammography is performed at the same time as the 2D mammogram with the same system. There is no additional compression required and the exam time may be just about the same or shorter than a 2D exam.

Is there more radiation dose? With the lower dose 3D mammography, very low X-ray energy is used during the exam, just about the same as a standard 2D digital

a o a and ow than a t ad t ona fi mammogram.

Who can have a 3D mammogram exam?It is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram, in both the screening and diagnostic settings.

What is the difference between a screening and a diagnostic mammogram?A screening mammogram is your annual mammogram that is done every year. Sometimes the radiologist may ask you to come back for follow-up images, called a diagnostic mammogram, to rule out an unclear area in the breast or if there is a breast complaint that needs to be evaluated. Diagnostic mammogram focuses on the area of abnormality or the area of complaint. It is important to have the original images available if you go to a different facility for your follow-up exam. Please call Diagnostic Radiology Ultrasound & Breast Center at (404) 252-3430 to schedule your lower dose 3D mammogram.

3D mammography is an advanced, clinically proven screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection. With conventional digital mammography, the radiologist is viewing all the complexities of the breast in one image. Sometimes breast tissue can overlap, giving the illusion of an abnormal area, or hide a small cancer.During the 3D mammogram, the X-ray arm sweeps over the breast taking multiple low dose images. Then, a computer produces a 3D image in one millimeter slices, decreasing tissue overlap. With the new C-View™ software, the 3D data is used to create the 2D images, eliminating the need for an additional X-ray exposure.

There are many reasons one may choose to have rhinoplasty surgery. Some people don’t like the nose they were born with, some don’t like the way aging has changed their nose, and some could be correcting the way an injury has distorted their nose. Some people may even be trying to improve their breathing. Whatever the reason may be, having a well-shaped nose as a result of rhinoplasty surgery can greatly improve the appearance and overall balance of your face and n a ou onfi d n nd th o natural it looks, the better. Rhinoplasty surgeries can be performed three different ways: either using two concealed incisions on the inside of a patient’s nose, using a small “w-shaped” incision hidden in the skin between your nostrils or with a small incision where your no t n to a But no matter what incision your surgeon chooses to use, the bone and cartilage that make up the shape of your nose are very carefully sculpted in order to achieve an ideally shaped and fully functioning nose. Recent advancements in medicine have made rhinoplasty surgeries safer, more effective and quicker than ever before. Most rhinoplasty surgeries can be completed as outpatient procedures and use general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. You can now go home to recover the very same day on which you receive your rhinoplasty surgery. Rhinoplasty patients can go back to normal physical exercise after two weeks, and contact sports after six.

It’s spring break season in m etro Atlanta. Many of you will hit the road for some fun and relaxation, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave your healthy eating habits at home. Fast food is a temptation on every highway, but it’s good to keep balance when you’re away from home. There are plenty of healthy snacks that you can pack for your road trip, whether it’s long or short.

FOR SHORTER TRIPS, YOU CAN BRING ALONG NON-PERISHABLE SNACKS LIKE:

Unsalted nuts or trail mix. You can even make your own with almonds, cashews, wa nut anut an un ow d or pumpkin seeds. You could also include dried fruit like cranberries, blueberries or raisins. Just remember that 2 tablespoons of dried fruit will add about 15 grams of carbohydrates to your snack.

Half a sandwich made with 100 percent whole wheat bread and 1 to 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter or almond butter.

BAYADA clinical manager and RN Crystal Lee oversaw all aspects of Kasey’s care. “All of the nurses on Kasey’s team are specially trained to care for children with complex medical needs,” Crystal says. “They are with Kasey 16 hours a day.”

Mary and Jack look forward to the day their daughter, now 18 months old, can breathe on her own. But for now they are relieved by how well their bundle of joy is progressing. “With BAYADA, I know Kasey is safe and getting the care she needs,” Mary says.

What things can I encourage my teen to do to combat normal anxiety and stress?

Help your teen begin good habits now that will follow into adulthood with

regards to reducing stress. Encourage them to practice yoga, meditate, eat

well-balanced meals, get enough sleep, limit caffeine and sugar and exercise

every day. Help them develop support systems through clubs and sports teams. Additionally, set a good example yourself

by sharing a positive attitude and demonstrating a sense of humor.

Teenage Angst or Depression?

Depression strikes teenagers more often than most people think. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. Each year about 6.7 percent of U.S. adults experience major depressive disorder, and women are 70 percent more likely than men to experience depression during their lifetime. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America reports that half of people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The good news is that depression and anxiety, even the most severe cases, can be effectively treated. The earlier that treatment can begin, the

In today’s busy world, everyone deals with stress. Family, work, friends, life – these all contribute to the organized chaos we face on a daily basis. And when it comes to coping with those stressors, we all experience some level of anxiety. Maybe we lose some sleep, our

minds race with worry, or we don’t fi nish dinner because our stomachs are in knots.

But for some people – approximately 40 million Americans, according to the National Institute of Mental Health – anxiety is more than just temporary, reasonable worry. Sometimes worry spirals into trembling hands, a racing heart, nausea, trouble catching a breath and more. If that sounds like you or someone you know, an anxiety disorder may be the culprit.

AnxietyWhen it’s more than

worry, what can you do?By Karon Warren

More Than WorryWhen dealing with possible anxiety disorders, it’s crucial to know exactly how anxiety is defined. “Anxiety can be described as a feeling of dread, impending doom or excessive worry,” says Shannon O’Brien, MS, LAPC, NCC, of e Anxiety & Stress Management Institute in Marietta. “Anxiety, at its core, is a natural and normal bodily response to a potential threat.” A potential threat could be something as simple as public speaking or a fear of spiders, but for someone with an anxiety disorder, the natural response to those situations escalates to uncontrollable heights. Sometimes an anxiety response can be provoked by something not typically threatening at all, such as a trip to the grocery store or sitting in a classroom.

Symptoms of anxiety include physical responses like trembling hands, sweating, tense muscles, shortness of breath and increased heart rate, among others. Mental responses could include feeling nervous, fear, dread and panic. People without anxiety disorders can often reason their way through these feelings, and the symptoms resolve within a short period of time. For

those suffering from anxiety disorders, however, these and other symptoms can become crippling.

“When [anxiety] starts to dominate your life, that’s when it becomes an anxiety disorder,” says Dr. Nadine Kaslow, chief psychologist at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Essentially, anxiety becomes a disorder when a person has difficulty concentrating, starts to isolate himself, avoids certain situations and can’t sleep, among other interfering behaviors.

“In order to warrant a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder, symptoms of anxiety must be present

for at least six months,” O’Brien says. Diagnosis may come in several classifications: generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder and illness anxiety disorder, among others, O’Brien adds. e root cause of these disorders is not always clear. According to Dr. Angelo Sambunaris of e Institute for Advanced Medical Research, “Scientists currently think that, like heart disease or Type 1 diabetes, mental illnesses

“Like heart disease or Type 1 diabetes, mental illnesses probably result from a combination of genetic, environmental, psychological and

developmental factors.”– Dr. Angelo Sambunaris, Institute for Advanced Medical Research

probably result from a combination of genetic, environmental, psychological and developmental factors.” at means a solution may not be one simple fi x.

A Therapeutic ApproachWhen struggling with anxiety, it’s important fi rst to see your primary care physician to determine if the anxiety is a result of a physical condition such as heart disease, diabetes or even a thyroid problem. Once those possible causes are ruled out, the next common step is therapy, which involves talking with a trained professional to resolve specifi c problems that trigger anxiety. Dr. omas Burns, board-certifi ed clinical psychologist with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, explains that therapy helps you examine fears or cognitive distortions that may be triggering your anxiety. Together with the therapist, you work to resolve or eliminate those thoughts.

Hypnosis is another treatment that can help alleviate anxiety. “ e reason it works well is because [anxiety issues] are brought on by the subconscious mind,” says Valerie Cobbin, master hypnotherapist with Brighter Tomorrow Hypnotherapy in Atlanta. “I reprogram the subconscious to deal with those issues to eliminate the anxiety.”

Cope with CombinationsMedications also can be eff ective in treating anxiety, particularly when symptoms such as nausea or panic are so bad that you cannot get to the root of the problem. Dr. Dave Davis, medical director of Piedmont Psychiatric Clinic in Atlanta, says, “If [anxiety symptoms] get really bad, I give medicine to decrease symptoms while working on coping skills.” He adds, “You should never just treat with medicine,” instead advising a combination of any necessary medication with other available therapies.

Also, O’Brien recommends examining your lifestyle to see if changes are warranted, such as cutting out caff eine and exercising regularly. While diet and exercise improvements alone will not fully address an anxiety disorder, they can give an even better chance for overall success when combined with medication and therapy.

Strong Support Along with eff ective treatments, people struggling with anxiety need a strong support system. If you’re parenting one of the eight percent of American teens struggling with anxiety, learn how to approach their condition constructively. “Don’t be negative or see anxiety as a weakness,” Burns says, because it truly isn’t. Kaslow clarifi es, “It’s a neurochemical issue.” Unfortunately, only 18 percent of anxious teens receive mental health care, but that seems to be changing. Dr. Sambunaris says, “As science has advanced and we better understand these diseases and treatments, parents are getting help for their children more quickly.”

is compassionate approach will make you a great support for anyone in your life struggling with anxiety, and if you yourself are looking for that support, don’t stop until you fi nd it. Whether it’s from a therapist, a family member, a friend or a partner, you deserve a support system that can sympathize

with your situation and stand alongside you as you work through it.

THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK

If someone you know is experiencing anxiety, be supportive in the right ways.

O’Brien says, “The most important thing is to acknowledge and validate

what you’ve heard.”

Don’t say...“What do you have to be anxious

about? Just calm down.” O’Brien says that only adds to the anxiety.

“I feel super stressed too.” Kaslow says when someone is anxious, they can’t

address your problems right then.

Do say…Kaslow suggests, “I am here for you, and you are always welcome to reach

out to me.”Davis recommends, “When do you feel anxious?” There may be a pattern, and

understanding it can help.

Don’t hesitate to get help if anxiety is interfering with your day-to-day life. “A person might seek help at any stage of experiencing anxiety,” O’Brien encourages, and these days, more and more people are doing just that. “Mental illness is slowly shedding its stigma, which means more people are getting the treatment they need,” O’Brien says. And with a diagnosis and treatment plan in place, you are well on your way to successfully overcoming anxiety.

It’s almost time to break out those spring clothes! I have a simple exercise that will get you toned and ready for shorts in no time: the walking lunge. It’s my favorite move to target the thighs, butt and core. Let’s start lunging!

1. Stand tall with your feet together, shoulders back and hands by your side or

on your hips – whatever makes you feel comfortable.

2. Take one step forward with the right leg, making sure to keep that core tight, and sink down until both knees are at a 90-degree angle.

3. Push off the back leg and bring the feet together. Do the same move with the other leg, moving forward with each lunge.

To prevent knee strain or injury, make sure your front knee does not go past your big toe during any lunge. Start slow with 10 to 15 reps, rest and repeat three times. As you get better, challenge yourself by adding hand weights and increasing your reps. You’ll be ready in no time to show off those sexy legs and tight tush.

Q Can you give us some tips for using resistance bands?

A Working out with resistance bands is an easy, affordable and effective total body workout. Plus, they are incredibly portable for vacations or business trips! When using resistance bands,

remember to move slowly and purposefully through each movement. Focus on the muscle group you are working, and control each movement. Aim for three sets of 12 to 16 repetitions of each exercise.Kristin Corbin, FNP-C, PT-C, Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine

Fitness FashionClothing boutique Fab’rik recently launched a new line of athletic wear. They now carry a variety of workout pants, sports bras and tops for between $20 and $48 so you can sweat it out in style. Shopping at the Emory Point location also gives you easy access to nearby Pink Barre and Orangetheory Fitness to put your new workout clothes to the test.

Q As a woman, I’m concerned that if I lift heavy weights, I will become big and bulky. Is that true?

A This is a common concern among women when they fi rst begin lifting weights. However, weight training performed properly and with the appropriate amount of repetitions, rest periods and variations will tone your entire body evenly and not create a manly or bulky physique. It takes men, who generally have more testosterone and consume more calories than women, years in the gym to increase size. A customized workout plan with a disciplined approach will help you achieve the toned and feminine physique most women desire.Dusty Gilbreth, Core Physique

Get Younger Looking LegsBy David Martin, RN, CRNFA

As they do every year, spring and summer fashions will draw a lot of attention to the legs and ankles. How can you knock 10 years off the look of your legs, especially when you’re standing or sitting all day, chasing children or dollars – or both?

Exercise. Movement will increase the flow of blood and lymph to help prevent ankle swelling. You’ve heard it before: park far away and walk, take the stairs and make an extra lap around the grocery store.

Raise your feet. Even just for 15 minutes, raising your feet six to 12 inches above your heart will relieve some swelling and re-energize you.

Skip the salt and sugar. Salt makes you retain fluids, putting extra pressure on your veins. Sugar increases the risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to poor circulation.

Stop smoking. Nicotine and all the related chemicals in cigarettes – even the new “smokeless” cigarettes – wreak havoc on your vascular system, including the veins in your legs.

Find support. While it is still chilly, look to support socks and stockings to help with circulation. Come summer, support athletic wear helps boost blood flow back to the heart and helps reduce swelling.

Treat varicose veins. Varicose veins, spider veins and their underlying cause, venous insufficiency, add age to the look of your legs and make you feel older due to the pain and fatigue. Men and women – especially athletes who participated in contact sports or people who have varicose veins in their families – are often surprised by how much younger they look and feel following treatment on their veins.

The chicest of Atlanta women have always enjoyed the secret weapon that is Lidia Nistor-Reteneller, founder of Skin IQ Medspa & Store. In 2013 she launched a genius retail space in Buckhead. "It's like an Americanized French pharmacy", she explains. "We have truly assembled the best selec-tion of organic and medical grade products that you usually have to trek to a doctor's office to acquire. We carry over 45 different skin, hair, body products, from over 12 countries, arranged by specific needs like acne, rosacea, dermatitis, etc." The variety of products and services are meant to support Lidia's unique 'skin confusion' and highly customized anti-aging skin care concept.

Also, in 2015 Lidia will graduate from Chopra University as a Vedic Master and she will incorporate in her anti-aging program, an anti-stress program (meditation, nutrition, etc.) to assist her clients on how to age gracefully from the inside-out as well.

A Healthy HomeWhen it comes to a serious condition like HIV, people need medical and emotional support to survive and thrive, but they also need the basics: housing. According to Charlie Frew, executive director of local nonprofi t Jerusalem House, “People who are not stably housed are less likely to receive antiretroviral therapy and are more likely to be hospitalized,” as well as experience higher rates of premature death. Because of these statistics, Jerusalem House is adamant that “housing is health care,” and the organization is founded on that premise.

Jerusalem House offers housing for HIV+ adults, a dedicated space for HIV+ single moms and their children, and “scattered sites” throughout Atlanta so HIV+ individuals can live on their own and still access necessary support services. The organization has provided these crucial housing options since 1988 and is responsible for 60 percent of Atlanta’s dedicated HIV/AIDS housing today. In addition to a safe, quality home, Jerusalem House collaborates with other local organizations to provide medical care, places for kids to learn and play, literacy support and more. Volunteers can join in these efforts by tutoring child residents in the Learning Center or tackling home improvement projects such as gardening or painting.

People living with HIV still need these programs today because, Frew explains, they “still regularly encounter stigma, stereotyping and discrimination at work, at school, in health care settings and elsewhere.” For example, many people assume that Jerusalem House’s residents are primarily gay men, but in reality, 48 percent are female, 33 percent are dependent children and 65 percent identify as heterosexual.

No matter who their residents are, Jerusalem House’s vision is to provide them with a caring home that improves their health and quality of life. To help achieve that, Jerusalem House will hold their annual Stars Party on April 9 at The Atlanta Biltmore Hotel in Midtown, which includes live music, cocktails, a silent auction and more. To purchase tickets or get involved with Jerusalem House as a volunteer, visit jerusalemhouse.org.

Let us rejuvenate your joints with regenerative medicine! Our genetic code is a powerful database of “life-giving” instructions for cells. These codes facilitate a programmed response when the cells are exposed to certain stimuli. These responses can be triggered by RIT techniques, forcing the treated area to regenerate healthy tissue & cartilage, resulting in stronger joints.
